Every time Jay has a lukewarm reaction to a song I can usually predict it will be a fantastic pop tune like this. Badfinger was a brilliant group in a genre we now refer to as power pop. They were heavily influenced by the Beatles and were closely associated with the band. Unscrupulous management destroyed their career, and led to the band's tragic end.
@@Lensmaster1yes, but if you are going to be a reactor you can't just diss a whole genre of music because you're not giving it a chance. I'm pretty sure he's liked slower songs than this so I don't understand why he says it's too slow. This certainly is not a song I would slow dance to.
Not just influenced, but produced by and even worked with the Beatles. They were the biggest success on their Apple Corps record label, before everything went up the creek. McCartney wrote their first hit ("Come And Get it") and Harrison produced "Day After Day". Also, some people might not realize, but one of the biggest hits in the 90s by sales was Mariah Carey's "Without You", which was written by Pete Ham and originally recorded by Badfinger in the 70s. They were a great band - very sad story about what happened with them , Baby Blue was the fade-out song on the classic series Breaking Bad, made a lot of new fans , great video guys, keep it rocking 🎶
From about half way through the series I was waiting on them to use it. The use of it at the end seemsed perfect, especially with the opening line being, "I guess I got what I derserved."
They played some interesting music on that show. The scene where they played Windy by the Association was perfect. And I loved that scene where Hank was wearing his Delbert Mclinton T-shirt.
@@hog7203My Dad loved this song, so I grew up listening to Baby Blue. When Breaking bad ended with it, it was perfect. Windy too.. Perfect scenes for both songs..
The Beatles discovered them. Paul and George both produced some of their songs. Paul wrote their song Come and Get It and George played lead guitar on Day After Day I think.
George Harrison started the production of the Straight Up album but was called away and asked Todd Rundgren to step in as producer. Big Todd fan here, and what an honor to have Harrison choose you as a replacement!
this band actually has a sad story, the main singer and his best friend next to him committed suicide a couple years apart from eachother because their manager screwed them over and took all of their money. it's a really sad story. they were supposed to be the next Beatles
I think a third one took his life also. My husband's a walking rock and roll atlas and he mentioned that. He actually saw the two remaining members in the 90s. Badfinger....one of my all time favorite bands from the 70s. Made my heart skip a beat or two. Thanks so very much for sharing. Excellent cruising music.
This song was written by singer Pete Ham about his American girlfriend, Dixie. There was trouble in paradise when the band was on tour and he had to leave her behind.
Great song! Many people thought Badfinger sounded a lot like the Beatles at the time. Actually, they were on the Beatles record label Apple records and Paul McCartney did pen their hit "Come And Get It". Need to check out that song for your next Badfinger song. Thanks. 😎

The most remarkable thing about Badfinger is that you could easily tell someone this was the Beatles and they’d likely believe it. They seemed to fill a gap when the Beatles were in the process of breaking up. They were also the first band for the Apple Records label, founded by the Beatles. So no surprise I suppose?
This was my favorite. It’s not terribly technical or complicated, but there are elements of the melody and lead guitar that really pushed the boundaries of what you could get out of a guitar and amplifier with no effects pedals or digital enhancements. And it’s kind of a sad song from a band that has a very sad story. Much love ❤️
A superb but very tragic band, this was produced by Todd Rundgren and released on the Beatles Apple Record Label. Pete Ham the lead singer on this wrote it about a woman he met on their last US tour. Very popular song and featured recently in the show 'Breaking Bad'.
Love this group. Badfinger were a Welsh rock band from the 60's-80's. They became the first group signed by the Beatles' Apple label. Paul & George wrote & produced a few songs for them. They had some really big hits such as "Come & Get It", "No Matter What", "Day After Day", "Baby Blue" & "Without You". This group had quite a sad history. The band had bad mismanagement & lost most of their money, two members committed suicide & one died of a brain aneurysm.
Badfinger, along with The Raspberries and Big Star, were memebers of a sub-genre known as Power Pop. It was softer rock/pop characterized by lightly distorted guirars, a strong back-beat, and lyrics about love or loss. Badfinger were my favorite of the genre. Although if you want a more up-teimpo song in this genre try Go All The Way by The Raspberries.
I have met Joey Molland many times ,great guy....the most tragic band in RnR history. Of course Pete Ham and Tommy Evans hung themselves 10 years apart. .saw band live once..
