Listen | PGMOL releases VAR audio from Liverpool's disallowed goal against Spurs

- The PGMOL has released audio conversations between Video Assistant Referee officials laying bare the panic that set in after Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongly disallowed during Liverpool’s defeat at Tottenham.
Var Darren England is heard saying “oh f---” seconds after play restarted, having mistakenly thought Diaz’s goal had been given by the on-field officials.
England checked for offside thinking the goal had been given, as said check complete after replays showed Diaz was clearly onside. On-pitch referee Simon Hooper took that as his cue to resume play with a Spurs free-kick.
England then repeats that he “cannot do anything” once play was restarted as colleagues urge that the game be paused.
Liverpool were sent the audio by the Premier League on Tuesday.

They sounded like they are more afraid of delaying the game than correcting the wrong decision.
why would they be. I remember VAR in other league, even the game is done and everyone went back to the dressing room. They still do VAR check for a potential penalty and the game have to be taken back.

The VAR guy sounds too much like he doesn’t want the operator to finish checking the lines… why does he repeatedly tell the ref “check complete” before the operator is done?

How do VAR & asst VAR don't know the on field decision ? And after the replay operator remind them 0:52 they seem don't connect to what happen on the pitch. Absolutely crazy. Now we really have question about the integrity of the Premier League. I smell something fishy here. The replay operator was the only honest person in that room.
I'm not sure how bad I imagined this to be, but the actual reality is at least ten times worse. How have they managed that? Why is it so hard to just say: ''Check complete, he's onside''? All of this would've been avoided. That VAR referee can't have been paying any attention to what's going on.
Why don't they just say what the decision should be: 'offside' or 'goal'? Saying 'check complete' just adds a layer of ambiguity.
It's no wonder things go wrong with this chaotic style of communication, people talking over each other, other people not hearing each other- what a mess. The system of communication needs to be improved.
Right on. It's a complete mess. How can they get it right with that chaos.
The ref spent a lot of time on checking Curtis Jones' fault for potential red card offence. And he was wrong about that decision IMO so he may have concluded 'I'm not gonna waste more time on penalising Liverpool again. Let's stick to the offside decision and we can continue the game."
Don't want to see that Simon Hooper referee ever again in charge of a Premier League and any international football game. 😠
I used to do some stagehand work running spotlights and comms are always going to seem chaotic to someone not involved. But, even if people are talking over each other, the intentions and message should always be clear. 'Yes/no' can always be ambiguous. They need to switch to answering with statements instead. For example, to a question to 'is it not offside?', the answer shouldn't be 'yes/no', it should be 'confirmed onside/offside'. My wife is a nurse, and in the medical field they use closed-loop communication (repeating last order) to minimize any mistakes when communicating orally. This should be an easy fix with some training. Whether the PGMOL will actually implement it, is another question. I hope Liverpool follows up on the suit and we get some changes. As a Spurs fan, very disappointed in this game. Huge respect for Liverpool for playing how they did given the awful circumstances.
Replay operator literally told everyone they were wrong after what sounded like the team thought the initial call on the pitch was onside. Once they realized the on the pitch was offside, they all froze like 'that's the wrong decision.' That's just pathetic all round.

