- Evan (Ben Platt) tells Zoe (Kaitlyn Dever) all the nice things her brother, Conner (Colton Ryan), supposedly used to say about her, using it as a cover to tell her how he really feels about her.
What is Dear Evan Hansen (2021) about?
A screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Tony, Grammy and Emmy award winning Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect films) reprises his role as Evan Hansen, an anxious, isolated high-school student who's aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social media age. He soon embarks on a journey of self-discovery when a letter he wrote for a writing exercise falls into the hands of a grieving couple whose son took his own life.

This is really one of the best villain songs of all time.
😂😂😂
Sigh. Yet people root for characters on Game of Thrones even though they are not innocent. Evan didn't just decide to lie to these people out of the blue. They assumed that he and Connor were friends and he didn't know how to correct them. He was also trying to help them. It wasn't about him at all at first. Now, were his actions OK? Of course not, but Evan isn't an evil or malicious person. He got caught up in a lie and didn't want to lose them. A liar? Yes. A villain? No.
@@misspriss2482 I agree with your reply
@@misspriss2482 you the type of person to be like well hitler had some good sides
@@Avery99g do not confuse such things with just common sense and an adequate assessment of the situation by the commentator -_-
what you wrote is nothing more than absurdity
It's the little responses from Ms. Dever that got me weak.
"I do that ironically"
"No fucking way" 😳
This sure is one way to proclaim one’s love for another
No just no
I mean, it was only on Evan's part, but, yeah sure.
In the Broadway version, she rejects Evan's advances here because WTF Evan we're mourning her dead brother here.
Also she's hearing those words thinking Connor said them
the way ben sings perfect- it just makes it all so genuine for the characters
This movie is so misunderstood
@@mbwhly i know what the plot is and the message behind it, but i just like his acting. at that current moment in time, they both believe what’s happening to a certain extent whether that’s because of infatuation or pure unawareness
@@wolfstar_is_superior1948 I wasn’t suggesting you don’t understand it, I meant more in a general sense, but I agree the acting and the ability to incorporate music into an otherwise very serious story without ruining the flow is impressive. I absolutely adored it.
@@mbwhly no of course i totally agree
Ben Platt is amazing, and I am glad he was in the movie. Yes , he is 28- but Kaitlyn Dever is 25, so she isn't a young teen either. He is so talented
Difference is she looks 16 and he looks 28. Ben is an amazing talent but you can't tell me there wasn't one of the other Evan's that could do this role and it wouldn't have detracted
@@heinenbard i see everyone say this but i really think he looks young in this, like 18 or 19
@@Setyx That's because you're wrong.
So does that mean that he was 23 and she was 20 when they made this? Cuz I keep hearing people say this movie was made 5 years before it came out.
And now I’m just confused. 😅
Yeah, don’t see why everyone is up in arms about Ben Platt’s age. Look back on the cast of Grease. John Travolta, Olivia Newton John…the whole cast was in their 30’s or close to it. It takes a while to build your talent and get recognized unless you’re in Disney club or hit lightning on RUclips. So yeah, stuff it people!
I’m that anxious kid who can only communicate my emotions through music I relate way too much
depressed kid gets girlfriend by lying about dead brother.
True, this song has always been more disturbing than sweet to me, since Evan is basically lying to Zoe about her dead brother, who she believes wasn't as horrible as she thought.
Talk about a horrible take. Clearly it was over your head.
Can’t even imagine doing something like that
Tell us you haven’t seen the movie without telling us you haven’t seen the movie.
@@ScottLulu but it’s not wrong though? Technically he’s lying to her, saying that her dead brother wanted to tell her all this stuff, but was too afraid to, when in reality, it’s him who wants to tell her. But he’s still lying….

My god His voice is so beautiful 🤩… by far the most beautiful male voice of all time.

Try listening to the original broadway cast! He has the same voice but its more concentrated instead of how this is live
@@OMORIFROMOMORI This wasn't live - this was from the movie...
@@justine15422fun fact! Ben actually sang this on set, another version of the songs was recorded and put into the movie soundtrack.
I wasn't prepared for all the tears that came from this song
Yeah, let's just be glad the film didn't adapt the stage version's ending for this song, where Even tries to plant a kiss on Zoe. On her brother's bed. After he died.
the fact that this is all how evan feels about her and she buys that those were connors emotions kinda shows that evan and connor would've made great friends.
No because she didn't know anything really about conner
@@cattam_gacha3882 well obviously she knew stuff about connor, it's her brother.
@@l.a.3479 no i have seen the movie actually. she knows things about connor from when they were kids.
No it shows the brother wants to bang the sister
Um no it doesn’t? Him noticing those things doesn’t have anything to do with Evan and Connor’s connection plus she’s just being gaslight into seeing the good things about her brought for most of the play so it’s not like she’s even in a normal state of emotional/mental well being.
Ben is the best bro his voice is so angelic 😭
Ben Platt always looks so tense I this movie

