Loved this song in notting hill and Elvis’ vibrato is so gorgeous, thanks guys ❤️
I lost my wife to cancer in March and the meaning of my life is still She 😢
Sorry for your loss.
Good music helps.
Oh lord I'm so sorry. Music can help. Give you permission to feel.
😢
Sorry to hear, @minkgraver. Lost Hubby in December. ALL songs have taken on a very different meaning to me, as well. Some are more endearing, and some are even scary to listen to. To me, that means he's "speaking to me" - because he KNEW how much I loved music. I take it as a comfort. I hope you can, too! ❤
So sorry for your loss 😞
This is such a great song, a cover of an old Charles Aznavour song that Elvis recorded for the movie "Notting Hill" with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. And as great as this song is, the movie is even better. You really should check it out on your movie channel. Oh, and if you want to hear more of this type of Elvis music, check out the song "God Give Me Strength" which he recorded with Burt Bacharach, which was also a movie theme song.
Absolutely right Notting Hill is a great Rom com for the movie channel 😊
Charles Aznavour might be advance listening at this point for this crew, but if they are willing to take the plunge on non-English songs I would suggest La Boheme or Hier Encore. He's essentially the French version of Frank Sinatra.
My mother loved this song with Aznavour singing. It must have come out somewhere around the time she left my father and she used to play it all the time. I have complicated feelings about it. Objectively I can say it's a beautiful song, but in my heart I hate it for the memories of dislocated family and loss it makes me feel.
I'm listening to the original Charles Aznavour version and it is terrific. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.
Yes the Charles Asnavour version is the one to listen to next. For some more Elvis Costello check out Watching The Detectives and his version of the great George Jones song "A Good Year For The Roses"
Elvis Costello is one of those musical chameleons who can almost effortlessly transition from genre to genre. From punk to country to rock to crooner, the guy always hits out of the park. ✌️
Crooner is not a genre, it is a singing style.
Did you know that Elvis Costello just covered this beautiful song wrote by french singer/composer Charles Aznavour ?
@hermes3386. Sorry, but wrong. Have you seen the 1999 movie Notting Hill?
@@salbuda6957 Sorry but right ! Have you seen this 1975 video of Charles Aznavour singing HIS song ? --->>> ruclips.net/video/nCJGOEAbvZU/видео.htmlsi=WQUBbtxcg3ugMwkp
Exactly!👍
This song was used in the great romantic comedy movie "Notting Hill" (1999) with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. It was a great hit for Elvis Costello. Great choice and reactions.👍👍👍
You should watch this movie “Notting Hill” with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
@glenntrueman8209 I second, third and fourth that...
Agreed! I loved the movie and the message behind it. Thanks for your reply.@@skadoink1736
One of my favorite movies ever and this song was perfect in it!
Yes, I too love this movie. It is one of my favorites. Thanks for your reply.@@1972mrgray
Costello's "Alison" is really beautiful and sad. A last dance of the evening.
Is he married to Alison Krauss?
They did Alison a few months ago.
He's married to Diana Krall, another superb singer (Jazz)@@lyndadowns4876
Elvis Costello is so multifaceted it's amazing. Have seen him live 5 times over the years and every show was a wholly unique experience. Literally a musical genius.
Did you get to see the tour where they spun a wheel to see which song they would perform?
Did you know that Elvis Costello just covered this beautiful song wrote by french singer/composer Charles Aznavour ?
I love this song! It appears in the movie Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, which is one of my favorite movies. I could watch it a million times, and the soundtrack is exquisite.
One of my favourite films!
Totally 👏🏻 Although bittersweet hearing this now, because as well as being tear jerking at the end of the movie anyway, my partner who shared this film many times with myself passed on some time back. Great film.
Loved, loved loved Notting Hill. I wish Richard Curtis would write more romcoms
What a great song! The original is by a French artist named Charles Aznavour, and it's just as fantastic. You should hear that one too. We love them both.
Please do Elvis Costello’s- Watching the Detectives next. It’s an incredible “Story song”. It paints a picture of a 40’s Noir Film. The Bass is incredible in it.
Veronica is also stellar. as is I Want You. the live version with Fiona Apple, I believe it's a VH1 concert, is an absolute must watch.
Yeah, it's almost like the bass is the only instrument. Love it.
I second that. No more of this pseudo crooner garbage.
That was my first favorite song when I was a kid. 5 year old me played it over and over on my moms record player
She's filing her nails while there dragging the lake from WTD what a brilliant line that is..
