I've watched a few - you totally nailed it! I like the comparatively lighter feel to other heavier versions here on RUclips, and GREAT to see the kick beater coming off the head.
Solid performance, man! Love it! I want to learn to finger drum this song and your video will help a lot, thanks! It looks very challenging, but maybe I'll get there one day!
This is one of those songs that unless your a drummer or have a drummer's ear so to speak, you kinda miss the amazing beat this song has... there's a lot more going on than you think it is... Vocals and keyboards are so powerful with toto, you kinda get caught up in just that... at least I did , with a lot of there songs, like hold the line , it's so strong , until you here the cymbals crash it's like oh yeah the drums sound cool too.. but watching someone play it or isolate the drum track, then you really start to appreciate the drums.... loved the cover man, spot on.... very clean, thank u for sharing
All I wanna do when I wake up in the morning is see your eyes Rosanna, Rosanna I never thought that a girl like you could ever care for me Rosanna All I wanna do in the middle of the evening is hold you tight Rosanna, Rosanna I didn't know you were looking for more than I could ever be Not quite a year since you went away Rosanna, yeah Now she's gone, and I have to say Meet you all the way Meet you all the way Rosanna, yeah Meet you all the way Meet you all the way Rosanna, yeah I can see your face still shining through the window on the other side Rosanna, Rosanna I didn't know that a girl like you could make me feel so sad Rosanna All I wanna tell you is now you'll never ever have to compromise Rosanna, Rosanna I never thought that losing you could ever hurt so bad Not quite a year since you went away Rosanna, yeah Now she's gone, and I have to say Meet you all the way Meet you all the way Rosanna, yeah Meet you all the way Meet you all the way Rosanna, yeah Not quite a year since you went away (Who is it?) *the big oversight with Jeff Porcaro's playing is his 'lope' as he calls it* I examined his Rosanna groove on my DAW and he actually slows down for the first half of the bar and speeds up to compensate in the last beat 3-4. He does this pretty consistently. So this gives you the fat solid groove leading to the snare hit on 3 then the waterfall of slightly rushed ghost notes leading everyone directly to the 1. This is a traditional way of playing the Son Clave where the 1 is dragged a bit. Rosanna is a 3-2 Son Clave played as a double speed half time shuffle. (for example: Bo-Diddly is a regular speed shuffle feel over the Clave but is not half-time, the Clave is double time as compared to Rosanna)
Thanks! The whole kit is a Starclassic Performer. It's interesting, because obviously my snare sound is on top of Jeff Porcaro's original snare sound. So actually, you're hearing a 'mix' of 2 snares.
@@DrummerMartijn Oh wow, I can't even tell you didn't use a drumless track. Jeff used a metal snare too, but I can't hear any over laps, or flams al all. I wasn't sure if he put the snare on every other back beat. I guess not
@@bubinga_basher Hi, I just noticed I actually gave you the wrong info! In this particular video I'm not playing with my Tama snare, but with my Gretsch Renown (14x6,5)! Sorry for that! Typically I use this snare with my Ludwig kit, but sometimes I change things up.
@@DrummerMartijn I think I'm just confused, but if I remember correctly there should be a kick in unison with every second snare hit, or at least this is how Jeff plays it in his famous instructional video. Maybe the studio track is different though edit: typos
I just checked that instructional video and you're correct: when Jeff's explaining his version of the Bo Diddly beat he's definitely playing a kick together with the 2nd snare. However, I've transcribed the Rosanna drum parts by ear by using the 'solo drums' version(s). I'm pretty sure he's not playing that unison thing here. Cause you can't really miss those bass drum freqs (or at least, I hope lol).
@@DrummerMartijn oh I see, makes perfect sense, thanks for the info! I was just curious. Awesome performance btw, you nailed it no matter what. Super smooth, groovy and clean 🤘🏻
the dynamics and some parts are not nailed.. attention to details.. pls. refer to Maestro Michael Alba Toto drum cover.. 🙂 but anyway great job men! enjoy watching you!
Thanks! Still, I dare to say that my version is a 98% accurate drum cover. Because I transcribed the 'isolated drum track' note by note (on 25%-75% speed) myself. Though I did leave out a couple of 'ruffs' in the chorus, I think I hit almost any other detail along the way. Same thing for the dynamics. Then again, I'm obviously not Jeff Porcaro, I'm fully aware of that!
@@DrummerMartijn yes, i totally agree with you, that you really sound good and it's hard. actually the intro to verse part, if you try to really pay attention to the details, there is no ghost note yet, except on the 4th beat, and some fills and kick part of the song needs to be solid. i say this because even me i really find not that comfortable yet in playing this. but my teacher Michael alba, thought us this note per note, i really still need to practice to nail it. but still kudos! for making this video great with good audio and vid quality. 🙂
About the ghost notes: I agree you don't hear them in the studio recording, only on the 4th beat. But if you listen to the isolated drum track, I believe they are actually there on every beat, just played very, VERY soft. Also in Porcaro's own explanation (=famous video on RUclips) he plays them himself. Therefore, I choose to play them right from the start. But yes, it's debatable for sure. Too bad we can't ask Jeff himself ;-)
@@DrummerMartijn impressive! I like your attitude in handling positive criticism. it will really help us to improve more. yah, the famous vid in youtube. he played it differently. but i think what he tried to communicate was the main groove of the song. hehe.. anyhow, want to see more videos like this from you. ☺😎 if given a chance you can also do this song again.. for me, i know you can really nailed it flawlessly! yeah!
One of the hardest grooves to get right. You nailed it Martijn!
The triple would be hard to do I reckon
Very hard song to play this right. You played this very well!!
One of the few covers out there that get the swing feel right.
Well done!
This song is my nemesis. It has improved me as a drummer. Because a challenge and frustration are fuel for the fire.
Lol! I get what you mean. This was a tough one...
The best part is the smile after nailing the fills 😂 awesome cover!

Great job on the ghost notes!
Agree here! Many people play it like they're doin triplets rather than a tasty shuffle~!
This is definitely one of the closest covers to the original I’ve seen, covering exactly like Jeff would be impossible but you did a great job.
Oh wow. This is absolutely amazing and inspirational. Well done

Is the last/third kick purposely missing from the main beat to avoid suppression of the snare sound?
