I had to pause at 26:38 when he was talking about his best friend’s suicide. God, Nick and Ethan are always posting trigger warnings and saying they’re sensitive to people’s feelings, but they are weaponizing someone’s trauma from witnessing a suicide. And you could see on the guy’s face that he’s still heartbroken about the situation and they used his friends suicide as leverage. Disgusting.

As an artist in college for art, in Chicago, I wanna put Ethan in a time-out. Plenty of artists just make shit for the sake of making, nothing political about it.
the idea that everything is political comes not from the idea that everyone who creates does it with the intent purpose of being political, but that the ideas one chooses to share, represent, and and spread throughout the world will be present in one's work, making it a reflection of that person's perception of the world. I don't like ethan, but i believe that it is true that one's own personal morals and sensibilities that they hold to be true or inherent will show in their work.

@swollenapocrypha I disagree with that take entirely. A work does not necessarily reflect the perspective of the artist, and even if it did that can't always be extrapolated into politics. That's just an excuse for twisting art around political beliefs. If you set out to interpret art politically you can convince yourself that any piece means any thing. Whether you believe interpreting art through a political lense and drawing whatever conclusions you want is legitimate is up to you, but that is far from objective fact, and calling someone an idiot for disagreeing is ridiculous.
Problem is people mix up politics with sharing your thoughts and views on the world or even themes through your art not all thoughts and views need to be through the political lens

I still have a problem with super mega because something just seems fishy over there in general. But I thought it was hilarious that Nick decided to focus on (excuse my brain fog) the one guy going out with an onlyfans creator. I don't like reductive arguments either; sex ed/heath is not meant to be perverse but to inform children on their body and how to establsh/ respect boundaries. Drag Queens reading books to kids is a theater performance, if they are reading a grade level book then I do not get how this is inherently sexually perverse.
Why do they want to read to the children so badly and in Drag. Usually kids go to plays, exhibits or museums to showcase future careers and possibilities. There more to it than just reading a book to kids.

It’s literally the exact same as a party princess reading books to kids. Is it necessary? No, but it’s fun and engaging for kids. It lets them be imaginative and accept differences. It’s not to introduce a career, it’s as simple as reading to kids to introduce to them that different human beings exist, and that there aren’t “boy colors” and “girl colors” like many little kids are taught. Little kids are often taught gender stereotypes and shit like that. It’s genuinely as simple as celebrating queer culture, diversity, and imagination and making a safe space for kids and their imaginations.

I haven’t watched either of these RUclipsrs for like the better part of almost 2 years now, it’s kinda sad seeing them being hypocrites and lying about a whole bunch of stuff or being misinformed because they do have potential.
i used to watch these two a lot but i'm glad i stopped because the way they act morally superior despite them clearly having flaws and immediately take sides before the entire situation is done is something i don't stand for. i stopped watching nick because he jumped into a situation (unrelated to this one) asking if he should talk about it while clearly wording it with bias and trying to get his audience riled up so they'd vote for it instead of an issue that was much more important. and i stopped watching ethan because of a reactionary, insensitive thumbnail where they called a youtuber "manipulative" for crying and making a tribute to his dead friend. criticisms i thought i'd add

I swear, most of us "right wingers" don't hate lefties. Most of us have plenty of family & friends who don't agree with our politics. ALOT of us used to be lefties ourselves, and so we understand that decent intelligent people can have "leftist" beliefs. Alot of them have very good intentions.
Since younger folks tend to be more left-leaning, the worst behaviour is going to seen in left-leaning communities. But that doesn't mean bad behaviour is entirely representative of the left.

As an artist, the idea of "all art being political" just pisses me off and Ethan's arrogance on the subject as if he understands art or artists is infuriating. Guarantee you the dude knows nothing about art fundamentals, processes, the different mediums used, the time and patience it requires for improvement, etc. He just sees it as a tool to further push his own politics, and not think about any substance or actual intent of the artist. Also him talking about how Alex should fund the therapy and housing of pedophiles that tried to meet up with what they thought were children is a MASSIVE self report.

@ggwellplayed7663 well sure, I figure "all art is political" tends to relate more to, like, narrative pieces, or something that isn't just a wholesale depiction of an object or the like. Even then, i guess the argument could be made that artistic expression in and of itself is a political statement as there are certain ultra-utilitarian ideologies that would consider the time and resources that go into the creation of art as wasteful and would shun the very idea (this is largely hypothetical but you *know* there are kids out there who got abused because they wanted to do "sissy shit" like drawing)

