1. The game everyone is asking about at 3:31 is Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (from the Luna Nights dev)
2. There are rumors that Nicalis cheated Pixel out of the rights to Cave Story but they've never been confirmed. If you want to play it safe you can stick with the freeware version at cavestory.org
3. James Stephanie Sterling apparently already did the "EEEEE OOOOHH" bit and I can't have any damn nice thing
There's negative evidence for Nicalis "stealing" Cave Story, but you shouldn't support them anyway because of this right here: kotaku.com/inside-the-ghosting-racism-and-exploitation-at-game-p-1838068522
Deedlit?! Oh snap, a new Record of Lodoss War game, after all these years?! I am so there.

Nerrel you ass, you teased Dusk in the last video but didn't talk about it.
@@Obscure_man31 Why? Because you don't like them?
I feel like Cave Story doesn't get enough credit for how influential it was. Like it was basically the game that kicked off the indie game movement, and popularized a lot of elements that are still common in indie games.
People remember it for just generally being great, but it was kind of a landmark game that signaled a massive shift in the industry. I don't think it would be unreasonable to mention it in the same breath as the likes of Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Doom, Street Fighter 2, and GTA3 in terms of its lasting impact.
Yeah
I'm kinda mad at how there's so many other versions of it that make all these changes and additions that shit up the aesthetic and feel of the original free version, it's definitely something that should be preserved
@@MAYOFORCE well, yeah, but they always give the option to play with the original game's feel, from ost changes to graphics changes
Everything looks too... NES... is a insanely big turn off.
That’s why Quote should be added to smash 👀
"by the magic of unemployment" is the best quote there is.
"Frankens are steined" is up there too
"We're all gonna die some day, and probably soon"
@@bojaidin On retrospect... Second best.
Well it was magical. For some people, it was the needed summer vacation. Like $1200 a week for free ($600 base unemployment+$600Covid bonus).
"$20 for game that can be completed in 5 hours is too much."
RE3 Remake: *sweating*
Yeah that comment seemed a bit weird to me. It's like people expect that get 1 hour of content per dollar they spend. Not every game as to consume you for hundreds of hours
Not to mention Metroid games specifically often incentivized replayability by encouraging you to finish them in under 3 hours for the "best" ending. Longer games aren't necessarily better games, given his opinions on Hollow Knight he of all people should know that.
I thought it was especially funny because Metroid games can be beaten in 5 hours. Fusion and Zero Mission are each 4-5 hours in a casual playthrough.
Shie The Gal except hollow knight can take up to 20 hours depending on how devoted you are to completing the gane 100%
while the gametime and price codependancy is oft overstated i feel there's some truth to it
i wouldn't drop 30 USD on a linear platformer game, and i love linear platforming
I can't believe I heard Nerrel say ''Touhou''
You have made my night, week and probably month.
he really should do more touhou games, including the amazingly done fan made games that look like they were made by professionals.
also, don't think i didn't notice that yuyuko profile pic :P
Touhou!
Yuyuko!
Cherry blossoms!
Would be interesting to see Nerrel on the mainline games but I feel Danmaku isn't his gib.
If Nerrel ever covers the main Touhou series, I hope he will branch out to other shmups too. But I don't really see either happening since he doesn't seem like a fan of bullet hell gameplay.
@@davidlewis6728 Which fangames would those be, out of curiosity? At this point I've only played Luna Nights.
@@WildMatsu Gensokyo Night Festival for instance (once finished)
I really like how you’re able to separate AM2R and Samus Returns, I think they’re both pretty different and it seems like a lot of people can’t seem to do that.
I think the DMCA did rub a lot of people the wrong way, and it's just natural that these two games are going to get compared.
Matthew Stevens Yeah, it still hurts me thinking about that, but the AM2R is still going strong and actually just recently released a new update, the next one (coming in like 2 1/2 years or longer) will apparently be a complete art overhaul. I think seeing stuff like that is what allows me to not hold any hard feelings
@@dailydoseofvitaminc6565 How is it still going strong though? I thought the copyright strike would have cancelled the game entirely.
FireNinja606 Nah, go on r/AM2R, the community is still working on the game and putting out updates. Nintendo only attacked AM2R because it caught the eye of the mainstream, since it doesn’t have it anymore Nintendo hasn’t even bothered to try and stop any of the newer updates.
And I disagree with this notion. Both games have the same exact proposition: to be a remake of Metroid 2. It's only natural to compare them directly. And obviously, the fan game is superior in every way, which only makes nintendo looks really bad... They don't give a damn about Metroid and it shows
I really hope Team Ladybug (Luna Nights devs) get a lot more recognition, they might have just 2 games currently, but both of them have been a blast in the genre, I really like their visual style and how smooth the controls feel. Really looking forward to Record of Lodoss War, hopefully they'll make it longer than the previous games.
The main guy, Kobon I believe, has made other metroidvanias like that SMT Jack Bros game and Pharaoh Rebirth +
they actually made a few licensed games for different anime series. IE: they made a megaman style game that was packaged with one of the konosuba blurays
There is also Action Mogura, their first game.
The same people behind Team Ladybug also made a game called Pharaoh Rebirth+ (on steam) before they were Team Ladybug, and you'll probably love it if you love their other games. They also made a Shin Megami Tensei metroidvania called Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue which is also quite good. That one isn't available by official means anymore, so google it and download the english version for free somewhere. Enjoy!
They've made a couple of games: Pharaoh Rebirth+, SMT Synchronicity Prologue, Konosuba The Resurrection of Beldia, Touhou Luna Nights, Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth and Fate/Stay Night: RUN! RUN! Lancer
SMT one is the best imo
Totally agree, they are capable of consistently doing awesome stuff and I'm looking forward to bigger projects from them.
In Bloodstained, you can avoid a lot of the ingredient grinding by selling it to Dominique. Selling will add it to her inventory permanently and you can buy as many as you need. Same with items, armor and weapons.
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Jesus how did I never know this. So much time wasted…
You should totally review Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
this
Can I like twice? I love Momodora IV so much
Yes! Momo IV is one of my favourite metroidvanias of all time!
That game is great
And Minoria, which is the successor game.
I loved Touhou Luna Nights. The short length was what caused me to try to speedrun the game.
I saw TouHou in the thumbnail and clicked unthinkingly, then got whiplash when I realized it was a Nerrel video
Wow and he gave it a glowing review, too. I am the very happy boy now
Not even 30 seconds in and you already have me hooked, Nerrel.

