Colosseum monotypes are funny because theres like. 3 eligible types. Normal, Flying, and Water are the only types you can get a full team of 6 in. I played mono-flying myself and it was pretty brutal, but mono-water would be pretty reasonable; you get plenty of options early on in Croconaw, Quagsire, Qwilfish and Mantine (plus Octillery once you purify Remoraid). Then there's lots of rain-dance users to play around with, Surf is a pretty handy AOE move, and your final team member is *Suicune*. Pretty stacked squad in a game thats normally quite anemic on team options.

Once again, I have to give major props for the work that would have gone into Part 2 of this mini-series which has actually gotten me interested enough to attempt a monotype run myself at some point, once I figure out which game I want to try lmao. As for ScarVi, I'm someone who absolutely favours story and characters over anything else in basically every game, so for me, they're an easy 8.5/10. Terra is the first gimmick I've enjoyed, I love 90% of the new Pokémon, the story and character designs are incredible, and the region is nice enough for me. "Amazing, but flawed" is probably the best way I can describe them.

I love Scarlet and Violet personally. Crafted my own monotype ruleset and have been having a blast doing challenge runs. I have done Normal, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Steel and am approaching the endgame of my current Fighting run. All flaws aside, these games have been straight 9.75 out of 10 for me when it comes to fun. I feel like a kid again, haven't replayed a Pokemon game over and over like this in years!
In case anybody is curious, my rules go as follows: No items in battle, no overleveling for the next boss (to the best of your ability), no EV training of any kind (including vitamins) and held item clause meaning you cannot use more than 1 of each held item on your team.
On top of those rules, I have team restriction rules:
-Only allowed 2 mons before the first gym badge, no fully evolved
-3 mons, one fully evolved until 4th gym badge is earned
-4 mons, two fully evolved until the 6th gym badge is earned
-5 mons, 3 fully evolved until the 8th gym badge is earned
-either 5 fully evolved or 4 fully evolved and 2 not fully evolved mons allowed until you beat the professor
-no team restrictions post professor, challenge ends after the second Champion battle in the school tournament
The team restrictions are specifically for important battles, I run around with a full team when battling the random trainers in the world cause I don't care about those battles lol I just be very careful with which mons I evolve due to the fully evolved restrictions on the boss battles.

Liked and subscribed! Part one got recommended to me, so here's hoping the algorithm pops off for you man. I can never commit to the challenge of a nuzlocke whenever I try, so monotype runs have been my jam for a while now (plus, who doesn't love a theme?). I did a mono-Bug run in Emerald and it was insanely tough, lol. The team was a bunch of fun though: Beautifly, Dustox, Heracross, Pinsir, Ninjask, and Armaldo. I'm also a fan of monochromatic runs, as they allow for more variety while still holding the overarching theme. I did another Emerald run with a green team that shaped up really cool: Kecleon, Cradily, Flygon, Breloom, Ludicolo, and Gardevoir.
Really great work on these vids, the quality is top notch and you have a great voice for narration!

I’d argue that ghost is the best for SV. Skeledirge, as always, is absolutely bonkers, but unlike fire you get much better coverage for your weaknesses. Ghost doesn’t like dark and normal too much, but the mankey line can take care of those fights with relative ease. Early game can be handled with just your crocalor and mankey, late game is covered with skeledirge, annihilape, gholdengo (assuming you care enough), gengar, Mimi kyu, and palossand. The largest threat to ghosts is opposing ghosts, and although that rule doesn’t apply much to ryme’s god awful movesets, Iono Mismagius is definitely a possible run killer. Thankfully yet again crocalor comes in to save the day by not being weak to either stabs and being able to yawn and snarl it, and then something such as brambleghast can come in and nuke it with a tera grass bullet seed for example. Heck I don’t even think crocalor is needed for that, if you have tera grass brambleghast you definitely win like immediately. Overall I feel like ghost is the best type just because it has no unsurpassable matchups, while fire has to deal with the tatsugiri and dondozo, an entire ground type elite four member, a dragon type elite four member, a water type gym, and early klawf. And dark has to deal with the 2 hardest bosses of the hardest story line countering you, fairy Ortega and fighting eri. Yeah you get pawniard and skuntank for Ortega, along with spiritomb sableye Grimmsnarl honchkrow for Eri, but that’s not nearly enough. Fighting is actually maybe as good as ghost for the runs tho, just as the mons with coverage are strong enough to blast through their counters, like pawmot obliterating E4 Larry.

Im currently doing an electric type mono run of violet. The only struggles you will have will be Great Tusk/Iron Treads (depending on which version you play), and Rikka. Rotom and Pincurchin(with electric surge) are incredible members and while you have very limited options, the additional typings you can use along with Rotom make this run quite fun. Plus, the reason on why i chose violet is because if you plan on doing the dlc then you have more opportunities to use the Alpha Miraidon as your electric surge pokemon.

I had a lot of fun doing a Poison monotype run of Scarlet. You get Wooper, Gastly, and Shroodle before Mesagoza. I ended up using Hauntikins the in-game trade Gengar, Salazzle, Dragalge, Toxtricity, Amoonguss, and Glimmora, plus Skuntank to help with the psychic gym.

