Eric Gales, busy promoting his new album, Middle of The Road, took a break to hang with PG’s John Bohlinger at City Winery in Nashville. Gales, a master of melody, nuance, and flash, showed us his simple setup he uses both live and in the studio.
Gales’ No. 1 is this Sonnet Raw Dawg II signature model by Magneto Guitars. This S-style axe features a hard-rock maple neck, East Indian rosewood fretboard with an 11" radius, medium C-shape neck, 22 narrow jumbo frets, and Lollar Blackface pickups.
His backup is this Xotic XS-1 loaded with Fishman Fluence Single Width pickups and a Super-Vee BladeRunner whammy bar. Both guitars are strung with Dunlop strings (.010-.046) and tuned to Eb.

And over 4 years later, Eric is STILL clean and sober!!! Props to his lovely wife, LaDonna for supporting him and being his rock. Anyone who loves Eric Gales and his music owes her a huge debt of gratitude. She loved him back to life!
Amen, I got to meet her in Birmingham on May 6 and she is a wonderful person, may God bless them both
Well said Matthew! Couldn't agree more.
I didn't know Eric Gales till today. Seems like a lovely man and an incredible guitar player.
I opened up for Mr. Gales 4 or 5 years ago at The Key Club on the Sunset Strip. He ate all my French fries at soundcheck. :-)
Legend established.
hahahah french fries are good!! haha very funny story!
#BOOM!
those weren't your french fries, man.
Course u did open up for him
How is Eric Gales not a household name? Here's to hoping moving forward that one of the greatest guitar players on the planet gets his due.
To my ear he has the best vibrato feel and touch in the game. ❤
"How is Eric Gales not a household name?" I ask myself that same question every time I hear him play. He's an incredible guitar player.
Bohlinger seems to bring out the enthusiasm of the artists. Hes my favorite interviewer.
yeah the more videos I watch of him, the more i like his style
"My Friend Eric Johnson"..what a league to be in wow!
Um hm m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3745958595448309&id=100001026151518
I really don't get the hate on Bohlinger... the dudes an excellent player, knows the industry in n out, speaks the language, respects and understands the artist. I don't know about you guys, but i want to see players talk shop and get into it on these videos, but I guess it comes down to personality? Either way, keep it up John, love the interviews
I agree. I don't get it either.
Yea, I really like him. He doesn't have the awkward presence I feel like some of the other hosts have
He's a very good player and knows his stuff. He let's the artist speak. I think he does a great job.
John's great, he's just a bit of a goober. It doesn't lessen his ability or his knowledge, he's just a little bit of a yokel. I find it endearing rather than something over which to make fun of him.
Justin, I agree but why are you bitching?? I scrolled down through a week's comments, and there were like 2 negative comments!!Lololo
The expressions on Eric's face when he plays are just priceless. Wonderful player.
John's as knowledgeable and humble that he allows the artists to be relaxed, taking their time to share about their rigs. Cheers to Bohlinger, and DEEPEST respect to Mr. Gales. He's got a unique way of expanding on his own playing and art as he does recalling guitar's masters (him being a Virtuoso master as well). Thanks PG
"They're kind of pricey but it works for me" - first honest musician ladies and gentlemen!
My wife and I met Eric at a Exp Hendrix show in Florida. He was such a cool guy who took the time to chat and share stories. Such a talent.
Glad to hear Eric is sober, love his playing
Eric Gales = MONSTER.
I was in Strings n Things in Memphis in 1990 shopping for an amp, and this young kid came in, picked up a Strat, flipped it upside down, plugged in and proceeded to blow me away with his playing. The kid was a 16 year old Eric Gales. I will never forget that random experience. And I still have the Marshall Silver Jubilee amp I bought that day.
Love you Eric! Stay Sober and keep growing! People love you man!
I am going to start using "the situation" to describe things in my life now.
Yea, I liked that too!
That was so funny when he kept saying that... The situation. Lol
A flexible word that keeps you out of the hassle of finding the right word
I have the fishman situation in there XD
I use the word gimmick in the same way.