This is my favorite song in the show
Sameeee, I haven’t watched the show yet but I found this song years ago though a MAP and became obsessed
Without context this song is super cute. With context its just…yeah…
This song is incredibly messed up when you think about it in the context of the story. Really just shows how dark the plot really is.
I really wonder why they made the choice to switch the lyrics/dialogue on the "indigo streaks in your hair" line
But really, I wanted to hear “he didn’t” 😂
You mean the you looked really pretty ahem it looked pretty cool?
Trying to find an excuse to say the F word? I dunno. I thought the original line was funnier than “No F ing way” but it was funny
No one will ever convince me that this movie, and the music in it, isn’t brilliant.
Once you watch the Broadway version you realize the movie is trash
So true . It was lost in translation and how
@@sabrinafrancez5272 yeah I saw the West End version (British Broadway) before reading or watching the movie and normally I’d say the book is way better than the play or movie but in this case the play was the absolute best, made me cry so much I agree with you 100%
Mitchel B your right! The music in the musical is way better and has better voices for the characters. I do love Ben Platt and whoever plays Zoe, but if the movie was made in 2015 or whenever the music first came out, the songs would sound better.
Well, take that stand, I guess.
Sound quality of this movie is something else. Holy moly 🥴
Is that compliment?
In the interviews they said he did a lot of these scenes live. And that's why a lot of the crew would start crying cos his voice and the emotion was so raw.
@@mephistopheles5735 EVEN the Les Mis movie didn't have such bad sound mixing, and that movie's songs suffered from live recording as well.

i love ben platt, hate him in this role. there is so many younger actors who would’ve been a much better fit for this role. in an attempt to make him look younger they made him look older. you can see the makeup and the wrinkles and that hair was not it.
Pls- lmao 🥲
My dad had grey hair in high school. There's no real logic in saying Platt looks too old.
@@Ringohulk777 It's not just the hair. You can clearly tell that guy is not a high school student
Whoever green lit that hair should not work in Hollywood.
Why did they make him look like a creepy middle-aged guy?
Probably because the actor who played him is 28 years old
Omg i shouldn't read all these shitty comments
Don’t let it take away your love for this movie.
@@mbwhly ❤️
Or make one yourself 🙄
I feel the movie version of the song was trying to be too much like dialogue and didnt have enough singing tone
I think that’s something a lot of movie adaptations of musicals struggle with, Les Mes is a really good example of this. I think it’s because they think it seems more dramatic and less “cartoony” than watching it on broadway.
I fcking love Ben Platt
Looooooooooove!!!!!
anyone else kind of pissed that they gave the f-bomb to Zoe? personally i thought they would give it to connor or jared since that made more sense.
I guess it shows how doubtful she was, but you’re right.

This is so twisted lmao
So a professional make up artist did Ben’s face?

Agreed. I loved the show - but it haunted me. The more I “routed” for Evan, I realised how dark this show is. I like it though. It’s good to shine a spotlight on complexities of suffering and how they might manifest. Good show to watch guys if taken in respectful context

