Have I seen a single episode of GG? No. Will I still watch Julia talk about a spin off I won’t understand? Yup.
Likewise, still haven't seen a single frame of the original series, but you'll bet that I'll click for Julia! 💜
much thanks for the loyalty :))
SAME
I find it hilarious that Dan dated his girlfriend's mother in "John Tucker must Die!" 😂
and at some point his own step-mother! it's all very confusing
...what
thank you! i thought i was the only one who got this
That’s messed up, huh? Better than dating his brother, John, who not only cheated on each of his girlfriends, but with a woman married to a wealthy husband, got the woman’s mother in law ran over, and then became a lawyer who tired or defended a woman (forget what side he was on) for talking about god in the classroom.
(Desperate Housewives & God’s Not Dead 2 (which is literal trash; not a good religious movie).
they never dated in the movie tho
Cue flashbacks of PLL’s Ravenswood…yikes
Honestly I really like that show! I was so upset when I didn’t get picked up for another season
I actually sort of liked that show maybe solely because I thought Tyler Blackburn was really hot (though maybe not the most dynamic actor). But the writing was mehhh
It should have been a standalone, I think more people would have seen it. Had a great horror vibe.
@@thedarkphoenix1640 Maybe I should give it a try! I mostly meant the weird way Caleb left the main show, it felt awkwardly done
@@fronk140 It did happen in PLL first. And the creator probably liked the setting they created for Ravenswood so much and the vibe it had, that she wanted to make it longer.
You had me at "Armie Hannibalecter"
Ditto, I laughed more than I probably should have! 🤣
I came here to say this but….
Armiebalecter
To be fair, the Carrie Diaries was based off of a series of books written by the original author of Sex and the City.
i didn't even know sex and the city was a book (☉_☉)
@@juliacudney me neither but it makes a lot of sense that it was now that i think about it 😭💀
Oh I feel so strongly about this bookseries and I cannot believe that it was written by someone who was involved with the original show! Maybe I'm still so mad because I read the books when I was 14 and in an obsessive Sex and the city phase but those books where BAD! They tell a completely different backstory than what was hinted in the series. As for example she lives with her father and two sisters and her mother has died while in the series her father left her with her mother when she was a young girl... I just remember feeling very insulted as a reader by this poor research 😅
@@juliacudney I've never watched any episodes of the TV show but watched the movies a couple of times but I thought the books were featured in the movies. Theres a clip where she adds her books to her series on the bookshelf and theres like 4 of them? Carrie is writing the actual books is based off... right?
@@Nina-pr6dt The Carrie Diaries are following the Sex And The City BOOK, not the series. You can guess by the way you can stand Carrie without wanting another book Carrie to take care of her.
Lily's character is possibly the most disappointing in the show... like any self realisations she has in early seasons about how she treats her daughter, or how she acts in romantic relationships, are just squashed for further plotlines later on.
Omg I noticed this.
I never registered the flashback episode as a secret pilot. Only after I never saw other flashback episodes in the series I was like well that was weird
what annoys me about backdoor pilots is the wasted potential, bc sometimes the idea is good but the execution is terrible, or because they don't really believe in it, they make no effort. like there is a backdoor pilot in sabrina the teenage witch about sabrina's cousin going to a school for delinquent witches, and the concept is great, but the story was subpar and the cast was like yikes.
Is this from chilling adventures or the original sitcom?
@@fronk140 It's from the original 90's sitcom, which would have starred Melissa Joan Hart's sister Emily as Sabrina's cousin Amanda. Even as a child, I was confused as to why the show suddenly introduced these characters we had mostly never met before.
The Gossip Girl reboot/not-a-reboot is much like Bridgerton in that I'm not interested in watching it, but I'm very interested in Julia's thoughts on it.
I’m not sure anyone anywhere likes back door pilots, but if they do, I never want to meet them. Gilmore Girls had one with Jess going to meet his dad in California. Terrible. I also think that one Stranger Things episode with the other Numbers was a back door lowkey pilot. I’m an incredibly invested show viewer who will drop a show the minute I no longer care, so I’m definitely not the audience for such schemes.
