I used to get it all the time at our local chain store (it was pretty good! But just the basic salmon and cucumber rolls) and then one day it had a bone in it and I cannot anymore.
hi meimei! I'm originally from the Bay Area, but I moved away for school. Seeing you visit places near my hometown always makes me feel comforted, especially when I'm feeling homesick. Just wanted to say that I love your food videos and vlogs
i think safeway really improved their sushi game. im a sushi fanatic and honestly safeway sushi is decent when youre in a pinch and considering the price point id definitely get it.
If you have a Sprouts near you, all their sushi is $5 on Wednesdays. Not a huge selection, but I typically get it every couple of weeks, and you can see them making it fresh there at the store. Also, the last time I had Safeway sushi, they had a Mexican-inspired roll with mango on top, and carrot on the side instead of ginger (which I do normally eat by the way). I wish we had of those asian markets here in Sacramento
I used to work at Suruki Supermarket when I was in high school 🥰 such an amazing and sweet family run supermarket and their sushi is so great. Also the bento boxes next door are 💯
Yay your back with another video! Fun fact- your the only RUclipsr I watch faithfully both of your channels I love your content ❤️ it’s always so genuine & heartwarming
im so happy to hear about the Japanese markets. I haven't tried their food yet. Definitely going to check these out. My GO TO supermarket sushi, when I'm in SJ, is going to H Mart! I love salmon and I get the sashimi in the back and then I go to the front and grab kimchi fried rice in the ready-to-eat warmer. SOOOO BOMB.
The first time I ever tried sushi was supermarket sushi from Publix! I fell in love with sushi ever since! Even my 8 year old daughter loves salmon nigiri! Now I usually get sushi at a restaurant, but we just got a sprouts market in my town and their sushi is amazing!
ok so i'm like liiiiiterally from the same area lol and i'm new to your channel but you GOTTA do like a musubi haul video from takahashi if you haven't already! 🙂
The only supermarket sushi that I’ve actually enjoyed is from a store here in Idaho - Albertsons’s. Not only is it fresh, but it also has wholesome ingredients. They make it fresh everyday, so they don’t have to have preservatives. Also, they have some nigiri options without soy, which works well for me since I have food sensitivities.
Hi! I just found you and I love sushi and get supermarket sushi so… of your list I have Mitsua, Murakai, Vons (Safeway/Albertsons) and Whole Foods. Here there is also Ralph’s (Kroger) with live sushi chefs. Murakai is my go to for convenience. I used to get Vons and actually would rank it higher from my experience. They were always generous and reasonable and tasty. The store I liked was closed. I didn’t like what I had from WFM so I didn’t go back when Murakai is so convenient. Mitsua is just too far but has a great food court I want to go back to. Close enough for something special like that. I loved your reactions, well done video. It’s after 5pm, maybe I need to hurry over to Murakai? Joe Oh, I’m in Los Angeles .
My wife and I are always making our way to the Bay Area and have hit all the places you reviewed. While I understand your limitations on trying everything they all offer this was quite informative and we look forward to going back. Cheers !
the comment "i like a lot of raw fish in my sushi" xD All i thought was " YOU LIKE YOUR SUSHI TO BE SUSHI?!" love the video, definitely need to see what markets are around me now!
Man I wish the grocery stores near me had selection like that! There’s one place then makes it pretty good in-store, but there’s a different one who gets the sushi shipped in and the rice is like glue 😬 And they put red bell pepper in their California roll, which I personally can’t get behind lol
Sprouts also has a sushi counter by the deli. I haven’t tried but I see a lot of people buy them specially when they have their special $5 sales. I enjoy watching your videos and happy to see all the local places you go to, some I’ve tried too. Love your honest reviews! Keep it going!! 😘💕
I ws googling each location as you ate to see how close they were to me in the upper East Bay. There's a little Japanese store up here - Yaoya-san - that has sushi and bento. Better than Safeway but not as good as fresh. Love your vids! And your Mom!
Wasabi and Ginger are nice add on if the rice is bad ...definitely looking at the 4pm sushi price cuts ...in SF sushi plates are $18 for ten pieces at lunch time
Thanks for this video! Now I’m craving sushi 😊. Please do a Poke Bowl video. I suspect my go-to place is just ok. It would be great to discover some new places.
Hey meimei, just an FYI for the future, there's a Korean grocery store called Megamart in Sunnyvale that IMO has the best supermarket sushi you can find. Big pieces of fish, good rice-to-fish ratio, and good rice as well! Hope to see another one in the future!
I've eaten whole foods sushi - it really varies by location. I have never eaten safeway sushi. I like to eat the ginger after I finished all the sushi. It's like a little refreshing dessert.
I wish we had Japanese grocery stores here! In NC I think the best supermarket sushi I have had is from Wegmans. Harris Teeter sometimes has a deal that is hard to resist, and scratches the sushi itch :D
I MeiMei. Loved this ep. I go to my local Ralph’s if I want sushi in a rush. I get their spicy tuna crunch roll. This is not a normal item so they make it fresh. I just do a little shopping and come back to pick it up.
The best supermarket sushi I ever had was at HEB in Texas. Idk why but it was always so good, and the crawfish one was sooo good. The only thing I miss from Texas tbh 😂
We are now in Houston Texas, but was stationed in Southern California. The best supermarket sushi my wife and I have ever had and still crave is from Tokyo Central in SoCal. I thought that there was one close to your area. I guess I am wrong. If you get a chance and see one, take a chance. They are awesome! USMC Retire Family
Thanks for the video on sushi! Loved it! I was just curious-how was the flavoring of the rices? I find that most sushi rice from grocery stores have little to no seasoning.
Not sure where you are at but if you live in the Southern California area or New York, try Sugarfish restaurant. The sushi rice is amazing. The place isn’t cheap though.
Have you tried supermarket sushi before? If so, what did you think? 👇
Nope!
I did at Wegmans, it was pretty good! But nothing compared to restaurant sushi! 🍱 🍣
I must admit that I love supermarket sushi. I can’t help but get a roll whenever I get my groceries lol 🩷
Yes, it honestly depends on who is preparing the sushi.
I used to get it all the time at our local chain store (it was pretty good! But just the basic salmon and cucumber rolls) and then one day it had a bone in it and I cannot anymore.

