Replayed the old Streets of Rage trilogies on the various Xbox 360 / PS3 SEGA collections, last time was a year to year and a half ago.... Visited my sister for a weekend and we just sat down and played through all three (nearly beat the first in one sitting before skipping to get to the other two!). Sadly, our session with SOR2 was the shortest but it was definitely the best one!
13:54 to be fair, I never have this issue of "waiting for an enemy to return to screen" lol, when an enemy is close to screen you can just grapple and throw them behind you and follow up with more attacks continuously. Or take advantage of enemy stagger, and punch them 1-2, wait a sec repeat to keep them locked in place. Basically a form of juggle.
They kept the enemy stagger in for the retro characters only. I managed to stun-lock the very last boss using SoR 1 retro Axel. The stun lock disappears when you use the updated characters though.
I’m so happy with this game i have a feeling that more goodies will be added in future update like SOR4 skins playable characters like Estel and other bosses hoping for extra levels or a option to have the characters move a bit faster I would even love a remake of SOR 1-3 with the new art style I would pay extra for that
I wasn't sure about the art style but after playing the first few levels i was a very happy chappy. This is a true sequel and arguably the best of the series. The game is short but very addictive, finished on normal in about 2 1/2 hours then immediately started a new game with another character...so much fun.
Regarding the Xboxone version, they tweeted today its one version behind the other versions and the video options will be added next week in a patch that add filters etc
Worth noting: this was written using MonoGame, the spiritual successor to Microsoft's XNA, which is OpenSource and runs on everything from mobiles to consoles now. It's a framework, not an engine. You create your own custom engine with the APIs MonoGame provides. Lots of great games have used MonoGame recently, including Celeste, Stardew Valley and more. If you are an indie game dev, check it out!!
Absolutely wonderful game and it was brilliant to hear Richard's opinion on it given his history with the series. It's great to see so many seemingly little design choices making a huge difference to the flow of the game and its easily one of my favourites this year
The face of Joe Musashi appears in the baground (paint on a wall) and the developpers said they're working on an other project with SEGA materials. So, maybe it's a clue.
The Windows Store version does run if you expand the window to full screen. Edit: Launch game, exxpand the window, then quickly open task manager to get the game to start. Seriously.
It crashes for me after the intro, fullscreen or not. RTX 2070, Ryzen 5 2600x, 16GB RAM. Windows Store has always been kinda shit, performance/stability-wise...
All you have to do is disconnect your monitor, pray to satan, connect a PS/2 keyboard, hold down G A T E S at the same time and plug it back it while booting it up. Easy as.
Yeah, worked for me the first time too. But considering I was literally playing Gears Tactics yesterday, (What am I going to do, pay Steam to play this game? What do I have Game Pass for then?) not really surprised.
8:20 - Hey John, I've noticed issues with Game Pass PC games as well -- game-specific issues; worst one was losing an entire save game profile in Cross Code; Gears 5 PC had the entire game duplicated from one HD to the main one, with temporary files or something, because its update was delayed for months and I began downloading other games past it (at least crossplay and cross save worked). Rage 2's audio is weird as well; sounding like it needs better equalizing, or music cutting out subtly altogether every now and then (I actually thought it was a design choice, since Mad Max, an aesthetically similar open world game, had little to no music during quiet moments sometimes). Killer instinct DE doesn't even allow you to play unlocked paid characters. Troubleshooting is near impossible for laypeople, because Game Pass owners do not own their games, so Microsoft has carefully and cleverly hidden installation files for any directory you choose to install these games into. I haven't had much luck trying old pre-Windows 10 tricks to see hidden files. Gears 5 PC also randomly uninstalled itself as well, but still had it's HD space allotment taken up, AFAIK.
The Nintendo Switch version is fluid at 60 FPS and love it to take it on the go and play at homes. The only thing I hate about this online gaming and people kept on leaving
This is why I love SoR4...at about 14:14 ish mark you guys sound like my friends n I did back in high school after coming back to school from the arcade!! For real! Lol. It’s such a lost art, that talking about the different moves you can do etc. Awesome presentation guys! Thanks so much for it. PS I bough SoR4 for my Xbox One AND my switch lite.
I think it is incredible that as of this generation we have truly mastered the "drawing" graphics. We had fighterz, which was 3d, and we have had 2d games like this before, but of all the ones I have seen this is my personal favorite in terms of appearance.
The switch version is great but not perfect. Either the resolution or asset quality is a tiny bit lower than other platforms but the average person wouldnt even notice it. The chinatown stage does have slowdown though especially in the kitchen area. It's not a deal breaker but if someone is on the fence on which version to get hope this helps.
