  • This guy's been hanging out in my sweetheart's back yard, stripping leaves off some of her bushes. Beautiful to watch, we've been tiptoeing around, trying to avoid spooking him. It was pouring rain, and when he shook like a wet dog, off it came. You don't see that every day.

      It doesn't hurt, any animal with antlers sheds them every year in the beginning of winter. Their body knows it needs to conserve energy and that's why the antlers shed so the body can contain as much nutrients as possible through the winter. The only time a deers antlers hurt is if something happens when they are growing in the spring and the antlers are covered in velvet, they are very sensitive at that point, but in early summer they grow, get hard as bone and then the deer will scrape them in trees to get the velvet off. Antlers shed and grow back, horns are forever, say deer, moose, caribou, elk, all have antlers, cows, sheep, goats have horns. Pretty lucky to get that in film though and once a deer looses one antler he will try and knock the other one off for balance and being able to get through the woods and tight areas better.

      @@chadbinette3201 Jesus christ ... Just because it's part of there process doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. I bleed, every month, for five days... Not once a year... Not twice a year... Every single month... Guess what? It never doesn't not hurt. It's part of my PROCESS... Trust me antlers falling out of LIVE skin doesn't feel good. I've done enough European mounts to know, that skin attaches to the antler every single year. You think you know more than me about this but I promise... You don't.

      If you search on youtube there is a really good video of this, you even hear the antler "pop" as it falls off. They usually get startled by the noise of it crashing into brush simply because deer are skittish by nature. The continuation of the deer freaking out is just him trying to ditch the other side. Though if he just rubbed a tree real good I am sure it would have just popped off.

    • @PestilentAllosaurus

      Yeah, I think the only way it would hurt them is if it popped off and picked them. After all those tips are sharp!

    • @0megacron
      @0megacron 2 года назад +7

      Supposedly it itches quite a lot, which promotes them rubbing it up against trees & whatnot. Once it's ready to come off, they rub against something (or shake their head as seen here) and -POP- off it goes.

    This video confirms my suspicions on how the bucks do it. I always thought when they had one side left they needed to shed the other. I loved getting out in the woods and looking for sheds. My Grandpa claimed a hard frost after Christmas started the shed.
    When my son was about 6 years old we went up where I figured the deer were hanging out on a New Years day. We found 13 whitetail sheds that day if memory serves me correct. I found antlers stuck in the crusted snow, hanging in limbs of little trees and under the edge of trees on the ground. That was in 1989 and I have never had an equal experience. Between the cougar and the wolves one is lucky to even see a mature buck up there now.
