When I was a child...like 11 years old, my father bought me a N64 and this game came with it. As a low-middle class Mexican boy, for me that was really something BIG in my life. My old man did his effort to get me my own N64. I was fascinated with the graphics, music and everything else. I remember with a smile and some tears in my eyes that he (my dad) used to watch me play in our livingroom. And he was also amused with the "realism" of the game. He died in 2013 and I still miss him A LOT. So, sometimes I get to see this video to remember him, to remember better days. Thank you for uploading it! :') Edit: Thanks everyone for your support and for taking the time to read about my old man. I hope you're going well trough this hard times. Bless from Monterrey México.
When i was a kid me and my dad played this alot together .. My dad died last Christmas so its really good to look back on this game with the music and all rip dad
Oh my god my dad died and I used to play it with him when I was a kid. And now I discovered it in his old stuff this weekend. And there are just soo many memories. Also I'm sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear about your dad :( I have a similar thing with Wave Race and my dad who passed away a couple of years ago. He never played video games, but he loved this. We played it a hell of a lot around 1997 when I was 12.
This game has such a warm atmosphere. The announcer plus the music never fails to put a smile on my face. Couple that with the water that still looks good to this day, and this is one game I go back to often
I was 6 when the N64 game out in 96, and I got this game in the 90s, and I was obviously still a kid... I always thought the graphics was like the best thing ever in video game history. However I can see how dated they are looking at them now, but still not too bad.
They so were. Going from 16-bit 2D games to this was mind blowing for me. I think Waverace 64 was the first time I thought a game looked ‘real’. I’d use my imagination a bit in those days to fill in the gaps but on the whole the water etc seemed so realistic. Waverace 64 is really special to me.
We had never seen water like this before, it was hard to believe. Especially the idea of there being physics associated with the water and the way the waves interacted with the player. One of the defining games of the N64 for sure. Prior to this most water effects was just a 2d plane with a texture shader and splash sprites that followed the character as they moved through it.
this was perhaps the first 3D videogame I saw in real life back in 96. I was stunned. The water physics were like the real deal!, or so I thought. I know it looks dates but part of me that remember that first impression of child-me never forgets. Thats the privilegue of being born with the advent of 3D graphics in videogames and movies. In the 90s the VFX and 3d graphics became ubiquitous.@@schwarg note that my first console was the NES so my baseline for comparison was 8 to 16-bit nintendo graphics. My first videogame ever (never gonna forget) was Super Mario Bros. When i finally got my 64 after months of watching and playing in my neighbors home, it came with mario 64 but I wasn't that excited (i already played and not understood the hype gameplay wise--- i know, stupid... but i was amazed at the graphics... i think i was frustrated because it was difficult the 3D platformer mechanics). my neighbors got excited about mario 64 because they didn't get that game, so i became excited too! i quickly fell in love. but man i was waiting for OoT after watching the trailer. And when my uncle brought me the game as a gift I was the happiest kid ever. I remember the first time I saw the Ocarina of time trailer in cartoon networks. Goddamn its like I saw GOD. Never in my life I imagined graphics like that! Kids born post-2000 would never understand the true revolution that Zelda OOT meant to the game industry.
People just will never know. There is no words to describe just the hype and excitement you had as a kid merely watching the intro screen demo around. Sure we had seen stuff like doom, and some older 3d fps PC games...but the sense of exploration and thrill of pacing in a 3d environment so rich looking was unheard of. Moments like after or day after Christmas, going to a friend's house and seeing it in person for yourself finally. Just watching the screen going this is real...were really alive for the peak of gaming. The soon to be seen screenshots of things like Mario Kart/007/Turok were beautiful renders that made us know we were in for a great time. Like wow this is real, videos games have broken this barrier now. Had no idea we were at the turning point of it being the norm and couldn't even fathom something like a Uncharted game or shoot...like a gta5. We were hardly ready for wave racer. Knowing one day we could spend hours/days in a sandbox city larger than some of our own homes, and live out a fulfilling virtual life would've given an aneurysm.
haha that N64 feeling was incredible. Had the most amazing feeling and emotion when I saw the Banjo Kazooie Box with that awesome picture. Best game ever
i’m 10 years old and just woke up on a summer morning in 1999. the house smells like the waffle iron heating up. the sun is shining through the window as the n64 boots up and I try to quickly eat the cut up apples and bananas my mom made me so I can focus on playing and not rushing to eat the fruit before it turns brown.
I feel so ashamed of myself, how the hell did i forget about this amazing game. I used to play it for ages too. The graphics although dated here was ahead of its time with the water effects & physics, this game had some nice atmostphere & music too.