Thanks for another great rig rundown John. This time with the great Eric Gales a favorite of mine. Humble , eloquent and devoted to his craft with an amazingly small rig that allows him to play his heart out which he always does. Congrats Eric on your commitment to your own life and art may you live long and prosper.... Thank you so much!
Congratulations on your new album, loads and loads of talented people collaborating with you. Most of all congratulations on your eight months of clean and sober, stay strong and focused. GOD bless you and keep you strong.
Eric Gales is a Genius and a Kind and Awesome Gentleman and a Great Guitar Player. Boom !
AMEN BRO
I just met Mr. Gales and his bass player in Austin at my work and they were such gentleman. I have been a fan of his for many years and I wish him all the best and I will always support him.
1. LOVE Eric!
2. R.I.P. Mr. Dunlop 😢
Gales is just naturally cool. Great player and performer too! John is my favorite interviewer for this kind of thing.
Beautiful chords and licks after hitting the envelope filter!
This was great. Eric Gales is the sickest player out there right now.
he's the real deal.
My favorite guitar player of all time since I first heard him in 1991. Changed my life and career.
He came out and hung out around the merch table at the Experience Hendrix Tour some years back. He was such a nice and humble guy.
he sold me a CD at the Experience show and I'm glad he did. i love RawDog *BOOM !
same thing happened to me! love the guy!
That riff at 8:28 when he kicked on the fuzz just made my heart melt!!
Nearly brought tears to my eyes! Not even joking.
Mine too, especially the tail end of it starting at 8:38. I figured out that part and I've been trying to learn the rest of the riff since Eric's Rig Rundown came out. His tone also sold me on the Mojo Hand Colossus fuzz too; it's a killer fuzz.
One of the best guitarists on the planet.Love his playing, positive vibe and inspirational story of redemption . Congrats on his 4 years clean and sober and congrats on all his success. My girlfriend and I are in our 11th days of sobriety and loving the we made this decision. People like Eric have inspired us to go this route.
Eric congratulations on your sobriety. Life opens up on a different level. One year today for me.It makes me feel so good to hear someone survive drugs and alcohol and realize how much more there is to life.Ive Always used a tuner since I quit drugs and alcohol I can hear the notes and tones so clear I don't need it one day it was like a switch flipped. Anyways I'm not going back today at least.(I say that every morning).Great job love the Two Rock.Your Strat tone is pure gold.
I've watched this Rig Rundown, at least, 10 times now. And every single time i just get inspired by Eric. The way he plays, sounds and performs gives me energy to play and enjoy the guitar, even more!
I just got a MXR Bass envelope filter....MAN it sounds good. I would have never known without him.
See ya in October #Texel #BOOM
Complete natural sounding musician, I anticipated this rig rundown more than any other. Love you Eric so happy for you.
"Yeah..." he says while nodding like, "I know..."
Eric Gales is a beast.
Finally, Eric Gales ,rig rundown. You made me fix my tone in my strat and amp from listening to you. Thank you. Now I sound bad ass.
ERIC GALES! This MAN is A Super Force, And Can Entertain with Any Artist/BAND. ... He Gives The FANs Ultimate Joy & Happiness of Their LifE TIME.
Mr. Gales is the baddest brother with a Strat since Jimi! No doubt!
Thank you Eric. As a Texas guitarists and bass player I appreciate all you do for music and your passion comes throught every note. You have a new fan.
Eric Denton
Best of luck E.G. Been watching and listening to you and your brothers since the 90's. First saw "Little Jimmy King" at Daiquiri Works on Beale Street. God rest his soul.
Man, those were the days. I still remember the CD release party when you and the brothers played at New Daisy. Keep the blues alive! God bless!
Always enjoyed him. Living legend. Love it.
i love me some RAW DAWG!
been with the whole gales fam since the 90s
ohhh man yes!
he used to hang with lance lopez on the texas/Louisiana connect.
being from nola myself i love the southern fiyya!!!
love ya mr gales!
