“I don't accept the currently fashionable assertion that any view is automatically as worthy of respect as any equal and opposite view. My view is that the moon is made of rock. If someone says to me 'Well, you haven't been there, have you? You haven't seen it for yourself, so my view that it is made of Norwegian Beaver Cheese is equally valid' - then I can't even be bothered to argue. There is such a thing as the #burdenofproof, and in the case of god, as in the case of the composition of the moon, this has shifted radically. God used to be the best explanation we'd got, and we've now got vastly better ones. God is no longer an explanation of anything but has instead become something that would itself need an insurmountable amount of explaining. So I don't think that being convinced that there is no god is as irrational or arrogant a point of view as belief that there is. I don't think the matter calls for even-handedness at all.”

I agree with Douglas Adams 100%. The burden of proof falls on the shoulders of those who foolishly claim a god exist. Theists are simply the stupid among the ignorant.

I'm ashamed to admit I was a theist for many years. Most of my friends had read the Hitchhiker's Guide series in middle school and reached a higher plane of understanding than I had at the time. Not that I had much of a choice - my parents were staunch believers. It was a lot easier to stick my head in the sand until I had the combination of courage and curiosity to find out the truth about gods.

For the first 5-10 years I would argue with theists. I've reached a point where it's not even worth any attempts to educate them. You have to be honest and willing to grow up to become an atheist.
"As a child you are told that if you hold a seashell to your ear you can hear the sea. Those that grow up are able to figure out that it’s not the sea that they’re hearing."

It takes time for any theist to be cured of their brainwashing. I know, I was one. The key is to find the ones that value truth more than comfort, and fill in the gaps they have in their knowledge. Religions discourage logical thought, so exposing their lies is the first step. After the theist's eyes have been opened they must make the choice themselves: Be religious, or be honest. There are enough who choose the latter to give me hope that we might discard religion in time to escape extinction.

Shame is usually a rather useless emotion. I suggest you try to find a use for it, and when you realize there is none, chuck it.

Demanding an explanation is in itself a denial.