I've looked everywhere, but can't seem to find the answer. Is there any sort of crossplay available in Streets of Rage 4? Can PC players co-op with say xbox or ps4 owners?
I know it's amazing. I have an eye problem that makes video games difficult for me to see. So it's really nice to be able to try games out before I buy them. There have been a ton of times where I purchased a game and for some reason the graphics dating too difficult for me to play the game due to my eye problem
It's funny, any semi-negative reactions to SoR 4 consist of: "It sticks too close to previous SoR games." (that's actually a positive). Or people saying, "Hey, you gave this a 90 or Essential score, but does it really deserve that score for a genre that not everyone likes?" If you're someone that doesn't actively seek out beat 'em ups, why would high scores bother you either way? Hehe. Oddball comments.
It's funny, most of my complaints are with the mechanics they changed: defensive specials don't break enemy combos, some enemies now get that really obnoxious no-flinch state and it's thoroughly annoying, and certain lengthy grapple attacks can't be cancelled into a special so you end up getting smacked - Max's bear punch is virtually unusable because of it. (Also the retro soundtrack doesn't ever seem to pick tunes that are appropriate to the level, and they all feel thrown in at random for last minute fanservice.) Don't get me wrong though, I like literally everything else about the game... especially Cherry's throw where she does an ura nage and pounds them with a guitar on the way down.
You guys should SERIOUSLY do game reviews!! And yes, I will be getting my hands on this game too...!! Ironically, I was playing SoF 2 last night. Sweet nostalgia
I've copped a ps4 version, a switch version, and a digi switch version just to show my support! The dev team REALLY put all their effort in to this and it's so awesome to hear it's the SAME PORT for ALL console versions. This is great!
Not sure why you focus only on visuals... what about audio comparison between formats? You do that for retro/emulator analyses. I feel the audio in the Nintendo Switch version of SoR4 is too quiet (compared to other Switch games), a low bitrate and lacking in bass. I’d like to know if this is common across all platforms.
I have PC Game Pass and using the Windows Store gives me errors but using the XBox beta app allows me to download them fine. Maybe you guys at Digital Foundry could try that. It does have fewer video options, they seem to mimic the PS4 and Switch options, give or take a few.
I see the switch version has more choices in the video options menu. I see the ability to make the game look like the retro look like the older games. I have the Xbox one version but I don’t see these choices in the video options section. Is it because you have to unlock these options? Can someone please confirm this? I can’t imagine they didn’t include these option settings on the Xbox one.
For the record, you couldn't even buy Final Fight Guy back in the day, at least here in the states. It was a Blockbuster Video rental exclusive. Definitely one of the most absurd moves in Capcom history.
The main theme that plays on the title screen to Streets of Rage 4 just brings a flood of nostalgic memories rushing back of some damn good times when Sega really were at the top of their game. Streets of Rage 4 has surpassed expectations and has made me feel like a care-free kid again. Thank you Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games.
I really wanted to get this on Switch. And I still might grab it on a sale or something down the road. But I went with the PC (Steam) version. I’m hoping the mod community will get their hands on this and add in characters and features that are still missing here. Unless the devs add updates later...?
Does downloading from the Xbox PC Beta app work instead of from the Windows Store app? I'm sure it's the same version, but wondering if it delivered it any differently.

The b-roll footage of John's Switch Lite playing the game is beautiful. It looks so vibrant.
Buyed from limited run!!! Thanks a lot for this videos, John, it really helps to make best purchase. Keep the excellent job, greetings from Mexico!!!
Does anyone know how the switch online is? I have had problems with Mario maker online with lag etc. If anyone could help that would be great.
What an amazing comeback!!!
Yep they nailed the feeling of the old golden era of gaming I hope next golden axe
@@medjrikais2419 no they messed it up. The art style is terrible
Absolutely wonderful game and it was brilliant to hear Richard's opinion on it given his history with the series. It's great to see so many seemingly little design choices making a huge difference to the flow of the game and its easily one of my favourites this year
Would love to see this engine used on another SEGA classic remake/sequel. Maybe Shinobi or Golden Axe?
Guernicaman I love both Shinobi and the early golden axe
The face of Joe Musashi appears in the baground (paint on a wall) and the developpers said they're working on an other project with SEGA materials. So, maybe it's a clue.
@@jppoirel - Let's hope so!
so which is the best version? im still confused
The Windows Store version does run if you expand the window to full screen.