These are easily the two coolest guys on the internet. DAMN i wish i could hang out with these two in a room!
Homo?
Eric Gales Band played at a club I worked at back in the 90’s, I think he was 17 at the time. SUPER nice guy, the whole band and crew were super nice, too. All these years later and he still doesn’t seem to have an ego 👍🏻👍🏻
Eric Gales is phenomenal. Very humble guy too. Monster talent.
I had never heard of this guys and with-in the first 30 secs of him playing in the intro my jaw hit the floor. so tasty!!!!
Monster talent.
LOVE THIS INTERVIEW !!!
Seems like a good dude....I love when the players demo the sounds.
Love Eric Gales! So happy he's on this path of redemption cuz he is a rare talent, and just a lovely, gentle human. If you love music, and sweet, syrupy tones with the guitar, you must go see him live when you have the chance! Just a transcendent experience. U da man Eric!! \m/ \m/
sorry to hear downtown nashville was just trashed by a tornado. feels like new orleans, hurricane katrina, like the gods must be angry. all blessings to those in struggle, love and peace. thanks, eric gales. love your groove.
Massive talent combined with massive humility.
I usually get bored, and fast foreword a lot when watching these rig rundowns, I just wanna check out the gear, and go...I watched every second of this, an and may watch it again...the time flew by at hyper speed, cause it was interesting...
Best rock/blues guitarist in the world, Eric Gales. No one plays like this guy.
Thank you for showing Eric some love!!!
Cool you nabbed the man himself. Gear review of the year in my book. Eric is one of the most exciting guys to come along in some time. Thanks. John is spot on as usual.
Thanx PG for this one! Massive Eric Gales' fan from France here. The album is just great. The man is a mindblowing artist. I didn't know Eric was playing a french strat! Magneto? Cocoricoooo :))
I saw Eric during the 'Picture' tour when he was 20 yrs old. Boy he killed it that night! I'd love to see him and Ty Tabor jam.
Love your playing Eric, and we are all so proud of you for 8 months clean and sober. Now thats a big Boom. You did it man, one day at a time and it does get easier because you remember the bad times. Nowhere but up from here. Congrats on the new album. Ill be getting it asap.
I have the EWS Brute Drive and it smokes. Eric is the most exciting player on the scene today. So glad he has overcome his demons and I hope he is in the same bracket as EJ and JB soon as he should be. EG’s brother was a master blues player too may he Rest In Peace.
Mr. Gales is a beast! Congrats on your sobriety sir, hope you're still holding strong! I struggle daily.
Every video... love this guy more and more. He still terrifies me with his playing.
Incredible player .. love when he blends gospel and jazz / rock.. so sweet
Loved it! What a great interview, had me smiling all the way.
Eric seems like hes a great person. Just an all around good guy.
Finally 🙌 what a legend. My favourite guitar & super nice guy
Amazingly talented this dude, and great interview by Mr. Bohlinger as usual!
So cool he uses Fishman singles. I love mine on my strat. You can’t go wrong with Lollar either. Love Eric’s playing
6:16 - 6:22 Was Mr Bohlinger taking a crap or something. That noise he was making haha!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I thought I read "talking crap" then when I re-read it and realized it was "taking a crap" I had to go back and listen 'cause I didn't remember anything weird. Then I heard it and started laughing so freakin' hard my wife came in from the other room and asked what was so funny- I told her it was hard to explain- but man- talk about ROTFLMAO!
So the f what, let him take a crap.
@@yjmsrv same here xD LMAO
John is known to spontaneously fart during conversations, whether on video or a private talk. He likes to see if anybody reacts. He interviewed Pete Townshend about a year ago and farted. Pete called him out on it and ended the interview. Pete was furious, called John some terrible names, turned to the camera and cussed out the audience. It must have been a doozy lol!
Eric Gales and Doyle jr. are the best things going for me these days!
I have never heard someone use an envelope filter like he did at 9:08. That sounded fantastic!!
Dude is a FREAK in the best way!!!
Congratulations on your sobriety."One Day at A Time"I'm with you MAN!!
