Love love love! I am trying to make something with chicken wire to not let house finch in (cuz they scream at the sight of food), but let lesser goldfinch and pine siskins eat.

Hi there, how are you? Hope fantastic. I watched your video showing a few different birdfeeders and want to know how you made the one with the trash can lid. please share. Hope we get as many birds feeding as you have. Oh, what type of birdseed do you use? Thanks for your awesome skills!

+Kathleen Hunnicutt The feeder with the trash can lid isn't anything special. Its just a stout hopper style feeder with a cylindrical wire mesh cage around it to keep large birds out, and the old bear-damaged lid is a quick and effective rain cover. I have found that the best way to attract lots of birds is to simply have plenty of feeders, and NEVER let them run out seed (which is black-oil sunflower, by the way). Be aware that a lot of birds consume pounds of seed a day; at my peak, before I toned it down, I was going through 35 pounds in a week (expensive)! Thanks for the kind words.

+Jeannie Hill Ha! Never thought of that. But, to put your mind at ease, its not really possible, since the bird would have to somehow stick its head in before it landed on the perch, and have enough weight behind it to lift the counterweight (much more than a finch) and to shove a dull piece of plastic through its neck. Regardless, it has never happened, and I've used feeders like that for years now. Comment gave me a (somewhat grim) chuckle though.