Edit: Launch game, exxpand the window, then quickly open task manager to get the game to start. Seriously.
lmao of course
I'm using a laptop, it uses the integrated graphics, when I force discreet gpu in nvidia control centre it won't run
Nice! Well done overall on the review! It gives a refresh on the nostalgia that the Sreets Of Rage series breathes in.
Thank you, you helped me act on a sale for the Switch. Long time Streets of Rage fan since #1, didn't know which system to get it for.
They nailed it. I feel it’s truly worthy of being a numbered sequel of its namesake.
It's garbage
The Nintendo Switch version is fluid at 60 FPS and love it to take it on the go and play at homes. The only thing I hate about this online gaming and people kept on leaving
So happy with this. First full price game I have bought in years. Well done to the Devs for getting the balance of new and old right.
So no 4K on consoles?
Ha that mean machines quote at the end brought a huge smile to my face
Been waiting for this. Thanks guys!
Woah it is on Game Pass! What a great investment GP has been there for me every time I get bored straight up. TMNT would be amaze.
I know it's amazing. I have an eye problem that makes video games difficult for me to see. So it's really nice to be able to try games out before I buy them. There have been a ton of times where I purchased a game and for some reason the graphics dating too difficult for me to play the game due to my eye problem
@8:30 We all do Rich, we all do. Is there any resolution differences between Switch/PC/PS4 and any word on crossplay?
Switch have only that 2 graphic option your Xbox one has before the first patch as well. I know because I was too hasty to update the game.
It's funny, any semi-negative reactions to SoR 4 consist of: "It sticks too close to previous SoR games." (that's actually a positive). Or people saying, "Hey, you gave this a 90 or Essential score, but does it really deserve that score for a genre that not everyone likes?"
If you're someone that doesn't actively seek out beat 'em ups, why would high scores bother you either way?
(Also the retro soundtrack doesn't ever seem to pick tunes that are appropriate to the level, and they all feel thrown in at random for last minute fanservice.)
Don't get me wrong though, I like literally everything else about the game... especially Cherry's throw where she does an ura nage and pounds them with a guitar on the way down.
At 10:15 what is the console to the right of the CRT?
Digital Foundry. Basically the best RUclips gaming channel. Point.
You guys should SERIOUSLY do game reviews!! And yes, I will be getting my hands on this game too...!! Ironically, I was playing SoF 2 last night. Sweet nostalgia
I like the food options-
The Classics (Apple & Chicken)
Eastern Cuisine (Onigiri & Bowl of Ramen)
European Delicacy (Croissant & Ham)
Winning Appetizers (Onion rings & Loaded Fries)
Junk Food Galore (Pizza & Cheeseburger)
Vegan Specialty (Tofu & Salad)
Loving the game but there’s ONE issue I have is why didn’t they incorporate the evasion and dash technique from SOR3?
I wanted this to be good. Thank you.
Now I wanna see a TMNT updated game like this.
I was wondering, why do not the console versions have the low input latency option?
Are you the same Richard Leadbetter from Sega Saturn Magazine...?? Legend! That was a great publication.
I see the switch version has more choices in the video options menu. I see the ability to make the game look like the retro look like the older games. I have the Xbox one version but I don’t see these choices in the video options section. Is it because you have to unlock these options? Can someone please confirm this? I can’t imagine they didn’t include these option settings on the Xbox one.
amazing game and runs very smooth on every platform good job Digital Foundry make more videos like this
For the record, you couldn't even buy Final Fight Guy back in the day, at least here in the states. It was a Blockbuster Video rental exclusive. Definitely one of the most absurd moves in Capcom history.
Limited run games are doing physical version until may 10th
I bought the physical PS4 version, but also bought the digital version on Steam.
@@DeVstatrOmga ive got it from gamepass but also getting switch physical
so does the genesis/ mega drive mini controllers work , cause usb connection
They fix the graphics options in the Xbox version. All the options are now there.
Got this day one on ps and switch. Its my fav handheld game. Looks drop dead gorgeous on switch oled.
Really ???
you really are the best and most technical on youtube. no one would notice that from an indie game
Does downloading from the Xbox PC Beta app work instead of from the Windows Store app? I'm sure it's the same version, but wondering if it delivered it any differently.
What question is that it's detailed 2d art that's like saying what looks better skullgirls on ps4 or switch can't really tell
In the Brazilian Xbox version, the game isnt open until you turn to english the sytem language.
I think the developers have nailed it. With the art, the gameplay and the content. Awesome little game.
Extremely fun look at this game.
Originals are way better
