4x Quonset home-studio: 40 years of artistic simple living

- In the desert of Joshua Tree, Bobby Furst's home/studio/compound is an artistic wonderland built from 4 Quonset huts, 3 Airstream trailers, and a shipping container. When Furst left LA for the desert he erected one two-story 50' by 30' Quonset hut with a lofted bedroom and industrial kitchen and bathroom.
As his first build became more of a theater/concert space, First bought another kit and erected a second, third and fourth unit. Using just a friend or two and the help of a Genie Lift, he erected the building's arch by arch with just the simple bolt technology.

Everything about this was great! I only wish it was 3 hours long.
Incredible! This man seems like he would have been the best Industrial Arts teacher at a high school. The teacher everyone loved! I bet he knows so much. He said he's a carpenter by trade but I can tell he prb has over 100 different skill sets. So awesome! Def one of my fave episodes!
Awesome! Haven't heard "Industrial Arts" term in decades!
Dream home/studio.
so elegant in simplicity. I want.
How does he power everything 🤔thank you for sharing this gem.
9.4 KW of solar panels...
I love what this gentleman has created. I felt sad though by not hearing more of the Vietnam vets poem...those Veterans didn't ask to go there..
no overgrowth of weeds problem, I love dry climates.
Pretty cool
Nice!
Hoarding 101 but cool hoarding lol....
This is awesome
thanks for transporting me to another world, if only for a brief visit.
You ever watch her Tiny Texas Houses video? It's a trip...
Yes her full videos are great. Have watched the Tiny House one a few times.

I lived across the valley, could see Bobby's place from mine, until I sold in August 2020. I've attended functions there through the years. He has a lot of energy and imagination.
And money money money
How is the situation with water supply and internet there?
@@postedback dry, very dry! Most normal people wouldn't try it.
Cool setup. Used to drive past here (Joshua Tree) from Coachella Valley to get my haircut newr 29 Palms. Interesting area.
@@postedback , joshua tree is a wealthy people getaway retreat. it is in a busy area, I mean, it is not on the middle of nowhere. and it sits over a oasis, the whole yucca and coachella valley are oasis, and if I am not mistaken close to palm spring there are the biggest natural non-dam oasis in the world. so they get water from the underground rivers. the internet is very good because those 2 valleys are highly populated, especially the coachella one (with over 250k dwellers) and it is just 3 hours away from LA.
I just bought a property with a giant Quonset Hut on it and I want to turn it into an Adventurers'' Clubhouse... this guy is the ultimate inspiration!
GO FOR IT !
Where? And do u need help? -crazy enough to do this with all the skills I got
@@gein2287 Death Valley!!!! So when he was talking about not having insulation, I don't think that's going to fly for me 😁
👍
Make a video.
Everything so eclectic but also very tidy and neat! I love this old wood contrasting with metal structure of building!
Love seeing how people take control of their lives and living how they wish
Nothing better than freedom to do your own thing
It takes Money
@@webstercat I KEEP THINKING THE SAME THING AND I BET THAT HE IS LIVING BENEATH HIS MEANS.
He’s proven it can be done! Maybe it’s your turn?
@@eddiearrington8086 YES! I AGREE IT IS MY TURN .
I would love to just go live on his property and learn all of the things. What an amazing mind
Love this place, love this guy.
Your HANDS are GOLD,your Brain is perfectly firing on all 8 cylinders....Sir,,you ARE a mechanical architectural, carpentry, plumbing builder designer of EPIC PROPORTIONS. I absolutely LOVE what you've done......and would love to chat with you for like a month,,just to scratch the surface of ideas that are floating around in your head....GREAT JOB. INCREDIBLE,,, I'm really at a loss for words at the entire complex and the TIME YOU'VE INVESTED,,,not to mention what it must've cost to have concrete brought out to the desert......Thank You for sharing🥰
I never considered a quonset. Saving this idea for later!
Hi Dave...he has the right idea.Yes his site is worth saving and reviewing often..
..
It's genius. Definitely the way forward is often found in the past
Furst, you've done an amazing job in creating your place! SO AWESOME! Mahalo nui loa, Kirsten & crew!
Bobby is a true kind human being. Had the pleasure of spending 3 days/nights at his place with mutual friends. He had locals come and do a concert in his “theatre”. He’s just a true sincere humble soul. Many props to you Bobby!!
Does he still help people build these? I mean not for free obviously lol. My grandma wants to know.
wow, this gentleman is so amazing. He built his dream world.
Love this place, love this guy!
Gotta love this man's creativity and imagination!
I can see all the work involved in these buildings and it's incredible what this man has done.
I really enjoyed seeing his creative mid-century modern elements.
I wonder, does he have a "mid- century" source of water?
Whole new level of “home theater”! Very cool. I loved the made scientist/crafter vibe!
The made what?
Mad scientist
By far one of the more interesting and innovative structures / houses ever on the videos of your channel.
Just brilliant. Enjoyed every minute.
What a different life. Get away from crazy people in the big city and enjoy not being in bondage. More and more people are trying to do it. Love it when a plan comes together
The amount of things he has is overshadowed by the intense level of organization of said things.
This gentleman is extremely clever, extremely interesting...and our current society is marginalizing him and others like him.
I'm jealous...It must be so nice and peaceful escaping the crazy world we live in nowadays....He's a genius with so much talent.
This man knows how to live. Beautiful at every angle. Love it
But , does he know how to survive , in that desert when LA drains the river dry hydrating those lawns for the stars ?
I absolutely LOVE this place and this man. He made his dreams come true. I lived out that way as a kid (early to mid 40s) in a railroad box car. My dad talked of living in a Quonset Hut and having a small farm. Wish we had. Rust is a living material. So beautiful. I want to live another life, and do something like this. Wow. Thank you for bringing this magic to us. The ART in WALMART... lol. Lemons into lemonade. Imagine the stage shows and concerts he's had there. Love it.
THAT was fascinating! So much to see... And, what a cool dude! Man oh man, this coulda been a 2-hour tour, even. Really enjoyed that!
Would have liked to find out about heating and cooling these large spaces.
I'm wondering if he just toughs it out on the really hot days or is there some method that he uses to stay comfortable.
I have been sitting here wondering the same thing.
Love the idea of these buildings, but I also live in the california desert (bordering Yuma AZ, and Mexico), and it gets extremely hot.
Would really love to know how they would be insulated???
@dwdogs11 Dripping sweat and stuck to the sheets...ugh.
Lol this man built a tiny city and u don't think he would install some cooling apparatus set up? Thats silly. If u look at the main living building it has the roof vents that are applied when using a cooling system. 😎 😉
@@babylove-69 OK, maybe, too bad he didn't show it. I've never been in a metal building where some roof vents alone couldn't make things comfortable. I've worked in buildings like that and all you could do is put a fan on yourself, drink water and suffer through it.
That must be a swamp cooler he uses in that Travel-All trailer/bedroom that passes code.
This is amazing! Such clever recycling and fun antiquing.
Words cannot express the emotions that the tour of this exceptionally creative artist’s studio and home has evoked in me. Thank you sir for sharing your talent through this video.
He has lots of concerts at his place you can find him online. Furstworld
Epitome of utilisation of recycled materials in terms of creativity and art..👌👌⚡
That place is epic! This guy knows his stuff!👍 His place rocks!🤘
Has a serious lack of knowledge about sips..
Water Wells? Septic tanks? Electrical hookups or solar power?
Creative use of professional stainless steel cabinets for his kitchen. Bedroom is enormous! Thanks for sharing this interesting home, etc
Water?
Can't be hourding no water now! Now you know that all is reserved for the pools and lawns of Hollywood persons! Get your mind right mister
Build it and it will come " Happiness"