A legendary music icon,, Elvis Costello "Everyday I Write The Book"
Definitely!
The original by Charles Aznevour was a UK No.1 in 1974 ,it became a success for him as it was used as the theme song for a mini series of dramas called Seven Faces of Woman .
Mr Aznevour was a prolific songwriter, his songs were covered by a wide variety of artists like Edith Piaf Liza Minelli Frank Sinatra Dusty Springfield .
Elvis Costello counted himself as fan of his work
Elvis Costello - Everyday I Write The Book
Another great song !
Next reaction of Elvis Costello should be “Watching the Detectives”, “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” or “Veronica”
Elvis is just amazing in his versatility! Please react to the video 'Veronica', an upbeat but heartbreaking song of his Grandmother. (the video is a must!) And....YES, please 'Peace. Love and Understanding'. Very, very wonderful suggestion!!
Love Veronica! Great suggestion.
One of the best songwriter/performers out there, you almost can't go wrong with Elvis! Some of his more popular works, "Everyday I write the book", "Radio", "Oliver's Army", and "Veronica" are just a few can't misses.
good song writer but, of course, he didn't write this one.
"Veronica" (co-written with Paul McCartney) is a brilliant song. The whole "Spike" album was incredible.
Elvis Costello has many great songs.
Another vote for his Watching the Detectives. But also, Accidents Will Happens, Everyday I Write the Book, This Year's Girl, Magnificent Hurt, Veronica, Radio, Radio, and so many more.
I adore Elvis. Saw him open for The Police at Red Rocks, Colorado. Also, he did an entire album with Burt Bacharach that is totally amazing.
that Bacharach collaberation was a revelation ....on first hearing it I felt every song was a hit hit hit!!! It still stuns me: i,e, God Give Me Strength....slays me
I’ll bet that was a great concert. I’ll have to check out the album with Burt
@@janetmcguffey1394 so much emotion in that whole album. Beautiful.
Elvis is first and foremost a music fan and aficionado. He has delved into so many different genres with incredible skill and success
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" and "Watching The Detectives" !!!!
First!
Elvis Costello is int of my faves!
My fave Elvis Costello "quirky" track is Every Day I Write the Book. But the lyrics to this song, She, are stunningly beautiful.
One of my faves!
Ive always loved the music video to it also
I love this song...Its from the 1999 Movie, Notting Hill
Elvis Costello explored just about every style of music. The songs from his first few albums with The Attractions are what we most remember him for.
This popped up as I am actually sat watching Nottinghill, the movie. Absolutely love him singing this song 😁❤️❤️❤️
Notting Hill (two words) not Nottinghill (one word)
@@keithrfield yes, I do know this as I actually live here and clearly didn’t hit the space bar, but thank you so much for taking the time to point out my error. I hope this hasn’t caused you too much distress. Have a beautiful day 😁
@@MEM1066 You live in Notting Hill? If so, is it as nice a place as portrayed in the movie? Yes, I am a grammar police as charged. I appreciate your humor in your response. You have a beautiful day as well. 😎
@@keithrfield yes I do. To me, it’s a lovely place to live. It’s home so I am rather biased. There are some beautiful streets , parks and markets. 😁
@@MEM1066 I just added a visit to Notting Hill to my bucket list. I'll look you up when I get there. 😄
It just goes to show how much our early music listening experience shapes our musical appreciation for life. I cannot unhear the Charles Aznavour version of this, with his accent adding a touch of French passion to it. Still like this version too.
Great reaction! Jeff Lynne from ELO did a great version of this, too. Elvis did another crooner song called "God give me strength" is worth a look.
Of this or of the original --->>> ruclips.net/video/CE8SnoQDMgs/видео.htmlsi=5S7813qe619qwe81
Elvis IS in the building. such a rabbit hole….
I’m 67 and this is my Elvis
Such a beautiful love song featured in Notting Hill, a film that I'm hoping you'll soon watch on your movie channel. 🙂 Which is the video for this backdrop of this song.
He is SO VARIED in all his discography. LOVE HIM!!! HUGS, YOU-GUYS!!!❤❤❤❤❤
The original song was composed by French Charles Aznavour, the lyrics in english by South African Herbert Kretzmer --->>> ruclips.net/video/CE8SnoQDMgs/видео.htmlsi=5S7813qe619qwe81
Great reaction, Jay and Amber.