Ethan's whole "all art is political" video is still such a brainrot take to me. Like, yes, art can be political, and a lot (perhaps most) is, but to insinuate *all art* is, is about as close-minded as you can be when it comes to art.
Locking down everything in a medium full of differing mindsets and feelings to just "political" is wrong. Also, observing everything through a political lens all the time is no fun anyway. Not everything has to make a statement, political or otherwise.
If you believe Video Games to be art, because they are, then by that standard all games are political too, no? Games _can_ be political, Fallout and Metal Gear are great examples of actual politics in games, but that was the *entire point* of those games. To spread a message, whether subtly, satirically, or obviously, that War = Bad. And to be fun games ofc, which was really all that matters.
However, to say that *all games* are political is incorrect. What're the inherent politics behind Hello Kitty Island Adventure, or Pong, or Pepsiman, or even something like Custom Order Maid? Looking at something as absurd as Pepsiman or as "adult-only" as Custom Order Maid and seeing only "political" is just the most pigheaded stance you can have.
Just like how every dolphin is a whale, but not every whale is a dolphin: Art can be political, but not all art is political.

I have never been a fan of Ethan’s content. To me, he always came off as extremely rude and insensitive when talking about controversial topics. i hate seeing this happen. i trusted the opinions of ethan and nick for a long time, and they were my favorite RUclipsrs. but i had to learn the hard way that not every commentary RUclipsr does their rightful research into the nuance. i feel very disappointed in them, and I wholeheartedly agree that they should not be on the internet anymore. some people just aren't fit for it.
Look at it as a lesson learned! It’s never wise to put a celebrity, e-celeb, or really anybody on any kind of pedestal because we are all flawed and sooner or later the image you have cultivated of them in your head will be shattered. It sucks, but at least you won’t make the same mistake again :]

this is kind of unrelated but as a trans guy i hate nick and ethan for doing so many videos "defending" my community. they weren't well researched, they didn't talk to actual trans people, and they acted morally superior to people who just didn't understand.

Ethan looks like the kind of guy to sit in a van across from a kid's playground breathing really heavily the entire time.
i love how ethan chastised that one dude for being "mean" when 90% of the time ethan opens his mouth it's to call someone he dislikes or disagrees with stupid/cringe/etc. i know way more about both of these tools than i ever wanted to because of the supermega drama and i hate that youtube basically let them get away with it. it seems like nick's audience is gone for good and he's slowly giving up on youtube so that's some consolation, but unfortunately ethan is still going strong.
The supermega situation is what finally opened my eyes to all the issues with Ethan and nicks content, and I haven’t watched them since. The only thing that still bothers me is the amount of blame put on lex. It just seems like she was finally ready to tell her story, and everyone around her stuck their claws in and made it about themselves, while also leaving the VICTIM of SA to take all the feedback and criticism. While she brought things up that weren’t relevant or ok to bring up, she already explained why she did it (thought she needed to overdo her explanation for people to believe her which is very common for SA victims) and she even apologized to supermega, but people still attack her. I hope lex is doing ok and gets away from the selfish people around her. Anyways that’s my rant, pretty good video!

I consider myself pretty far left leaning and used to be a fan of the two. I was never a big drama person though so I gradually stopped watching them as their takes seemed incredibly reactionary and sometimes downright cruel. On the super mega drama I first watched Nick’s video, had an idea of where he was coming from but waited until the response to fully form an opinion. It really showed how twisted and selfish his worldview is and goes to show that reactionaries exist on all sides of the political spectrum

Idk the details about Ethan's take on art being inherently political but what I will say is that more art than expected can be political, even unintentionally. Like for example, Glorilla has her album Ehhthang Ehhthang and she raps in her Memphis accent. She probably was just doing what she likes and sharing her experiences, but the fact that she didn't use ""proper English"" speaks to the broader assumption of there being correct and incorrect ways of speech, which then gets into colonization, power structures, and similar. Her being unashamed and open about her perspective is political in that it goes against the grain of "correct" ways to operate in America (not just limited to speech, but also identities). I myself am a queer disabled genderfluid girlie of color and taking care of myself and accepting myself *is* inherently political bc I am no longer bowing to what's considered normal. I no longer shame myself for having different needs or not following eurocentric beauty standards, etc. Yet, not complying can be very dangerous. It's not just how I perceive myself but also how I am perceived. My general appearance convinces people that I am Woman, which comes with its own dangers, but not presenting "cisgender enough" or being known to have transitioned adds another layer of danger. In come the unsolicited comments, the stalking, the threat of attack. Just think of all the black trans women killed every year with no justice. All that to say, there's a lot of room for discussion about the crossover of art/expression and politics. Expression that isn't meant to be anything in particular can be political in a larger context whether it's meant to be or not. Simultaneously, I think that saying all art is always political is too much of a generalization. I would love to hear others' thoughts on the matter.

Yes, Nick’s brother has his own channel. It started getting more traffic thanks to the algorithm. His brother is actually pretty cool. He covers different internet drama than Nick and usually approaches topics in a different way than Nick.