So the var says "ok, perfect" meaning the goal was ok, perfect and the ref understands that his offside call was "ok, perfect".
Then restarts game and further intervention by var is impossible.
That's why people should learn to speak English.
The only competent official was the replay operator, the rest acted very suspiciously!😮😮
This is absolutely hilarious to think that the most prestigious league's communication system has this many errors! Absolutely gutted
The fact it took the VAR so long to even realise his own mistake just shows how much attention he was paying to the game.
Thats disgraceful, felt like the VAR was more worried about keeping the ball in play rather than getting the call right
Just imagine the replay operator didn't tell they made a mistake. They would be sitting there comfortably and after a while they would be like "Wait, why the hell it's still 0:0"
😂😂
They would have knew a mistake was made the second the game continued as their decision was not awarded. Are we seriously saying they needed the operator to tell them they messed up?, that alone highlights something was seriously dodgy was going on with these var refs. Its corruption plain and simple.
0:47 to 0:51
_"Check complete, check complete. That's perfect. Off."_
It was not a miscommunication. It was actually called offside.
I've been looking for examples of absolute shithouse communications to use as teaching cases of total communications breakdown. Thanks guys. this is one is a doozie!!!
One of the referees or VAR assistants said off at 51 seconds, why wasnt it included in the video? That person is the most suspicious and should be investigated extensively across all his and his families bank accounts
Whoa, I was so happy for my fellow countryman scoring that great goal, waited for it to be checked and awarded...waited in vain, was really shocked like, this IS Premier League that cannot happen there! now this audio, boy, human error can happen everywhere in the world but this was about a GOAL! not a chance, not a card, not a penalty kick.
He's asked if hes happy with the onfield decision being offside and he says YES??? 0:52. The Assistannt VAR is the one who made that decision.
This is what I'm trying to bring to everyone's attention. Everything that Assistant VAR says is to validate the wrong decision.
At no point before the game is restarted does anyone in the var room say the words "he was onside , repeat onside. Allow the goal". I would have thought that was a fundamental.
Can't say any words after whatching this video....Shocking
Just change it from "check completed" to "onside" or "offside",to avoid misunderstandings next time.
What a mess🤦🤦🤦
My god. Absolutely shocking. This is disgraceful
I’m a Spurs fan that is shocked by this. I’m not sure why they can’t bring the game back to the incident. Who cares if they started playing again. It needed-correcting and the restart should have been the kick in the center by Spurs after that Liverpool goal. The refs actually need to go to the monitor and look at every VAR incident and look for themselves.
I don’t even support Liverpool but this is shocking how can this happen in the number 1 league in the world
I remember United was once given a penalty AFTER the final whistle was blown yet they couldn't delay a game that has progressed by not more than 30 seconds?! To rectify a "clear and obvious error"
That's sad
I think that’s different because the game hadn’t ‘restarted’
@@l_karuhangathe game was literally over
The only difference in that is that VAR check was still ongoing eventhough the final whistle has been blown..but this one VAR check was completed..there might be a rule that VAR cannot change it once the check has been completed..i don't know ..just pointing out the difference that's all
@@dzeklakovic7568 ...The foul obviously occurred during game time and then was reviewed by VAR. While that was happening the ref blew for full time. The VAR check obviously has still got to be made.
With the Liverpool incident all they had to do is ask the ref to stop play and alert him to the fact a wrong decision had been given. Not difficult ...but apparently they decided to keep digging when they found themselves in a hole.
there were at least 2 people in that audio who were behaving deliberately and intentional. There is massive corruption involved but everyone is too scared to say it and face up to it. These are not errors week in and week out
0:52 "oh wait wait wait" 😂💀
control room guys knew they were in trouble when they saw match restart with a free kick there instead of kick off...
😢😢 They could have stopped the game quickly and overturned the decision... normally they show VAR forensics on the big screen along with verdict after check complete saying offside/onside... why didn't they show it? It would be much easier and transparent that way tbh.
It was not miscommunication or a mistake, the information was intentionally withheld by Darren England from Simon Hopper. Darren England has to be investigated thoroughly.
They need to establish clear communication protocols when a check happens not whatever this is. What a mess!!!
I really hope 'Well done boys, good process' becomes a meme
Hats off to Liverpool for opening so many possibilities for other clubs in the future 👏👏👏👏
People saying the club is overrreacting when they have the balls to really stand up to PGMOL and their refs in way that hopefully benefits everyone but there’s football fans that are too dumb and only care about club competition to see that. I hope MORE clubs raise a stink about dubious calls against them, put pressure on these refs and PGMOL, there’s power in numbers. There needs to be serious changes
There have been 6 other apologies by VAR this year. Why is this different from the other 6 mistakes? Genuine question!
@@kenjhill1 it's not Liverpool's fault that those clubs didn't take any actions, they could, but they chose to settle with an apology.. this is genuine answer.
@@ronnynoneofyourbusinessgoo7892 Exactly, never seen anything like it. Liverpool players were getting booked for asking questions or running.
On field decisions were correct, they allowed play to continue and let VAR confirm or correct their decision. Complete incompetence from the VAR team and cowardice after knowingly making the mistake.
The VAR ref was in UAE 48 hours before the game. Won't be surprised if he talked to the City owners. What a corrupt bunch.
There is a part of the video and specifically audio missing where it clearly cuts out on 48-50 seconds.
How hard it is to make the communication between ref and VAR heard round the stadium. Wouldnt have happened otherwise
How the replay operator more makes sense then VAR operator
Damn, the miscommunication is crazy. Right decision, bad communication. That’s absurd.
8 errors made for 1 decision by VAR official
1. Did not see Diaz stopped celebrating
2. Did not see the Assistant ref raised the flag for offside
3. Did not hear the linesman say “Delaying, delaying, flagging for offside”
4. Said Check Complete instead of Onside
5. Did not see the onfield ref signal subsequently Offside
6. Did not see the free kick being taken instead of a start from center
7. Did not think anything was wrong even when the operator immediately said “delay, delay the game”
8. Did not communicate the mistake to the onfield ref and make him possibly find a solution
The Assistant VAR committed these 8 errors too
16 errors for 1 single decision!
The quickness with which he says "cant do anything" is very guilty-panicky, thats all I'll really say.
Millions people watching the match. I think, Its all about the honor, integrity, credibility and football essence : fairplay. Investigate its a must
He could have at least contacted the in field referee and let him make the decision to stop the game or not .
This will be a really big deal if this decision counts at the end of the season.
No it won’t. It only an incorrect decision. There will be many more throughout the season. Some will no doubt go in Liverpool‘s favour.
@BlueAndWhiteZebra worth pointing out also that Liverpool may still have lost the game regardless. Wasn't last minute, they were still down to 10.
At a basic level this is "just" an incorrect offside call. Pre-VAR they happened all the time and were forgotten about within days. This is farcical officiating, but in terms of knock-on effects on titles etc it is no different to the million other officiating errors in the history of football.
@@XIIIMPCcan't get your logic as it's tight at the top and even 1 point can decide the title. Also lfc has won games with 10 men this season and Jota should not have got a yellow when he didn't even touch the player. Logic 😂.
I'm a city fan but how on earth did anyone claim that was offside??? He's miles on
Nobody claimed it was offside, it was a communications failure
Linesman claimed offside, referee agree, var didn’t object. Tell me how is this just human communication failure/errors when involve everybody from linesman to referee to VAR and AVAR? What is the odd all of them making a same human mistake at the same times????
@@michaelyap939 to the lineman's credit, it was a close call from his vantage angle, and he visually and verbally showed offsides as his decision. He did his job, the others did not.
The refusal to correct their obvious mistake makes this hard to watch.
