About Ryunohara: Ryunohara is a kominka cafe nestled deep in the mountains of Ryujinmura, Wakayama Prefecture. We make our own tea from wild tea plants, and serve it at Ryunohara Kissa, where you'll also find a small library of books about Japanese culture. We also serve Singaporean Hainanese satay skewers alongside stewed meats, fried rice, and other dishes that showcase ingredients from across the Kishu region. The two buildings on the property are traditionally-built 60 and 120 year-old farmhouses, .
That’s sweet of you to welcome 🐶 into your tea house. Dogs bring good luck and may that boost your business too. Perhaps, set aside some cloths next to the disinfectant for ppl to clean their dogs feet before entering, it keeps your interior clean and less hygiene concern too
Hi! Yes we have doggie paw wipes at the door.
What an amazing tea house. I would stay all day drinking tea and reading books. You have worked so hard and the rewards are now being seen. Congratulations to you and hopefully when Japan opens to visitors again you will get many more people coming for tea.
Thanks for the kind and encouraging message! Hope you can come visit someday!
Looks wonderful. Love to visit on my next trip to Japan.

Congratulations XJ, I love the wooden interior design! It really brings you back to the ancient Japan!
Thanks Mummy
This is one of my favorite videos you’ve shared! Love seeing you so happy and loved learning about everything. Congratulations 🎉 - so happy for you & hope to visit one day.
It’s also the longest so far - thanks for sticking it through!
great!
Nice!
I love the windows ❤❤❤❤❤
Congratulations! What a huge amount of love-labour you have put into your wonderful space. Your level of care and attention to detail would make the original owners and builders very proud, I am certain, as should you be. I lived in a traditional house in Kyoto for a few years and miss it's special features and considerations often (even in spite of how cold it was!). I love what you are doing, and how thoroughly you are doing it. Much respect to you!
Thanks Dia! The house suffered from too many badly-thought modifications in recent years (like tape on wooden panels and screws on beautiful pillars) so I really felt that it had to be restored as much as possible but with flooring to better suit modern people.
It's a bit painful to see those thoughtless modifications, isn't it?! We had exactly the same experience when we first moved into ours, albeit to a lesser extent. It felt good to return the house to as close to it's original style and design, and we could feel the house appreciating it. I'm sure your tea house appreciates all the love, very much. P.S. nice maps! :)
Your dog is majestic
Haha she looks bigger here than in real life. I don’t think you’d call her majestic if you saw her.
Nice video ❤❤❤❤❤
Love the moment when the rock “Stand up” while you guys are loving it, it’s a blessing from my prospective 🙂. Wish Ryunohara a big success and enlightening your life!
It is! Really glad it came out this way. Thanks for the well wishes!

I would imagine table linens and other cloth items would store nicely in the mothball tansu…
One day when I get to visit Japan I'll come to your tea house. It turned out wonderful, all your hard work and dedication was totally worth it. You are an incredibly inspireing person, keep going!
Thanks for the support Roman!
I love it! Amazing from the original state to present. Can definitely see myself sitting on the engawa looking out at the beautiful view or in the reading area. You and everyone who contributed have a lot to be proud of!!☺️👍
Thank you! The engawa should be really nice to sit on when the weather cools. Too hot right now!
@@Ryunohara Nice!👍

Thanks Mikey!
Ryunohaar,unreal !)
It’s all real! 😛
Those single paned sliding windows look freezing in the winter.
They are 🥶
I wish i live there bro
You really should get that Zen garden done as soon as possible and have it blessed if they do that. Because it’s already as zen garden in my mind you just need a few little white pebbles all the way around raked in a really pretty way. very nice accidental job
Yes need those pebbles! The pebbles aren’t cheap by the way. A small bag can cost well over US$100, especially those used in Kyoto’s dry gardens.
that peony table is kamakura-bori...
As you know, Bodhidarma is said to have invented tea drinking in a rather startling way, hence his permanently staring eyes. 😅 He's priceless, so I guess you got a good bargain there! 😄🙏
I didn’t know that! Just searched on Google and found this: “Bodhidharma, the sixth century Indian priest who brought Buddhism to China, spent nine years facing a cave wall in meditation. Furious with his inability to stay awake, he is said to have ripped off his eyelids. On falling to the ground, they became tea plants.”
😳
Hi, @ryunohara Thanks for the explanation. I am also looking for new sliding doors for my Engawa. Did you mention that instead of glass you use plastic? Guess a bit warmer in winter and don't have the sounds when you have a strong wind...
Do you mind sharing with me the exact costs per door? Thanks!
Yes it’s plexiglass for safety reasons. It won’t break in typhoons and children won’t get hurt if they run into the doors. Each door cost US$300.
This looks great--you've done a great job!
You must have met Alex Kerr at some point--do you have his books, too?
Also, how hard is it to reach your village if you're traveling by train? (I live in Toyama, so I can figure out how to get as far as Kyoto or Osaka pretty easily...)
Thanks! Yes I’ve met Alex. His calligraphy is lying around a few of the tables in the main house! You can reach Ryujin by taking the train from Osaka to Kii-Tanabe Station then transferring to Ryujin Bus (bound for Ryujin Onsen, alight at Terano). The bus ride takes about an hour.
@@Ryunohara Thanks for the information! I'll put it on my list of places to visit... sometime in the future! 🙂
Good luck to you. So beautiful, an honor to Japan. As far as not being a seller helper I really understand. But but I wish you could help me too, and I think you helped my decision not to go through with purchase. Too physical even though I did so many properties in states, I am old now, so rent cheap is an option why not. Where is this?
Just came across these videos and love the content I was looking into doing stuff like this and wondering how it all works do you have investors or anything or all done privately?
Hi! I used to work as a tour guide and saved up in order to employ staff and expand the business but Covid struck and those plans were scuttled. I used the savings to renovate the main house. This teahouse was renovated with some of those savings and in part with a subsidy from the national government that we successfully applied for.
You’ll hear me talk about it in some of the previous videos, but in short the subsidy was set up to help businesses affected by Covid change their business models (like mine, tour guiding to cafe).
Lastly lots of others have given time and objects so that I could keep costs low - the carpenter for example did windows for free, the electrician made modifications above and beyond what I paid for, and others gave shelves, vases, etc.
@@Ryunohara yea I’ve heard how rough it can be for small business owners but glad your making the best of it and bouncing back like this that’s awesome and honestly always wanted to move there and wanted to renovate Akiya I mean if when you build back up I’ll keep an eye out if you ever higher foreigners for your business or want investments
hi Lee, We have sent you a message on your Ryuonhara website.
Bigger and far better than any million dollar HDB flat.
Yes, loving it!
What wildlife is there in the mountains of Wakayama? One of my most exciting moments in Japan many years ago was nearly driving into a small black bear in the mountain roads of Hiroshima-ken.
We have black bears (occasionally sighted), deer, Japanese serow, wild boars, monkeys, etc
Are there public transportation to your tea house?
WHY HELLO THERE ! YOU DID IT ! A FANTASTIC RENOVATION ! WHAT PRIDE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP! CAN YOU HELP ME DO THE SAME WITH LOCATING A KYOTO STYLE INN ?
THANK YOU
Hello there, thanks for the kind words. I’m not in the business of purchasing Kyoto inns though- you might Hachise’s services useful. They are a realtor in Kyoto with an English-speaking team.
