I appreciate the video. Shimano has been making DC reels for over 20 years. Up until now I have been avoiding them. But since I moved out of the U.S. to SE Asia. Shimano has been pushing a lot of DC reels here. I’ve been throwing bait casting reels for a better part of 36 years. Some days are good, some days are bad. That is why I always try to carry a backup and have never bought two of the same reels no matter how good I thought it was. I bought the 24 Antares DC MD yesterday and the 22 Daiwa TW HD as the backup. Before then, I have been running with a Shimano Curado 200 M with a spinning reel backup. Simplicity has its benefits. Anything that can extend your time catching fish on the water is a plus. Technology can be a beautiful thing when it functions properly. The Metanium DC is very eye catching. It was on my radar for a while until I got to see it at the tackle shop. It still looks 🔥. I don’t believe that is what I need no matter how much the tackle shop praises it. Only time will tell. Looking forward to getting out on the water and trying out my new DC. - Tight lines gentleman!
@THEREELTEST: I believe your spool tension knob is too loose. I learned the hard way on the previous MET DC. The spool is supposed to be tighter and let the DC do its job. Try doing the old baitcaster tip (tighten the spool tension knob to allow the lure to drop slowly) and you will see this reel perform at its best!!
Exactly....you can tell by the sound the DC is not operating at full capacity. Plus, too much line, and I'm guessing it's extremely cheap line from the comments in the video. Watch this channel all the time, this was the most inappropriate test of a reel I've seen yet online.
That’s terrible advice and not accurate at all on how to set a dc reel . Spool tension is set and forget ! Just barely take out the spool play with the tension knob and that’s it.. shimano has videos on RUclips for your learning pleasure
Tighten up the side to side until the popper slows noticeably on free spool then try 3 then 2 if the line stays in shape gradually back off the spool tensioner until it starts to float the line on the spool.
So I’ve taken mine out twice and so far I really enjoy it. It does amazing in the wind and that is even while using a chatterbait. I have noticed that the reel does best when you don’t try whipping the rod too hard. I learned that the other day. I was noticing that my cast were more consistent and longer vs trying to whip it out hard which I was getting shorter casts. I only tried braid with braid setting and so far the number 4 brake setting seems to be perfect. 3rd brake is still good but definitely have to watch it and keep your thumb feathering the spool. Distance seemed about the same 🤷♂️
I was finally able to take mine out today and was able to cast down to the minimum nylon setting but nothing into the braid setting the brakes are super loose. In that minimum nylon setting I was able to nearly spool the line off the reel with maybe 8 ft remaining with a Jackall rerange jerkbait.
i didn't try line modes and just ran in fluoro using 12# assassin. my experience was similar as the DC braking wasn't as robust as I'd thought, but did finally dial it in in fine tuning the spool tension. I am throwing bombs with it. also, I'm not a fan of the narrow mgl spools in the new metaniums. i get the concept, for the line to flow off more linearly, but can't tell you how many times the spool slips on me as i whip back on a cast. Digressing and speaking of bombs..they new Steez 24 with slightly smaller boost spool is an absolute casting beast.
@@livinglife3230 steez 24 is the best reel on the planet. i had sold off my met20s for SLP steez and zillion reels soon after. Met20 is great and is long casting but braking is inconsistent. i was anxious to get this met DC 70 hoping it would be the same reel as the met20 but with better braking control and consistency. so far so good especially for the price from japan.
Gotta tighten up the tension knob cause it’s a mgl also with dc the tension knob has to be more tighter than the normal dc reels. Also since you are using a top water when you were reeling it in the line is not getting tight back on to your spool cause you are skating the lure across the water and not making sure it’s getting tight back onto the reel.
I was using a swimbait with a screw lock weighing in at 3/8oz and kept having the same issue with casting as well until I popped the spool out and released the seal pressure. Casts a lot better now
I’ve tried xbraid , same thing! The breaks are to soft! I’ve lost 50 m of line now I use it like a regular Metanium thumping it! I ordered Calcutta conquest shallow edition and a 100 size spool. Regular Metanium and Calcutta conquest it’s better!
