A Singer of Spring: The American Goldfinch

- A video of the vibrant and cute lil' american goldfinches that flock to my birdfeeders on a yearly basis. A goldfinch's daily schedule around here basically looks like this: wake up, bombard the infinite stash of birdseed, visit the birdbath, sing my heart out in the trees, repeat until dark. In case you are wondering on the different look of my birdfeeders, the only ones I use are home-made and built to be jay proof, weather-proof, and, in one weight activated case, squirrel proof. As a result, they do not look the prettiest, but are very effective--the finches and sparrows sure love them! If you so wish, you can watch a video I made a little while back on how to make a simple version of my bird feeders at • How to Make a Bird Feeder .
One of these landed in my car’s windshield and stared at me last year, and I took up bird-watching as a result. I have a bird guide filled with many checkmarks now.
It’s the best thing I have ever done.
I am a novice bird watcher. These birds sparked my interest earlier this year. I saw about 31 or more at my bird feeders this morning in Franklinton, NC.
I just noticed one for the first time ever in my yard this week May2019, not on side where feeders r but on opposite side of home, i plan to put a feed there with sunflower seeds in it, and maybe a water bowl close by, im in Raeford north Carolina near Fort Brag nc
This is a beautifull video of our American Goldfinchs, thank you for sharing.
Very nice birds to watch.
I live in the mountains of Virginia and have a ton of these outside. I have 2 inside with me. I love the goldfinch. Also have alot of bluebird's around.
Interesting feeders to keep the bigger birds out.
Very Clever feeders! I love these little Goldfinches (our State bird)...I live in an apartment and not allow to have bird feeders because of the mess....I buy hulled sunflower seeds and slightly crush them with food processer...the Grossbeak & Goldfinches are always here, I simply love them! Thank you for sharing!
Wow look at those DIY feeders, made specially for small song birds.... really good!
Absolutely LOVE this video!!! Never seen so many beautiful Goldfinches at once in my life!! We get a few in our Colorado yard each spring/summer, and feel fortunate to have them visit. Every May I have been drawing more and more Bullocks Orioles and Western Tanagers, though, along with several Black Headed Grosbeaks and Lazuli Buntings. Can't get enough of the brilliant colored feathered friends!! Thanks for your video!
And I was thrilled to see a couple of these at my feeder, LOL! You have so many every day ~ Wow! I love the way you've made feeders that are perfect for these adorable little finches, more videos of them please!
Awww! I love those little yellow birdies!
Wow, someone took a great deal of time and attention making those great one-of-a-kind feeders for small birds!! Nifty!
I LOVE YOUR BIRDFEEDERS and as you said the birds love them too! I've never seen so many of these beautiful birds at one time. At the most there's been maybe five at a time at my store bought feeders. Hey, I'm jealous!!! LOL!
I had 20 in my yard after it rained how beautiful...love birds
Love your video! I have a pair I have been watching build a nest and taking pictures of here in Mississippi. They just started. Beautiful to watch.
Love your feeders!
I have seen a few of these in my yard among the sparrows, doves, blue jays, red cardinals, wood peckers, fly catchers, mockingbirds, wrens and grackles. Oh one lonely painted bunting once for a treat.
What a beautiful finch ~ never seen these finches as I am in Australia ~ they remind me of my canaries mixed with a Green singer
wow this looks so amazing, very beautiful birds. and so lovely
Beautiful coloration...
Cool vid, great fades, camera angles and song capture, and great bird choice! :) Thanks for posting it.
this is a good video. i wish i had this many birds (of any kind) coming to my feeders!
I find it strange that anyone would "dislike" this stuff... :P
I know. People are ridiculous.
People Under Influence. By the way, good remark. Thanks!
my God that was awesome! wish you could show how you make some of those bird feeders like one with the trash can lid. I believe that would help a lot of my birds stop getting killed by the hawk!
Beautiful birds.
my grandmother loves watching them outside her window
Beautiful little guys .... I have about 20 at my feeder right now , but , in their winter color.
such beauty, tks for sharing
The goldfinches who visit my feeder only get this busy when they’re molting... even then, you still have a much BIGGER turnout then I ever have in the two years that I’ve been bird feeding.
I have one little guy. He's so cute. I want more! He's super shy, but loves our sunflowers?
The male goldfinch is highly attractive. I see goldfinches every day in the backyard at this time of year. They love to eat sunflower seeds.
Wonderful, beautiful Bird!!!!!!!
Too cute for me.
these yellow finches are all over my yard!
Nice video!
Beautifull!!!
So many Goldfinches! You did a great job! What kind of seed do you have in your feeders? We have nyjer in our yard but no one is coming to it yet.
Nice Video
nice song thanks
Awesome video! Be thankful you don't have raccoons. They would wreak havoc with your homemade feeders. Thanks for sharing!
creatorwise Actually, I used to have a raccoon problem. Now, however, after wrapping sheet metal around the base of the tree and trimming a few branches, my feeders are safe as they can no longer get on the tree at all.
I love Gold finch song
I saw that birds here in my place , BULACAN, PHILIPPINES, but the sounds i heard is like.pikatsu, thought it was name the picachu becoz of the cloors 🤔
Incredible. They really look, sing and behave more like canaries than European goldfinches!
Muy.bello.
I want this birds where is it available same this yellow and black combination pls tell me
Muito lindo
American gold finches will not share my feeder at the same time with other finches except for their mates. On all the online footage I see, the finches all gather at the finch feeders together with no issues. Why are all my finches fighting at my feeder when there are plenty of food and perches for all? Can anyone help out on this?
I hear lots of house sparrows on this track.
Thankfully I have never seen a house sparrow here, so I doubt that's what it is. Lots of gold, purple, and house finches, and maybe some white or golden crowned sparrows, but no house sparrows I'm sure.