So, somehow out of all the types I decided to do monotype run with for each game (some already done, some in the future) (in mine, remakes + Legends Arceus were added to the list and USUM was not combined with SM), only 1 gets close to being the best one, Normal type in Gen 2. I.e. Chose steel for DPP, Dark for ORAS and electric for FRLG etc. The problem with my list is the at least do not follow the rules of 1 member for the 1st gym.
But at least I'm not attempting Ice in Gen 3 Hoenn. Not only because under the rules stated in the video, but if we were adding the rule of no legendaries (which you really should). You have Glalie and Walrein to utilise. And only Glalie + Walrein. But it gets worse, in a normal playthrough you have to wait until Shoal Cave. Or you know, the place where you get a shell bell, the cave right about the 7th gym. Game Freak really did like putting ice types at the end game didn't they. This also means Glacia's team is amongst the worst for any elite four member. But at least she stuck to her type rather than a certain someone in DP.
But also thanks for making a part 2.

But at least a gen 1 dragon one, when you get dragonite it'll be amazing, which could be like 50-75% of the way through. And the DPP steel type run did make me love bronzong, specifically when it evolved. Trying to use a bronzor was the opposite of fun, the same feeling as using a bastiodon and having to wait until level 52 for it to get iron head. A pokemon with 52 attack. I’m currently doing a “Game Mastery Challenge” for the mono type run of every type in Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire on the PokéCommunity forumgrounds. (No, i do not understand why Emerald was excluded, though I guess the rule that says third versions are a different game makes more sense for Platinum.) I started with Ground-type, and now I’m doing a Flying-type challenge. Ironic that Earthquake won’t affect my team at all now. There’s a lot of caveats to the challenges because obviously, you can’t catch the dragon-type Pokèmon before the 1st gym, so I gotta hack in Bagon. I am really dreading the Ice-Type challenge because there’s all of two fully evolved Pokémon species for me to use (though the rules say I can use more than one of each). A word of advice for anyone doing a Fighting monotype run for Black 2 or White 2 - DON'T try it on White 2 unless you've got a lot of patience or a friend to trade.

Skeledirge is possibly the most broken starter after Swampert. Funny thing is, the third most broken IMHO is Infernape (though it has a tough competition with Bulbasaur). Not only is almost every single gym type weak to either Fire or Fighting, but it's the only original Sinnoh Fire type. Makes it kinda special. But here comes an even more favored Fire starter. You thought you were the chosen one, *but it was me, Dio - I mean Skeledirge!*

For Scarlet and Violet (including the DLC) I could see myself pulling off a Grass Monotype run. Why? Two reasons: Meowscarada and Ogerpon. And the best part is of course Ogerpon’s masks which allow her to keep her Grass-type on top of three additional secondary types: Water, Fire, and Rock.
And besides, Meowscarada has a scary amount of coverage with moves like Flower Trick, Night Slash, Brick Break, Play Rough, Aerial Ace, and the like.

When I first started this video and heard the music in the background I went nuts cus it sounded so familiar and was such a bop but I couldn't remember what it was lol. I knew the soundfont sounded like heartgold/soulsilver so i just combed through that soundtrack for ages until I found out it was the SS Aqua theme lol, great choice! I personally had a lot of fun with scarlet and violet, I think the environments look like n64 graphics and they released super buggy, but I personally never had any glaring issues while I was playing through the game, even at launch. And I find that scarlet and violet have a very enjoyable endgame with tera raids, and shiny sandwiches making shiny hunting more accessible than its ever been. I actually went and got a ton of shinies for the first time ever because of it. I agree that Sword and Shield are great for monotype runs, I bred an alolan ninetales (my favorite pokemon) with snow warning from my copy of ultra sun, sent over the vulpix to a fresh shield file, and used it as my starter for a mono ice run, and did great. Mamoswine was the mvp.

I really like SV for a chill normal playthrough, but in a monotype run where you're looking for very specific pokemon and only really care about getting to the next important battle, the open-world-ness can get tedious. Maybe I'll do a monotype for my first playthrough of the next game.

These videos alongside the one by magcarjoe are what introduced me to monotype runs, I’m definitely planning on attempting a mono-rock run when I get the chance.
My thoughts on scarlet and violet are pretty mixed. I can’t say much on the gameplay since I haven’t played it, though, in spite of its flaws the open world aspect and the lack of required HMs seems like it would make traversing the world a lot more fun. The Pokémon designs, for the most part, are also pretty nice. There are a couple lame ones here and there (here’s looking at you, pawmo.) but there’s also a lot of great ones. Glimmet, arboliva and wo-chien have actually become some of my favorites.
In terms of the flaws, People tend to hammer on the game for its bugs, which, yes, it’s not really excusable that the game was released in such a poor state, but that’s not really the big issue I have with the game. By far my biggest gripe with it is just how lackluster the region itself feels. For a region based on Spain, it really doesn’t feel all that alive. The transition to open world was kind of a double edged sword, while, from the looks of it, it made for some fun gameplay and traversal, but it also removed the concept of routes, meaning you no longer get interesting environments that flesh out the region and vary based on where you go, instead it’s just big flats of grass with the occasional empty beach. Not to mention the towns full of houses that are literally only there for decoration since you can’t enter them, plus the shops just bring menu screens. Also, this is more of a petty issue, *but why did they remove the fossil Pokémon in the games about the past and future.*
Overall I’d give it 4.5/10. There’s definitely potential but it really feels like gamefreak screwed the game over by rushing it out. A lot of the games issues could probably have been fixed if it just had a little more time in the oven.