I never understand why people call this a slow soft song. It's not "slow", it's mid-tempo. Even many hard rock songs are mid -tempo. I think what's throwing Jay is that great singable pop melody and the vocal with those smooth harmonies. This is not a screaming, destroy your vocal cords, type of song, nor is it meant to be. But at the same time, the production on this song and even the vocals are hardly what I call "soft and mellow". I mean, with that highly distorted guitar tone and that catchy riff as well as those heavy drums and bass, whats slow soft and mellow? This song is fantastic!
A great band that I had almost forgotten about. Might I suggest the 1969 hit by the British rock band Marmalade, Reflections of My Life? Lovely song that brings back nostalgic feelings of my early childhood. I'd also like to suggest the Canadian rock band Lighthouse. They were a multi-instrument band that had hits in the 70s like Sunny Days and One Find Morning. Give them all a try!
"Baby Blue" was Badfinger's 5th of 7 charted singles on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking @ #14 in 1972. The 3 preceding singles all made the Top 10: (Come & Get it (#7), No Matter What (#8) & "Day After Day (#4). "Baby Blue " was produced by Todd Rundgren.
How on Earth do we have another Badfinger reaction and still not have a reaction to their best song "Come And Get It"? It is a song written by Paul McCartney during the Beatles years and GIVEN to the band to record when they joined the Apple Records label. I am asking please make this your next Badfinger reaction. You will not be disappointed.
FYI Ringo Starrs song (written by Harrison) It dont come easy intro is sung by Bad Finger. They were close to the Beatles and signed under Apple records. The lead guitarists guitar was given to him by Harrison.
This is Pete Ham's ode to the country singer Dixie Anderson, whom he had a brief relationship with. They met when Badfinger was on tour in the US, and she went on the road with him for a while, and I believe she even moved to England with him. Sadly, due to their schedules they grew apart. There's a sadness to such an upbeat song. You do get the feeling that Pete really like her, and really regretted having to let go of her.
You might consider checking out the '70s band The Babys (you've reacted to lead singer John Waite's, Missing You). Two of their bigger songs were Isn't It Time and Every Time I Think of You.
The last member to join them played as bad finger in Pete's home town swansea at the heist bar about 5years ago what a terrific night and the woman that the song (without you )is about was there, as their families , i wish a film maker would do their story on the big screen such a terrible way to get ripped off by their manager and the tragic aftermath that followed ,god bless bad finger
This clip was originally from the early 70s TV music show Rollin' On The River, starring Kenny Rogers & The First Edition and filmed in Toronto. To anyone who remembers Badfinger and the story of how some truly evil business deals not only killed the band, but led to the suicide of two of its members, watching any clip of them always has a sad edge to it. But they are still great to watch and listen to.
The inspiration for the band's name was the Beatles song "With A Little Help From My Friends" Which had been called "Bad Finger Boogie" supposedly because Lennon composed the melody on a piano using his middle finger after having hurt his forefinger.
The Beatles were about to let them record their debut album on Apple Records. But George Harrison, who basically discovered them, didn't like the name of the band, which at the time was "The Ivy's." He suggested they come up with a better name. And so, "Badfinger" was born...
Love this song. I've always classified Badfinger as one of the pioneers of Power Pop. very rocking / nasty guitar tones & big drums, yet very melodic and hooky. The guitars aren't super distorted like in modern rock, but they are right on the edge of that distortion & really cutting in the midrange.
That's funny, my band is just learning the song right now. I used to hear it on the radio when I was a kid and I still love it today. It's really a brilliant song. And they did it in B major! What a strange choice, but it sounds great.
It's funny you say that because I kept trying to force it down a whole step into a to make it easier and then we tried it and see which is also easier but that bridge is going to always throw some difficulty in there, and we ended up settling right back in B major. It just feels and sounds so right.
I'm right with you, Amber .. This is an absolute masterpiece ! ❤.. The wonderful melody, the numerous catchy hooks and guitar runs in between the vocal phrases, the beautiful and bittersweet lyrics, the spot on lead and harmony vocals, and more .. I simply adore this song ! .. Jay, you must have wax in your ears, mate🙄
One of my FAV BADFINGER TUNES!!! YEA!!! Ya'll finally listened to it!! I'm with Amber: just a sweet, romantic song!! LOVED their sound! Such a tragic story, all the way around, about all the ways they were done wrong and the way things progressed....would've loved to have heard more from this band!! HUGS, YA'LL!! ❤❤❤❤❤
All their songs are so melodic and feature great harmonies. Though guitar-based and despite their name, they never were a hard-rocking group. They probably could have played heads-down hard, aggressive rock, but they didn't, keeping to great melodies and harmonies and tight song structures.