You mentioned that you were going to look for some braid for future tests. I’d like to suggest getting multicolor braid that changes colors every 10 meters , makes it easy to estimate length and of the cast as well as helps filling the spool - no need to use this awkward line meter. JBraid makes it ( one of the best on the market ) , Solokin too and some others are available .BTW , 1meter is close to 1 yard LOL. Cheers.
I'm glad i pull the trigger on the 2024 calcutta se instead. Was thinking about metanium dc but it's just too finicky if its just like the scorpion dc i have.
Mr Reel Test: the DC shimano reels do best with 10 lb fluro and 15-20lb braid. Mono sucks on DC. I have the SLX DC with SUNLINE fluoro 10lb FC Sniper. AND i cast like you in this video -- 30 to 40 yards.
I can send me out there with a full overhead cast without thumbing and get zero back lash.. What you shout have done is read your manual. That spool tensioner knob is KEY to everything, especially changing lures..
I got 2 of this throwing traps and ripbaits on 30lb braids at a solid distance with no backlash or any problems. Set your reel right and feather the spool!
It’s a 500.00 dollar reel!… in my humbled opinion, I don’t think I should have to FEATHER the spool at this cost!..feathering of a SLX is not required..and it’s not required for a host of other reels at half the cost
For silent tune shimano I work the spool tension slow fall the lure and work the brakes Dow , after I setup the brakes I started loosing the spool tansion !

I don’t know the reason but all solid core reels I have is hard to take the spool off and all the time I take the side plate off I have to reset the spool tansion ! That’s my experience with my reel’s and for what I seen here most are doing the same!!
I love mine but really hadn’t had a crazy windy day and im throwing 12# Sunline Shooter on my P5 Megabass Madbull 7’ MH regular action. Mainly for squrebill and my 110s
I always had problems with mono/fluoro on DC reels, that's why I switched to braid (x8 0,16mm) and never looked back..more control, more sensitivity, longer casts.. I can throw fluo/mono on DC, but by the time I set the reel to handle it the distance is gone, not worth the hassle. I am a full shimano guy, but since I bought the tatula sv, my world has changed, it's the reel I fish most, 9 times out of 10 and she is my go to for lighter stuff (1/8 and up). Should of tighten the spool tension a bit more maybe?
Here in South Africa this reel is nearly 1000 dollars. Stunning reel but too expensive. Stunning video as always. I also like a fairly loose spool on my reels as you can thumb the spool as you did here and not loose distance with a spool that is too tight.
maybe with the mgl spool it prefers a little extra spool tension? I want one for christmas this year, not sure whats out there that will give similar casting distance but also be really smooth. I tried the curado dc 200 and liked it but its massive and heavy.
I have an older Antares. Couldn’t find the spool tension knob and I set the mode to “X” because Every thing was in another language. With 20Lb PowerPro Superslick, my first cast I hit another fisherman across the bank. 😂. Never fished there again. He’s still looking for me 😅.
Yeah it sucks…. It seems like you gotta tighten the spool to a slow fall like any old school caster. Its not a daiwa- best brakes in business on daiwas. Daiwas you can allow the spool to be a fast drop and the powerful brakes with 20 settings will control any over run and you can still have a mostly free spool, cast into the wind, etc. I hated the dc’s, when i was looking to find new reels a couple years back, i thought the dc would be the jam, but ended up selling it after using the sv tw daiwas.
1st mistake and I'm surprised given your testing experience but on DC reels you don't want ANY side to side play/movement in the spool - Also, mentioning you want to find some cheap 20 lb braid off ebay for cast battles with a $500 reel just lost me.....yikes!
This is definitely, definitely living up to the crazy standard set by the 20 metanium. That’s one of my favorite reels but it’s *not* for beginners. Once you get used to it, it’s a rocket…but in the beginning, it’s so free-wheeling that it can catch you off guard. The beginning of this video reminds me of my first few minutes on the water with the 20 metanium. To be honest, this is what I want from shimano. I would so much rather them push the boundaries and give me a reel that I have to learn…but then it rewards you with effortless distance and ultimate accuracy once you tame the beast.
