    "I was out photographing a bear from a safe distance when it caught scent and sight of me. Normally, I'm used to black bears running away when they're aware of a person but this bear was behaving oddly. It came towards me and followed me even after I stood my ground, shouted, and waved my arms at it. Luckily I had bear spray and prepared myself to use it if the bear charged at me. I slowly and safely started retreating back to my car and after a couple of minutes of it following me, I decided to start filming. The bear continued to follow me and was getting closer. When I was in a good position with the wind at my back and the bear coming close to me, I sprayed it with the bear spray. Thankfully the bear spray worked as designed and sent the bear running away."

    People think black bears are harmless but this looks like classic predatory black bear behavior. They don't charge in but follow persistently and slowly escalate the aggression-getting closer, climbing trees, etc. This guy was lucky to have bear spray and I hope this video helps others understand dangerous behavior.

    • @AriaIsara
      @AriaIsara Год назад +16

      It's not what "people think", it's what literally every bear specialist and professionals from national parks dealing with bears say. Black bears are mostly skittish and they normally don't hunt humans. This is a curious young bear who could mean trouble but it doesn't justify the fear mongering that happens around bears. Regular people actually often believe they're man eaters and will attack at every meeting. People actually think bears love the smell of blood and other nonsense.

    I had an encounter like this once. I became extremely loud and yelled and took a super aggressive stance and it turned away. My response probably would not have worked on a mature bear, a mother with cubs, or a male in season. But you can see this was a young bear trying to build up his courage to attack, getting more aggressive each time, so the soft and timid response actually invited the attack. But thank God the bear spray was effective.

    • @BPRescue
      @BPRescue 2 года назад +313

      In this situation you do exactly as you said, be aggressive, hold your ground, yell, etc. Black bears rarely attack, even with the situations you mention regarding cubs or mating. That does not mean get close to a black bear with cubs, but just that even then, black bears are typically timid and will almost always retreat.
      This particular situation is of the most dangerous you can have with a black bear and when most of the attacks and deaths occur. This was a "teenage" boar, who just like our teenagers tend to get themselves in trouble or push the envelope. That, or a food conditioned, and/or habituated, or finally a bear in predatory mode means you need to stop him from following you. Walking backwards is dangerous if he trips, the bear is likely going to attack and who knows if he hangs onto the bear spray. Either way, when a black bear is following you, they are trying to determine what action to take, or looking for the right moment to attack. So, you need to stop, start yelling, even throwing things at the bear to change their mind.

Each bear is completely different, it has its own personality just as we do, but this little guy was definitely being a bit to curious and testing you out way to much, and I would have given him/her a small shot of bear spray to test him out before he got to aggressive just like you did, and it worked beautifully. As you did in this situation, I tend to also be more on the quiet side to keep the bear more calm only in a situation with a bear like this, talking quietly, walking slowly, and eventually using a small amount of Bear Spray. Good job, Happy Trails🐾🐻🌲

    • @1jackvalley580
      @1jackvalley580 Год назад +9

      @@cmc5394oparva Yes an Airhorn can be effectively used in most cases, unless they have been around people using the Airhorn frequently, then there can be a chance where the bear can become de-sensitized to the sound. I would definitely always have 2 cans of bear spray as first protection. One important thing to know and people forget about is to make sure you absolutely read and understand how to make the "SPRAYER" on the can work. People have had unfortunate situations because of not knowing. Second, an Airhorn can work to scare bear away if it has not become to use to the sound, but I think it is a good thing to use as a second choice. Happy Camping 🐻

      This is a huge reason why bear spray is so important! Not only does it keep us humans safe, it saves the lives of bears. Once they have had the unpleasant experience of pepper spray, they will be more likely to avoid humans from then on, keeping other people safe while also preventing an encounter that would ultimately result in said bears being destroyed. Bears are killed all the time due to them having no fear of people. Once a bear has lost it’s fear of humans & starts hanging out where the people are, they’ll be killed. They *might* be given another chance with relocation but that’s not always the outcome. Bear spray saves bears too!

    Here's a tip I picked up first hand with an absolutely huge male black bear. Most older bears here in the western US anyway have been run by hounds at some point in their life. This huge boar was staring me down when I spotted him and wouldn't back off even after firing a few rounds from a rifle. He even started walking towards me and I didn't want to kill this guy so I started barking like a dog. When he heard what he thought were the hounds coming he spun around on a dime and took off running. I've tried that on a few bears afterwards and it worked every time. They think you just released the dogs and either take off running or get right up a tree. Don't know if it would work on a bear that's never been chased but it's worth a try.