I did something similar to a monotype challenge in gens 1 and 2. (My gen 3 games had some technical difficulties that eventually came for my gen 2 games too...) and I would try to beat the elite 4 with a mono type team. Certain types definitely had more issues than others.

And I did a fire run of Scarlet with Blaze breed Tauros, Rotom Heat, Ceruledge, Scovillain, Salazzle, and Skelidirge. I love doing mono type runs and they’re honestly a lot more fun in my opinion than Nuzlockes cause they’re much more casual and not so rng baded but you’re still pushed to use new pokemon and one that you might not have given a second thought otherwise (looking at you Ribombee)

It actually went extremely well. Dewgong & Lapras are a lot better in Gen 1 because their special attacks are a lot higher, Jynx is one of the best mons in any Gen 1 playthrough, & STAB Blizzard from Articuno hits everything pretty hard.

my very first monotype run was prior even to the release of Ruby/Sapphire, with a Water run of Gold, using Feraligatr, Quagsire, Mantine, Octillery, Qwilfish, Lanturn, and Gyarados. I don't remember if I used Lapras or not. I was under the mistaken impression (an impression not rectified until recently, in fact) that Tentacool/Tentacruel were NOT GOOD, which is why I went with Qwilfish. I...did not look up stats at the time.
but it'd be a while before I did another monotype, and that was in White 2, where I did a Bug run. I also ended up doing a Grass run, where I learned how truly busted Ferrothorn is. What an insane Pokemon, lol.
I didn't do monotypes in the next several generations, but I've set for myself a project of eventually doing EVERY TYPE in Violet. I've already completed Grass and Normal. I'll miss Arboliva, having used it so much (it was also in my initial run's team rotation, so I used it three times, lol, the thing is very good with some investment, not even needing type coverage). Violet is great for monotypes because, yes, all the starters have secondary types in their final form, but also almost every type has something catchable under level 21, and you actually can go almost anywhere that has Pokemon under the obedience cap, with the notorious Cliff Skip, which takes some patience but is not hard to pull off.
I think Ice, Rock, Steel, and Dragon are the only hard ones. but other than Ice it can still be done with only a little trouble.

I did a Ghost run and traded over a Hisuian Zorua and Rowlet to be able to use them in Scarlet. SV are also unique for Monotype runs because of 1 thing - Tera.
Think about it, if Iono can use it to have Mismagius on her Electric team and Kofu can use it to have Crabominable on his Water team, I have no reason not to be allowed Garganacl on my Ghost team or Grumpig on my Flying team.

10:48 I'd give it a 7/10 with 2 points for unforgivable graphics and performance alone. I'm not a _grafics_ guy, but this is one of the few games, Pokémon or otherwise, where performance and the look of the world detracts from my enjoyment of the game.
The other point goes to not having enough stuff to do outside of the main quests. The post-game, side quests, and finding optional secrets, games, etc. is lacking.
But the story is great, the variety of Pokémon is outstanding, it is still fun to battle, and the characters gave me more motivation to keep moving through the story than maybe any other game.

I did a fighting mono-type run of Scarlet, and it was such a breeze! Ironically, the hardest part was the fighting type star base. (Yes, I had more resets to Eri than Larry in the elite 4).
As for my opinion on Gen 9… I want to love it so much. I have completed 4 runs, and I have gone back to the DLC. This game just runs like molasses and I absolutely HATE the terra Raids. I have never gotten into emulation, but every time I pick up the controller, I ask myself if it is worth it to dump my rom onto the computer and find a performance patch.
I recently picked back up my copy of Shield… It has been so much fun to return to this game. This is my 14th run of gen 8. Even though it is linear, the gym teams are more challenging (Except Milo), and there is so many different ways to play the game when you have the DLC too.
Also, the Dynamax raids play way better than the terra raids. I wish the timer system would be in gen 8 and the turn counter would be in gen 9. I like the timer better, but it is inexcusable for me to loose 15-20 seconds of time while the switch is trying to load my next round of options. The timer never slows down even when I can see the frame-rate. I feel like I am loosing out on a couple minutes of the raid just waiting to click my next move

So for me, Scarlet and Violet were still backstabbed by DEXIT because if you DID want a Monotype run of every type, you'd be missing a subtype that would deal with every gym, every titan, or every Team Star mission. Like my Grass types severely are missing Ferroseed to resist the Rock types. I had to get a Steel Tera Deerling to best that damn Bombirdier.
I'd give it a 7 out of 10. It's better than SwSh, but those glitches are BAD for the experience.
