This car was on pole in 1971 at Daytona. Absolutely perfect by Roger Penske. Sadly it was in a few accidents overnight. The 917 needed its transmission rebuilt in the pit lane. Mark and David still came in third. What a great effort.
    Thank you Mr Roger Penske

Along with the P series these are one of the best looking race cars. A great time for Sports prototypes the 1970’s were. Fantastic video. Thanks for posting. Cheers from Texas.

When I was young the 512 was by far my favorite Ferrari due to Steve McQueens Le Mans. I remembered coming home every day (I’m not exaggerating) from preschool and watching it. However as I’ve gotten older I now prefer both the 312P and 312PB, but I still have a soft spot for the 512!

You have to love that being nearly as good as a 917 is a mark of greatness.

The Penske/Kirk White 512 S/M mentioned briefly in the video was in fact almost entirely re-engineered/re-built under the direction of Mark Donohue as the car was not, to put it charitably, up to Penske standards. Even with that, the car's finishing record was poor. In sum, the 512 S/M probably suffered from Ferrari's dicey financial situation at the time, as well as the company's systemic issues, both organizational and political.

"I told you not to (mess) with Rodriguez". Only Siffert safely could, with sister Gulf. Marvellous times if you could get your hands on the Balsawood. To me these Modena models even looked strangely like fast rags. And Pedro made the fiinal mistake. Thankyou for the red. :)

B.t.w. thankyou for that Daytona bank snippet ... like some bloodthirsty white bat from outerspace chasing in a stampede 😉

A small precision: Ferrari didn't win the 1973 World Championship. Matra won.

They failed miserably against those 917's. I was a kid then. You just had to guess what was the Porsche team who was going to win.

Beautiful car, but lost everything... that's Ferrari

It’s not a completely fair assessment. The 512S won the 12-h of Sebring in 1970.
It had reliability problems, like the Porsche 917 before it, but at the end of 1970 it had become a potentially winning car.
Regulation changes persuaded Ferrari to develop a 3-liter car from 1971, in fact abandoning the development of this beautiful beast.

So for you the Ferrari Lost everything, sure you have to study more about races.

Didn’t lose everything. Typical Porsche fan. No, it didn’t win as much as the 917 but it did win some races. Duh

Reliability was a big issue. And your AI narrator needs to slow down
