That's because the point of the 14 july parade is not really to show the strength of the military but more to show the respect from the civilians to the soldiers and the fact that the army is under the law of the Republic and at the service of the people. That's why there were not only soldiers in the parade, but also sometime policemen, firefighter and even nurses and doctors last years. That's also why we frequently invite units from allied countries, to honor them in public. It's voluntarily less martial than military parade in country like Russia or China and more festive (so...the awkward dance, like you say) to avoid ressemblance with the parades frequently shown in authoritarian regime, where the point is more agressive nationalism and showing the might of the regime.

This unit is part of what is called the "adapted military service". The aim is to get young people in the overseas territories who are in difficulty back on the right track. On top of that, you can't see it on the clip chosen here but if you look at the whole parade, you will see that there are also some whites within this unit. So no, it is not segregationist at all. This is not something that belongs in France and never has been.

Jesus, this is the most cringe march I've ever seen. Horse guards look really good but everything else just seemed a bit off and that dance at the end was easily the most cringe thing I've seen a military do.

Really the cost aren't that big for france (you forgot many country that do parade including spain) its a show of force, the americans do the same when they move around their fleets and its a cultural heritage from the french revolution, like your pov doesn't make sence when you know things
