What killed foils was switching from a more bespoke foiling style to the foil-everything-and-be-done-with-it process. Foiling an entire card face is what makes modern cards so sensitive to curling. It also washes out details, which makes each card feel less unique. But it's almost certainly a faster/cheaper manufacturing process, so..
Yea, the bending isn't really the issue - I have old like, Shadowmoor era foils that bend, too. It's been an issue for a while. Of course, it's much MORE of an issue with some sets than others, but I agree - generally speaking the more generic, ubiquitous foiling technique they use on most sets is lackluster. However, I really like the foiling technique used in sets like this collector booster. I believe a good handful of collector boosters used this - you can see the difference in foiling between, for example, Dominaria Remastered Draft Box foils and Collector Booster foils. Collector Booster foils have this more subtle, matte foil process that I think looks really clean and it doesn't curl at all. That's not the case for ALL collector booster foils, but that seems to be the case for this one at least. But I have to agree, some of the best foils I have are the ones from the earliest days of foils. And I don't think that's just nostalgia - I think there is a qualitative difference. Hell, I even like the foils up to like, Amonkhet more than the average Play Booster foil we have now.
the best experience would be get rid of collector and put all the good rare find in the usual play boosters, that would give a really huge boost to the meaning of cracking packs
The rare finds are only "good" because of how expensive collector boosters are. They're mostly just incredibly gaudy and hold no value. Let people pay for bad versions of cards if that's what they want.
@@Dotesmite pokemon or one piece would disagree. those games has only one kind of boosters and there are many valuable cards in there (even better than many magic serialized). It's not the price of the booster that makes the value of a card, but how many people wants it and how rare it is. take a serialized for ex. if you have 500 of those coming from collector of play booster the value would be the same since the number is literally the same.
@@Magimax5 The price of every card in any given set can never exceed the price of every opened booster pack in that set. The value of every magic card is rarity + playability, cards in collector boosters aren't any more playable they're just more rare and the boosters are more expensive. With games like one piece and pokemon the value of any given card also includes collectors who want to own the card because they like the characters. There's no equivalent of this in magic. So while higher rarity art treatments have intrinsic value in those games, in magic they're often worse than the basic card for people who actually want to play them in games. They already tried this out with expeditions, inventions, and the list. And the general outcome was that the cards that had special art treatments and weren't playable ended up costing basically nothing. With collector boosters, even cards with no playability can hold value because they're rare and the booster pack prices are high.

Thanks for the oening, always fun to see new mtg product from time to time. I prefer non-foil with the original art and no special frame or other treatment. It's the cleanest design, but to each their own ofc.
Each time Wrenn planeswalkes she binds to a new tree on that plane. She doesn't like naming them so they're just Six or Seven. Seven was the tree she bound to in Innistrad. Six was from the plane she was on before she planeswalked there, so W&6 would not be an Innistrad card.
I was at my shop yesterday and we were digging through old bulk we had just picked up. Only dropped $20 on it, there ended up being a Lion's Eye Diamond inside. It was heavily played, and the only card worth any real money, but it was mindboggling to actually find something like that.
@@MTGGoldfishUnboxings Yeah for sure. It was a nice little shot in the arm. 7% in MKM? It's not just the Fedoras! Creatures that have a leatherbound hat (not all are specifically Fedoras): Undercover Crocodelf; Granite Witness; Faerie Snoop; Ezrim, Agency Chief; Sharp-Eyed Rookie (both versions); Rubblebelt Maverick; Sample Collector; Hedge Whisperer; Loxodon Eavesdropper; Homicide Investigator (both versions); Persuasive Interrogators (alt version); Reckless Detective; Unscrupulous Agent; Steamcore Scholar; Basilica Stalker; Crimestopper Sprite; Tenth District Hero; Projektor Inspector (back right); and Agency Outfitter (detective cap). That's 19 / 142, or 13.38%. Then there's Vein Ripper with a leather hat only on the shadow portrayed (left). Then there are also 11 creatures with a magnifying glass but no hat: Wojek Investigator (all versions); Cold Case Cracker; Forensic Gadgeteer; Forensic Researcher; Hotshot Investigators; Evidence Examiner; Curious Cadaver; Private Eye; Kellan, Jaded Analyst; Inquisitive Prodigy (both versions); and Surveillance Monitor. This doesn't include cards using magnification for artificing not invesatigating, like Kylox, Visionary Inventor and Agency Coroner. We're up to 31 / 142, or 21.83%. However, over a third of the creatures weren't humanoid and thus wouldn't wear a hat. So that means it's actually closer to 32.98% of all ?hattable? ones. There are also 12 noncreature spells that have leatherbound hats: Thinking Cap; Case of the Pilfered Proof; Eliminate the Impossible; Case of the Gateway Express; Cerebral Confiscation; Undergrowth Recon; Connecting the Dots; Chalk Outline; Out Cold; Galvanize; Break Out (bowler hat); and Long Goodbye (on the left shadow), and at least 5 more with only magnifying glasses, e.g. No Witnesses (camera and a magnifying glass), and all this doesn't include any of the other out-of-place or modernized cards, like Candlestick or Wrench.
