The transcendent talent of the best players on the best teams can be cancelled out by a corner and a bunch of really big dudes ricocheting it in off someone's ass. Tough break, should have found a more effective way to score more goals. It makes many, many playstyles viable, there is no unified strategy. If goals from outside the penalty area counted as 2, that's all anyone would try to do. Teams who rely on counter-attacks down the flanks, teams who use set-pieces to create chances, and teams who play a slow, possession-based game all suffer. Baseball is a little like that. If you hit a home run that just barely makes it at 356 feet, it's a score. Hit it 354 feet and it's probably an out. If you mishit it badly and it only makes it halfway, well that might be a double depending on which direction it went. A line drive might get you on base, but if you had hit it one degree more to the left it would have been an easy out. Even worse, the ball is nearly impossible to control. Batters are lucky to even hit the ball much of the time, so aiming it is a crap shoot. Batting takes a lot of skill, but each at bat involves a huge amount of luck. This is why the best teams only win about 60% of the time, and the playoffs are so unpredictable. If they wanted the best teams to win each playoff series, they'd need to play several dozen games.
@@QuarkTwain there's plenty of hitters that can pick which direction they'd like to the ball based on their swing speed. Sure, not all can but certainly the best of best can and do. They can also control whether they hit a grounder or a sac fly for the most part. All those things are possible.
Koala ツ no, because the team players in each team would be different without the three. The history would change even more than he showed in this video and it is impossible to guess what would happen to the game. And watch some old school games when there was no three pointers. Those games were boring, because of tight defense close to the basket and only thing that made the game exciting was fast breaks.
Abc it is easy as one two three *curry wouldnt be curry the 3 pointer drove people to shoot from distance so exclude all small ball 3 point deadeyes like curry and klay, that would gut the golden state warriors and make small ball nba a joke that means people like kyrie would have a harder time because while he can drive the 3 point arc pulls defenders out from under the rim so he can be the ankle breaking iso beast we all know and love losing the three point line would change the nba completely because suddenly a shot from distance doesnt mean as much and isnt worth the risk of a miss if theres not an extra point involved the nba would return to a slasher (LeBron and Westbrook) dominated league
There’s also a geometric reason for the relatively high percentage near the line. Defenders have to travel further, and that means it’s easier to get open space. There’s literally more space to cover out there, meaning even with the same level of effort it’d be more difficult to defend
Thomas can do that because defenders have to guard him at the 3-point line. Without the 3-pointer he would have absolutely zero chance to get to the rim because the defense would pack it in and always be in front of him. Proper offensive spacing and the threat of shooting a 3 allows guards to be a threat at the rim as well.
Every single Jon Bois video makes me feel like I’m in the middle of Japan in 2007 and I feel like I’m inside of a Wii... it’s very nostalgic and I love it so much

