Hey Paul! I'm a big fan and was your opponent who had the weird cloudfin raptor gates brew. It was weird for sure but the deck was actually just blue black with Bident of thassa. Then late in the draft I randomly got back to back gate colossus and just jammed it together with 8 gates. I splashed white for skyknight and azorius charm and archway angel. The deck was cool and ended up 5-3. I think there's a lot of room for creativity in this format and Theros is when I started playing so this set is so nostalgic. I'll probably be the last one to just keep playing this format. Thanks for the daily videos!
To be clear - you DID make it to day 2, you just unfortunately didn't make it beyond the first draft. No shame in that at all. You did better than 99% of players
20:47 Hey Paul, love the content. Was just wondering why in game 1 here you went for witch's mark on crusader into open mana vs Mogis's Warhound on Sliderunner (or any other target). Seems like fizzling the Mark was one of their outs in that spot, versus adding more pressure that they couldn't really two for one with a removal spell. Alternatively, Warhound on the Crusader to go wider makes sense too.
This brings memories. My first ever deck was mono red heroic, and this draft has so many of the cards! Akroan crusader, dragon mantle, coordinated assault…. 😃
Thanks for this really fun video! Never seen anyone going mono red in PIO before. Btw, talking about fun, have you seen that we are going to have Duskmourn Arena Direct in a couple weeks? And Duskmourn Premier Draft will come back next week as well for us to train before the event! Playing my favorite limited set for rl prizes will be awesome! And I hope you get a pile of boxes as well, Paul!
46:30 Any consideration here for pumping the Crusader once and then casting fall of the hammer? I guess its pretty bad if they interact, but since the Mogis' Warhound Bestow snap resolved it didn't seem like they were holding anything.
I was also hoping today would be a day two draft two video... not sure if it's just me but I keep rethinking each decision I made in the open. Open losses sting so much.
It didnt matter but in the last match you could Wild slash the token to prevent Pro red on the master of wave block to get that thing off the board. Won anyway but in a closer game could very well matter :)
Game one looked like you were out of your comfort zone, super aggressive deck not your style, but you adjusted and had a blast with the mono-red deck! 👍
Yeah still learning how to play these hyper aggressive decks. My brain just assumes you should always be attacking but there's definitely some nuance and I haven't figured out the perfect lines for sure. Things got a lot easier when it was mono-red smashy smash!
Reminds me of the deck i 7-0ed with today 4x akroan crusadwr x4 witchws mark ×4 rimrock x2 wild slash x2 fall of the hammer x2 ordeal. Think i ran like 14-15 lands lol. First time red was so open for me. Was wild
Not that it mattered since you had 100 playables (a scenario I find happens actually kind of often in this format if you're in the right colors), but I think we saw here why Phalanx Leader's winrate is actually kinda low. The good decks for it end up so heavy red because red has basically all the spells for heroic between Mark, Mantle, Rimrock, and Fall of the Hammer.
Anout that open draft if you have a situation where all good drafters are staying open and picking the best cards then there are no signals... Tough draft.
this is what happens to draft pods when 90% of the world's best limited players are busy playing the arena open. the packs and cards you were shipped all draft were fucking BONKERS. 😂 well, small victories. you'll be back to cashing next month, brother. 🙌
You're undervaluing dragon mantle. 1 red, target your heroic. Cycle. So good
i see!

Haha, beating the Master of Waves with the mono red deck for the 7th win was chef's kiss right there. So good.
What a beating! Going mono-red is the way to go. I still can’t believe how open red was. Great vid. Thnx for keeping uploading PIO content.
Thanks for the vid Paul! FYI the ferocious text on wild slash was relevant in that final game 😉
Oh you are so right! Thanks for pointing that out

Crazy good deck, great call to switch!
I think so too!

You are absolutely correct. Misplays on my part
This was my favorite pio draft I've seen
glad you enjoyed!

yeah it felt like it was constructed!
Wow what an insane draft, usually i don't watch PIO drafts but this one was worth it
Yeah I hate that this is one of the best things to be doing in the format but if you can't beat em...
Thanks for this really fun video! Never seen anyone going mono red in PIO before.

Definitely checking that out!

Er, I mean, gratz on the trophy, good pivot.
🎉

19:14 how was he able to bestow warhound with 2 mana?
The 1W 2/2 reduce the cost
@@lcrperfecttotally forgot that card had more text. Thanks!

A shame that red wasn't this open in the draft yesterday :( but i guess thats what happens when you draft with the best
yeah i think that was the HARDEST pack 1 I've ever had in Pioneer Masters. Really tough packs to get any sense for where I needed to be.
Pack 2 pick 6 into the video and it looks like a 7 win trophy deck already

yeah i generally highly prefer a heavy red mana base anyways for these types of decks.
I probably would have left the hero back on the first attack on the deathtouch bugs.
Good callout!

1.7 average CMC is absurd I’ve never seen it that low before.
oh yes!

If a four mana creature is too much of an investment, you might be a red deck
haha true
Is this Standard constructed or Pioneer?
😉
Oh, Pioneer block constructed.
falling hammer on heroic creature is disgusting
16:30 fewer
You punted that first game! Control players should NOT play aggro! 😂😂😂
damn
playing a constructed deck in limited...that's illegal /s