He said it was foil(personally it doesn't look like it from the video). Foil Retro Meathook Massacre is $65 on Card Kingdom. They charge a few bucks more for just about everything compared to TCGPlayer, but it's his sponsor so he obviously wont go off their competitors pricing. That being said, even on TCG Player the foil retro is going for $60-64.
I believe the foil old border is around $65 (it's hard to get an exact price at the moment during presales) and the non-foil old border is more like $30-$35.
I personally like the increase of foils! I don’t play foils or full arts because it’s expensive, I play them when I think they look better than the original art of the card. Now that they’re more available than they used to be I get to use so many beautiful looking cards! it also makes old foils special to me
as a newer player things like the mass hysteria reprint not being from innistrad and stuff are things i would have never noticed if not pointed out since i never played around the OG innistrad
Yeah, I wasn't sure how to price that one. Card Kingdom has them listed at $100, but with none in stock. TCG has a bunch listen for $240 and I think one sold for around that price. In general I try to choose the more conservative price for the video and I'm really not sure where the price ends up on this one. It's hard for me to imagine it being much less than $100 though, considering normal Edgars are around $70.
I actually love the fact that collector boosters killed the value of foils. I don't care if my cards feel valuable when I open packs, I just want to make my decks shiny.
It wasn't cowboy theme OTJ Seth. It was a Cathar. All Innistrad has Cathars, see their clothes and you will notice the hat, like Champion of the Parish/the perished.
It's right on the border. Currently the cheapest version is around $5, but if we knock a bit off assuming prices will drop, it's probably somewhere around $2-$3. In general I err on the side of caution with prices, I'd rather have them be too low than too high, so I decided not to include it.
I've actually been looking into some pre-8th Edition foils because I've fallen off of tradional foils that we have now. Retro Border foiling will always be my favorite but I miss when only some parts of the art were foil. Could really make cards pop.
Alayna Danner's Jeweled Lotus is probably one of the more iconic pieces in the recent decade or so. Dunno what else, i'd want to say MH2 normal Ragavan by Simon Dominic (although i love Magali's version from MOM more) or Liliana's Japanese alternate art from War of the Sparks by the most iconic Final Fantasy (1-6) artist Yoshitaka Amano.
You dont spend this kind if money in cards if its completely disposable. I have 4 collector boxes and 2 play boxes ordered. Doesn't stop me from anything else I have to do

He’s a big reseller. Nice seeming guy, but his level of enfranchisement makes him VERY out of touch with the perspectives of a ton of players. Guys like Seth and Josh Lee Kwei live in an entirely different MtG hobby from the rest of us, and I say that as someone who’s been collecting since July of ‘96. He once wrote an essay advocating for WotC putting QR codes on MtG cards to prevent counterfeiting, without even the barest mention of the additional cost that would inflict on customers. Not to be deceptive about the issue. I honestly believe it either didn’t occur to him that adding QR codes would jack up pack prices, or if it did, that that wouldn’t be any significant problem for the majority of players.

8:49 “I want the 1 of 1” there is no 1 of 1 in this set..? I’m so confused lol. There’s only a X/500
Yeah, I meant 1 of 500.
"original Zendikar like 20 years ago" Why you gotta do that to me seth?
I know, it feels like yesterday (and I checked, it's actually like 15 years, so we aren't *that* old).
Thanks for the oening, always fun to see new mtg product from time to time. I prefer non-foil with the original art and no special frame or other treatment. It's the cleanest design, but to each their own ofc.
That's what you get for forgetting Liesa, now you'll never forget her again.
Liesa doesn't want to be forgotten anymore i swear
Each time Wrenn planeswalkes she binds to a new tree on that plane. She doesn't like naming them so they're just Six or Seven.
Seven was the tree she bound to in Innistrad. Six was from the plane she was on before she planeswalked there, so W&6 would not be an Innistrad card.
That last flip had me cackling, that was priceless
I guessed Thalia and was surprised to see it was actually worse. Impressive work, WotC
I was at my shop yesterday and we were digging through old bulk we had just picked up. Only dropped $20 on it, there ended up being a Lion's Eye Diamond inside. It was heavily played, and the only card worth any real money, but it was mindboggling to actually find something like that.
That's awesome! Nice find!
@@MTGGoldfishUnboxings Yeah for sure. It was a nice little shot in the arm. We're a newer shop, have only been open for a little over a year now, and business has been good, but the horrible weather as of late has slowed things down.
Also congrats on your own pulls. Going that positive on collector boosters without even hitting any serialized cards is kind of wild.
As for foils, nothing is special if everyone has it. It’s it’s not a full alt art foil, it doesn’t matter
Ok, and? There are things called preferences.
@ watch the video and you’ll know that this guy is asked peoples opinion on exactly this question. Stop yucking the yum.
Is there any chance if I paid shipping you might consider sending me the bulk non-rares or value cards from the set? I had over 15,000 cards stolen from my house this year and I don’t have any part of my collection left and I am deviated after 20 years of collecting
Take the shipping money and start your new collection if mtg means so much to you? Don't rely on content creators scraps. You'll be waiting the rest of your life with nothing. Mtg giveaways are slim to none. I've never seen funny voice olive give anything to anyone. 😂
7% in MKM? It's not just the Fedoras!