Rank the BAY AREA RAMEN spots!

Fun fact- if you go to Tokyo central later in the evening, like 7pm or later, most of the sushi is 20% off!

I think it’ll be really fun to see you do a really nice omakase dinner with bird!

Albertsons and Safeway are the same thing.
They weren’t when I was growing up. Albertson’s originated here in Idaho. I didn’t realize they were bought out. 😢
@@angelahancock7916Really? I’m in California and Albertsons/Vons/Safeway are all together I think Kroger is trying to buy them all out though

If you ever are near a store named Wegmans, you NEED to try their sushi, it's so good and fresh

Wegmans is the best.

H-Mart and 99 Ranch Markets are great Asian markets for quality and affordable sushi 🍣
Love your vids! Looks scrumptious!

Ginger is a must! I like Osaka market, they use a good quality rice, makes a big difference.

I've always preferred the Safeway nigiri over the Whole Food ones. I am not a sushi roll person, I just like the simplicity of nigiri.
Gotta try HMart's sushi selection next time!
I heard good things about Sprout's sushi. Never tried it myself but I know they have $5 specials on Wednesdays. 😊
omg would love to hear your thoughts on HEB sushi if you ever make it back to Texas!
Looks yummy! 😋
surprisingly there were lots of good options!!
Hey meimei, just an FYI for the future, there's a Korean grocery store called Megamart in Sunnyvale that IMO has the best supermarket sushi you can find. Big pieces of fish, good rice-to-fish ratio, and good rice as well! Hope to see another one in the future!
I love a salmon and avocado roll
I love freshly pickled ginger with my sushi. It clears my palate. 😅 almost like how cucumber kimchi is a must during kbbq
I adore pickled ginger. I kinda feel that way about the wasabi but if a little bit touches the roll, I'll still eat it 🤷🏾♀️😂
The nijiya market that's where Emily Mariko shops and I'm wondering where that is in the Bay area
Try the sushi wprouts and Silver Creek Market in San Jose, Ca. And let me know your thoughts.
I've eaten whole foods sushi - it really varies by location. I have never eaten safeway sushi. I like to eat the ginger after I finished all the sushi. It's like a little refreshing dessert.

What about the rice? Sushi means vinegared rice. Is it tender without being sticky, does it have enough seasoning?
i love your vids mei mei!
ahh thank you so much!! appreciate you ❤❤❤
You have to find a Wegmans and try their sushi 😊 Also Sam’s club has sushi too and it’s not bad
Great video!

Yes, I love ginger and eat with sushi to clear my palette for the next piece.
Hope you got an ice chest to store leftover for Bird 😅
