My 1st car was a 97 manual civic ex in 2018. Second was a 06 infiniti g35 coupe automatic in early 2020. Finally yesterday got a used 2020 haundai veloster N manual with 51k miles it handles great pretty quick and I've missed rowing gears. 22k OTD 4k off dealers asking price

Your age plays a big role. My first car was a VW Dasher station wagon with 150k miles. $500. Sometimes you had to jiggle the spark plug wires to get it to start. It was thrilling to be independent, and driving was very new. At 52, my gut instinct is that I’d be much less than enthralled, aside from the reminiscing.

Had to work my first summer in college to buy my first car, a used Corvair with a four-on-the-floor manual transmission, rear engine air-cooled aluminum block four-banger. This was the car that Ralph Nader vilified as "unsafe at any speed", but was huge fun to drive, we took it on road trips all over the country. Can you imagine working a three-month summer job during college today and buying a cash car, no way! Was able through scholarships and side jobs to pay my way through college, another impossible dream today. Somehow we've managed to destroy a good economic system that fueled a comfortable middle class lifestyle, sad to see.

First car 1980 Tercel, 4speed. 2dr. Windup windows and an am radio!!! Got over 500K out of that one. Next was 2 older (mid 80s) Toyota 4x4 pickups. Both had 22RE engine. Both beasts. New fun car was an 07 Subaru Legacy GT turbo 5 speed manual. What a hoot.
Now I have a summer sunday car, 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP. I had the GMPP installed and now puts out just shy of 300HP. Paid 15K in 2018, it had 42,000km. I now have almost 80,000km on it, owes me nothing. Hasn't asked me for anyrhimg except for tires. And I could sell it now for more than I paid. Love it.
My daily is a 2023 Bolt EUV after 15yrs of 4x GMC Sierra Crew Cabs 4x4. $$ to fill up was getting crazy for a commuter vehicle.

My first car was a '67 VW Squareback. 300 bucks. Everything on it needed repair. The headlights fell off and I replaced them with dune buggy headlights. Original tan finish was spray painted over with orange. I spent $600 in repairs, drove it 45,000 miles, until the day the electrical system started on fire and the passenger compartment filled with smoke. Good times.

I say take the bus until you can comfortably afford a car (purchase/insurance/maintenance). I took the bus until I was in my 30's then I bought what I wanted...a Acura NSX. big mistake. Downgraded to an Acura Integra. My home, saving for a rainy day and retirement took priority.

I do miss my first car, a 1991 red Mustang GT 5 speed. I wish I had it back. But I still love my hail damaged 2001 Tahoe that I got for $800. I do regular maintenance on it and the truck runs great with 188k miles. Also unlike the Mercedes, I don't have to worry about it in the parking lot. And honestly I love my beaters more than my nice cars.

My first car was a 1986 Oldsmobile tornado with a antenna that would go up and down automatically and lights that would come up and down automatically I thought it was the coolest thing. It had one of those digital displays in the '80s I thought it was the coolest car ever. That 3.8 l from GM actually was a really good engine they don't make anything like that anymore which is sad but I agree with you I do think that today's cars just don't have the same nostalgia as the old cars and they were much simpler in a much simpler time

Yessir. Working at a car dealership especially, well for me at least, I feel just indifferent. Does nothing.
When I was 18 I bought a non running 1981 Imperial. Towed it home, replaced the fuel injection, detailed it up & I felt like driving a fricken rolls Royce haha
The memories are literally priceless. The parties, driving around with friends , camping on and on . To this day if I would spend any significant money on a weekend car , it would be an old American luxury car like a 1978 Seville or old Mercedes SEL etc

What if you do not know how to fix or have a mechanic? I am about to get rid of my current car since it is a lemon and I will not have a car. I am looking at a new Toyota SUV or thought of getting a Toyota suv for 10k cash.. How much would the cash car cost maintenance wise and will it break down on me..

I would buy a new car if it did a better job than what mine does for me. Most people don't buy a new car, most people drive used cars. some people finance a new car and some buy it outright but not the vast majority of drivers. Regardless of who you are 3000-5000 should get you a cheap used car

Rowing the gears gets old. I've had both manuals and autos. There is no universal truth about them. If you think you're "exciting" because you drive a stick, congrats, but that is no more true than people who drive automatic transmissions are boring.

TBH I like convenience, so I like to be close to work. I’m ok with taking a bus. Buying a cheap car outright is ideal and circumstantial for me. It’s hard to find cheap used cars due to today’s economy.
Quebec cars only need 1 safety in its lifetime so it’s a real gamble to buy anything used unless you bring it to Ontario for a safety prior to the purchase. Some small dealers are known for selling lemons. They can get away with it because there is very little recourse. Ontario small dealers can be just as problematic.
Montreal car prices fluctuate so much that you can have the same car at either end of a street list for two opposite obscure amounts.
Ottawa, well they are overpriced and that is partly because prospective buyers want a car for $5…
Toronto is more competitive so you can get a better selection at better prices.
    Cars Owned:
    1. 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue - Starting issues but a nice smooth ride
    2. 2003 Hyundai Sonata GL 4 Dr Sdn - Power steering failed the morning I had to do my wisdom teeth but smooth ride
    3. 2006 BMW 330i 4 Dr Sdn - My passenger seat and restraint signal was on but I would have had to take out the seat to undo the upholstery to replace the censor/chip, ruff ride but fast
    4. 2013 Kia Rio EX 5 Dr - Break issue w/calliper ceasing, oil changes were frequent due to something an oil business did because it was drinking it like water until one day it stopped after bringing it to an oil change place buuuut great zippy car if you take care of it
    Cars of Choice:
    1. Lexus IS / RC / etc… (Brand Reliability)
    2. 1960’s Chevelle SS (Why Not???)
    3. Aston Martin (Who wouldn’t???)
In conclusion, for car buyers new to looking for used cars, always bring the car you’re looking to buy to a trusted mechanic. Not all used car dealers can always be trusted. Read the reviews before buying from a particular dealer. Private sales are easier because you can avoid dealer fees. You can get safety, pay the seller if satisfied, pay the MTO the taxes and plate fees and be on your way.
