- A legendary player on the court and a powerful voice for justice off the court, Bill Russell was an immense figure in the history of the NBA. As a cornerstone of the Boston Celtics dynasty of the 1960s, Russell helped lead his team to an unmatched eight straight championships and finished with a record eleven rings during his 13 year career. A transcendent player, Russell was a five time league MVP who revolutionized the sport with his abilities as a defender and rebounder. Russell was a barrier breaker who also was a leading voice in the struggle for civil rights and social justice.

I did get to see him play, and he embodied what a team sport should really be all about. Don't be fooled into
thinking he could not have scored 30 points a game if he wanted to, but the Celtics would not have won those
Championships. He was the absolute true GOAT for reasons that today's players can't even comprehend. I have been
blessed with being able to watch both Bill Russell and Tom Brady really show how a team sport is meant to be played.

Born in the 90s so didn't get to watch Bill play, however I remember being at a OKC Thunder game not too long after they got there and Bill Russell was at the game also. They showed him down by the court. Ever since then I say my favorite player I seen on the court in person is Bill Russell.

All my life I have always known of the sacrifice he had to endure to play the game he loved. No one in todays NBA understands that. We go through this life not knowing how his life changed and he became a different person because of it. He helped pave the way for change and equality. The world was different and it did not accept difference. I am so happy he helped all those after him. He is the most important basketball influence of all time.. there are others but because he overcame and used his influence there can never be anyone like him. Thank you for your love and support for all humanity

George Mikan was the original GOAT way before Russell..then it was Wilt..then it was Kareem..then it was MJ...Russell was never a GOAT. Great guy/person, great winner, good for his little era, but never a GOAT.
GOAT's don't average 15 points for their career on 42% shooting. Was the Ben Wallace/Rudy Gobert of his era. Those guys would've dominated and averaged 30-50 points and 25-35 rebounds back then. Same with Kwame and Javale McGee. Even the White Mamba Brian Scalabrine would've averaged 30-40 points back then, everyone would say that he was Dirk before Dirk and that he's one of the GOAT power forwards lol. That's how pathetic the 50s-60s era was. JJ Reddick is right, it was a horrific plumber era of basketball. Just painful to watch really. Tired of hearing about that era and the overrated players from it.

Guess some people don’t respect all generations of basketball? People say Bill Russell played against plumbers and fireman, but that’s not entirely true. Let me list out some names: Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Earl Monroe, Elvin Hayes, Willis Reed, Jerry Lucas, Walt Frazier, Hal Greer, Paul Arizin, and Walt Bellamy. This is just a few and for more information, search these legends up. Some may be familiar but many are underrated. Anyways, no point in making a Kobe fan understand 😂. Basketball legends like Kobe know Bill Russell’s impact on the game. Just because he played in the 60s, that doesn’t mean his accolades are worthless. 11 championships is still 11 championships. That’s not the greatest just in basketball, that’s the greatest in sports history. If you can’t respect basketball from previous generations, you are not a true fan of basketball. Being a fan of basketball means you respect all generations of basketball and understand the history of it.