There have been a lot of 3 specialists. Hes the best ever at what he does. He also set the record, while sharing with Klay who had the 3rd best 3pt season in history. Only to be topped by Steph twice. So.... yeah
This is awesome. To come to the conclusion that the three point shot doesn’t really matter from this experiment is actually all the more reason to go for a shot that counts 1.5 times as much as a closer shot. Well done. So cool.
I love Chart Party! The voice-over, the music, the visual style... and of course, the actual content. I like to geek out on stats, and now I have someone to look up to. I think the 3pt is something great because it makes it possible for guys like Curry, who are not all that physical, to become game changing factors. Not better, not worse, but it makes it more fun when it's not the same old huge-guy-pushes-towards-the-rim. Nothing against that, it's just that the contrast makes it all shine brighter. Watching LeBron James and Steph Curry at once in the same universe is great. I say it's a keeper.
for instance ur the away team and ur down 6...... thats 3 times down the court, but 2 back to back dagger 3's and tie game..... now the crowd isnt as strong and some players feed off of that. THATS why we need the 3 pt line... its just too bad some teams ONLY shoot 3's.
more to my point of being down 6, lets say there was 34secs left in the game..... two 3's back to back would take the home team out of it.....OR hype the shit out of the home team. then lets says OT hits, now the team that hit the 3's is hot even tho the score is tied. sure 3 dunks would do the same but in the 34secs scenario, its much less likely.
also if no 3's the warriors dont win 73 games only 59..... the crowd IS WHY they shot so many. they are also THE REASON for this exact video, because they shoot too many and some ppl like myself dont like it.
DR. SAVAGE wait, so you're saying that if there wasn't a 3 pt they would automatically lose nearly 20 more games? If what you are doing is taking their made 3s and making them 2s then that doesn't work because then you have to factor in their field goal percentages and most likely they wouldn't shoot from so far away if there was no need making their likelihood of making the shot go up. So say they were a 40% 3pt shooter but had a 80% FG that would technically mean if they were 2-4 from the 3pt changing that to 2pts would technically mean they would make an extra shot so they'd be 3-4. Another thing the Warriors aren't the team that leads the league in 3pt attempts they are actually 5th behind Houston, Cleveland, Boston, and Brooklyn in that order. And they are 3rd in % behind San Antonio and Cleveland tho they are tied on the season with Cleveland. But I made my point. And I agree with yours that the 3 is not boring nor does it make the game worse, I've always been a fan of basketball but rarely watched the regular season, but the past 2 years I watch every game that comes on tv (dependent on the teams) because generally I'm guaranteed some kind of excitement. (Especially with the recent game winners and game tying buzzer beaters)
There needs to be an updated version of this. Even just a couple years ago 3’s were quite a bit less important than I would think they are now, but really their purpose is to space the floor properly.
I like threes because without them last minute upsets wouldn't be as common, and whenever someone does a half court or full court shot, it would be less likely to cause an upset
There is a college game from the 70s or 80s where a Virginia Tech player was credited with an 89 foot two pointer to win the game. However the replay showed his plant foot on the base line, so the shot should not have been scored. Officials did not review plays in those days.
Just implement NORTH KOREA'S BASKETBALL SCORING RULES - Slam dunks are worth three points (up from two) - Field goals in the final three minutes of the game are worth eight points (up from two) - Three-pointers are worth four if the ball doesn't touch the rim - A point is deducted for missed free throws
@@LeoAr37 the last 3min thing is bs but the others sound kind of fun. i mean, the 3pt dunk is a no for the NBA but I've got to assume NK basketball players are (local and) significantly shorter than NBA players generally are, so maybe it is that much more difficult to dunk vs. make a layup and thus reasonably worth the extra point.
Whilst arbitrary I think the shape of the 3 point line is pretty clever - can't bank shots off the glass from the corners, so bringing the distance in a bit makes it fairer to let people have a go at 3s around the court. Amazing video man 😃