❤it! 💯 🎯
I have always loved these steele Quonset Huts...As an artist this is so wonderful!!! LOTS OF SPACE TO CREATE and have performances!!!! YeaH!!!
New episode! Yeah! It's almost midnight in Scotland ... But.... I will watch
That place is a million times better than Los Angeles!
It's literally a desert, why would you want to live there
@@gl4989 I lived in Los Angeles. It's very nice except it's literally a desert full of way way way to many people and way to expensive, full of homeless under every single overpass. And ridiculous traffic every time of day. And night.
@@gl4989 "A quest for affordable space"...hello...?
@@EEVENEEVEN-vb5qy LA isn't a desert it's just hot
@@no_peace well all the water comes from someplace else, and alot of the trees and bushes. And it's even worse than a desert because it's all concrete.
I love every square foot. I'm an artist. I could live in one of these for sure
Until the inside temps hit 125*
This was a real journey into a unique environ designed by a creative genius. I like how you bring out so much from those you interview in such a natural way. Thanks for another great documentary!
Another amazing video Kirsten D! Bobby is an amazing artist 🎨! I've been lucky to have worked with him on a couple projects over the years. Truly he is an amazing person and an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others! ❤ I've been to many events at his place over the years and it can be like stepping back in time where "people art and music are all one" because of one man, Bobby. Thank you Bobby! You rock! Scott
Thanks for the tour ! I've been there a number of times . It has grown immensely in the past years . Always a great experience !
Bobby has created some amazing art , not only at Furst world , but in the local community .
I love this video. I, too, like rusty metal, but I don't have his creative ability. Love the entire compound. How does he keep buildings cool?
*Amazing guy!* Fabulous place.
Rust is beautiful and never sleeps
We are thrilled to have creative customers like Bobby Furst that show the amazing ways you can use Quonset huts!
Fascinating! I could spend days looking at all his things. Thank you🤗🐝❤️
Wow!! I serendipitously ended up at a concert here years ago, met Bobby, who took the time during the party to show my friend and I around a bit. I'm also a carpenter, and I remember admiring how sturdy that loft looked! Bobby was a great guy, very kind a humble, with great vision. I've tried so many times to explain how cool this place was to many of my friends. Now, I can show them this video! Thank you Kristen!
Love this guy and his developments. So many treasures.
Just got to love this guy . Now this is the American dream. My brother in the Joshua Tree area in the mid 70s and into the early 80s . Then left for the Central Coast . Tho his kids stayed in Johnson Valley. This place is Amazing. Today is 28 September 2021
Fond memories of my time in the SW come to mind as I watch this fascinating life story.
WOW and WOW....truly love the eclectic/artistic style! I wish I was as brave!👏👏👏👏
Another one for the Quonset aficionados. I see them everywhere now.
I love this place and could happily live there
He has the coolest stuff! Recycling at its best! When you put all this storied stuff together it gives the place such an inviting personality.
All cool, but NONE of this is some
“Poor Mans” build. Have him
Say how much all this shit costs!!
Oddly, the desert seems to attract the most interesting people?
As artist myself I love your reportages on artist's homes and studios, unconventional and so inspiring creativity. what a free mind and spirit this artist!
Omg I just pissed my panties 👏
Freaking amazing!! A true artist. Love this.
This was most enjoyable to watch.
Nice! How does the homeowner keep the dust out of his tidy homes? In my area, dust is a problem.
wow! great interview. I have been to Bobby's place a few times and am always so amazed. One thing I can never figure out is that all his STUFF is dust-free! I tease him about it. I want to know his secret. Great guy, great artist and I am honored to know him.
This guy is a subcategory unto himself. If we had more like him this planet we have now wouldn't suck so much. If the aliens were smart they'd try to duplicate hiim.
He certainly created a very cool place to live. The patina on that rusted metal was really nice