My big Bro turned me onto to Bad Finger and man the memories come flooding back when I hear this song! He's gone now but one day we're gonna sit back and jam again to this whole album and many many more! I owe ya big Bro and miss ya!! Till then...
Song gives me chills every time I hear it (like right now). This album got lots of play in my house growing up. Knowing the history of the band and Pete Hamm (lead singer) in particular ... gives their brand of Beatle-esque power pop a very "haunting" tone. Being aware of that black cloud always lingering right there ... somewhere close by, changes the whole mood. And being someone who watched BREAKING BAD from MINUTE ONE to the very end ... I was floored. Was not prepared for that. Hate to admit it but tears were shed. It was perfect.
At 2:13, when Tom Evans moves his head back and forth while singing, it reminds me of the 7th grade dances I would go to with the local live bands. It seems like a lot of the singers back then would make the same head movements. RIP Pete, Tom, and Mike.
This was the number 1 song on my Spotify 2022 Top 100. Sorry Jay don't care for it but that's cool. 'Come and Get It' would be a great choice next. Or maybe 'Something In The Air' by 'Thunderclap Neuman', they were both featured in the Movie 'Magic Christian Music'. Cheers.
I saw these lads in Detroit in Feb 74 at the Michigan Palace. These guys were so awesome. They were a Beatles discovery and if you listen closely they have to remind you of the Beatles. As I have told you before I was blessed to be involved with a lot of the Detroit sounds and groups that came through. From the 60s to the mid 70s I was blessed to either know, meet or even jam with so many great musicians
Yes, a band that had such great melody songs like Day After Day, this song which is my favorite of theirs. It is the melody and cadence of the song, with the ascending guitar riffs. Amazing tune from the year of my high school graduation, the glorious year of 1972.
I can NOT listen to this song without getting chills from head to toe!... First off, I loved it since I first heard it in '72... and secondly I will NEVER get the image of the closing scene in the finale of Breaking Bad out of my head every time I hear it!... My fave TV show of all time and such a killer way to have that show go out... plus the brilliance of how the lyrics just happened to work so well with the show... "guess I got what I deserved", yes Walt you did!..... "my love for you, my baby blue", yup in the end Walt had to admit that he was obsessed with his 'blue' meth, his baby that he created, more than the money or anything else... But I digress.... such a GREAT song!
I was a fan of Top 40 radio back in the 70s, and the song was in my memory. But it was really years before I discovered the name of the song and the artist. This was life before the Internet, after all
Their manager ripped them off leaving them penniless causing Peter Ham to commit suicide. Discovered by George Harrison and Paul McCartney. They started to believe Paul was over involved in their music but how do you tell a Beatle to butt out? Another member and Ham's best friend also committed suicide. Such a saf story for a great band. Harry Nilsson recorded "Without You" a major hit for him.
I loved this song as well as Come & Get It, No Matter What, Without You, Dat After Day, etc I winder where this band would be foing today. It was tragic to lose them, as they were on a hot roll out of UK and were a favorite of the Beatles, also. They had written good songs, played well, musically, and had great harmonies. They suffered too many tragedies, and that is too bad, because I thought they were capable of much more., and we only had a short taste but sweet, of Badfinger. ❤😢😅
This song and Day After Day are two of my most deeply loved and favorite songs of all time that speak to my heart and soul! I couldn't get to your reaction fast enough to see you guys experience this old classic gem! And then Rob pauses it and says..."it's not bad" with a near-shrugging expression! Thanks for posting this. Let's hope we get "Come And Get It" before we get the 6th and 7th charted ones.
Badfinger also backed Ringo Starr on "It don't come easy"
One of my favorite tunes ever. I play it on my guitar all the time
This is Pete Ham's ode to the country singer Dixie Anderson, whom he had a brief relationship with.
Great requests, but you probably won't hear either one for a few years. I gave up on giving requests to them
I grew up a metalhead but there will never be a song "to slow for me". A good song is a good song regardless and this song is greater then great.