Another show that had ideas for back door spin-offs was supernatural. They had one for somewhere in season 9 (possibly episode 11) called bloodlines. Terrible idea and it got canceled anyways. In the shows 13th season they had an episode called wayward sisters which was going to lead into a spin-off. It was actually a really good idea and people liked the characters already, but it just wasn’t picked up. Fast forward to now, the show has ended 8 months ago already and there is a new spin off that has been proposed. It’s about the parents of the two main characters Sam and Dean and it takes place before they were born. I think it’s a horrible idea since no one even liked the parents that much and it was super poorly received by fans. Anyways I know it didn’t relate to your comment at all but seeing Gilmore Girls mentioned reminded of Jared Padalecki which always brings me to supernatural
@@Ella-fv4hm i remember bloodlines and it was soo bad because it made no sense whatsoever, also if i remember correctly it was about a family of vampire hunters, which was just another show with vampires, nothing special about it
@@Ella-fv4hm ET TU, BRUTE?
@@oppakunn328 oh no don’t start with that lmao biggest L for Padalecki this year
@@Ella-fv4hm i was just thinking about this, the spn prequel is so pointless given the fact that, as julia mentioned, we already know where the characters will end up (dead!), therefore there’s really no sense of intrigue for prior fans
i love hearing summaries of random gossip girl plotlines, reminds of how insane it all was
I wanted to watch Lily and Rufus fall in love the first time that's ALL
same, i thought that was where it was going and was actually disappointed when i realized they weren't gonna show us that at all :(
Pretty Little Lairs had one called Ravenswood (which was really odd since they took one of the fan favorite characters (made for the show that wasn’t in the books) Caleb out to make the main character of a show everyone was peeved off about). Ravenwoods in the PLL episode wasn’t bad, but it sucked it was made to push out another one of the many one season shows ABC Family (now freeform) that ended before it really started. I think they have more one season stinkers than Riverdale has off the wall, batshit crazy twists that make no sense nor goes anywhere.
I think this 80’s throwback should have been throughout the show rather than it’s own show (give Lily more background and to give other cast members some days off).
Have you seen the reboot? It’s really good and the characters are really different. I also like the more mature tone.
I watched the Carrie Diaries by itself too and was so upset when I realized that Sebastian and Carrie weren't gonna end up together :(
Me too! I liked it! But I think it may be because I never watched the original show.
Another issue with backdoor pilots was the immediate disappointment of waiting a whole week for a new episode of my favorite show only to find THIS nonsense instead. During the days of actually watching stuff on TV instead of streaming it would suck when I was super invested in a show and finally got a new episode and it was a completely unrelated piece of nonsense. At least streaming in hindsight its easy to skip to the next episode. I'm automatically going to hate the backdoor pilot because it SQUANDERED one of the episode slots that my actual show had to offer.
(happened to me with Supernatural: Bloodlines, aka the worst episode of television ever. Bones when they tried to make their godawful Louisiana murder mystery show happen, etc.)
yeah its like a promise unfulfilled, which ALREADY sets u up for disappointment….like it doesnt matter how good the thing is, it’s still a disappointment from what u were expecting so its just setting itself up to fail
@@crstph Exactly. Not only did it deprive me of my expected show, now I have this shoddy facsimile to deal with AND I (the target audience) am already predisposed to hate it because of that.
The Nanny episode where they're at a beauty salon with the blandest characters. Ugh!
@@WinterWind You're bringing up memories I thought long since buried! I totally remember that episode and I remember being so confused as a child. What is up with this plot? Did they lose access to the main house set? Why do I care about any of these people? Then they were never seen or heard from again....
i remember not knowing what a back door pilot was when i watched bloodlines, and i was so fucking confused as to what was happening lol
I love your voice. It’s so soothing and easy to listen to
Neon lights and electronic music is what's keeping the 80's alive.
Stranger Things brought a new wave of 80's nostalgia.
I remember being SO confused watching that episode, because I had thought Rufus would be in it, and when Owen was introduced as someone she was interested in only for him to be dropped and never mentioned again I was even more confused. I just kept going “what was the purpose of him being there??” It being a potential pilot for a spin-off makes that make more sense now.
i'm not joking when i say i think about valley girls and what could have been EVERY DAY
i'm sorry for getting distracted but your hair is so cute
edit: sis you are cute, end of story
I mean I had to find that poll and vote, Krysten Ritter is the best period
"Hollywood please relinquish me from the 80's!--I seem to have gotten sidetracked" No you're right & you should say it
Finally someone that shares the same feeling of tiredness towards 80's. Like the aesthetic is pretty but it so overdone
This is a completely foreign idea to me wow how exciting
We have the same name. Just one letter difference. Mine is Joshua Dickinson. Anyway have a good day 👍
Fun fact - 'The Carrie Diaries' was made in direct contrast to 'Sex and the City' and was based to be closer on the books, hence it being its own alternate (better IMO) universe with a single widowed father & little sister vs. Carrie being an only child of a single mom, etc.