I have zero opinion on NBA. I mean, absolute zero. THIS, however, I have a divisive opinion on. This video was fantastic. The concept and execution was top notch. The writing and narration, superb. Graphics and visuals are excellent. You made the content interesting and intriguing despite me having zero interest in it. Your deep research and efforts did not go unappreciated. I have subscribed and hope to see more of your work in the future.
The sentence "Thanks to guys like him, basketball is completely horrible and everything is ruined forever" alone deserves thumbs up. Great video yet again!
I would subscribe 1 million times if I could. Your work is worthy of more than just RUclips. ESPN, SC, Heck! Even a non-sports station would be more than pleased with your graphic design skills and editing prowess. keep up with what you're doing, and I guaranteed you're channel(and success) will blow-up and to something even more amazing than it already is! keep up the great work!
Bill Mitchell such a naive argument when people say basketball is boring cause it's not physical. It was NEVER about that. Go watch football. With no 3, and pretending this dudes reasearch was wrong(centers would matter more) then we'd watch a game slow as hell with twice as many fucking fouls
The game is more physical now than it's ever been. Jordan never got arm barred or hand checked as much as everyone says. There is much more of it today against shooters and point guards. Watch any good shooter run around screens and you'll see him get chucked and grabbed all game.
And to the original point, a center that can shoot 3s is probably the most valuable player in the league. It allows your offense to space out nicely and you also have the option to post up/kick out to the open man or just go up and dunk it. Centers will always be relevant. But the 3-pointer is the most valuable shot in basketball and centers have been slow to adapt until now.
yeah i happened to notice some weird copyright notices flashing at the bottom at some point. i guess you can load custom textures into google earth?? dunno
ha, yep! i tried to crop out the usage credits at the bottom that Google Earth thought i was using, but certain areas use multiple lines of credit so they creeped into the video a couple times
That's correct. It's important to realize that a made three-point shot is worth 50% more points than a two-pointer, so those 33% and 34% success rates from the three-point line are equal to a 50% success rate from inside the arc. And, since the ONLY 50% spot is right under the basket, the three-pointer become the percentage play to maximize your score. Take away the three-pointer, and the defense just focuses on stopping the easy shots from close in. Basketball becomes less a shooter's game, more a big man's game. With the defense no longer forced to spread out, the game becomes less interesting (in my opinion, anyway).
Needed to watch something like this tonight. Thanks so much Jon Bois, you’re a lifesaver and an inspiration to all us aspiring artist/sports stat nerds ❤️
Awesome video. Huge fan of the chart party series. What would happen if the NBA started valuing baskets based upon distance to the net? We could make farther shots worth more than closer shots but not 1.5 times more, like how it currently is (3pts is 1.5*2pts), which is too much. We should do a little study to determine some equation that values baskets as a function of distance to the net in a fair way so that the expected value of any shot from basically anywhere on the court is the same. This way teams would be simply trying to take the most open shot from anywhere on the court, without having to worry about the drastic difference of value of a 3pt vs. 2pt shot.
If you play basketball you will understand why the three point line is important; smaller players, who would easily be blocked around the basket, can compensate for their lack of height by having the skill to shoot at a longer range. These shots, being harder to hit, must be worth a greater amount of points in order to make up for their comparatively low accuracy. TLDR; the three point line makes size less of an advantage to players, and thus increases the overall level of skill displayed in professional (and recreational basketball). + they allow for tense, high risk, high reward game winners to be taken, which are gripping to watch.
dudewT212 honestly that could be a great idea. especially with how good curry is from almost half court. ive seen bron do it too. and if buzzer beaters from half court were 4 points then that would be crazzzzy. but people don't usually take that risk unless its buzzer beater.
