I started this video thinking "A-ha! Let's see Hammerhead come to grief using Academy's awful decals!". And you have no issues at all and produce a show-stopper! *llordlloyd bows down*
Lol, In general I haven't had too much of an issue with Academy decals, maybe I've gotten lucky.
@@HammerheadModelMakingWere they Cartograph decals?
A masterful build of this P-51C. One of the best 1/72 scale builds I've seen. Glad I subscribed, I wouldn't want to have missed this one. I love your build philosophy!!!!
Wow, thank you for the kind words. This kit was a blast, I would like to try out the newer Arma Hobby release to see how it compares. Thank you for your subscription!
Very nice build. Very good voice-over and video production too.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Hiya man great build, going to make this kit next week I've made loads of 51Ds but never had a 51C or an Academy before so thanks for the tip for the tail fitting, you couldn't have uploaded this at a more perfect time nice one.
I'm glad I didn't delay this video any longer then! Good luck with your build!
Excellent work! I'm new to the hobby and this is what I'm building now.
Awesome! Welcome to the hobby!
im going to be building the italeri f51-d from the korean war so this has helped me with a few ideas for it so thank you and great work.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching and good luck with your build!
As for masking off the Canopy, may I suggest that you look for Canopy Masks by Eduard and other companies.
They are a time saver and made to fit that area you don't want to be painted.
Yeah, this was an experiment that didn't quite pan out. One which I will be avoiding in the future.
Great effort on a 1/72 scale aircraft
Many thanks!
you really gave me the motivation to finally make my first model (i was gunna do it anyways i just wanted to give you a comment to help with the algorithm)
@@jakecameron9556 I’m really excited for you!! Just remember mistakes are ok and that’s how we learn, best of luck to you staring out this journey!
@@HammerheadModelMaking yea ok the model i have ready for my first try is the exact oone in this video as well so ive gotten some tips already for it thanks alot :)
@@jakecameron9556 Fantastic!
Excellent video. Fantastic job. Looks really nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for this I’m just adding 1/72 modelling to my layout and just got a couple of 1/72 mustangs this really helped 👌😎 Fred
No problem 👍
Very nice build. I've built the same kit but the other yellow tail version. I brush paint my kits, so you can imagine, the metal finish and the yellow can really test your patience. Academy plastic is very good, the decals are another story. I remember building the Typhoon, and when it came to the decals I kept looking at the kit and the trash can more than once. Great build. Greetings from Portugal.
Hi Ernesto! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, Academy decals can be hit or miss. Fortunately for this mustang, they weren't too bad.
Just found this video, what a stunning build! Saw this kit in a local model shop just a few days ago and I am going back to get the kit. Have subscibed. Thanks.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I wish you luck on your build. It's a rather simple kit, but it turns out a nice looking Mustang when you are done! Thanks for the sub!!
Great work such detail is amazing plus all "fun facts"
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Looks awesome, congrats on the build mate!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful model, watching and learning your techniques.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent build..! Million thanks for sharing..
My pleasure!
Nice job on the kit and great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great looking Mustang! The photo etch in the cockpit really enhances the look. I have yet to use photo etch in this scale. Take care! Drew
Thanks Drew! I don't often use full cockpit photoetch in 72nd scale, but I'm glad I did with this kit.
Brett
This looks like a great little slump buster! Just what I need! Thanks!
And it isn't too expensive either!
Fantastic work!
Thank you!
Magnificent work
Thank you so much 😀
Nicely done. Would sometime like to see your rendition of an RAF Mustang III variant with a Malcohm Hood canopy.
I guess I'll have to add that to the wishlist!
I have this model! I’m actually gonna start building it after I go to hobby lobby
Awesome! Good luck on your build!
Great video - thank you!
Glad you liked it!
awesome work
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant job, it turned out amazing!
Much appreciated!
Nicely done. I have built some academy kits and the decals are very thin.
Yes they are!
I agree, olive drab looks better than flat black!
Thanks!
That's a very rare P-51C-2 notice the additional dorsal fin structure at the rudder base. I first noticed that in a photo, when the ("yellow checker tail") 325th fighter group began to received their P-51s'
Correct. There weren’t very many B/C mustangs with the fin fillet.
I enjoyed it! 😊👍
I'm glad! Thanks for watching!
When you do NMF paint schemes, how do you prevent the tape from pulling off your metallic paint around the areas you masked off for subsequent painting such as the anti-glare panel on front or the vertical stabilizer?
I think the biggest factor is prepping the surface prior to laying down the metallic paint. Ensuring you have a good primer base that is clean from oils and dust and fully cured. But, it really just comes down to experimenting with combinations of metallic paint and primers. I used Alclad metallic paints on this one which are lacquer paints and can be quite robust and I've used Vallejo metallics paints as well with good results. Also, allow a good amount of time for the metallic paint to cure before doing any masking, I generally wait 24 hours. Hope this helps.
cool! ! ! I love B/C
Thanks for watching!
Incrível! 🌟👏
Thank you!
Amazing as usual!! just one quick question why did you switch the the Vallejo gloss instead of staying with the Aquagloss?
Thanks Matt, I ran out of my Aqua Gloss and MRS is out of stock right now.
Just a comment
for the algorithm
Appreciated.
A fine kit but the one weakness to my eyes is the wing, which seems too wide/broad in chord - that is, wing leading edge to trailing edge. A few minutes with a sanding stick can improve the look of the wing though. 👍
Interesting, I'll compare it do some of my D model mustangs.
Nice job. What glue did you use with your photo etch?
Thank you, for the PE I am using a Thick CA glue, it gives me a little bit of working time before it sets.
@@HammerheadModelMaking Thanks I'll try it.
I've built this kit too, in the end it looks like an early Mustang should, but i found two important things are wrong at this Academy kit. The propeller is too small in diameter, and the landing gear looks somewhat wrong at the finished model, maybe the legs a bit too long. I couldn't figure out what exactly is wrong with the landing gear, but it looks odd.
Interesting, I didn't notice that, but I'll have another look.
@@HammerheadModelMaking compare with front view photos and drawings of the B/C Mustang. I'm a Mustang buff since 40 years, built a whole bunch of that plane in all scales up to flying RC models. 😉
Excellent build. The only constructive criticism that I’d dare to express: the exhaust stains on the fuselage sides look too grainy, IMHO.
Thank you for the feedback, I really do appreciate it. I dont think my airbrush was thinned properly, I think that is what gave the grainy result. I'll work on fixing that for future builds. Thanks for watching!!
Can I use water to thin down Vallejo for my airbrush?
yes, you can, its not the best to use, but it will work.
@@HammerheadModelMaking thank you