I always loved this song. Vocals, harmonies and guitars are great.
Written on a piano?
@@vansongsIt's easier for me to play it in A or C on the keys.
@@triggerwarning5762 Go figure
I have no idea but I wouldn't be surprised. That's ultimately how I had to figure it out and then translated it back to the guitar and bass.
It's funny you say that because I kept trying to force it down a whole step into a to make it easier and then we tried it and see which is also easier but that bridge is going to always throw some difficulty in there, and we ended up settling right back in B major. It just feels and sounds so right.
The story of Badfinger is incredibly tragic. A huge talented group but the industry and, seemingly fate, had it out from day one.
Great band... Tragic story. I guess maybe you had to live through those times to really appreciate their sound. I did...and I love the band.
This song is emotional as hell. And even moreso in the context of what they went through in real life.
The guitar tone, fills, & progressions in this song are just brilliant
RIP Jimmy Buffett
All their songs are so melodic and feature great harmonies. Though guitar-based and despite their name, they never were a hard-rocking group. They probably could have played heads-down hard, aggressive rock, but they didn't, keeping to great melodies and harmonies and tight song structures.
If you get the chance listen to their Rock of All Ages from 1970 yup they could rock.
This song brings back some crazy memories when I was in high school. Great band.
My big Bro turned me onto to Bad Finger and man the memories come flooding back when I hear this song! He's gone now but one day we're gonna sit back and jam again to this whole album and many many more! I owe ya big Bro and miss ya!! Till then...
A classic 🙂🙂🎸🎸
I love Badfinger! I keep hoping Jay will like them as much as I do! Lol
More Oldtime Gold! Great Harmony :) Thanks, You Guys! :) Kind of Fun watching to see if J's going to smile on each Reaction! :)
Cheers.
Day After Day was my favorite song by them it's hard to believe that song came out in 72 and then No Matter What is a good one too
I love Badfinger. So many great songs. Glad you’re bringing back some 70’s reactions. .
This song was released in 1971, 52 years ago. I grew up with this kind of music. Watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸🦅
Opened our first set with a cover of No matter What for many years . Their best song imho.
My older brother had their record album "Straight Up" with this song on it. Always loved it, as well as the rest of the album.
Beautiful song. Tragic group history. I love their music. Thanks.❤
Any song Bad Finger did packed the dance floor. Definitely one of the staple bands of the era!!
Always had to turn up the radio when this one came on. Bands back then were all about melodies.
This was life before the Internet, after all
This song is THE Badfinger song. That riff, the drums, the sentiment of the lyrics...
Legendary band that had such a distinctive sound.
What the music industry "suits" did to these guys is heartbreaking, not to mention criminal.
Finally you did it. This is the best Bad Finger song. 👍👍👍👍😊😊
This song and Day After Day are two of my most deeply loved and favorite songs of all time that speak to my heart and soul! I couldn't get to your reaction fast enough to see you guys experience this old classic gem! And then Rob pauses it and says..."it's not bad" with a near-shrugging expression! Lol... it's so amazing with music to see how diverse everyone's tastes are! :)
I saw Bad Finger in a club about 1980, They still had 3 or their original 4 members, Baby Blue might be my favorite song by them. The chords are good in this song.
I used to love to sing this song to myself. I was 15 years old at the time.
SAD 😢 Jimmy Buffett passed. Best beach bum🕊
I was so lucky to have grown up in the 60's
I don't know why, but this song defines the early 70's sound. Guitar tone is so good and clean.
Pete Ham and Tom Evans also sang background vocals on Ringo Starr's first solo effort after the Beatles break up: "It don't come easy".
George Harrison had a part to play in this band. This song is evident of continuing the Beatles style.
Apple Records Label.
I absolutely loved Badfinger. It was such a tragic tale that they ended up with. Great song. It’s very reminiscent of an early Beatles song. They worked closely with Paul McCartney and Apple records and were heavily influenced by the Beatles. Great reaction🌺✌️
Taj Farrant...Crossroads Australia blues player 🔥🎵🎶
HEISENBERG FOREVER!!! All I can think is the "Breaking Bad" finale and I'm crying a bit....Great song
My favorite Badfinger
Had a dog named Dixie I had to put down years ago. Everytime I hear the line "Dixie, when I let you go", It hits me pretty hard.
Tragic story behind the band as well... GREAT STUFF!!!
