The drain plug for the transmission is directly under the seat !!!! and above the drawbar and would hold 6 gallons of oil (preferably 80/90 wt) and the filler/dipstick is to the right of the gearshift with the big breather on it. The HYDRAULIC system has two drain plugs....one under the clutch pedal and the other on the RH side of the sump that the hyd pump draws oil from. Filler/dipstick is the the left of the gearshift and uses universal hydraulic oil/fluid and holds 6 1/2 gallons to the upper mark on the dipstick (do not use the lower mark). All three drain plugs take 1 1/8" wrench....
Took this from the Allis Chalmers Forum website. You may already know about....but thought I would pass it along to be safe. There is a member there named Dr. Allis. If you ever have a question about an Allis Chalmers...he is the Doctor. He helped me on my D19 and D17 series IV. You got a nice looking narrow front 17. Good luck with the old girl.

Overfilling can cause it to leak and wastes oil, proper level is for the hydraulic pump.
You would be amazed by how the gears churn and distribute the oil during operation.

simply invest in hand gear oil pump that fits 5 gal bucket and simply pump in , will last you a lifetime , about 25.00 dollars

That's a great idea. I didn't know something like that existed. How long does it take to pump out 5 gallons of gear oil?

      Quarter quart a pump

You violated the first rule of Tractor Club. Always change the fluids on a new old tractor.

I have a 1 gallon metal oil can with a long flexible spout , maybe 10-12”, that I use to oil in my d17 and other tractors

The engine takes 7 quarts. Make sure the filter is not the pleated paper type but the stuffed cotton type. For a while six was building them wrong. Later D17s took a different filter

I will fill gearbox with disel and move tractor lightly back and forth to flush all the rest of bad oil in it, before putting new oil in

next time u do a oil change like that dump a few gallons of diesel in the case and let it clean all that sludge out also i think the final drives have a drain hole on them? i use 4 liter soda bottles for funnels another type of funnel i recommend are surplus military funnels theyre steal 1 liter with a flexible hose. i bought a bunch on ebay for about 4$ each a while back

I've pulled the gear cover for repair and then rinsed the transmission with diesel using a hand pump sprayer but running diesel oil and taking a trip around the yard works best. If you pull the cover there are two special shouldered bolts that go in specific spots so the gear cover is aligned properly

Not long , has a 36” rubber hose on it with a curved metal nozzle on end with about a 1/2 diameter. Napa has them but more expensive.

Fire up the flux-core welder and make a custom funnel to fill it.

I wonder if you could have used a windshield washer fluid jug as a funnel by cutting it in half?
Also I was wondering if you are going to change the final drive oil?
    Take care my friend!!!

Pour the bucket with the spout at the top it won’t chug

There is another bolt on the left side between the seat and front housing that you need to be putting transmission fluid in. You completely missed that bolt and fluid.