This is a cover of a song by French singer, Charles Aznavour, he had a hit with it in the U.K. and Europe back in 1974.
Tracks to react to by, Elvis Costello are, "Watching The Detectives", "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea)", "Alison" and "Less Than Zero".
I did not expect that. It was great. Thanks
This song makes me think of the movie Notting Hill.
Having not seem the video before I didn't realize they use footage from Notting hill.
Should totally react to You've got away with me by Shania Twain.
I bought that soundtrack on a CD when I was a kid. Still holds up. lol
@@jpeopolis I used have the soundtrack on CD also. Every song on was good.
@@genellecurtis748 I recall, and I could be wrong, Boyzone's "No Matter What" being on the album. I MAY have played that tune a million times. In my defense, I was a literal child. HAHA.
@@jpeopolis ha I was 13 when it came out and yes that song was on there and I played it on repeat.
@@genellecurtis748 Awesome! Last night I added the song to one of my playlists. haha
Elvis Costello, like Joe Jackson, can't be put into any particular box, and is very capable in a wide range of styles/genres.
👍👍👍
The video is footage from the movie Notting Hill, where this song is featured.
You really should react to his song Shipbuilding. There's a horn part in there that Amber will LOVE!
To put Elvis into perspective, he has albums with 40 songs on them. He tries--and mostly succeeds--so many things. You can't listen to Elvis with expectations. He's all over the map. He's great.
Did you know that Elvis Costello just covered this beautiful song wrote by french singer/composer Charles Aznavour ?
Just a beautiful song - guys maybe you could do a movie reaction to Notting Hill - I remember this song as part of the soundtrack
I can't hear this song without picturing Notting Hill. A fantastic movie!
My grandmother had just passed away from alzheimers disease when he released this song about his grandmother & it hit me hard,, Elvis Costello "Veronica"
A good version of this song by Elvis Costello, a really moving song. The original by Charles Azvanour is also excellent-Colin Ward
This was my first dance with my husband at our wedding in 2000. Love the song, love Elvis Costello, love my husband! Brought tears to my eyes, thank you. ❤❤❤
Beautiful song!
This was I and my husband’s wedding song. Still makes my heart flutter. ❤
Since you've done this song maybe you'd do the movie it is connected too ( you see it behind Elvis) - Notting Hill awesome movie.
Great reaction guys :)
This is one of my absolutely favorite Elvis Costello songs! His vibrato is beautiful, and I love the lyrics of this classic. It's so incredibly romantic. It's on the soundtrack for "Notting Hill," with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, which is a fun movie.
As far as another Costello song, try "Every Day I Write the Book," "Veronica," (which is a bittersweet song about his grandmother), "Pump It Up," (a banger) and, of course, "(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love, and Understanding," which you mentioned.
One of my favorite things I read was in a joint interview with Costello and Tom Waits (two of the most brilliant lyricists in the last 50 years) the interviewer asked them both "When you're working on lyrics, and you're missing a beat and can't think of what to put there, do you just do a "mmmm" or "hmmm"? Both of them looked at each other and said, "Never, if it's not needed you cut it out, or you weaken the power of the song."
Also check out his wife Diana Krall...another great female Canadian singer ✌❤
Always goosebumps every time hearing this song..elvis costello sang it perfectly, the music is soothing..
Definitely one of my favorite ballad of all time...
From the movie Notting Hill
She is one of my all-time favorite songs! It made my day that you reacted to it. It's from the film Notting Hill.
This is from the movie “Notting Hill”, have you had that on your film Channel? I think you would enjoy it!
Please add "Notting Hill" to your movie list. It's such a classic. This song was featured in this movie and was perfect for the scene.
OK, look… Elvis Costello has so much to listen to… He ranks in the top 5 my lifetime pantheon of great songwriters and performers up with Joni Mitchell, Brian Wilson, Laura Nyro, and Todd Rundgren. True genius. Your next Costello song should be “Watching the Detectives” if you want classic mid-70s Elvis, or “Veronica” if you want to rock late 80s Elvis. But there are dozens between those that still knock my socks off and make me smile as I bow down in amazement to his massively creative catalog.
Good to see that you're feeling better
One of my favorite songs by Elvis Costello is a song called "The Comedians"... This song was released originally in 1984, then later rewritten and re-released in 1987... To me, the ultimate version of this song has Roy Orbison singing it, from his 1988 (Filmed in late 1987) televised special concert, "Black and White Night"... Among the all-star musicians backing Roy on stage is Declan McManus... AKA... Elvis Costello... Others on stage with them include Brice Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Tom Waits, and K.D. Lang... And that is not counting all the celebrities in the audience that night, enjoying the show, including Kris Kristofferson and Patrick Swayze...