Also this pilot was....ok? it didn't do anything and by this point I didn't at all like Lily or root for her lol
OK, but the Gilmore girls' backdoor pilot for Jess and his dad, "Here Comes the Son" was amazing.
Was it amazing or were we all just in love with jess and wanted the best for him aka leaving rory
I didn't really like it. Yeah, I like Jess and he's super hot, but I hated the episode. You know how there are characters that just don't work as protagonists? I feel like he's one, there's just not much there, you know? He was charming as a love interest, he worked, even on standalone moments with Luke, but as a full on protagonist, I didn't feel it. It's just my opinion though, I hate spin-offs in general, because I get a weird feeling, like spin-offs feel familiar but so unfamiliar at the same time, you know that there's something missing and it feels wrong.
Haha I hate that episode. Just watched the series again and I almost audibly groaned when it started and I remembered that it's a backdoor pilot.
@@hopetherespudding actually u may be right 😭 might have to go back and re-watch it objectively
No, not really, no... It bore me, ive seen it like 3 times I dont even remember the ending
I recently got into PJO, and was wondering if you could do a video on the horrible things that call themselves the Percy Jackson movies?
i've never read the books, actually, but i'm going to get on that because a video about disloyal adaptation is in pre-production here in my bedroom, and i feel like those movies are a must for the topic
@@juliacudney yes!!! Oh my God you have no idea! Thank you for responding😁 I really recommend the books, they're amazing!
*there is no movie in ba sing se*
wait wrong franchise
@@juliacudney Rick Riordan actually put the letter he wrote to the people making the movie on his website and it's the funniest thing I've ever read with my own two eyes. He really tried his best to set them up for success, but no one cared to listen to his concerns and he could have saved the franchise
My favorites! I can’t wait for the tv series of Disney +! Redemption!
The video is brought to you by me (Julia)
I love the Taylor Swift cardigan in the background
Julia, you look so beautiful in that fit wow!!!!
Im laughing a little too much at Fallice 😭
“Armie Hannibal Lectet” you did not 💀
The backdoor pilot was my favourite episode of gossip girl I'm so sad they didn't make it a show
(Possibly because I love the two main actresses so much)
“armie hammiebal lecter” STOP OMG
The plot of the spin off is eerily reminiscent of the first book of the book series "the A-List;" blonde perfect NY rich girl is tired of being in NY and decides to move in with her LA dad and she has a sister in LA too, antics ensue.
I loved that whole episode of Young Lily. I was hoping for more random flashback episodes. I haven’t seen the reboot and I doubt I will ever
I love Brittany Snow and actually really wanted to see Valley Girls become a show on the CW at this time this episode of GG aired
One backdoor pilot I really like is in the 100 because it's a backstory episode in a show that desperately needs backstory
Is the 100 spinoff happening? I really liked the backdoor pilot they had about the apocalypse (the first one) and all the cult stuff.
I didn't know Chloe from Pitch Perfect starred in Gossip Girl
Or Chloe from Dont Trust the B in Apt 23 lmao.
ruclips.net/video/MiC9X_MoE1M/видео.html
the gilmore girls jess back door pilot is SO FUCKING BAD i very much understand why it didn’t get picked up
I loved that episode so much, wished it became an spin off
Girl you should watch Hellcats, and do a review/dissertation/podcast (it was cancelled in 1st season). It seems so much up your alley.
I love this show so much I've seen it 3+ times over. I'd love if she did a series on teen tv shows cancelled too soon
Everyone is coming in with the memories in these comments. Hellcats first half of the season had me hooked. I seem to remember the second half was a bit draggy with the prison storyline or something.
@@kadyg8041 Girl same, every once in a while I just get an urge to see it. But as @C mentioned, I don't remember the second half as well as the first lol
I loved hellcats. Really likes Ashley's character. Forgot her name. But she was a nice person with complicated family history. Could have been a bitch but wasnt
Isn't that the homophobic show?
