In this timeless classic, the tyrant Jaffar has seized power and has forced Sultan's daughter to marry him. Jordan Mechner's brother David, the brave youth who is a prisoner in Jaffar's dungeons, must rescue her within 60 minutes. Little does poor Jaffar know that he will be defeated in a fifth of the intended time.

lmao he looks so disappointed that he ran away from the duel.
That’s some pretty impressive sprite animation and sound quality for a 1989 DOS game. A lot of games at that time were still just beeps and such
A master duelist.
My first game. I never thougth I'd finish it one day, and I did. Don't know, it is special to me
This wasn't my first but one of them and I had forgotten about it!!
I can only imagine how difficult this was to program back then.
This game was programmed on a platform during the 8-bit era when resident memory and total game size were that much more impactful on how to program than anything else. The Apple IIc was the appointed platform for the first build and it was already long in the tooth. By the end of its life, PoP was already realizing success by being ported to everything else that was coming out. Nobody ever accounted for glitching or TAS but this game has already made its mark in history and has earned tons of respect from gamers and programmers worldwide.
@@DaemonForce you don't have to imagine as there is full documentary on making of this game and ain't gonna lie - it's crazy
realizing that in order to defeat your shadow, you had to put down your sword still is one of the best gaming moments of my life
it was so against everything what was going on at the time that you just needed to kill everything
What does "you had to put that your sword" mean?
@@bloodlustshiva1 put down. sorry, misspelled that
@@dimitreze Ahh, got it. No worries, I've never played any of the PoP games so I didn't have anything to work from to figure that out.
It was an amazing feeling... I still remember that day.. After trying for 100s of times I got fed up and pulled down my sword to tell my shadow to come kill me.. :). There were no walk throughs available in 90s..finished entire game on my own.. Took months but that was the fun in it..
817 billion rerecords because they took the existing route and RAN IT THROUGH A SUPERCOMPUTER to determine the optimal way to execute it.
I have to say it’s pretty well animated as many comments pointed out. But I too know this plays like constant ice physics on crack and 3 second input lag for extra fun.
I remembered when Jaffa took the pose before battle and then I realized, he always took the pose when you left he screen. I wondered what happen if you strike during the pose. I laugh so hard
This character makes the most natural movements I have ever seen in a platform game.
I saw a video where the guy (Jordan Mechner) explains how he did it, he recorded his little brother doing all the movements on a Super 8 camera and then traced each frame to create the animations, he even showed the camera footage he used and it's bizarre to watch if you're familiar with the game at all.
@@pentelegomenon1175 Thank you for the information, that looks really interesting!
This came out before Disney's Aladdin.
Obligatory: "One jump! Ahead of the bread-line..."
Over 30 years later and people still remember. I'm very confident that some video games will live forever like a great book or movie..
Those wall clips tho...🤘
5:35 let’s dance
Why are there so many flimsy floors in a palace
That could explained by poor building maintenance, but those choppers....?
@@marzi_kat the workers put there because jaffars doesn't pay.
Jaffar was so dumbfounded by the prince's bizarre movements that he was unable to defend himself from a single swift but deadly strike.
I wonder if rotoscoping was used to animate the sprites of this game, they are really fluid
It was!
there is a 20-minute long video by Ars Technica(IIRC) that has Mr Mechner explain the development process. In short, he used his own brother as a reference for the running, stepping, crawling and climbing animations, which he shot on film outside of his college, then used frame advance on a recorder to trace the position of his brother's limbs one frame at a time on a sheet of paper, laid on top of the TV screen. He later converted these drawings into the animation frames. For the swordplay, he used footage from an old Robin Hood movie, repeating the entire process there.
I remember this one on display at Comp USA. At the time, I was more interested in the Quest for Glory series, but I sure wish I had given this one a try. Thanks for the upload =)
What an interesting game
Never seen it before yet it looks really fun
It's tough to get into, but there was nothing quite like it in its day. I think you can grab it for free as of today, with an enhanced port of the PC version, called SDLPoP, for Windows and Linux.
@@lecapitaine1017 Wow, thanks. Never heard about SDLPoP and as far it's awesome port. :)
12:43 most confusing boss fight in history of gaming
Clearly you haven't seen Prince of Persia 2 :p
Oh man. What I wouldnt give to hear runner commentary about this.
You got it dude. I'll make one asap
@@eien86 Try to do as well as DavidXNewton on this one :D

this game is painful to beat
Bro I’m for real. I got frustrated thinking that I can beat that game at the age of 10 and I didn’t even got close to what this guy have done.
The game is near imposible to beat
Edit.
I’m 34 and I never got the chance to play again. I hated that game.
@@brolysmash9333 its not a guy, it's a program
@@jackal327 really? What kinda thou?
@@brolysmash9333 look the link at the description, it explains how it's done
A tool-assisted run that includes the copy protection. Now that's something you don't see very often.
TASVideos refuses "cracked" games. The copy protection level pauses the in game time anyway :)
5:37 LMAO
First time playing this game was in CGA 😊 good times
I had this with my PC when I purchased and had to guess the potion combination on 2° stage because I didn't had the manual.
Prince of Parkour more accurately.
5:45 Did those falling tiles just play the first couple notes of Megalovania?
lmao!
The guard was having a bad time
this is really cool to watch instead of me not being able to play the game at all
1:08 I call this move the Nintendo switch.

Uggggh this fucking game. I remember beating this SoB back in 94 along with that cursed black and white version on IBM. But if you think this game was hard, the 2nd one will make you wanna throw your monitor out the window.
Oh, wow... I played this game a bunch of times when I was a kid, (and won it a few times) but never realized there were so many bugs to exploit. :P Well done. I'm particularly impressed by those well-timed jumps over spikes and through guillotines. Those things made me nervous every time. :|
Impressive!
Now available for Atari 8-bit computers.
This is hilarious...
Love the way this is all automated completely... TAS is amazing if you really think about it.
What I would like to know is how the *fuck* did those guards get to their post each day?
the employee entrance, of course
@@eien86 I just like to think they live there and have food and drinks delivered via holes in the wall. All while they stave off thoughts if dying or continuing to live there, day after day is worse.
This is the game everyone wants on switch why though?
Don't think that's the one, Prince of Persia is a long-running series that's had a revival throughout the 2000s as 3D action platformers. Even if that's the specific one, it's still a good game as it is.
176 rerecord ?
The route was made with a bot with 817 billon re-loads. 176 were the manual segments needed to input the bot's route
too much work!

Definitely not a pwd friendly castle at all.
Impressive abusing of fighting mechanics and re-positioning enemies.

Why not the Mac version? It's one of the only games ever released that's better on Mac than DOS.
a) We don't know if Mac TASing is possible.
b) DOS is definitely the most popular version for speedruns.

It is a horrible game, bad controls, only TAS can go through walls and not fight with those guards the battle system with those is unfair, crude and not predictable, it is disgusting, also it does not have music, and the sounds of the doors and the floors falling are heard worse than the blinds of our mother's house when we break them with the ball, this game is horrible, they are the13 minutes longer than I have seen of a TAS and seen races of 1 hour and they are enjoyable videos and with this one I said that it was over, I was falling asleep and those sounds kill me, this is a cancer game, I lived through that time, but this game disgusted me anyway.