"The Comedians" is very dramatic and theatrical, both vocally, and instrumentally... But as I said earlier, There are multiple versions of this song, and they are NOT all alike... I am referring to Roy's version not only because I am an Orbison fan, but also because it is my personal favorite version of the song's lyrics as well... I also enjoy Elvis Costello singing that version as well, but finding Roy's version is WAY easier to find as opposed to sorting through all the Costello versions... All of which are worth the listen...
Beautiful song!! It's from the movie Notting Hill. Definitely check that one out! One of the best rom-coms!
Sweet movie 🥰
One of my favorites by him is "Angels want to wear my red shoes". For a bit of an upbeat crooner song of his try "Veronica".
He also did a wonderful cover of Penny Lane at the White House for Paul McCartney and President Obama.
Yes, him covering Paul's " Penny Lane " in front of Paul at the White House was a momentous event.
Very true, Veronica is absolutely wonderful, as is another song with a girls name as its title, Alison! Both well worth a listen. Loved his music since around '77 or '78 time, what an incredible voice he has! ❤
Love Elvis Costello! Thank you! ✌❤
One of my favorite songs of his, thank you for doing this.
Did you know that Elvis Costello just covered this beautiful song wrote by french singer/composer Charles Aznavour ?
The song was in the movie Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. It’s a brilliant film and it’s my favourite Rom Com movie ever. Definitely one to add to the list for your movie reactions😊
I love the Elvis Costello. He is by far one of my favorite all-time artists. You should try “every day I write the book“ or “the angels want to wear my red shoes”
And by the way why not listening the original --->>> ruclips.net/video/CE8SnoQDMgs/видео.htmlsi=5S7813qe619qwe81
This was the song I walked down the aisle to on my wedding day ❤ Love this song and movie
A crooner with great lyrics! He is known for his poetic lyrics. A great song like this is "God Give Me Strength" - it co written by Elvis and Burt Bacharach! Absolutely beautiful!
The original song was composed by French Charles Aznavour, the lyrics in english by South African Herbert Kretzmer --->>> ruclips.net/video/CE8SnoQDMgs/видео.htmlsi=5S7813qe619qwe81
One of my favorites of him. So beautiful ❤
Love this great cover of Charles Aznavour song I believe! You guys should react to “Notting Hill” the film this is from!
Terry Hall from 'The Specials' & Dave Stewart from 'The Eurythmics' had a band called 'Vegas' in 1992. They released a version and even got the original singer of the song, Charles Aznavour, to be in the video.
Yeah Elvis Costello does what he wants. A whole range of music. You need to try his song Veronica.
OMG what a beautiful song.
I've only ever heard Charles Aznavour sing it.
Elvis does a pretty good of covering it.
Great review, Jay and Amber. Thankyou so much for this ☺. Elvis Costello is fabulous, and surprising, not least because he married the wonderful Canadian jazz songstress/pianist Diana Krall and they are the parents of twins 🎉 ♥ 😊. Songs they have recorded together are sublime ♥. I'm not sure if you've reacted to Diana Krall's music, and if you haven't covered her yet, please listen to her version of Besame Mucho, Dancing in the Dark and Burt Bacharach's The Look of Love, because she is incredible ♥.
Please react to Watching The Detectives by Elvis Costello
"Red Shoes " and "Mystery Dance" are two fun songs from Elvis Costello. 🥰
I’ve literally just finished catching the end of Notting Hill on TV and came to RUclips and saw this was the latest reaction!
One of my favourite song and lyrics that always brings me memories of my Mum. This is a cover of Charles Aznavour's "Tous les visages de l'amour" (All The faces Of Love). The original genere of the song is half way between "chanson française" and a pop ballad.
Oh! It's in the soundtrack of "Nothing Hill", for your movie reactions!
I love Elvis! And, I adore this song. Its so beautiful. Oh, and a suggestion for Female Friday - his wife Diana Krall. She’s a throwback to the torch singers of old. She’s got such a throaty, velvety, honied voice. I’d recommend “Peel Me A Grape” but you can’t go wrong with almost anything of hers. Her duet with Ray Charles of “You Don’t Know Me” is sublime!
Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes is another fabulous Costello song!
elvis is one of the greats,as simple as that
Notting Hill...you MUST see this movie, such a wonderful movie with a beautiful story, laughter, and tears :) And I love this song so much as well. Every time I hear it (especially in the context of this movie) I get teary-eyed (happy tears) because it's just so simply beautiful!
I love Elvis Costello but I love 'Accidents Will Happen', 'Alison', 'Oliver's Army', 'Watching The Detectives', '(I Don't Want To Go To) & Chelsea', 'Peace, Love & Understanding'! All the above hits I have listed are well worth listening to and I my opinion even better than 'She'! I would also recommend one of his contemporaries, Joe Jackson who I think also has an incredible voice. Well worth a listen and a definite recommendation too. ❤️
Elvis's first slow song was a break-up tune, called 'Good year for the roses' back in the 80's, in a Country style, & confirmed his position as a 'jack of all trades' as far as musical genres go!!
Definitely one of the UK's greatest exports! 😀
Good stuff! I'm familiar with a fair amount of Elvis Costello's work, but I hadn't heard this one before.
I am NOT an Elvis Costello fan, but I LOVE this song! I first heard it in the film Notting Hill, which you should watch as it stars Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, and was blown away by the power of this song! So, so good!
Did you know that Elvis Costello just covered this beautiful song wrote by french singer/composer Charles Aznavour ?
Been an Elvis Costello fan since 1978, if you like this, you will cry at "You shouldn't look at me that way" :)
That is such a beautiful song. Gets me every time.
Top 10 of my favorite songs!!! Hidden gem!!!!
BTW, this song was taken from the soundtrack of Notting Hill. Originally sung by Charles Aznavour in 1974!
I saw Elvis live in Southern Calif a few months ago, he was fantastic, I was mesmerized.
I agree ith all of the other Elvis suggestions, but also want to add ...And In Every Home." Elvis is the best. Love Him.
Also please react to his and Tony Bennet’s duet version of They Can’t Take That Away from Me
He can really belt it out when he wants to. I saw him in concert when he was touring in support of the album "Imperial Bedroom" (so 1982 or 83) and he did an acapella encore that was wonderful.
elvis costello is excellent he can put his voice to almost anything. i recommend the song" i hope your happy now".
You should review all three versions of "I Hope You're Happy Now," from "Blood & Chocolate," the b-side of the "I Want You" 12" single, and the Rykodisc extra tracks version of "Goodbye Cruel World!"
There are a lot of great versions of Peace, Love and Understanding. I would recommend a live version from the David Letterman show. Elvis was guest hosting for Letterman that week and introduced himself. There is also a great live cover by Bruce Springsteen with John Fogerty, (Dixie) Chicks, Dave Matthews etc. But watch Elvis first.
So glad you got to this one. A beautiful Elvis tune from an awesome movie “Notting Hill” starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. You need to check it out on your movie channel. You would love it!
I LOVE Elvis Costello!! A friend of mine introduced me to his music in the 80’s and I’ve loved it ever since.
Also…the movie this is from, Notting Hill is WONDERFUL!! I’d love to see you guys watch it together. It’s a quirky British rom-com, but unlike any other I’ve seen. Stars Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. It’s a must-see!!
Beautiful!!!
Lovely lovely song. "NOTTING HILL"...A GREAT MOVIE FOR YOU TWO!
This is such a beautiful song. Never knew the artist was Elvis Costello. I don't know if it was written for this movie but it is such a perfect song. That is Julia Roberts in the vdeo. The movie is *"Nottinghill" starring Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman movie fame) and Hugh Grant. It is a Rom/Com. and very well done. It's also a movie about friends sticking together and having each other's backs. Please add this movie * "Nottinghill" to your to your list. It's a great one when you want something light, fun and entertaining.
The song wasn't written for the movie, though I can understand why you would think that ☺♥. It was recorded many years before the movie Notting Hill was made, by the French crooner Charles Aznavour ♥.
It's Notting Hill (two words) not Nottinghill (one word)
Such a beautiful song.
This is one of my favourite songs and one of the most romantic but underrated songs. Thanks for doing this guys.
Paul McCartney said writing songs with Elvis Costello was the closest to writing with John Lennon he’s experienced. “Veronica” is a song by both of them.
FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG WAS IN THE MOVIE NOTTINGHILL, SO SOULFUL!! YOU NEED TO SEE THAT MOVIE!