I love being this early!! Thank you for your videos Julia! I really enjoy them 💗
thank youuu for watching
gossip girl the book series had two spinoffs: one with triplets and another about jenny in boarding school
I would have definitely been interested in a Jenny in boarding school spin off back in the day for sure!
memory unlocked…the boarding school spin-off books with jenny were so goood
I thought you were going to be talking about It Girl or the Carlyles (spin-offs to the Gossip Girl books) but this was super interesting too. I hate backdoor pilots because still developing plotlines just stop to introduce us to characters we don't know or care about. I think I would prefer this method because we still have characters we're invested in in the story.
I want it girl content!
Blast from the past, I loved The It Girl books. Easy the bad boy, Jenny being who she was, Tinsley the popular returning mean girl. Wish that had been spun into a show.
i never watched 1 ep of this show nor do i plan to, but its julia so i have to watch this vid anyways: the sequel
I tried watching gossip girl but it was too much. I got four episodes in and so much stuff happened in those four episodes I felt like I had already seen a full season
"Armie Hammerbal Lecter" BAHAHA 😭😭
I couldn’t agree more! Lily’s still a mystery because we never knew the woman Rufus fell in love with 30+ years ago. I’d watch the prequel.
That whoever young lily episode was enjoyable but I could honestly never see it going anywhere bc it’s like you already know the ending of the series so in that sense what’s the point of the story. Generally tho I’m not a fan of backdoor pilots cause for me it just feels like the writers aren’t confident enough in their own work to create a new fan base and are trying to leech off the established fan base of the old show. Also they never provide an accurate representation of the spin-off show, The Originals is much better than backdoor pilot that was given to them. My unpopular opinion about that show tho: I think TVD is better than TO for the simple fact of its rewatchability factor. The Originals is better in SOME aspects and defo has a more mature feel which is welcomed but ngl I could barely even start s5 esp because Julie Plec is just a bad writer who doesn’t know how to write well for longer than 2/3 seasons at a time… but that’s a rant for another time.
Did brittany snow really think lily was supposed to be in her early 30s???
Lily in the main show not brittany snow lily
Do we even have to mention the atrocity that was Stranger Things' attempt at a backdoor pilot in season 2??
bestie i am HERE
The GG flashback episode was so unbelievably random, like what was that?! 😂
THE ORIGINALS WAS AMAZING OKAY PLEASE JUST GIVE IT A CHANCE
Supernatural tried to do 2 back door pilots that I know of, they didn’t work out though
I've learnt to recognise backdoor pilots. Most crime shows i watch did it (Bones with that weird episode, the Criminal Minds and CSIs). I am not the biggest fans myself.
just got home from work to this....tysm
I can hear you chat endlessly about gossip girl despite me never having seen even one episode of it lol
At first I thought it was lily and Dan making out and I was like “is this where Kate and Scott are in their relationship”
Honestly, Lily fell from my good graces in the later seasons. She did things I did not approve of for reasons I couldn't understand especially after she was portrayed as a level-headed mother figure for the entire thing. So her story doesn't really interest me anymore.
But Bart Bass?
Some of my favorite episodes involve Blair and Chuck running around trying to figure out what he was up too. I didn't feel satisfied with the ending of that storyline and I have questions about how Carter was involved and what exactly his job was in the Club. And how the Club operated, was it really just a "gentleman's club" or something more sinister?
I'd watch a spin off of that.
More specifically I'd watch a spinoff of Blair and Chuck's son, investigating his grandfather's life, because drama and also it's been a few years.
i can tell i’m not gonna like the reboot
*yes!!* i just know :/
Me too, we'd have been far better off with this spinoff than the reboot!
i had neutral feelings for the first episode but i’m going to try and hold on until maybe ep 5 to see if i begin to enjoy it more.
you: making great points throughout the video
me: cannot stop thinking about the name lily of the valley as the name
indeed... bait and switch is correct. Sneaky ol' backdoor pilot *shakes fist at air*
In my defense, Gossip Girl wasn't on Canadian Netflix but Riverdale was so... I mean I don't watch Riverdale anymore, but Gossip Girl didn't even get the opportunity to try and sway me to its side since it wasn't there.
