This book is a work of fiction, though it's based on my own experiences when growing up In Middlesbrough during the 1960s. This was the time of the Windrush era when immigrants from the Caribbean came to the UK, to undertake a variety of jobs to help rebuild the nation. After WWII. The book takes in the difficulties that the immigrants faced due to their ethnicity and the colour of their skin.
SYNOPSIS: My dad, John Fittler was a racist as was his father before him. Dad always said, to anyone who would listen, that if he had been born in Alabama or Mississippi in the USA, he would have been in the Klu Klux Klan, burning crosses and lynching niggers. Unfortunately for him, he was born in Middlesbrough in the county of Yorkshire in England. I started my life as a racist; I had little choice, as growing up that was all that my father talked about, every conversation always seemed to revolve around or relate to black or Asian people. After the Second World War black and ethnic minorities from Commonwealth countries were now starting to arrive in Britain, driving buses, working in the shops, or working on building sites building new housing estates in the town, there were even two Pakistanis working on the docks, though thankfully not alongside my dad as they worked on the opposite shift to him. Some immigrants who arrived in the country with some money decided to go into business and opened up shops, restaurants, or other businesses. I had little to do with any immigrants, the ones that were in our school I avoided, as did most of the other white kids in the school and the black and Asian kids tended to stick together as there was safety in numbers. In June 1959 there was a turning point in my life, an event that would transform the way that I would view the world and live my life when Winston and Kaleisha Brown, two kids from Jamaica moved into a council house on Granville Street in the Cannon Street area of town, just two doors down from the Fittler house.

Growing up in Brighton in the 50s and 60s I never ever saw any foreigners . Going back in present day it’s difficult to find kith and kin fellow citizens. My father took the family to southern Africa to improve our lives . That predictably ended in disaster . Ended up in New Zealand and Australia 🇦🇺 but that cannot be the last move due to the high cost of retirement living . Thailand 🇹🇭 could be the answer .

Hi. Growing up in Middlesbrough back in the 50s and 60s there were many people arriving from commonwealth countries but they were different from today's illegal migrants as they appreciated the opportunity and rolled their sleeves up and worked hard to improve their lives. There were very few handouts and they definitely were not put up in hotels. They were expected to work for a living. Regarding the high cost of living in the west. If I had stayed in Australia when I retired my life would be very different as my pension would hardly cover day to day necessities and there wouldn't be much leftover to enjoy my retirement.
      Cheers