Great guitar player.I'm a lefty and trying to learn. But I had to buy an actual left handed guitar.Wish I would have learned the Jimi Hendrix style. That's cool.
dalec03 He does the righty upside down without flipping the strings. Insane the way his bends and runs sound. Hendrix flipped a righty but then flipped the strings like most "normal" players have them.
dalec03 I'm a lefty too ! Jimmy actually played with the strings "the right way" just used a right handed guitar with the strings flipped!
dalec03 you both are ignorant pieces of shit. First, it is spelled "Jimi" not "Jimmy", and secondly hendrix did not play like gales, he played with the string normally strung on a RH guitar flipped upside down
Jimi didn't paly with the guitar strung upside down. Albert King did.
Killer interview with a monster player! Love Eric Gales man!
John's a hell of a guitar player too. :)
I really enjoyed watching this interview, great questions and answers. I've been watching these various interviews and they're always quite good.
Congrats on the new lease on life, Raw Dog! Keep rocking!
More of these rig rundowns need to include the artist demoing his sounds. This was great. And for the record JB does a great job in these and product reviews.
Love these two fellas....Incredible talent Eric #BOOM
If I can put my opinion out there... I heard him through his signature DV Mark Raw Dawg amp and I highly suggest you actually meet him again once the amp comes out. It's truly astonishing.
I recently came across Eric Gales and dig his style and life’s story
Love the riff at 9:10. I listened to this several times and want it to be its own song!
It's the kinda similar to the melody for Eric Gales' song 'Boogie Man '
I totally agree about the Fishman coils! I swapped out my strats coils for these and the sound improvement has been phenomenal!
Great tones and what a nice guy!
So my question is what hasnt Fender stepped up and given this man..His own signature..model...WHY..FENDER..WHATSUP
yea weird cus i thought he had his own but his signature from a diff company
Fender is kind of not that great to a lot of artists. They're reallyc orporate so a lot of artists find no love from them. Greg Koch was talking to Fender when he was with them about those Fishman pickups and they were just not interested at all.
Typically when you partner with a builder, like Fender, they want you exclusive their brand. There have been bad blood from famous musicians and fender.
I.E Mayer...he rolled out quick
Eric's face says it ALL when he's playing!
I like that he's not a guitar nut. Like, he knows what he's got and how to use it, but he's not some expert who can tell you about the type of solder on the 5 way switch or some shit. He just seems like a guy who picked up a guitar a year ago and was magically good at it.
Mmm... very nice, very very interesting! I love this guitar, his signature he's playing here. He's a beast of a guitar player, top shelf!
Man I love him. Monster player and a great attitude.
Best rig rundown yet with a total genius guitar player. Philip Sayce next please.
Holy moly,
the Premier Guitar Rig rundowns are so great! Thank you for doing that!
But you often ignore the Bass Player!!!! In this Video the outstanding Cody Wright is playing Bass.
Why you ignore him? Please don´t do that anymore !!!! Help us Bassplayers!
Thanks
Uli
Such a cool guy
Love your music and stay clean, as your music is also cleaner. Much love!
The first chord with the wammy brought me back to playing Super Mario World.
God Bless you Eric Gales!!
Been waiting for this one! Thank Eric and John
Eric such a cool guy
Love Eric - I met him in Seattle at the Jimi Hendrix 60th birthday party concert - that was hmmm 2002
Gales and Buckethead are in their own orbit, both are out of this world.
Growing up in the MidWest everybody played instruments. Basements-Garages just walking down the street no telling what you would hear. Every day people doing not for love of music.
eric gales should be on the cover of guitar magazines..this guy can play and and jam .
Seems like such a super cool dude to hang out with, I gotta see him live at one point!
Eric is on the same list as John Mayer for: Guys I gotta see live before I die.
fishman situation
Love that dude! EG!!! Raw Dawg!!
Got the pleasure to sell EG his tour vehicle . Such a cool dude !! He actually lives down the street from me come to find out , and ladona is such a nice lady too .
Love this man.
Love his playing