Creatures that have a leatherbound hat (not all are specifically Fedoras): Undercover Crocodelf; Granite Witness; Faerie Snoop; Ezrim, Agency Chief; Sharp-Eyed Rookie (both versions); Rubblebelt Maverick; Sample Collector; Hedge Whisperer; Loxodon Eavesdropper; Homicide Investigator (both versions); Persuasive Interrogators (alt version);
Reckless Detective; Unscrupulous Agent; Steamcore Scholar; Basilica Stalker; Crimestopper Sprite; Tenth District Hero; Projektor Inspector (back right); and Agency Outfitter (detective cap).
Great video, brother! Pretty sure u opened more legit mythics than laboratory Maniacs
tcg player has the retro frame meathook massacre at 34 dollars. its so weird to see people just make up prices.
Yeah, I went to check as well bc why would the price be up that high regardless of the old border. Especially with how many may be pulled now
He said it was foil(personally it doesn't look like it from the video).
Ah yes, Sigarda's very unique effect thats also on Tajuru Preserver, a 2 mana Elf from Rise of the Eldrazi
I remember when they first started printing foils, with Urza's legacy (or was it saga?). They were rare and it was fun to pull one.
I couldn't help myself. That last card had me cracking the fuck up lol
if they unban griselbrand, how much will cost the poster version?
The Urza Saga box makes me nostalgic and sad every time ❤
Those foil Edgar showcases are currently going for $240, you priced them in at the non-foil price of $100. Nice pulls!
"You're tearing me apart, Liesa!"
Make sure you get Richard to write that phone off as a work expense 😊😅
That retro frame foil meatball is slick!!
Given the indicated prices, all my booster displays were worth more than a thousand bucks initially...
I actually love the fact that collector boosters killed the value of foils. I don't care if my cards feel valuable when I open packs, I just want to make my decks shiny.
Literally clicking "Like" just because of how hard I'm laughing at Liesa trolling the final drop of the last box, OMG!!
As someone getting one of these boxes, this just unreasonably raised my hopes. Can't wait to hit none of the chase mythics/movie posters lmao.
27:47 running so good just casually flips past the Maniac!
We don't need them $5 uncommons when we open a Meathook Massacre every other pack ;)
The decreasing value of these packs reflects the value of the cards opened over time.
Liesa's tirelessly tracking you lol
The Ragavan art on the dart board. Lol.
Yeah, I hate that stupid monkey.
It wasn't cowboy theme OTJ Seth. It was a Cathar. All Innistrad has Cathars, see their clothes and you will notice the hat, like Champion of the Parish/the perished.
36:16 chandra’s art is probably very iconic
Do you archery?
25:07 is deadeye not worth 3 dollers?
It's right on the border. Currently the cheapest version is around $5, but if we knock a bit off assuming prices will drop, it's probably somewhere around $2-$3. In general I err on the side of caution with prices, I'd rather have them be too low than too high, so I decided not to include it.
I've actually been looking into some pre-8th Edition foils because I've fallen off of tradional foils that we have now.
Retro Border foiling will always be my favorite but I miss when only some parts of the art were foil. Could really make cards pop.
That last liesa felt like a rickroll
8:54
Is number 93 because of your brother? I saw you on ACCN with your mom watching him play. Huge Louisville basketball fan
Ha, yeah. I'm surprised anyone got that reference.
I'm just here to see Bear
Every collector box I have opened has always had one or two cards that I open constantly. There is something very wrong with the algorithm
Congrats on those pulls, insane 🎉
I love foils and I would bling my whole collection. Please keep printing foils to bring the price down!
So we agree Seth has to build a Lisa commander deck, right?
After this opening I'm going to have to build several Lisa commander decks to make use of all the copies I have no lol
1 - Liliana Of The Veil
2 - Dark Confidant
3 - Tarmogoyf
4 - Snapcaster Mage
5 - Remand
6 - Karn Liberated
7 - Arcbound Ravager
Find the inner strahd
Emrakul/Meathook pack❌
Spaghetti and Meatballs✅
Alayna Danner's Jeweled Lotus is probably one of the more iconic pieces in the recent decade or so. Dunno what else, i'd want to say MH2 normal Ragavan by Simon Dominic (although i love Magali's version from MOM more) or Liliana's Japanese alternate art from War of the Sparks by the most iconic Final Fantasy (1-6) artist Yoshitaka Amano.
For the price of this cardboard you literally could have gone on a nice vacation
You dont spend this kind if money in cards if its completely disposable. I have 4 collector boxes and 2 play boxes ordered. Doesn't stop me from anything else I have to do
Do you keep all of the cards? Or do you actually sell them?
A mix. I usually keep some stuff I need for Commander Clash and then sell the rest to help fund the next opening video.
I just pre-ordered a box. I already know that it's gonna look exactly like your box 5, minus the Edgar and meat hook. I'm predicting a $200 box max. I never get lucky with these.
