I remember when the only reason anyone knew the apron rules was because Nim came on Malone's twitch stream one time and explained it in the chat. How far we have come.
Matt: "Is this ok?" Nim: "Yes." Matt: "Is this ok?" Nim: "Well, sort of." Matt: "Is this ok?" Nim: "This ones complicated." That was 100% if my apron knowledge for the longest time.
Thanks for making a video. I had to tell tons of people that this is legal, even showing a pic of iRacing support saying so. I still DO NOT understand why iRacing loading screen does not have generally "blocking" rule & track specific stuff (like this) & i.e. multiclass reminders like slower class stay on the racing line written, so people actually are reminded on how to drive! It would for sure significantly increase driving standards!
lol My first thought was how many times you must have heard you can’t use the apron to make a video on it…. Please more iRacing tutorial and race craft videos.. Cheers from NC.
I was just racing Jack Doohan and he took the apron at the start to go from P7 to P1 by turn 1. I guess that part was legal, but the illegal part was that when he merged back on, he bumped the side of the dude behind me who then went into the wall, then he bumped me on the side before almost hitting the T1 cones, almost causing me to wreck… Good to know I can use the apron from now on though, especially if I get a good run out of the bus!
This video should be played on the load screen of every race for Daytona... Haha! Thanks for the info, I was thinking about the same thing, but wasn't 100% sure. And of course, the most important part about it is that you cannot force your way back on track. That is pretty much what the guys using the apron does not seem to understand.
2:48 That's the main problem. It's NOT super clear.... the only SUPER CLEAR boundary is the yellow and black line dividing the oval and the apron. Even then, okay, the cones mark where you can race and where you can't, fineee... so how come in the Charlotte Roval it's a white line that indicates the end of the raceable apron? It's not even consistent.
I wonder how many people who comment saying you can't use the apron in the tri-oval watch more oval races at Daytona - where using the apron is not allowed ANYWHERE on the track.
I was just protested and suspended for this. I don’t get it. Someone pushed me to the apron. Not on purpose, but I went left to avoid it. And I stayed there crossing the start finish passing two cars. I was on the yellow line with my right side tires. And in 2000 races, I’ve never once done this. And now I’m suspended. I can share any info with anyone. As I can’t believe Iracing did this. Chris prout saw it. I went to avoid a nasty collisions and just stayed there. As I was thought it was legal. I am so bummed right now. As I am agressive and make mistakes, but I never ever want or need to win in an unfair way. I just did what was best to avoid a nasty crash and what others were doing in each and every race :( So, I don’t think it’s legal. Or not legal for each member. Just be careful
Yes, you can use the apron, but because it's technically not part of the racing surface, it's your job to rejoin safely. You can't use the apron to muscle your way through. When down there, the person you're trying to pass does NOT have to move to make room for you. The only reason they opened it up on the front and back stretch is for wreck avoidance. The double yellow line tells you that it's illegal to pass. Single yellow line means legal passing zone, but the same rules for rejoining apply. Corners are always illegal so that's why they don't need to put a double yellow line there.
The double yellow line rules is only in affect for Oval races. Not road races. If you're familiar with the iRacing staff Nim Cross. He has covered this topic multiple times in Malones stream. You can in fact use the apron as you see fit in the designated areas. Its just your responsibility to safely merge back up on track while attempting to overtake on it.

That's a really good suggestion and easy to implement I would think. Is there an official way to suggest things to the devs?

Cheers for the PSA - very helpful, had no idea about the cones and what they signified

My first thought was, I need to be able to send this to people while on track. This debate came up tonight in a 24 hour prep session.
but you can't pass on the outside unless you have special tires
And knowing this, I WILL drive all the way to the wall. Because I want to!!!!
Bloody good PSA. I had *no* idea about the cones rule(s)

the lines are IRL differences. The cones are in place for slowdowns. simple as that
That should color code the cones green for ok areas, red for no go
Wait so you can overtake there now?
The first thing that came to mind was what an amazing mustache

simply lovely
Are you technically still not meant to pass there though as it would count as passing off track?

Tri-oval apron: good
Oval apron: bad
Ok great
So why was that Williams Esports team bashed for doing that same thing in Qualy a few seasons ago?
They used the apron where it is not allowed
I'm even more confused after watching this. Can i use the apron or not?
Well yes! But sometimes no!
No yes
In the NASCAR turns no, in all other instances yes.
The apron is fair game except where it isn't.

Dempsey saying "sorry"
I thought i had to wear an apron to play iracing😎
what is racecraft?
Well hot dog!
Seen nothing wrong with using the Apron by Mx5. BMW was toast by cutting and illegally using the Apron in the way he did.
Not enough temple run footage 2/10 turned off after 20 seconds.
Cheater *kappa* 😂