@@ImTakingYouToFlavorTown I've felt the same way since I first played it when it released. Hollow Knight is definitely a game I can appreciate, but it's not a game I will come to enjoy.

I'm sorry Nerrel; there are no unpopular opinions in this video, and this is not what I am subscribed for. Disliked and reported. Please try better next time.
I think that saying AM2R should not be compared to Samus Returns, and is not inherently better, is certainly unpopular.
Wait for Resident Evil 3 Remake review...I bet he's going to shit on Nemesis.
@@Screamingreader He did compare them though... and showed the differences between them that are enough to change how each game plays so it makes sense

Nerrel, seeing a video from you in my sub feed is like finding out I have an extended weekend: it makes my day. Seriously, I love your content man.
YES! I need Nerrel in my life right now
I'm addicted to Nerrel. It's become a debilitating problem.
Hey Nerrel! Really cool that you included AM2R in here but if I'm being totally honest you messed up a few of your facts.
The Galactic Federation logs were added by a non-official team after the DMCA, and in this video it sounds like you were blaming Doc for the somewhat cringy references. Doc hasn't done anything with AM2R since the DMCA so he shouldn't be faulted.
The Samus sprites, while *based* on Zero Mission, are not mere edits or just a modification; they was a lot done from scratch with some things like the running animation fine-tuned to match the feel of the original. Many tilesets were definitely modified from ZM and Fusion though, so perhaps that part was just poorly contextually structured.
Besides that great review, keep up the good work!
Also doesn't the metroids' AI have tweaks depending on difficulty like common enemies?
@@RedstoNeman0 Yes sir, they're more aggressive if I remember correctly.
I don't think he's blaming anyone, but... I dunno, critiquing the game? As a game reviewer does? Making shit personal is the complete opposite anyone should ever do when it comes to critiquing works of any kind
@@Jamie-tx7pn The point is that some details aren't part of the original vision for the game
@Sola If he's gonna critique the game he shouldn't critique parts that weren't part of the original creators game unless he's gonna specify it was made by a different team, or he should have just used the original creators version.
That’s like reviewing a modded version of Skyrim and Blaming Bethesda for the bugs caused by the mods.

