This was such a great show, and Kane was a great antagonist. A very complex character, who loved his daughter dearly, yet was willing to commit mass genocide.
Yes, but his leadership is very similar to a dictatorship. He was willing to demolish a building that still had people inside. Yes, he is not pure evil, and he truly believes that he is doing the right thing for delux. The problem is he is willing to destroy homes and lives to keep his empire strong. Julie would be a better leader, because she wouldn't go to the extremes that Kane would go to reach her goals. She would try and bring delux and motorcity together and build a better world from there. It's all about compromise.
Considering the episode where Kane used the citizens of his own city as weapons against the Burners by controlling their bodies using specialized suits in way that would have mean their deaths if not for the Burners, it's clear Kane doesn't care about the people of Delux, just controlling the city. As is the case with people who kill others and their own in the name of their side.
I think the best thing about Kane is his leadership juxtaposed with Mike’s. While both are willing to do anything to make sure their people are safe, Mike knows the fine line between protection and dictatorship. Kane protects his people by control, he fundamentally disagrees with the prospect of freedom because he thinks it’s dangerous, he cares about his creation but it’s to the point where anything that isn’t from his city is a threat. He also believes, much like Thanos that the toughest choices require the strongest of wills, he knows what people like Mike, Motorcity, even his own daughter thinks of him but to him it doesn’t matter because anything is better than the alternative. Mike on the other hand is willing to protect both the city and his crew without completely controlling them, he gives them the freedom to do their own thing with only suggestions and advice. The only time he’s actually in complete control is when he’s leading the crew into a battle and he doesn’t mind people from the different side, he understands that his war is with Kane and Kane alone not the people that reside within Deluxe. Another thing that makes Kane a good villain is the fact that even without his gadgets and robots he still has the physical advantage when it comes to Mike, I mean Mikes just a small guy with a big heart while Kane has the same size arms as the actual the big red machine himself (get it… I’m here every night folks) Just wanted to write my thoughts on the matter, I haven’t watched much but from what I have watched of this series I thoroughly enjoy and that is what I’ve got from the stuff I’ve watched regarding this show.
"Visionary" is a fine choice of word here. Mind you I have never seen this series, though I think I might look into it now. He is a what I consider a prime example of the D&D alignment of "Lawful Evil". though this video (which is all I have to go on at the time of writing this) doesn't depict him directly controlling, manipulating or ordering people (save the initial interactions) it is established that he has has created a society that WORKS, and is sustaining itself, and he is working to find a reasonable heir to let it continue. He has a code, he has created laws, and so long as people follow then, they are left alone. The "Evil" Component comes from what he is willing to do to remain in power, spread his control, and fight opposition. He is willing to do anything it takes to achieve his goals. The complexity comes from the one thing he may love more than his position, his daughter. What is interesting is that even HE sees she would make a great leader...and she confirms it by initially refusing...the best leaders often don't WANT that power or responsibility. It is true, being a leader, ruler, commander, manager means that, at some point you WILL have to make a difficult choice that affects subordinates negatively. Bad leaders callously rationalize the ends justifying the means. Good ones will empathize with those affected. GREAT leaders may have no choice but they do everything in their power to mitigate the losses or suffering, and take personal responsibility for the outcome.
Also, I feel like is important to note that, part of the reason why Kane hates Motorcity so much and wants to replace it with it's vision, is because Motorcity WORKS. Motorcity is not by any means perfect, but it is clear that the society that exist below Deluxw is ond that works. This rubs Kane in a wrong way because this make Motorcity an ALTERNATIVE to Deluxe: "Don't like Deluxe, well Motor ity is just down there" He knows some people will inevitably chose Motorcity over Deluxe, and this is way Motorcity has to burn.
I’d compare Kane more to Clu than Tesler. While Clu is vicious and cruel in his own right he does it to fulfill his programming. To create and maintain a perfect system in his and his user’s eyes. If it means a few programs have to die or get repurposed so be it. As long as the system is perfect to Clu the ends justify the means. Tesler seems to be just downright selfish. He kills without reason or remorse, he lies and manipulates he even mentions how the programs will do nothing because “I am the state”. He’s a power hungry maniac that kills simply because he can and wants to. Kane is the same as Clu. Yes he may be cruel and vicious around Motorcity but everything he does and every life he takes and controls is for the betterment of Deluxe, just like Clu with the grid. Both are delusional and stubborn to a flaw though. Clu hated ISOs because they weren’t programmed but more… born. With will of their own. They have no users, no pre written code or directives. They’re different and so in the eyes of an ai that’a very reason of being is a perfect system they’re imperfect and a threat to the system he’s trying to create. Kane is the same. He can’t think of a world of coexistence because that lead to the wasteland that Deluxe is protecting everyone from. Freedom, choice, independence? All dangerous, all different and unpredictable and therefore a threat to the system Kane has worked so hard to build. They’re both visionaries that can’t see anything else but the end goal. People who want to make the perfect system with imperfect and flawed people.
Kane was definitely one of the reasons why I got into Motorcity in the first place, he didn't make any hesitations on the decisions he's made. Anyways, once again thanks for making this, I will definitely give you a shout-out for doing this (The shout-out will be posted on another site). ^-^
I know people like the stories where the heroes win, but in my head-canon I like to think that Kane got the upper hand. Despite it being cancelled, Motorcity had a better ending because of it. The heroes don't always win. This could be a perfect example. I'm sure season 2 would've opened up with someone saving Mike and Kane being defeated by the skin of his teeth, but that would honestly be boring. The villain winning would be perfect. Chilton survives the fall and he and the Burners go into hiding because of Motorcity's destruction. Kane wins. Bacause, in my opinion, this is Abraham Kane's story, just from the perspective of the people he's hurt because his character has the stomach to make the hard decisions. He's a well developed character and Mark Hamil played him to perfection. I would honestly describe his and Chilton's relationship as being lawful evil and lawful good. The difference being for Chilton, quoted from Sentinel Prime, "You were always the bravest of us, but you could never make the hard decisions". Whereas Kane goes all out to protect Detroit but instead created a dictatorship. But in my opinion and head-canon, Kane won in the end. I wish this show was given a chance, but it was a blessing in disguise that it ended.
Actually the seried still ends with Kane's defeat. Right after Mike is thrown by Kane in the final scene of this video, he's rescued by Duke who was piloting his car. And that leads to the final Battle of the episode where all their allies in Motorcity help destroy the genesis pod that was going to convert them into part of delux. Sure, it wasn't a CONCLUSIVE defeat, but Kane was still defeated for the time being.
He kinda reminds me of Dr. Eggman A super genius visionary with robots who takes over the world and has to deal with teenage resistance who like going fast
Mark Hamill is they best voice of evil in a loooooong time. Kane, Kill Croc, Fire Lord Ozai, Hobgoblin, The Joker. The list just goes on and on and on.
How come when people talk about Mark Hamil performances, it's either Joker or Luke Skywalker. I know those are the roles he's most famous for but I love his other roles too. Like playing himself in Jay and Silent Bob strike back, Kane, some of his minor roles like Undergrowth and the shape shifter and one of the more obscure roles like Skeleton King. He's an amazing voice actor.
