    Heath, we’re so spoiled now… I remember a time when I was happy to be able to just watch stuff at home as many times as I wanted. Even if it was a television broadcast (usually edited) or on vhs etc. These new HD and UHD transfers by and large, look fantastic! I’m not going to sit here and tell you I’m never disappointed by a release or a transfer… but again, that’s because I’m so spoiled with all that we have now, and even I get caught up in the minutia of negativity sometimes. But we really do have it the best we’ve ever had, and you really like to shine a light on that. I just want to say that I appreciate the perspective that offers. I find your videos often help with putting this whole film (and tv) appreciation into a fun perspective. Your enthusiasm and appreciation for this stuff really comes through in your content. Thank you sir.

    I’d be interested in a video explaining why some movies don’t transfer well to 4K & why some do. I’ve watched some videos from a channel called damn fool idealistic (I can’t remember the rest) & he breaks down the home video history of a movie which I find super interesting because you get to understand why some things look or sound the way they do. (People thought I was crazy when I would say “idk this movie sounds weird now I don’t remember it sounding like that” turns out I was right) I’m not asking you do that but I know you like to educate & inform so maybe explaining why film grain shouldn’t be removed or why an “ok” restoration can be the best that can be hoped for from a specific movie. I hear ya! Honestly, I've said about all I ever had to say about the subject in a whole bunch of videos, including but not limited to this one:
      ruclips.net/video/edoRxHQm97w/видео.html
      I believe too many of us--including myself--are talking way too much about quality and missing the forest for the trees. Every release is getting torn apart, over-analyzed, and given a failing grade. For some RUclipsrs, no 4K, Blu-ray, or even DVD will ever be good enough. There's always a better audio mix, or a better transfer, or a more accurate color spectrum. But 99.9999% of movie fans don't care about that. They just want to watch a movie, have a good time, and move on with their lives. Film is an artform, but some of us are spending all our time looking at the texture of the canvas and not on pulling back and looking at the picture that's been painted. The whole thing wears me out and actually makes me want to walk away from the conversation altogether.
      This comment is certainly not directed at you and I appreciate the suggestion! I've just been kind of worn down by the quality conversations over the years. I feel a little guilty even admitting it, but trying to have meaningful discussions in the age of Reddit and TikTok has taken a toll on me. I feel like I’m trying to hold back the tide.

    Your comments on not getting some media really hit me. I find so many film lovers and collectors talk about horror and cult - and so far I don't get it. Part of it is I'm a big animal lover and animal harm depictions in film really turns me off and I've stayed away from a whole bunch of stuff because of it. I haven't seen Apocalypse Now because of what I heard happens at the end. It would be too upsetting for me and it sticks with me. Ultimately you have to enjoy what you consume, and not everything is for everybody, and that's totally okay. Maybe I'll be in a headspace or state where I would be open to those genre, but not yet.

    Agree with your comment about streaming quality vs. physical. Having above average internet, I've seen many films where the difference in the two is extremely negligible. There is an argument that the digital format is more susceptible to censorship, sure. But I don't think FOOTLOOSE, for example, is important or edgy enough to worry about it falling victim to malicious editing. I need to train myself to really decide what's worth having in my possession and what isn't. Like records and cd, there is a fun exercise that comes with inserting a movie disc. However, when I want to listen to music, I almost always choose what's most convenient.

    • @robertt9342
      @robertt9342 7 месяцев назад +1

      Most people can’t tell the difference between good streaming and physical, but some really can.
      It think some of the points as mentioned in your post are the following:
      1) Censorship changing films to meet today’s sensibilities.
      2) Revisionist changes. Not to be confused with censorship. This is more about changing the art because of how the filmmaker feels now.
      3) Availability/convenience.
      Personally I have mixed feelings about the censorship one, the problem for me is when it could lead to a rewrite of history. I don’t think this has been done to an extreme.
      Streaming is more convenient, but it’s not always available.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  7 месяцев назад +1

      @vanceshepard1618 I think a person's internet connection has a lot to do with how things look. I upgraded to fiber optics a couple of years ago and a lot of my streams now, especially through Apple TV, look REALLY close to a disc. Not everything looks that good--like if I stream from Hulu or Peacock, but for things I've bought digitally, the difference is negligible. Certainly not noticeable enough to dismiss as a viable way to watch something.
      I see the reply about censorship and revisionist edits, and I agree to an extent, but we also have to acknowledge sometimes those cuts affect the physical copy too.
      I'll continue to advocate that most of us are watching things however we can--disc, digital, streaming, the theater, and even broadcast television.

I'm tired of hundreds of people on Reddit trashing a 4K release because it has visible grain. They say "I thought this was supposed to be in HD! Clearly they didn't remaster it properly because I see lots of grain everywhere." This is the dumbest thing anyone could say about a 4K remaster, but a HUGE portion of the fan base is saying it.