This was one of the first games I played on the N64. Often raced against my brother back in the day. Sadly he's gone now, but this game brought back good memories. Thanks Nintendo.
This is how I was introduced to the 64. It had just came out and I was at my dad’s cousins house. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I was hooked and never looked back. Then came extreme G, golden eye and star fox. This made my childhood the best

the "sunny beach" theme song is my favorite from gameplay perspective, it just gives me this feeling of nostalgia and sadness at the same time, knowing we will never get these type of games anymore, as well as the quality soundtrack.
I rented this game at Blockbuster literally once when I was 7 but for some reason I remember playing this game and this make me feel so nostalgic. I don’t know why but also there’s something really relaxing about watching this...? Haha
I played this game all the time growing up! I was 8 when this came out. I just got the N64 pass for the Switch and god I felt like I was a kid again!!! Thank God for the retro game passes!
14:23 I always loved this part when you kind of grind on top of the ship, like a "kiss the rail" move. So much to say about this game but that is a small fun memory I remember
First n64 game ever. My neighbohood friend just set the system up. I was 11. I eventually got the 64 the next xmas. These comments are all spot on. So much nostalgia. Damn this game was so good. 😢😊
I loved this game as a kid. As side note I loved dirt bikes and was a Suzuki/Honda type of kid. This game with the Kawasaki logos and it’s fun atmosphere, and the “Let The Good Times Roll” led me to being a Kawi guy.
My big brother and I played this religiously as kids. He sent me this link and I flipped when I opened the video lol this brings back a lot of good memories
Havent played this game in years. Nostalgia typically makes games look better in your memories than they really did, but somehow the water in this game looks better than I remember.
I was digging through some old stuff around my house and found this game. I sold off everything else n64 related almost 20 years ago. What memories this brings back.
My cousins had this game on the Nintendo 64, and we used to always jam to the watercraft select music it has that rocky edgy sound to it, that was good memories, and also whenever the announcer introduces the next course to play the music that plays during that part sounds like the intro to a 90s ballad, it sounds nice and very nostalgic, but this game was fun to play!
NGL, I didn't play much of this. However, it brings back memories of more fun times when I was at college. I had a PS1 and a friend had a N64. We both lived alone. Our 2nd year, I moved into his apartment, and the composite library of games that was formed made 9am lectures a force to be reckoned with! 😴🥱. What I remember about this game was the delightful music 🎶😊 and me racing my butt off and getting _"you almost had it.."_ 😒. ( I came here for that, but you're too good! 🤷 ). Newly explored 2-player options, buttered popcorn and Pepsi max. Good times! 😢. Great video! Nicely played! 👍. - LFCB.

Man this and hydro thunder had the best water effects of its time. I remember playing both with my dad countless hours on the weekends!!!
Still a beautiful game to this day, especially considering what it is.
This one hits hard
I loved this game as a kid. As side note I loved dirt bikes and was a Suzuki/Honda type of kid. This game with the Kawasaki logos and it’s fun atmosphere, and the “Let The Good Times Roll” led me to being a Kawi guy.
Im so glad that Today is now available on Nintendo Switch. WHAT A MEMORIES! ❤️😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️
My big brother and I played this religiously as kids. He sent me this link and I flipped when I opened the video lol this brings back a lot of good memories
Oh the memories! I did tricks on every single jump and still won every race! XD
Except for when I crashed my cocky jumps on the last lap. :P
Man this shyt bring back memories always gave me a feel of out run and Zelda with the music great game wow I’m getting old lol
Havent played this game in years. Nostalgia typically makes games look better in your memories than they really did, but somehow the water in this game looks better than I remember.
This was the first game i had as a kid with the n64 back in 97
This was such a good game. So exhilarating.
I was digging through some old stuff around my house and found this game. I sold off everything else n64 related almost 20 years ago. What memories this brings back.
My whole family passed away and this game reminds me of every single one them watching me play this game, oh the nostalgia.
How many attempted the dolphin dive/jump?!?
On Southern Island? It's pretty much the key to victory on expert setting.
Me that’s the one way to win the race
This game has HEART.
I wish I could’ve experienced this game. I love these graphics and music.
Amazung riding tex! You are a true ocean cowboy!
Oh man 🥰🥴💜 brings back warm feelings.
My cousins had this game on the Nintendo 64, and we used to always jam to the watercraft select music it has that rocky edgy sound to it, that was good memories, and also whenever the announcer introduces the next course to play the music that plays during that part sounds like the intro to a 90s ballad, it sounds nice and very nostalgic, but this game was fun to play!
so much nostalgia in this video...as cheesy as the soundtrack was/is.. i still love it.. almost brought tears to my eyes..
cheesy? Those where the intro's back in those days. Listen to the Beverly Hills 990210 and BayWatch intro.
Soundtrack and Announcers were ahead of their time
NGL, I didn't play much of this.