Nerrel, I'm loving this series so far. I really hope it continues. Also, I'd be really interested to see La-Mulana and Rabi-Ribi show up in a future episode.
Thanks so much for including Luna Nights! That game deserves a lot more attention than it gets.
There is actually a free Shin Megami Tensei Metroidvania game made by the same people who did the Tohou game that released a few years ago that I enjoyed, if you are interested in checking that out. I believe it was called Shin Megami Tensei Synchronicity Prologue (or something).
I doubled this, I think that game plays really well with managing the items as keys from tge genre, with also including the staple weakness system of the SMT series. Wish it was way longer though....
SMT Synchronicity Prologue is fucking fire, can't recommend it enough. I've started fanboying over team ladybug after this game
HEE HOO!
Dude, hearing you talk so passionately about Cave Story and games in general really reminds me why I love that game so damn much. I own Cave Story on nearly every platform its available on and it's easily one of the best games out there that everyone should play.

I'm watching this video and all of a sudden I see what's missing from most reviews on other channels. You manage to give us a real look at important details of the game without spoiling it, when many do the opposite. Like, I never knew there was a character customization system in Bloodstained. I didn't get a feel for the general campyness in other reviews.
I want to comment so your channel and videos get more attention from the algorhythm, but at the same time... I have nothing much to say this time around... thank you still for making your videos, you are my favorite videogame youtuber, always a joy to listen to your insights.
you've earned an extra 20 respect points for giving a spoiler skip that doesn't go straight to the end of the video.
Is the La-Mulana series a possibility in the future instalments of your metroidvania reviews? Man, I wish it got more attention. Great video, by the way, love hearing your opinions on the subject.
I love the tubes in AM2R, not only because they lock together on the grid so they make sense geographically, but there ARE tubes that connect to the earlier Areas. The gold one on the far left in the tube room in the last area before the end is a tube straight to Area 1. The 2nd one from the right takes you to Area 3. The top one going sideways takes you to Area 4, and Area 4 has one that goes to Area 2 just seconds away from where it spits you out. It doesn't take you to the central blue area, where most power ups are lacking, because that area is a means of travel between areas in and of itself, and it helps you focus on exploration rather than bombing everywhere, so it's good the vast majority of the items are in the areas themselves and not so much this winding spine of the game map, though there are about 10 there if you include the last 3 on the path to the Omegas and Queen, which, if you counted it as its own Area then, gives it a relatively modest amount.
I also like that they wait to give you access to the tubes until the last area because there's no real need to keep running back to earlier areas until you get late game power ups like the powerbomb and screw attack. That one tube you mention that does bring you back to an earlier spot at the game is to skip the manual travel back through the long path to the queen. To me it's really genius actually, especially since there is nothing for you before Area 1 to backtrack for: by your ship, where you see the first Alpha, etc. Definitely more well thought out than a generic warp system that will lead you to backtracking to places after you get a power up to find out you needed this other power up as well if you wanted to solve the puzzle. Castlevania games are notorious for that actually. The Metroid fights are awkward at first, until you find their rhythms, which I HAD to on the Fusion difficulty. The Zeta and Omega are better designed than the Alpha and Gamma in my opinion though, but every single one still makes me feel engaged and like they are a threat. They easily contrast every other enemy in the game in how you handle them, which is sadly not much the case for Samus Returns as tactics that work on just about every enemy also work on them too.
Thank you for reviewing Luna nights! I just finished it (I just got a laptoop and couldn't do so when this video was made) and was pretty interested
I was looking at Touhou Earlier today and this vid gave me the push to get it

Nerrel never fails to ruin my day and that's what I'm here for!
Oh Cave Story, one of my favorite games of all time and I own every version of it including 3D, managed to get a physical version of a Switch port for around 15 bucks on sale and it's one of the coolest physical editions out there, it includes a soundtrack cd, instruction booklet/artbook and even a keychain. Toho is a long running series of bullet hell shooters from Japan. Luna Nights is one of many spinoff titles.
It has a long history and way more lore than you'd expect from something like that.
It has some standout music, and instead of the usual space ship you control a cute anime girl, and most of the bosses are also cute anime girls.
It's hyper rainbow magical girl nonsense, and it's beautiful. However, it's also a bit of a rabbit hole. Don't go down it unless you're ready to not come back up for a while.
The most impresive part of Luna night is that (if I remember correctly) it isn't even an official Spin-off, it's a fan game

Glad to see you included touhou luna nights! Touhou is one of my favorite game series ever and explaining it would be tough for one comment. I highly suggest you check out the original games as they offer a lot imo despite being simple. Love your vids!
Explaining Touhou with a feature-length video would be hard enough, I'm pretty sure the character limit on YT comments makes it impossible to do via text.