As someone who decided to watch a video about a hypothetical world where 3 points don’t exist in a season that my team won the big thing in a sport I know nothing about instead of sleeping, I was not disappointed.
Dude, your videos are so good!!! The writing is clear, polished, and entertaining, and the editing is simple yet unique. Most importantly, your ideas are just so damn fun! I've just discovered your series, and I'm so glad. Clear and intelligent sports commentary exists!
Great research and analysis. It proves all this obsession about 3p shooters got out of hand. Titles are still decided on midrange shots because you need Buckets. Great video.
I rarely ever comment, but this video needs its due praise. This analysis of the NBA 3 point line is brilliant; the subject matter is interesting, the commentary is witty, informative, and well-delivered, and the visuals are entertaining, insightful, and complementary to the subject material. Sir, you have gained a subscriber.
The thought behind the 3 pt shot when the ABA originated the concept is that not only did it give an extra point and increased the chance of a team that was behind to come back. It also loosened congestion under the basket. Yet it was the college game that truly changed the equation. Before the three point shot (and for that matter the shot clock) it was becoming more and more a big man's game with the conventional wisdom being to work the ball inside and by the early 80's the college game was a very half court affair. Shot percentages were up, but scoring was down and really the nadir was reached in 1982 when Carolina went into the four corners against Virginia in the ACC finals and Terry Holland chose not to Chase and UNC basically ran out the clock over the games final ten minutes. The next year many conferences started experimenting with the shot clock and 3pt line with the ACC being the most radical with a 17'9" three point line and a 30 second clock that was turned off for the last four minutes and OT. By '87 the NCAA made a 45 second clock and 19'9" line standard and changing the math. A few years later these players were in the NBA and naturally the new math came with them. The reason why the 3 was so rarely used in those first years was because the talent coming in had been bread on doing things the old fashioned way and the three was seen as a desperation tactic.
This was the first Jon Bois video I ever watched. Someone linked here from r/NBA. I'm really happy they did, because Jon weaves stats and storyline together in such a pleasant way. I don't know if there is anyone else making content like this. The only other RUclipsrs that come close (for me) are Hot Ones, Summoning Salt, and Tier Zoo.
The 3pt line completely changed the game. It made a parameter offense a threat, and took away some advantage gained by just having size. As a big man, it still irks me, but seeing the shooters that have developed because of it amazes me. I coach high school, and Friday night we had a 6'6" kid hit 5 threes in the first quarter. That wouldn't have been a scenario we would have dreamed of when I played.
That last Steph Curry stat is insane. Congratulations on finishing this whole video, I can't even imagine how much work it took but we thank you in full!
I know I'm late to the chart party, but I love these videos dude. The thing about the 3 though, is that it's the main reason that so many plays are drawn up to get distance shooters open. Without it teams would default to using most of the shot clock to work for the most high percentage chance. This would result in a more post pounding physical league that some people (myself included) would find more entertaining. It would also mean that the and-1 is the only three point play in the game and as a consequence slashers would be encouraged to attack the hoop even in heavy traffic and get opposition bigs into more foul trouble. This would ultimately create more players in the vein of Michael Jordan, or at least Vince Carter. Obviously you would still have and need long range snipers but they would be relied on more towards the end of the shot clock cycle if the defense is swarming the paint and leaving people open deep, rather than pulling up for 3points on the fastbreak. I don't hate all the deep shooting these days, but honestly a return to 80s and 90s style basketball would be a breath of fresh air for me. So if they decided to ditch the 3, I wouldn't be against it. They won't though. I'm sure it's here to stay.

