The Featherweight is a very collectable machine. I had one. The buttonholer makes wonderful buttonholes. I used to go around twice to make sure they were reinforced. Im so sorry I let it get away from me.

It's really fun to see these old machines. Even though I sew on a much more modern machine, I love the design and simplicity of the older ones. It's wonderful that people are refurbishing them for use.

Keep the oil can. There should be a place inside the carrying case that holds the oil can. I believe you can empty the can, clean it out and put new oil in it.
I had same problem with smell. I put a dehumidifier pellets inside a small bucket and pulled the moisture out of the case and then put lavender essential oil inside cotton balls in case and left the case slightly open for a couple weeks. It got

I scored on a Featherweight at a garage sale with the intention of parting it out and making $$$. However, the machine, although looking rough, worked like a dream. It has become my favorite machine to use. They were built to do one thing and do it well, and that is exactly why it's still going strong. Now I want another one! 😂

I tried different methods to get rid of that smell. I sprayed the inside with OdoBan and left it in the sun for a week. I closed it and put an unwrapped bar of soap in it. I placed dryer sheets in it and that helped eliminate t some of the smell that it’s not as pungent. I changed the dryer sheets out every 5 days for a month and now the smell is less noticeable that I can have it in my sewing space. I think the dryer sheets worked best for me. What a treasure you found.

I bought the Featherweight's cousin the Singer 301A for $30. I refurbished the motor. Cleaned and lubed it and it is a wonderful sewer. Enjoy your legendary machine.

It has been said that the smell is from the felt lining under the machine. Take off the bottom and replace or clean that lining that has collected oil and dirt.

The old lubricants do degrade, and new stuff is not expensive. The Featherweight Shop has modern grease specifically designed for the right melting temp for the motor. The original stuff doesn't melt as fast, so it doesn't lubricate as well as the newer stuff. Have fun! When I got my machine, I thought it was gold plated. Nope, it was coated in nicotine. You can imagine what the case smelled like...

Please don't use any old grease or oil in your sewing machine. In this video, I used regular zoom spout oil. And, I've already ordered the Sew Retro grease for the potted motor! Thanks again for watching.

I'd get rid of the grease and oil. If you want to save them, put them in something so they don't leak. Grab yourself a handful of Bounce Fabric Softener sheets and leave them in the empty case for several months. It worked in my case!

Great looking machine. Be careful using a cotton swab. Sometimes the fibers will come off and jam something up. Also the lube on the gears needs to be very little. 1 dab should do it. Thanks for sharing your machine video.

I prefer the 401 to 500 series Singer. Those were the last of the all metal slant shanks. You don't need cams for most of those models if they had the built in zig zag. Oil is integral to the metal machines. It is messy but you only use a drop. Don't use the older oil. Kept it as a souvenir??? N,oh don't think so. There is probably a musty odor to the carrying case and that odor will not come out. Its a permanent smell. I'm fairly certain those weren't leather cases so saddle soap isn't going to do much. Anything else is just masking the odor. My father worked for Singer in the 60's and I've been around Singer machines for a bit. If you don't sew, flip it.

The featherweight cases are known for their smell. Use a potpourri, mothballs, thin cedar slats, dryer sheets, other scent remover. I'd never part with my featherweight over that issue, that can be dealt with..

Don't use the lubricants. They do get old. It isn't worth the potential risk of using something that has broken down over all these years. Sewing machine oil is clear, and yellows with age. Enjoy your new machine!
