  • This is a big help for beginners. I shouldn't say that it's "wrong" to bring your elbow out or to have your hand perpendicular to the fretboard. It's just not what you want to do in the beginning for things like C chord or F chord. As with a lot of things there are eventually times you need to break the rules.

Miss Janet I just started to learn how to play 5 day's ago. I have watched many beginner video's and you are the first one I have seen to explain this. This was exactly what I was doing. I was pushing my elbow out farther and farther trying to play a chord. After watching this video it has become much easier to reach the fret I'm trying to get to.. Thank you very much.

Michael Jeck yay! Hurray! You’re welcome! You are also lucky to find this early on. Often when we have difficulty, it’s about convincing our body to NOT do something. The Alexander Method uses a sort of mantra: “do less”. It helps reduce unnecessary tension. I’m glad you found us!

Hey Janet, Thanks for the tips and it worked for me as I was struggling with few chords. I am old guy and fingers are stiff. Just got guitar as father's day gift and first time ever touched to play some something. Thanks again.

I LIKE IT! Great tip. I have played a guitar but I lost the music bug for quite some time. Never noticed how I reached the frets. I don't even know if I do that. I will pay attention now. Thank you very much. As soon as I re-string my guitar, I'm going for it. One other thing ... what is the website you have those forms on?

      Hi Darryl!
Sorry, yes, I need to put that in an annotation...here's the website:
Good to hear about the new strings! I'm developing some fun lessons about innovative ways to play the guitar that are easier...a different kind of sound, but nice....and still a good place to get the fingers ready for more challenging things.