Ok Ben looks a bit old but not more than 20 in this but Kaitlyn looks the right age at least especially since she’s 25
Jordan Fisher would have killed it. I get using Ben Platt, but I just can’t get past how old he looks.
They’re only a year apart in age
I don't think Jordan would've been able to get away with it in the movie, either.
I would have loved to see Michael Lee Brown or Sam Tutty as Evan in the movie.
@@Father_of_Death Sam Tutty. 👍
What’s the movie
I prefer him playing Evan on stage. Should’ve casted someone younger for this Evan
Exactly
Hollywood really needs to stop this trope of casting 20-30 year old actors to play High School students. Would it really kill them to get ACTUAL TEENAGERS?
Or not had the awful hair in the movie
How did none of the THOUSANDS of crew members with their eyes on this stop and say to themselves, "Hey, this is literally the creepiest fucking thing that has ever existed"?
Also, how did none of them say "We can't use this actor. He's clearly a grown man and doesn't look like he could be a high school student. We need to cast a younger actor for this part"?
while Conner is a bully like when he was in school like he always tossed those papers in has hand while he technically wrote his name on the coast he was act like to be his friend with Evan some point and Evan fell on top the tree while broke his arm while Conner die for the first time while being seeing Evan try to help him up like becoming a friend to him I know it’s just a sad movie perhaps but it was a little emotional and Conner through his hand in the wall like being mad at something what was wrong with him while being in a fight shame sense?
Creepy, ok, tiene una voz hermosa, TAMBIÉN
Evan’s love letter , & telling Kaitlyn tht. He’s. Really the one who has the crush her all along. But doesn’t. Want her to know but covers it up in the song & says Connor. Said all that. Stuff. To. spare her feelings. Due. to his. Death.
Patrick Bateman on broadway
What he saw he left unsaid so how would even know if “Connor” told him that. Is it really unsaid? That’s one big flaw in his song to show it’s really his emotions. Small things make a great message to a song
Where can i watch this show?
I think it’s on Prime Video to rent
So…this is what she now thinks her BROTHER thought of her?
It would be quasi-incestuous…
I guess nothing a few years of therapy won’t fix… 😂
i’m sorry but my family and i made it an hour into this movie before turning it off
Why
@@simoncaruana4613 Maybe they found it cringey, or maybe they didn't vibe with the moral implications of gaslighting a grieving family 🤷♂️
@@billqiu4692this is fake. This didn’t actually happen.
They couldn’t have made Ben’s character any more unlikable in this movie.
The fact that Ben looks way too old actually makes the character of Evan even worse. What Evan does is absolutely horrible. But you’re able to forgive him for that since he’s supposed to be this naïve teenage who didn’t think all of this through. But because Ben looks too old, all I see is this grown man-child trying to get involved in this dead kids family. It makes Evan come off as some kind of sociopath

Not at all. The stage show is totally different. There is a bootleg on RUclips of Ben Platt doing Evan on broadway. I think you would really enjoy that.
did they totally ditch the kids in this version?
What else was I suppose to do let your livelihood get hurt
What?
You know how dumb this would sound in real life singing to her without music
He isn't singing. In musicals the songs aren't "songs" unless someone is giving a performance. They are the person's thoughts or dialogue; we just hear them as music.
Actually, it sounds more natural to me without the music.
This movie is what happens when you don’t try to kiss Zoe Murphy on her brother’s bed AFTER HE DIED
Why is this 40-year-old singing to this teenage girl? Creepy.
She's not a teen and he's not 40
@@braidena1633 Uhhhhh…that’s the joke! He looks way too old to be in high school.
He sounds like Michael crawford crossed with Mumford and sons begging for air while also doing opera while his speaking voice is a cross between hughie from the boys and Steve Carol
No
This comments section is bullshit, some people in here need to get a grip. Evan Hansen ISN'T A VILLAIN. Just because he lied doesn't make him a villain, come on.
He could've stopped the lie at any time. But he instead let it keep growing because of how much it was benefiting him
Whatever
Ok whatever
well now i know why he was nominated for WORST ACTOR at the Razzies 😂
Why?
Um.. ok?
His acting isn't the problem. It's the direction. He got so used to playing it to the back of the house that he did it in the movie and the director didn't tell him to correct it. It's a great on-stage performance. It just felt a bit extra for the movie. Even still, I don't understand why this movie gets as much hate as it does. Someone called it worse than Cats. That makes absolutely no sense
Booo! Shame! Ben is amazing!
He won a Tony award
this "person" shouldn't be allowed to sing in public - get real. AND he's 47
28, but yeah.. let a talented 17 year old play a talented 17 year old, right?!?!?!
@@juliacahoon7093 so I guess Grease shouldn’t exist, then? Along with countless other movies where actors in their 20’s played teenagers.
@@mbwhly my point is just that there are so many talented people the same age as the role that's being cast. It's beyond time that Hollywood casts teenagers as teenagers.
@@juliacahoon7093 I personally didn’t even think about it while watching the movie. As others have said, there are so many teens who look like him or older. Much older. There’s a series on Hulu called Pen15, where two women in their 30’s play 13 year olds and it’s brilliant. The production is so good that you don’t think twice about it. Anyway, I know my opinion on this movie and the performance is against the grain and I’ve accepted that lol.
Ben Platt has one of the most angelic voices ever, you take that back 🥺
If they would of just let Ben Platt use his own hair...he wouldn't look so f'ing ridiculous. Its so distracting.
They really should've just casted a younger actor in this part