Thanks for drawing attention to "Baldy". Is his missing toupee something that is often seen in goldfinches in your area? I've never seen such a goldfinch before.
babyfacejudy Baldy is maybe one of two goldfinches I've seen completely without a black cap, but it is not uncommon that the cap is smaller than usual or a pattern (one had it in the shape of a lightning bolt) instead.
Hey, it's Baldy!
como puedo comprar uno
What seed were you feeding them? I feed nyjer seed and get a nice amount but you get a lot more than me.
Sorry I took such a long time to reply, I haven't signed into youtube for a while. The only seed I have ever fed my birds is black-oil sunflower seed. I don't know why it works so well for goldfinches, seeing as it is recommended to feed them nyjer. I actually performed a little experiment with the two types of seeds, and the sunflowers outperformed the other a hundred to one. Be careful though...I was going through 40 pound bags of birdseed in about a week at that time, and it was getting expensive. I have since put them on a "diet" and it now takes 3 weeks to finish a bag of seed with a moderate amount of birds. It was fun while it lasted, but it was a bit of a strain on the wallet.
3hockeybros Wow, that's crazy.. I'll have to go get some sunflower seeds.
Danny Caramia Just be sure that it is black-oil sunflower seeds--not sunflower or striped sunflower--as a goldfinch's beak is not robust enough to break the shell of those other types.
Okay, thanks for that information.
Which state is this? Great video!
Actually, this is on a peninsula on the southwest of an island in the very bottom left corner of British Columbia. Basically, as far southwest as you can go in Canada.
Thank you to you, and everyone else who has given positive feedback to this video, I did not expect it to be so popular--I guess people love alot of goldfinches.
Very good . But nothing beets the goldfinch song
what kind of bird feeder is that?
+Jorden Hiale All the feeders I have are homemade out of bottles and wire. The ones in this video are just a few of the designs that I am always trying to improve.
3hockeybros also known as a squirrel proof feeder.
Hello Hockey-Bros..you may not remember me (my family stayed at your suite last August when we went to your location for a family member's wedding) but I still keep up with your latest photography pursuits. You are very talented in this area as well as video...keep up the good work. I have some photos of Tofino that I want to send to your family - let me know what email works as the others did not (the emails came back)...BLESSINGS in CHRIST...Victoria R.

...and here I thought I had a lot of finches...
Super 👌 👍! Заходите в гости!
Oi eu
To protect birds and other small animals from your cats, only let them out after everyone else has gone to bed.
So your the one who has stolen all the yellow finches!
7 years ago anyway :) I've cut down since then, since the amount of seed devoured at their peak was not affordable--well over 100lbs a month!
