    What's up with the piece of charcoal?

    • @dinosaurier2531
      @dinosaurier2531 5 лет назад +129

      Probably to create a low oxygen environment. As the charcoal (C) combusts, it converts most of the oxygen (O2) in the furnace to CO2 and minimizes the formation of aluminiumoxide.

      It kind of is
      But there will be something left in the bottom everytime
      Also Id like to point out that salt doesnt work like this with every metal
      The best way to clean your metal is to use something called borax
      Look it up on google ;)

    Because you have an electric furnace you can actually do some temperature cycling.
    One heat the ingots to about 400-425C (just below melting point), and then cool em in boiling water, do that back and forth a couple of times making sure the ingot gets thourougly heated and last cycle you dunk it in cold water.. That will leave you with something more machineable in the range of a -T4, -T56 type of hardness.. The process is called aging and is not super easy to get accurate in a home setup.. But i found it makes the alu ingots nicer to machine.
    Good luck. :)

    A suggestion for clearing the aluminium from the pots without oiling them
    place them in a freezer for an hour
    Aluminium is more thermally conductive than steel so the billet you cast will shrink by a few thousands of an inch at a faster rate than the steel pot
    You can also use this thermal expansion trick as an easy way to fit bearings -
    freeze the shaft and heat the bearing and they will fall straight into place with no press needed
    Edit: Also I would recommend a HSS tool for machining the Aluminium - As it is a soft material it tends to gall and cling to carbide inserts giving a rough finish

    • @bengrogan9710
      @bengrogan9710 Год назад

      @Will Swift its because of how the 2 cut.
      Carbide doesn't really "cut" it tears
      Hard materials are more brittle to shock, so carbide has a more rounded edge as a sharpened edge would almost instantly chip and break
      HSS on the other hand is soft enough to sharpen to a razer edge cutting the material.
      The ripping of carbide makes more heat which essentially can melt and bind soft materials causing gauling and gathering on the tool

    When you are making pulley ,make sure that bottom of the belt and bottom of the pulley has space between.Vbelts work on sides,as you tighten them,so its good to use parting knife and make bottom of the pulley wide for the small dimension of belt and depth half of that dimension:For example 10x5 belt-bottom of pulley 5-6mm wide with clearance between belt and bottom of pulley of 2.5mm.This way as pulley slowly wears it will always have friction.

    I really like your electric foundry, I feel inspired to make one for myself. I use a lot of propane in mine, so just plugging in a cord would be a luxury. If you plan to do more aluminum casting you would be doing yourself a big favor to get a proper foundry flux to get rid of the impurities, then degas with some chlorine to get the bubbles out for a perfect solid casting.

    I would have liked to see you pre-heat the extra alu chunks to drive off moisture before dropping them into the liquid alu charge. This reduces the number of steam explosions. Also, a low tech way of breaking up large castings is to heat them in a wood fire in the garden. The alu turns soggy and easily breakable a good bit below the melting point.

And it is way more accurate then a file. I have even done it in steel. You just need to make extremely light cuts and do lots of spring passes.
