I have an unmolested 02 S2K with the standard gray and combination with 105k miles. The car feels and drives like it still new. An amazing and intoxicating experience even in basic form. On my list I have a hard top, new rims (currently on AP2s), and a list of upgrades for the engine and suspension. No turbos.

Even though money is getting tight, even though I have no time this year (and probably next year) to go to car meets or drives, I'm not selling, ever. It's the best car I've ever driven and I know once I sell it, I'll probably never have one again.

Bought my 2001 AP1 last year for 14.5k. Its my dream car since I was in high school. I remember sitting in a black S2Ks drivers seat and felt the cockpit...I knew I had to buy this car. I eventually saved up enough money. Saw one one sale on the facebook group for 16k...worked down to 14. Got my best friend to drive it home. The car was painted GPX White, soft top had holes, 167k miles and engine was rebuilt by the previous owner. I eventually got to work on the car, replacing the soft top, new RPFI1s, Bridgestone potenza re71rs tires, ohlins track and road coilovers, flushed all the fluids, OEM axles since it had aftermarket ones, and valve adjustment. The car drives so smooth with upgrade tires and suspension...one of the first things Id reccomend doing. The car handles like a dream in the mountains. The car already came with Invidia Q300 exhaust and K&N CAI which makes the VTEC sound amazing. Its my weekend car so I don't drive it too much since its not as practical as my daily auto civic. When I do drive it I remember why I love this car so much, It makes me feel alive. Something about driving with the top down and VTEC screaming up to 9000k RPMs is such an experience. Its not the fastest car but it sure is a lot of fun to drive. I don't want it to be the fastest car or I would've gotten something newer or a car with more displacement. Buy this car for the experience and cherish how good this car is.

I bought my 07 Laguna in 2008 drove sunny days only. Only mods were prodrive wheels with a better stance, Greddy dual exhaust, cold air intake and Hondata flash pro. This car was the most fun compared to anything else I have ever driven.Smoothest shifting transmission by far. Sold it in 2020 since I wasn’t driving it enough and had other priorities. Lots of cars out there with more power but I can tell you all of my friends that I took for a good burn could not believe it was only a 4 cyl. Kicking myself to this day for selling it. Even though I sold it for way more than I bought for originally. I also kept all original parts so I could put back to stock in a couple hours.

Just my 2 cents for people that are not aware when dreaming of that s2k like i did and after i bought it. realize that both ap 1 and soon to be ap2 will be approaching 20 or have crossed over 20 years. And like anything else, regardless of miles, things break and / or wear out. With that said, you will find most parts for s2ks have been discontinued by honda because thats what they do and they dont care even if its a popular model. Sure they make many after market stuff but youll find out how hard it is to find a part when you really need it because the dealer told you no longer available and forced to buy used. My sterring control module went out and was told by the dealer we found the problem bad news they dont make the part. Tell me if you find one to replace it and reprogram it if you can. I did but really sucked to know i would have owed an aluminum brick if i couldnt find one.

I’ve seen multiple for sale near me under $10k (North Carolina) and they have pretty minor issues (torn soft top, leaks here and there, etc.). As for not being able to find parts for them, also exaggerated. I own an AP1 and finding parts for it is relatively cheap and they’re available everywhere. This car isn’t a 4th generation Supra…

That one is gone now but I replaced it with 2006 model that only had 18k miles on it for $16,000. That one now has a fully built motor and can rev to 12k rpm. It sits in my garage and only gets driven for a weeks during summer. I have an AMG C63S as well the one garage spot I have goes to the S2000 and it’s the car that’s most fun to drive. When someone says this car does not have enough hp or torque , I say exactly where are you driving it now and pushing it to its limit ??? That would requre top speeds of over 130mph and frequent drops to below 60 . Also many power upgrades , degrades precise throttle control an important trait when driven on back , public roads with telephone poles all around you if you get my gist .
The USA has great tracks but :
1: You don't live near one
2: You have to pay a yearly fee plus a fee each time you race
3: You may have to purchase some kind of special insurance
4: If you do it often , you may have to pay for some engine rebuilds and other costly stuff
Conclusion : 99% of S2000 users performance enhancements are just for show . With its mid engine design , if you put a 6k rev limit on it , and drove it like you stole it , you would be
much faster then most people dare . That's because how much hp you need depends on how much you had to slow down in a corner . With its mid engine configuration , you're not slowing down much on corner exit so you can be up to high speeds again without much power .

S2000 good value is long gone. Anything under $20k is likely to be unreliable or poor body or both. Even in today’s overpriced Miata market, they’re much better value, more reliable, and not much slower.

  • @christopherlowery855
    @christopherlowery855 Год назад +3

Love the S2K, yes! $12k was a hard swallow for me back in 2005. These cars have since maintained that value, or doubled/trippled it 18yrs later. As a former owner of 4 civics, I fell in love with Honda. In 98 I kept saying "if only Honda built a RWD car that wasn't the NSX". In 2003, I was saying "If only the S2K was affordable". That was 20yrs ago. Most of them for sale today are collectors items and the rest are all treated like new cars. This thing was $32k new. In 20yrs, its depreciated a measly 37%? Why is the rich man's miata treated like a Ferarri F40?
For now, this car is just a dream. I already own a miata that puts one of these to shame. While I spent $12k for a PWR of .13, you guys want to spend $20k for a PWR of .08?
Same handling, same speed, more fun... more work. But, wrenching is part of the enthusiast diet. If money is no object, hands down a better pick. Unfortunately for most of us, thats not the case.
Another note, who's financing a 20yr old car thses days? I had to get a personal loan from my bank for my miata. You're looking at a 3yr loan max. With 3.5% APR, $20k amounts to $586/mo for a 20yr old vehicle with 20yr old vehicle problems.
I guess if you have the money to burn, you do you.
Overall, I agree with the video title. Yes, I want an S2K, I just don't want to pay the S2K collectors item tax for one.
That topless part was priceless. Same with the "sugar free redbull" bit, lol.
Agreed, always better to go topless, preferrably, with a rollbar... sexy.
    Great vid as always

I have a bone stock AP2 with 51k miles… can’t decided if I want to mod it and keep it or just sell it and move on. It’s a great car, frankly it’s one of the all time great JDM… but it’s by no means perfect. Driving position is perfect if you’re between 5’4” and 5’8”, steering wheel is fixed so you can’t tilt or telescopic adjust. The brakes are typical 90s soft and doesn’t inspire the same level of confidence as more modern brakes. The shifter is one of the greats but steering feel is non existent.
A lot of the issues can be fixed or “bring up to code”, but the new ND2 Miata is finally a better car objectively.

Talk to a HONDA Certified Mechanic, and you will buy a MIATA or MR2 instead...

I have one, incredibly weak. Even in its hay-day, weak. Hp, decent, at 6500-7500rpm but probably about 130-170hp before that. Torque is an incredible joke. A civic of same year can keep up. The only way it can become somewhat competitive is if you throw a turbo on it which just destroys the engine.

How does a turbo destroy the engine, this engines can handle 600-700whp safely with proper tuning and supporting mods..

For its price, its not worth it over a miata. Period.
