Three titles in ten years: Jackie Stewart, the flying scot
Few drivers have done more for F1 than Jackie Stewart. Nicknamed "The Flying Scot," he won the world championship three times, raced in the Indy 500, Can-Am, and F2, and was also a TV commentator and team owner. He received numerous honors, including being knighted by Great Britain. Beyond his achievements on the track, his greatest contribution was his fight for better conditions in the sport, especially regarding safety. In a competition that claimed the lives of at least one driver every year, safety was negligible, with danger being seen as the "charm" of the category. Thanks to his efforts, motorsport has become safer and many tragedies have been prevented.

Win or Wall: The Fittipaldi vs. Unser Jr. duel at the '89 Indy 500
Просмотров 878День назад
The first Brazilian victory at the Indianapolis 500 was hard-fought: despite being dominant, Emerson Fittipaldi had to contend with yellow flags, entire packs of backmarkers, and pit stop errors. Against the Brazilian, drivers like Al Unser Jr., Rick Mears, and Michael Andretti kept up the pressure, with Little Al creating one of the most iconic moments of the historic race. The six-wheeler cars of F1: Tyrrell P34, March 2-4-0 and Williams FW08B
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.21 день назад
In a time when practically all teams used the same engines, daring design was essential. Even with all the innovation emerging, nothing prepared F1 fans for the P34. The legendary car designed by Derek Gardner for Tyrrell wasn't a big winner, but it had its glories in the hands of Patrick Depailler, Jody Scheckter, and Ronnie Peterson. The four small wheels forming the front axle had a single m...
Ferrari 512 S/M: the italian answer against Porsche
Просмотров 13 тыс.Месяц назад
In the early 1970s, motorsport was making great strides in terms of speed. Aerodynamics began to receive special attention from manufacturers, both in Formula 1 and in the World Sportscar Championship. At that time, the cars competing in endurance races had performance levels comparable to those of single-seater category cars, and Ferrari paid a lot of attention to the competition. Focusing on ...
From two engines to six wheels: the oddities of the Indy 500

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has always been a fertile ground for new ideas. Over decades of competition, many innovations have emerged at the Brickyard along with numerous oddities, often in attempts to gain some advantage without any theoretical basis. Employing a blend of technique and practical exploration, constructors tried a bit of everything in their designs, from cars with two engin...
Top 5: When the last place wins the race (F1)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 месяца назад
Winning an F1 race isn't easy. Winning after dropping to last is even tougher. In fact, it's such a difficult feat that only 5 drivers have managed to accomplish it (and one of them did it twice!). Of all these instances, one wasn't considered: Fernando Alonso's victory at the 2008 Singapore GP, influenced by the manipulation carried out by Flavio Briatore, the infamous "Singaporegate." Other t...
The race nobody wanted to win: the 1982 Monaco GP
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.2 месяца назад
Formula One has experienced many unusual situations throughout its history. One of these occurred at the traditional Monaco Grand Prix in its 1982 edition: in the last three laps, one driver after another retired, always after taking the lead. In an increasingly shorter grid, the one who managed to stay on the track emerged victorious. It was the most chaotic final laps of all time, a GP which ...
The end of an era: the fall of Brabham F1 team
Просмотров 9902 месяца назад
Born in a romantic period of Formula 1, the Brabham team collected victories during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The team created by three-time champion Jack Brabham remained alive on the grid until the mid-80s, when a series of issues forced the team to withdraw. After a year out, the iconic name returned to compete in the category, but much had already changed, and Brabham was no longer the victori...

A classic in Indycar, Road America brings together the best a road circuit can offer: with long straights, open, closed, blind turns, ample room for overtaking, among others, the track located in Elkhart Lake has been winning fans since its creation in the 1950s. With very few alterations since its inception, the layout has remained one of the best, if not the best, road circuits in the United ...

The beginning of the Senna vs. Prost war: the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix

Up until the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix, the rivalry between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost was relatively calm, although there were occasional intense moments in their battle for victory. Extreme ground effect in F1: Brabham BT46B and Lotus 88

The Venturi effect (or Venturi tube) was the primary element used in the racing cars of Formula 1 from the late '70s to the early '80s. The technology mimics the effect of an airplane wing but in reverse: to keep the car on the ground, it reduces the air pressure underneath, allowing the higher pressure above (which is greater) to push it down to the ground. Two notable examples of its operatio...

If I remember correctly, Al Jr had been involved in 3 previous "questionable incidents" prior to this, where he basically took a page from Paul Tracy's book and punted cars off track--- Mario twice, and Emmo once. This was his second attempt with Emmo, and the result was a bitter pill to swallow. Al Jr's driving improved after this, though, and I don't recall him trying this crap again since it cost him a potential 500 win.

I used to be a sign painter and did lettering for race cars decades ago. Never got near anything big time like an Indy car. What I can't figure out is at 4:24, some of the worst-looking lettering ever seen for "Pat Clancy Spl" and the number is on this magnificent car that must've had tens of thousands of man hours and in today's money, hundreds of thousands if not millions, of dollars into its development. So they just let some mechanic or random guy do a half-baked job on that lettering? Like they couldn't have found some legitimate sign painter to spend a couple hours doing it up right? That looks worse than the graphics on a jalopy at the average small town dirt track. Ridiculous!

This car was on pole in 1971 at Daytona. Absolutely perfect by Roger Penske. Sadly it was in a few accidents overnight. The 917 needed its transmission rebuilt in the pit lane. Mark and David still came in third. What a great effort. Thank you Mr Roger Penske

The Penske/Kirk White 512 S/M mentioned briefly in the video was in fact almost entirely re-engineered/re-built under the direction of Mark Donohue as the car was not, to put it charitably, up to Penske standards. Even with that, the car's finishing record was poor. In sum, the 512 S/M probably suffered from Ferrari's dicey financial situation at the time, as well as the company's systemic issues, both organizational and political.

It’s not a completely fair assessment. The 512S won the 12-h of Sebring in 1970. It had reliability problems, like the Porsche 917 before it, but at the end of 1970 it had become a potentially winning car. Regulation changes persuaded Ferrari to develop a 3-liter car from 1971, in fact abandoning the development of this beautiful beast.

Racing isn’t boring you just don’t like proper motor racing. Racing is closer and more competitive now than any other time. If you wanna see high tech massive innovation look at f1. The cars aren’t all equal they all have different approaches to the same parts. You pay for that though cause teams with cash that make good on innovation actions blow the field away and win damn near every race due to it.