The history would change even more than he showed in this video and it is impossible to guess what would happen to the game. And watch some old school games when there was no three pointers. Those games were boring, because of tight defense close to the basket and only thing that made the game exciting was fast breaks.
Koala ツ OMGGG
He would've just gone to Cleveland instead lmao
He's still a snake.
Wow that curry stat blew my mind
Ahaha this is a crazy amount of work. And it was an incredible watch, thanks.

There’s also a geometric reason for the relatively high percentage near the line. Defenders have to travel further, and that means it’s easier to get open space. There’s literally more space to cover out there, meaning even with the same level of effort it’d be more difficult to defend

Kblayney
Isaiah Thomas can almost always push through to get the layup and he's 5'9"
Thomas can do that because defenders have to guard him at the 3-point line. Without the 3-pointer he would have absolutely zero chance to get to the rim because the defense would pack it in and always be in front of him. Proper offensive spacing and the threat of shooting a 3 allows guards to be a threat at the rim as well.
+HunterK that is because his team gives him hella screens lol they have plays specifically for Isaiah going into the paint
HunterK Isaiah Thomas has been traveling all year and it hasn't been noticed until lately...... that's why he can get in the paint

Kyle Korver's percentage though! He is way too underrated to be shooting .492

Yams fair enough

Haters gonna hate, but a star above the rest, is still a star above the rest.
That thing with Steph at the end was amazing. Scary how dominant he is from the arc
That was actually a really great video.
better than Pretty Good? 👍
nope ive watche Koo Dae-Sung 4-5 times (partially just to watch Randy Johnson explode that bird :) )
Thats pretty good
Pretty, but not pretty good.
King Jay No it was a pretty good video
It’s genuinely amazing how long it took for people to realize that 33% from 3 produces the same amount of points as 50% from 2
heres the thing....... the 3 pt shot is a crowd hyper, and can CHANGE the vibe in the arena weather ur home or away.... and u cant chart that.
for instance ur the away team and ur down 6...... thats 3 times down the court, but 2 back to back dagger 3's and tie game..... now the crowd isnt as strong and some players feed off of that. THATS why we need the 3 pt line... its just too bad some teams ONLY shoot 3's.
sure, but thats not the argument....
more to my point of being down 6, lets say there was 34secs left in the game..... two 3's back to back would take the home team out of it.....OR hype the shit out of the home team. then lets says OT hits, now the team that hit the 3's is hot even tho the score is tied. sure 3 dunks would do the same but in the 34secs scenario, its much less likely.
also if no 3's the warriors dont win 73 games only 59..... the crowd IS WHY they shot so many. they are also THE REASON for this exact video, because they shoot too many and some ppl like myself dont like it.
Silent Cougarr lmao im imagining someone shooting a ball 70 feet in hopes of scoring a game winning 2
@@bena9369 like Jerry West in the 1970 finals?
There is a college game from the 70s or 80s where a Virginia Tech player was credited with an 89 foot two pointer to win the game. However the replay showed his plant foot on the base line, so the shot should not have been scored. Officials did not review plays in those days.
Just implement NORTH KOREA'S BASKETBALL SCORING RULES
- Slam dunks are worth three points (up from two)
- Field goals in the final three minutes of the game are worth eight points (up from two)
- Three-pointers are worth four if the ball doesn't touch the rim
- A point is deducted for missed free throws
@@LeoAr37 the last 3min thing is bs but the others sound kind of fun. i mean, the 3pt dunk is a no for the NBA but I've got to assume NK basketball players are (local and) significantly shorter than NBA players generally are, so maybe it is that much more difficult to dunk vs. make a layup and thus reasonably worth the extra point.
I got chills at the end seeing Steph way up there. Insane. This was a really cool project.

Holy cow is that stephen curry season an outlier!
no it isn't its the same shooting percentage, he just had more opprotunities to shoot.
michael carandang it's an outlier because of how many he made regardless of whether or not his percentage changed
michael carandang it’s a massive outlier, what are you talking about?
.454 is well above average 3-point shooting, even before you factor in the sheer volume.
It might be an outlier but all I see is greatness
Whilst arbitrary I think the shape of the 3 point line is pretty clever - can't bank shots off the glass from the corners, so bringing the distance in a bit makes it fairer to let people have a go at 3s around the court. Amazing video man 😃

Alternative title: Steph Curry is a god
Watching this video for the fourth time makes me realize that I need a 2020 version of this video.
Imagine the physicality if there wasn't a three point line? We would be back in the 90s and the center position would be relevant.
Bill Mitchell that would be incredibly boring
Flats incredibly boring? Lol the NBA is boring to watch now since they limited the center position .
Found this video almost 2 years later... and well done! This was fascinating to watch!
um... holy hell, did you use google earth to make these animations??
Wow! I was wondering how he did these! That seems to be how. Great observation.
yeah i happened to notice some weird copyright notices flashing at the bottom at some point. i guess you can load custom textures into google earth?? dunno
ha, yep! i tried to crop out the usage credits at the bottom that Google Earth thought i was using, but certain areas use multiple lines of credit so they creeped into the video a couple times
really awesome tho, a great "off-label" use for GE!
How do you custom google earth?
These are the best sports-related videos on youtube. Really too bad they seemed to have stopped.
If the 3 point line is removed, defenses may adjust and sag down and the 40% all across the board may drop.
back to the 80-90s when you shoot 33% you a goo shooter, oh kids practice throwing up crap, to make shot now
That's correct.
2pt shot.
This video was incredible. The music, the editing, the commentary... and of course, what an ending.
Lachlan Raidal your tldr is about the same length as your original post lol
Lachlan Raidal so midrange shots don't exist?
Lachlan Raidal .... So, in that case, why not make half-court shots worth 4-points. "High risk, high reward"... Right?
dudewT212 honestly that could be a great idea. especially with how good curry is from almost half court. ive seen bron do it too. and if buzzer beaters from half court were 4 points then that would be crazzzzy. but people don't usually take that risk unless its buzzer beater.
Lachlan Raidal your TLDR is the same length as the first half of your comment lol
As someone who decided to watch a video about a hypothetical world where 3 points don’t exist in a season that my team won the big thing in a sport I know nothing about instead of sleeping, I was not disappointed.

3:16 correction: that red area is DeMar DeRozan Land.

They wouldn't attempt as many difficult shots from that far out because there's no more value to them so it's a bit flawed. Still a great video though
