December 18, 2022. The Patriots, tied, attempted a desperation lateral play, and for the 3rd time since 2000, it results in a touchdown... for their opponents, the raiders, who score the only walk off interception TD off a lateral since 2000, and probably the only in NFL history.
At 4:40, if I'm Rivers I know if i pick that ball up, I'm gonna get creamed. If I don't pick it up, I'm going to have to try and tackle a 275 lb d-end. No, if I'm Rivers, I'm kicking that ball, drawing a flag, and going the fuck home.
i agree, I'd rather lose a game than have a slightly higher chance of winning than getting clobbered than an NFL linebacker. Although I'd rather lose than get clobbered by Rivers either, he's 6'5, 228 lbs, I'm 5'11, 125

Man, even as a Falcons fan, while I usually want the Saints to get trampled in any game they play, can't help but feel sorry for them. Especially Carney. I'll never cheer for the team (unless it's necessary for the Falcons), but I'll like the occasional player. John Carney was that player. Shame that it had to be him.
John Carney had a house in my hometown and helped our high school kicker out with everything that Bergeron talked about. I was probably 10 at the time and he let me catch the punts and field goals. Nicest guy I've ever met.

I just watched this for about the 10th time. There's something about how Jon did his edit at 4:40 that keeps bringing me back. I want to make videos that mean something to people, the way that Jon does. Thank you Jon, you are an inspiration.
Oh man, I can never forget this game. I think this was the first year my family had NFL Sunday Ticket and we switched over to this game live. Whenever I think a team I'm rooting can't possibly win or lose, I always, always think back to this little, but massive game.
In your last calculation you used the overall percentage of missed extra points. You should have used the percentage for this particular kicker just to drive the nail a little deeper.
For those of you wondering, the song starting at 4:40 is called "Zero Gravity" by Richard Philip Birdsall. Jon loves using it in his videos and it makes sense why, just has that almost mystical sound about it
everything post-reveal is AMAZING. the repeats. the sudden color inversion to reflect the tone shift. the fact that each subsequent NOOO is played slower and more drawn out, like it's a cheesy moment in a movie or something. like it's bigger than it was. and then the background music that invokes the horror, the dread, the shock of this moment. i laughed out loud at the newspaper headlines, the "SAINTS DREAMS GO WIDE RIGHT". shown while the NOOOO is at its most dramatic, it feels like it's too soon, even though the article was published days afterwards. and then the reversal of the footage showing the successful lateral, because this one fuckup had undone all their previous victories. god.

Looking back at all of the struggles and failures the Saints have had, it makes their Super Bowl victory more special, and that whole season seem like destiny was on their side.
I don't know if that NFC Championship game was fixed Vikings' fan, but there was an absurd amount of bias in the Saint's favor in the OT. There seemed to be no bias in the 3rd and 4th quarters, and the Vikes were in a position to win the game with a FG, when Favre threw the pick. IF the refs were fixing it, why wouldn't they have shown some bias in the 3rd or 4th quarter to help the Saints (other than letting some defenders get away with a late hit on Favre) ensure a win, and or to make sure the Vikes wouldn't come within a FG of winning it ?
I remember watching this live when it happened, but I totally forgot how incredible the lateral play were. The kick completely overshadowed it. If mentioned I would have only said it was a last second miracle TD that the kicker blew in the end.
Something about Jon bois videos is inherently surreal and makes it super interesting. I feel like he could make videos on anything in this format and make anything interesting. My applause goes to you Johnny boi
The way he set it up you KNEW the most ridiculously awful thing was going to happen to give everybody a heart attack. Rename the NO team the Martyrs. Nice work. Sometime do one on Wayne Walker, kicker for the Detroit Lions, and a wicked kicking slump he had back in the '60s. He passed at age 80 in 2017. At the time he was asked how he was and answered, "I can't kick!".
I don't know why it took me so long to realize why the elongated repetition of "NOOOO!!!!" at around 11 minutes seemed so familiar, because now that I _have_ realized it I can't possibly ever hear it as anything other than Shatner screaming "KHAAAAAAN!!!"
Oh this is gonna be good. When I figured out what the topic was I got so excited. This tragedy is so rarely discussed. I remember watching it when I was 6, live. It is the first single football play I remember.
This is tremendously well done, Jon. This is to me - perhaps the funniest (unintentionally, anyway) broadcaster call of the recent era outside of the 1994 TX high school game where Plano East comes back from down 24 pts with 3:03 to go ahead 44-41 ... only to lose on the ensuing kickoff which was run back for a TD with the broadcaster saying, "NO NOoooo, I don't believe it. God bless those kids ... I'm sick, I want to throw up."
Not even a fan of NFL, but man, these videos highlight the brightest & crushing moments of every sport out there, and it's an absolute treat watching them. Massive props to Jon Bois.
Hey Jon, looks up the last play between the Eagles and Giants in December 2001. Think it was Ron Dixon possibly I forget, but it was a game to get to the playoffs and they almost completed a hook and ladder play with 6 seconds left from the 20 needing a TD to win. As an Eagles fan I almost had a heart attack
I remember hearing he got a great ovation in the final week in the dome, they appreciated all he had done, he came back in 2010 when Hartley was erratic
Tom Hill Idk, you pull off one of the greatest desperation lateral plays as time runs out...scoring to give your team a shot at the tie...then have one of the most automatic kickers ever, miss a chip shot extra point.
OpiZoid quit fucking crying Vikings fan you will never make it to the Super Bowl and win it
@@dillpickle7358 you simply could have said "win the superbowl"
I remember watching this live when it happened, but I totally forgot how incredible the lateral play were. The kick completely overshadowed it. If mentioned I would have only said it was a last second miracle TD that the kicker blew in the end.

