I have searched for tutorials on "how to trim" with little success. Then I came across this AOA lesson. This is everything I wanted to know. well done and said sir.
After looking and searching for many explanations, I say this: This is the only F18 AoA explanation on youtube you’ll need. Well done and thanks! Now I understand.
Thank you for this! I had no idea that properly trimming the jet would effectively pin the E bracket to the velocity vector. Just that bit of information is making all the difference for me. I'm still struggling a little with the throttle response, but I just did three practice landings, and I'm already way, way better than I was before. A bit more practice, so I know better how to anticipate how much throttle change will produce a given amount of pitch change, and I'll be trapping 3 wires every time. Great video!
clubby37 hey thx for watching and commenting, if you need anything else you can join this discord chan and post your questions or fly with us discord.gg/SsV6gvr
Holy crap! That was the best explanation I have heard when it comes to landing. I was always fighting the trim while still pitching up or down with the stick. I am going to try this when I get home later. Thanks!
After 3857 failed attempts landing that bird on the boat, watching your video helped me understand what I did wrong 3857 times, i tried getting AOA while using the pitch on my stick.. after watching this, I face palmed hard and set my trim and it worked like magic- first time try I landed on the boat. Thank you!!!
Nice video, and good explanation of (on-speed) AOA! One piece of helpful I would like to add would is that whilst flying dirty (flaps/ gear down, airbrakes / slats out) the F18 is extremely slow to accelerate. I have seen people pull power to try and get the AOA (or get on glideslope) and end up in the drink, so be careful with that.
Nanne118 ya it’s fine if you don’t use speedbrakes, if your not familiar with the plane and how it flys the yes I agree someone who is new could risk falling out of the sky lol. It when you take out power you almost immediately put it back in, if you do that you will be fine. Thx for the comment
Very well said and instructed. I had a hell of a time finding an 'easy to understand' layman's terms description of how to bleed airspeed. I was getting a 20-degree nose up on flap deployment and then plunging into the ground because I couldn't keep my airspeed. Thank you for the video!
Yes!....excellent instruction and demonstration! Finally, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now :) It's still taking me too long to get everything to settle down, especially for a trap on the boat, but my field landings are finally pretty coordinated! :) Thank you so much :)
@@YourSimCFI One quick question......when you drop flaps and gear (@ 250kts), how are you initially negateing the large 30-40 degree pitch-up...... with stick or trim? Probably a stupid question.......because no one mentions this. Thank you again
JP mad it usually requires pitching and trim however the flaps are controlled by the fly by wire system and do take so time to come down so they don’t just come down immediately. But I use pitch then I trim for where I want the nose to be
OK!.....your "Fly by wire" finally sunk in! My trim inputs, as viewed on the FCS, never seemed to be responding....... while I chased the pitch with the stick. As soon as I neutralized the stick....there they were! :) I can now get On Speed AOA pretty quick now! :) TNX! :) No one specifically mentions this on tutorials.
I was trying to fly the hornet in the pattern like it was a viper and having a real headache getting solid traps. Didn't get trimming for on-speed conceptually until I saw this video. Nice demonstration.
Thanks so much for this video. My struggles and questions about using the trim seem to be answered. My plans kept bobbing all around when I adjusted throttle and trim, but now it's much more clear what I gotta do. I landed on a carrier in like 0 visibility without setting this up or knowing how to get my ils working....luck basically cause everytime after I hit the ocean, the carrier, or essentially floated right above the wires at the last second.
Very good explained and therefore, of course, I liked it! (also good, that you used the function "pause" at moments to have more time to explaining things)

Excelent video, excelent explanation. Short, simple, CLEAR. Glad to arrive here at this point of my learning the F18. New Sub brother! Greetings from Argentina
I've been flying and landing the F14 in DCS since it launched but using the stick and throttles rather than getting on speed and managing the descent with the throttles. Landings have always been sketchy but I managed to land on airfields most of the time and the carrier maybe 80-90%. After watching your video a few days ago and another one that also explains on speed. Well my airfirld landings are just getting better and better. It's taken some getting used to, to feather the throttles to keep the VV at the end of the runway but my landings are night and day compared to what they were like. Thank you so much for taking the time to explained it so thoroughly in the few days since watching it i'm already a more proficient (virtual) pilot
Ah, fucking hell.. Where has this video been all my life!? :D So tired of DCS people throwing abbrevations and terms at me without a proper explanation! This is awesome!
I am new to DCS and trying to learn the Hornet. Your video has really helped me understand on speed AOA. I am having a little trouble when I initially drop the gear and flaps because the aircraft pitches up steeply and I feel like I am chasing the pitch and it gets too high before the bracket comes down. Should I apply a little forward stick pressure while adding trim till the bracket comes down? You make it look so easy but I am struggling with the first moments after the gear and flaps come down. Thanks for your great video.