Gossip girl was on canadians Netflix! That's how I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago
Gossip Girl was on Canadian Netflix they only took it off recently
im pretty sure we're supposed to be reliving the 00s right now!
funny how julia posts this video as i’ve been rewatching gossip girl lately
idk about the originals though because all of season 3 of tvd was kinda their season
Ngl still like/watch riverdale. Love falice/bughead. Valley Girls would've been a good spinoff
You take so long to get to the point. You should've just written an essay, not a video.. Sorry, just my feedback.
The way that I’ve been looking for your channel but couldn’t remember the name FOR A YEAR
NOT ARMIE HANNIBAL LECTER 💀
girl PLEASE watch and make a video about Young Royals its soooo good!! + they show real skin details (acne and acne scars) and have a pretty diverse cast (2nd lead male is Hispanic, lead female role is black and "plus-size" (according to TV logic)). Theres not a lot of discussion videos on it rn so i'm STARVING for some.
julia i know taylor swift re-released another album ans you probably fighting in war to get vynils but i miss you please post soon... i'll even watch a video about "you"
I remember my first Greys watchthrough I didnt realize those episodes were a backdoor pilot for Private Practice
but honestly i wish id stayed ignorant, private practice is not very good
Obsessed with this channel! Your voice is so relaxing and I love your videos 💞 also you’re really pretty
I liked the Carrie Diaries but I’ve also never seen Sex in the City so have nothing to compare it to
Sex and the City still holds up and has looks, it’s worth watching. :)
“Back when she looked like Brittany Snow” GIRL I-
My parents like the Chicago series (PD/Med/Fire) and one was basically the pilot for Chicago:Law but it was actually interesting. I was surprised.
I agree 100% there's no point in having a backdoor pilot for a spinoff of characters that are already established I think creators should just full on make the spinoff with no relation of the original characters or establish them in the first show to get a feel of them then make a spinoff based on that or save everyone time and just it the heck alone
its a tragedy that one of the only good things would have been all the girls with big hair, even perms! That is how all the stylish people were wearing their hair
the originals is soo bad. even as a lover of trash tv i couldn't get through the 1st season
i really like barry allen’s “backdoor pilot” appearance in arrow cause it flowed so well into that season’s storyline that i didn’t really think of the prospect of a flash tv series when i saw it for the first time
Season 3 Episode 10 & Season 7 Episode 16 of Buffy but it’s done in such a great way!!
i mean seeing the casts play it so beautifully was enough to make me interested
I should have known there would be a julia cudney video about Gossip Girl right around the time I found out there is an extension of Gossip Girl. Can't wait to watch it despite never seeing Gossip Girl!
was not expecting you to bring up PT but it’s actually like a really good comparison
In the GG episode Cece told Lily that she paid off Owen and Shep to not see Lily anymore!
you gotta do the reboot that just came out!!! i think i might like it!
Tv show Bones and the show the finder!
Excuse me imma need a 360 of your haircut it looks so beautiful
I saw Krysten Ritter and loved it
Instead of gossip girl you should cover Young Royals it features actors that actually look like real people and is kind of a cinderella retelling
VALLEY GIRLS WAS MY FAVE EPISODE i'm so happy it's getting talked about
there was a backdoor pilot in the nanny (season 3 i think?) about a random woman that fran meets who’s an aspiring actress and fran helps her get a job at a salon or something? idk but from there the whole episode is devoted to these characters we’ll never see again cos it was awful lmfao it took place in the salon and it had stereotypical gay and asian characters cos the 90’s lol and there was an annoying kid as well cos, again, the 90’s! nobody had any chemistry and it was trash.
So glad too see someone else remembers this. I just mentioned this in another comment. What an awful episode that was. Not interesting in plot, the characters were bland but also caricatures, and there was little to none of the familiar stuff you tuned in for. I have the DVDs and always skip that episode now.
@@WinterWind i binged the whole series on hbo recently and had no idea it even existed lol i was so thrown off when the episode shifted focus completely. took me a minute to realize “ohhh backdoor pilot” lol
we do NOT acknowledge s9 of scrubs in this house
i loooooved carrie diaries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you Buffy the Vampire Slayer and review it? It’s arguably one of the best teen dramas ever!!
i always more intrigued by the parents' backstory and lore than the show
I thoroughly enjoy every time you upload. Thank you, Julia!
I’d love a video by you on New Girl !!!
Her hair is always fantastic