When you open the krispy Kreme box and it's empty
Back here from the FSU-LSU 2022 season opener, great stuff
I don't know why it took me so long to realize why the elongated repetition of "NOOOO!!!!" at around 11 minutes seemed so familiar, because now that I _have_ realized it I can't possibly ever hear it as anything other than Shatner screaming "KHAAAAAAN!!!"
After I seen the title NOOO!!!! I already knew what you were covering. Its a sad day (in many MANY days) for us Saints fan.
absolutely love these videos. what happened to the Stanislav Petrov one though?
Was that by Jon Bois?
Thanks for reopening this painful Saints fan wound
I was watching this on my phone and my phone died at 12:51. I was alone, in the dark, and spooked.
On the anniversary of this game I always comeback here to watch this whole video to revisit it.
Never gets old every time I watch this!
"You can't tell me that I witnessed what I just saw take place"
These videos do such a good job portraying emotion. It’s actually unnerving how well done it is
Patriots loss to lateral by Dolphins December 9th, 2018
Damn, fresh and juicy.
Pats won the Super Bowl though
@@CovfefeDotard Yeah, but Miami beating the Pats in otherwise meaningless, lost seasons is one of the best NFL traditions.
i was watching this earlier today and then i saw rutgers vs indiana 4th and 32nd play happen later in the day. crazy play, laterals are sick
the bois has awoken! thank you lord!
That 'hoo, hoo" at the end. So much pathos. What amazing videos this guy makes.
As a Saints fan, I hate how much I love how well you did this.
You Sir, are a very gifted storyteller. You brilliantly make the objective, subjective.
4:45 to 5:55 just gives me the shivers everytime
You know what the song is?
@@MrImpossiblyStupid it's called Zero Gravity
absolutely unreal journalism. You have the mind of a wise old alien. I love this so much. Even the way everything sounds is art.
11:00 This guy just turned Jim Henderson into an air raid siren. Oh my god, how did he do that?
Jon Bois is the greatest sportswriter alive
This is a PRETTY GOOD channel. Subbed.
This is awesome
Another season of "Pretty Good"??? YES!!!
Back in the day as a Saints fan, this is the kind of thing you EXPECTED to happen!
So glad those days over! 😀
The Nooo! Sounds like a tornado warning
This was my first Jon Bois production, and, to this day, remains my favorite video of all time
Jon Bois you are always better than just pretty good
"I know that you know" Watching this over 4 yrs later. I hope know this still makes you feel a bit less lonely :)
I love this video.
I expect an update anytime soon thanks to MIA-NE week 14
I remember hearing he got a great ovation in the final week in the dome, they appreciated all he had done, he came back in 2010 when Hartley was erratic
When you kept replaying "*NOOOOOO!*" it sounded like a tornado siren
As a falcons fan, NO Saints struggles always put a smile on my face
This story, was indeed, pretty good
How do you go into the locker room after that?
Walking
You don't
It's disappointing sure but it's not like some terrible greek tragedy occurred. No-one died....yet....
Tom Hill Idk, you pull off one of the greatest desperation lateral plays as time runs out...scoring to give your team a shot at the tie...then have one of the most automatic kickers ever, miss a chip shot extra point. That’s like irony straight out of a Greek tragedy. About tragic enough to have made Oedipus gouge his eyes out if he had witnessed it. Sophocles couldn’t have written it any better.
The framing of the story about how good he is against the setup to the ending was just so good.
MIAMI AGAINST NEW ENGLAND THOUGH
27 ene. 2016
You’re a special kind of stupid acting like a game that happened over 2 years after this video came out would be considered.
Absolutely tremendous video. I remember this play like it was yesterday. I joked about the Carney miss for years since, but now it is actually heart-breaking to watch.