Bruh finally a video my brain can process...(after posting this comment, I made an attempt to land on the carrier and officially did it..It was rough in the final turn, but we landed it!)
what happens at 0:04 when you were climbing 1500 fpm, and then without change in the velocity vector it's suddenly 0? (oh haha I see now, you turned on active pause, ok, scratch that part of my question). I don't think I understand the velocity vector of the F18, it seems different from the A10c for example. There it means you will fly exactly towards wherever it's pointing. So you set AoA in landing config with pitch trim, and then you use throttle to raise/lower the vv for 3 deg glideslope (similar to this video and all airplanes). So then how come in flight your vv is pointing about 5deg into the sky with 0 vertical decent rate? I don't see how that means "you'll fly into that cloud it points at; however, you vertical velocity is 0". Can't wrap my head around that so far -- it's somehow very different from landing an A10c, despite the exact same principle of stick for speed, throttle for altitude.
Zoijar if you notice the solid green line on the hud, that’s the 0 from so if my VV is on that I won’t climb nor decent, it has nothin to do with nose pitch it’s all angle of attack, because as we get slow we need more lift from our wings to maintain level, so the nose will be higher the. Normal but we won’t be climbing. I hope this helped
I try to use my throttle but my velocity vector does not line up with the e bracket. I tried to use only throttle but it doesnt work. I would be fine but then a sudden movement, my E bracket goes all the way up or down. I use my power to get lined up together but it doesn't happen. So I use my trim which bounces

Oracuda if you want to climb sure not in landing confit go right ahead. it’s a hornet it’s trimmed for angle of attack you add power the flight controls will maintain that angle of attack. Watch a real hornet carrier approach. Keep an eye on the throttle movements to stick movements. ruclips.net/video/8ryiJP3H7OY/видео.html Notice how he’s trimmed for onspeed aoa thus throttle for climbs and descents stick mainly for rolling.
Thrust gives you total energy, stick distributes total energy.- Dr. Juan Merkt Easier way to say it is nose up is control authority, but to go up it's jet propulsion.
Official SWolf thx for watching I run reshade with a lot of filters, makes everything look a lot nicer. If you want help with it join the discord link in the description and I can help out. Thx again
6:21 so quick and dirty. throttle controll bracket yoiu neet it -3 degree or so for landing and trim AOA, but its not same if im 10dme or 5dme and AOA says ok and -3degree. it cant be both correct lol
The F-18's E bracket seems to operate exactly opposite from the F-16's AoA index. Is that correct? I'm having a lot of trouble transitioning to the F-18 and being able to maintain a stable descent, while it seems to be effortlessly easy in the F-16.
RazorTM ya the air force aircraft are different, tomcat and hornet act the same. If the E bracket is high in the hud you get the red light meaning fast, if you get the E Bracket is below you velocity vector then your slow undeclared by green light. Please join us discord.gg/SsV6gvr if you have any more questions
How do I get the v vector to maintain pointed at the runway threshold? I have the E bracket aligned with v vector but it is pointed way down the runway. So I am overshooting! How to correct that, please? Thanks.
pretty hard to describe and see what’s going on through text but it sounds like your to high or your not descending fast enough. You need to work the stick and throttle so your v vector is on your aiming point and on speed all the while on a 3 degree glide slope.

Oracuda if you want to climb sure not in landing confit go right ahead. it’s a hornet it’s trimmed for angle of attack you add power the flight controls will maintain that angle of attack. Watch a real hornet carrier approach. Keep an eye on the throttle movements to stick movements.

Notice how he’s trimmed for onspeed aoa thus throttle for climbs and descents stick mainly for rolling.
@@YourSimCFI yeah ill be honest, relative speed to AOA was always confusing for me, thanks for the quick response
Oracuda np man, angle of attack is relative air flow to the mean cord line of the wing.

Thrust gives you total energy, stick distributes total energy.- Dr. Juan Merkt
Easier way to say it is nose up is control authority, but to go up it's jet propulsion.
Very helpful
You land with flaps all the way down or auto flaps?
Fred Haskins flaps full on landing flaps half take off
Very useful and informative video.. I am interested in 1 on 1 training but the link in description doesn't seem valid.. Please let me know
Ahmed Shams hello thx for the comment, here’s a new link discord.gg/NbnPQG
@@YourSimCFI Thanks for that! I am a total noob though :-/ let me see when I am ready to join..
Ahmed Shams that’s ok I bring people From just downloaded to flying in about 2 hours
@@YourSimCFI That's good to hear :-) - I joined discord.. how do I find you there? username? thanks
Thanks for the tutorial, how cau i activate the trottle help indicator ?? Regards
Cristian Gonzalez right control enter should do it😀
@@YourSimCFI thank u man! I will try. Regardss
Very nice video! I have to ask, what's up with the clouds? they look soooo much nicer than what I've seen in game.
Official SWolf thx for watching I run reshade with a lot of filters, makes everything look a lot nicer. If you want help with it join the discord link in the description and I can help out. Thx again
How do you zoom in/out so quickly? Which keybinding do you use?
I believe that was in axis commands at the bottom zoom
6:21 so quick and dirty. throttle controll bracket yoiu neet it -3 degree or so for landing and trim AOA, but its not same if im 10dme or 5dme and AOA says ok and -3degree. it cant be both correct lol
You are a life saver !
@@YourSimCFI Thanks a lot, sir, for your prompt response. And I repeat your video tutorial on AoA is one of the best, regards. May I ask which HOTAS is good? I bought HOTAS 4 cheap and it cannot be tuned to fly level. My 17 yrs old Cyborg 3d Gold joystick is sticky but still OK. THANKS
@@vishwaskarmarkar9932 what I would do is have 0 dead zone but about 8 to 10 of positive curve
Thanks again for your great tutorial and advice. I am now getting OK landings the right way. Looking forward to more videos from you. Regards.
I'm pretty new when it comes to all this stuff. Would adding power just mean raising the throttle?

Great video Boeing..... AKA> Tr1gg22
Thx man
isnt it red is too slow, yellow too fast and green good? or is that only with the russian jets?
Fowl big negative, navy jets is red gas yellow on ball, or the orange donate is on speed aoa that’s what you want, green to slow. You can check for yourself, in the natops the landing aoa is 8.1 degrees, see what colour gets you 8.1 aoa or alpha
And it’s the same in Russian I believe
Thanks alot, helped alot!