    He's a lot more patient than I would have been. I think he was just looking for the Charmin though. I had a bear encounter a few years back, I pulled over in the mountains to hang a whiz, got out of my truck and started walking to the trees, looked up and there was a big ol bear fifteen feet away staring at me, it didn't' register at first, I thought what a weird looking dog! We just sat there staring at each other, I couldn't even think so I started backing up and when I knew I could reach my truck I took off running, I turned around when I got the door open and he was running the other way. My heartbeat probably scared him. Holy crap!

I think I would have held my ground with that guy or even walked right towards him and hit him with the spray sooner rather than later. He seemed to be encouraged to follow the more you backed up.

    • @willong1000

      I would add that you probably don't want to yell in a high-pitched, panicky voice that might sound like a rabbit or fawn deer in distress. It doesn't need to be guttural, but I recommend a lower-pitched, assertive, "command voice." I bring the volume up in stages myself.
      The most anxious encounter I've had with a bear was with a youngster* like the one seen in the video. I was hiking out at the end of an eight-day shift in the backcountry of Glacier National Park in 1999. (I was working a Summer job doing historical preservation work on an 8-days-on, 6-days-off schedule). I was running a bit late. The sun was below the ridge, but still plenty of light remaining when I spotted the bear ambling up the trail toward me. I got bear spray ready in one hand and the biggest rock that I figured I could wield with authority in the other--I forgot all about my camera! I started at moderate volume to get the bear's attention as it didn't seem aware of me at first. The bear barely looked at me and gave no indication that it was going to yield the trail. The steep slope of the terrain at the spot did not permit me to step off either side without putting myself at greater risk. While the bear kept approaching, it took another three "Hey, get out of here!" each louder than the previous, before it finally diverted off the trail and passed across the brushy slope maybe 30 feet below me. I swear that critter gave me a surly glare as it did so.
      * A young bear is often likened to a teenage punk: it's out to test limits and see what it can get away with. Unfortunately for people, it doesn't require a very big bear to F' us up really bad.

      It kept running forward and climbing because the bear was nervous. He was following but nervous. A bit of clapping and stomping and yelling probably would have send him sprinting. But since the bear didn't see that he kept getting closer. But he wasn't sure if he was safe near the man. Hence he knew he could climb if the man attacked. I think this turned out fine. But he should have sprayed it sooner. And more spray. And more yelling. Once you pull the trigger, you gotta yell, and commit . You set a precedent that the bear should "never talk to another human". Or get close.

    Better to spray the bear as early in the encounter as possible. This helps teach them to avoid people from the sight. This bear may still want to 'test' the next subject. Best bear spray to get should spray a minimum of 30ft, have at least a 7 second burst and a cone shaped spray. Spray is more effective than a gun. A bear can and will still charge you after being shot, but won't and can't if it can't see or breathe well.

The climbing a little bit up or clawing at trees while stalking like this is him showing strength and dominance. It’s not him trying to go away. The bear was purposely trying to make the man trip and hoping to run around him to attack from behind. Bear experts recommend with black bear you yell put your hands in the air and don’t back down because if he fell that bear could have been on him. He should have sprayed him as soon as he got close to him and yelled loudly. With a grizzly you speak low and calmly like this because grizzly are not scared of basically anything or with a black bear fat off or passing by.

    As it turns out, bear spray is heavily regulated in favor of the bear. Most modes of transport do not allow bear spray aboard. Few outposts carry it. Frontiersman, 2022's #1 bear spray, has a formulation that features the highest level of capsaicin content "legally permissible" at 2%. But the same pepper spray that is used on humans can contain 10%, and the higher concentration of oleoresin capsicum whereas a bear spray will only contain 1-2% of the same active ingredient. The point is to cause the bear to back off rather than to do any real harm. So, we would rather protect bears than people. We are only 10 - 20% as important as a bear.

      I agree. There are no bears in my country but even though this was only a small black bear and not a grizzly or a polar bear I'd have probably unloaded the whole can on it. I know it's probably just inquisitive but there's no way I'd be taking that chance. This guy must have balls of steel because if I was walking through somewhere with bears I'd be taking at least one gun and probably someone else who knew what they were doing with me to fire it if needs be. I'd never want to kill a bear or a wolf or mountain lion but if I felt threatened by one I'd fire a warning shot or two and if it kept approaching I'd shoot it to death as quickly and cleanly as possible but I'd be very shook up and upset afterwards I can guarantee that. This guy made that look like a walk in the park in my opinion.