The way you talked about Boodstained...have you not played the GBA/DS vanias?
Please tell me you have.
As someone who has played a grand total of 2 main Touhou games and has read exactly too much fanfiction, I can tell you Luna Nights was never meant to be about the story. Knowing the background lore clarifies a few things and makes some foreshadowing more obvious, (The identity of the final boss being the biggest one) but it's not necessary to enjoy the game.
Hoping to see coverage on The Messenger in these mega reviews. Keep up the great work!
I'm going to be 100% honest. I was *about* to type Cave Story wasn't a metroidvania, but I skipped to the Cave Story part and now I can watch the video in peace. Thank you for getting that out of the way right off the bat.
In AM2Rs defense with the soundtrack, any remix from Super is usually a very unique piece in its own right. Hydro Station is its own work of art even though it's just a remix of Upper Brinstar in Super. While Samus Returns only slightly updates the tracks. Magmoor Caverns in Samus Returns sounds like, well Magmoor caverns, which is just Lower Norfair from Super. The Tower in AM2R however, is a much more interesting and appropriate remix of that track given the context within the game. It's also worth mention that every fanfare theme in AM2R was specially remixed by DoctorM64, while Samus Returns uses the exact same themes from Prime. At least AM2R was only taking inspiration from Prime. In regards to each's new compositions I think AM2R takes advantage with the Distribution Center theme being one of DoctorM64s best pieces. Samus Returns has more original pieces but none of them stand out to me except the Chozo Laboratory theme. When it comes to remixes from Metroid 2 specifically I feel AM2R captured the intended tone and spirit the original was going for more. It's cool how Samus Returns uses almost the exact same ambience tracks as the original with all the cool beeps and boops intact, but AM2Rs ambient tracks instil a better feeling of isolation and dread which to me complements what the original was going for more. One final note, AM2R kept Arachnus's theme from Fusion for his fight in AM2R, while Samus Returns uses that theme for the Diggernaught instead which just baffles my mind.
You forgot to mention the seamless transitions between the songs making the areas more interconnected than what the visuals and map designs entails.
If each screen in hollow knight was a random color with meaningless upgrades sprinkled everywhere it would be a good game
Said it better than I could've..
Still salty aren't ya?
@@dalgusmaximus4557 Nah, despite being tongue and cheek he nailed it. Nerrel had stronger points in his critique, but those weren't among them.
Are you saying the game is bad?
@K19 And why is it a bad thing if the areas have ''only one color''? The areas have tons of detail, so exploring never feels boring.
I wonder if Yoku's Island Express is gonna be in these reviews eventually, shit's an insane concept it's so cool
Your reviews are so deep that i don't even care about what are you reviewing, it's just fun.
Really hope you do La-Mulana next. It's easily my favorite Metroidvania ever made, simply because it approaches level design and progression so differently from any other (with the possible exception of the old MSX game Knightmare II: Maze of Galious, which La-Mulana was explicitly designed as a spiritual successor to.)
I do have a feeling you'll really hate the game though. It's definitely _not_ nice to its players.
20$ Is too much for a game that you can finish under 5 hours
RE3 remake with 60$ price:Starts to sweat
I prefer shorter games if I have fun with them. I get tired easily if a game takes more than 8 hours and usually just wanna get to the next game in my backlog. Still, 60 is too much but hey, I paid 72 euros for Metroid Fusion and it takes under 2 hours to beat. The first time took me over 10 hours since I was just a stupid kid and tried to 100% on my own. I didn't even know you could shine spark.
To be fair you paid 60 for 2 games, not just the RE3 remake.
In any case, I liked RE3, and I don't regret paying 60 for it. But I do wish they gave it more time.
Time is not really the ultimate equalizer tbh RE3 remake is mediocre by many reasons alongside with the short length. For example, recently the so infamous EA announced the "remaster" (many quotations) of Mass Effect, 10+ years old games + all the abusive DLC in one package... $60. And the fans embraced the idea, lol they think it's a "fair" price because these games combined will provide 100+ hours of gameplay. I think that's a ridiculous idea, more content/bloat ≠ quality. Mass Effect tells a decent space opera story, the conclusion is pretty bad tho... still, it could be a package of 3 perfect games, each one having 150 hours, etc.. it doesn't matter, $60 is just way too much for games that belong in the goddamn PS3 generation
I know most did not play Samus return with 3D, But that was probably the game that was the most enhanced visually by it.
All of the background is actually layered and looks really cool.
Thanks Nerrel.
