  • Diastasis recti happens when your rectus abdominal muscles or your “six pack” ab muscles separate vertically. This can happen to women or men, but diastasis recti is most common in women who are pregnant. More pregnancy stretches & exercises: • 5 Best Pregnancy Lower...
    Dr. Jen helps me show you not only how to check to see if you have diastasis recti, but also a great and easy way to strengthen those muscles in a safe and correct way to help reduce that space.
    A diastasis recti can occur when your belly expands from pregnancy or being overweight, and the connective tissue gets stretched out, pulling the rectus abdominis apart.
    Often people try to correct this by doing a lot of crunches, but if you are already stretched out in that area, traditional crunches can make it worse.

    My OB told me muscle separation was normal and I shouldn't worry about it... I should have worried about it, because I've made it worse. "Your doctor" may not know everything and honestly may not care. Never stop seeking info!!!

    I actually experimenting this as I didn't learn beforehand after my pregnancy to do any ab exercise or ways to prevent diastasis issues. I look pregnant and I've tried high fiber diet, loose clothing, and pelvic exercises, but what I can do. I'm 7 years in with this issue. I don't want plastic surgery be my only option

      I feel the same way too. Sometimes I look like am still pregnant and as I eat the more my tummy extends. I am 130lb so am small but I fell fat because of that Bulge in my tummy. When i suck in my tummy I can feel my muscles underneath but once I relax it’s like am 6 months prego. I have done some much suggestions but nothing works. I feel like seeing a surgeon is the only way to tighten it back. And I also feel like it shouldn’t consider cosmetic, and could at lease be covered or half covered my insurance.

    I was wondering if you both could help answer a question for me, I had a baby year ago, and I wasn’t allowed to do any workouts at all until 3-4 months after baby, I never got told about my tummy until that time but even then I wasn’t and still not allowed to do any full on workouts. So I never really knew what workouts to do. After months I finally started doing some workouts I found online that suppose to help. I had a one finger separation and I got down to a half, I had to stop working out again and didn’t have time as I went back to work and things got a lot busy. Now I see the bump again and I felt my tummy and realised I’m back to a one or two finger separation, I got a little sad cause I worked so hard to get it down and thought I was doing well, but now I’m back to square one or maybe even worst. I was wondering if you could tell me why it went backwards? And what I can do to help it?
    Thank you 🙂

    I want to introduce this to my husband ..... the only problem is he has developed over recent years a 'hernia' related bulge in the 6 pack region, directly above his belly button, clearly evident when he attempts even minor crunches & he worries even they may be damaging. Can he do your demonstrated exercise without fear of further damage?

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  6 лет назад +1

      These should be fine to do as long as he does them correctly and doesn't feel the bulge while doing them.

    Hi! I am 14 weeks pregnancy with my second baby and I was diagnosed with this. I have actually had this undiagnosed since my first. Is there anything I can do now while I’m 14 weeks pregnant to help/prevent any further separation? My OB is planning on putting me into PT after my baby is born, but I would love to start working on this now.

    Questions: Is this suitable for any age and will it work on a diastisis that happened over 10 yrs. ago and is still present? Also, I had a physical therapist tell me that there was no fixing a diastis and that it was something a person just had to learn to live with; that it would never go away. Is that true?

      That’s false. No matter how old your diastasis is you can fix it through exercise and correct posture and breathing!
      I’ve been talking to many specialists who had diastasis recti for many years and they fixed theirs!
      You just need to be consistent with the exercises and it’ll close! It’ll take time but it will close!

    I guess 48 years later is too late to start these exercises. LOL. Even though I had always had a very "flat" abdomen after 2 babies and was within 5 pounds of non-pregnant status, I had the midline bulge, the doctors dismissed my observation and credited it to mid 30's pregnancy and stated there was no solution except to accept my new body image. Maybe I would have been too lazy or occupied with 3 children to adhere to an exercise program anyway. (Got the Kegels down pat!) Hope practitioners like Dr. Jen can get this word out. Meanwhile, I will coninue to work on acceptance and put on my Spanx for special occasion outfits.

    Can you use a stretch band (aka TheraBand) in lieu of a towel? My brother has this and I'm trying to see what we can do to fix it. He's just now lost enough weight that we can see it, but his insurance doesn't cover PT. We're waiting to see if it's a hernia which his doctor wants first, but assuming it's diastasis, we have heavy stretch bands we could use. I'm wanting to do this exercise when we go to work out if the bands would work. If not we will start bring towels or a brace, it'd just be easier to use the bands.