There's some sweet homes built from new metal grain-silo's as well. (On YT)
Wow. One of my favorites of your videos yet. I'm into industrial/wacky design and decor myself. His place is great. Tbanks.
Quirky, imaginative, durable and recycled. Quite a guy and thanks for finding him. I do wonder about electricity generation plumbing and the like.
Luv the Quon-pound, I've been dreaming of such a thing for quite some time. Those metal buildings have to be ovens in the summer and refrigerators in the winter though.
Yah??? No insulation. That would even help keep it cooler. And heat rises. Can’t imagie the upstairs. I had a barn 36 x52 with a full upstairs and big door on gable. And windows on the other gable. Believe me! It’s hot up there! It’s pretty remarkable. Just wonder where he gets all the recyclable things. Am sure they aren’t free. Very interesting though! Beautifully open. I will say that! Water where’s water come from 🤔🤔
All I can imagine is how torturously hot those buildings must be in that location.
He probably has an herb for that.. Sips are the way to go..
It's actually not as hot there as you might think. Plus the nights are just cool and beautiful.
Low humidity, that could be up by Death Valley, China Lake, somewhere in San Bernadino County, beats San Joaquin valley
Great video!! I also live in Joshua Tree and have a similar building for my artstudio. Mine is incredibly hot 🔥 🥵 in the sunner- it's just like a giant toaster oven even with both end doors all the way open. In the wintertime it's kinda like getting out of the pool, you freeze but when you get back inside it's warmer.
Awesome, like how I would envision a retired post apocalyptic super scavenger/trader would live, king of the wasteland.
What a delightful fellow, and his compound is amazing!
That was a wonderful, albeit too short. Would Love to see you video a longer, two part interview with Bobby Furst. He's Fascinating. Thank you Kirsten.
Don't you just hate it when it's to short? Longer is better , better luck next time Missy 💔 you little heart breaker
Wow. This setup is totally awesome. It's over the top. I'm sending this video to my son. He's planning on buying land to build on. These would be so cool as homes. My late brother-in-law dreamed of making a quanset hut into a home. My sister thought he was way of the norm. He had a vision in his head. Good to see how this man did it!!!!!
I am beyond impressed. Thank you for such an amazing video and I'm super inspired by your idea of recycling and bringing such a simple building into a very GRAND space.
I went to school in quasit huts on Okinawa in the late 60's.
I slept in temporary barracks for a few months in Okinawa that were old qhuts
@@hippiehillape our schools had kerosene heaters, very smelly, and you only got warm if you were next to it. Our school was way up the island. We lived in Naha.
I had opportunity to travel to Okinawa when my daughter was stationed there. What a wonderful experience. Went to the Orion drum festival it was spectacular.
@@d.w.3325 when I was about 13 we would go exaploring in hte caves. There were amazing grave sites. It was an enchanted place for a service brat.
Super interesting man Kirsten. And to build all of those structures with just one or two people? Wow. I know he mentioned having film screenings in the one structure, but I'm not clear on whether this is business? And why such a big compound? What does he do there exactly? Last, I thought the letter he read from Vietnam soldier was quite special.
I see he recycled the tequila bottles 👀🤣🤣🤣
Wow......... this man is a blimmin' genius!!!!!! Talk about recycle everything!
wait...why wouldn't this be a 'Hotbox'? OK. that having been asked, Wow! What an artist! Love it!
Impressive what one man can do, would love to live in one of those houses 😊
What a hard worker .it’s always wonderful to see a person creating and living his dream .
That is one Creative dude!
I love it. Remodel, rehab, deconstruct, reimagine, recycle, upcycle, reuse.....the whole gamut. Such a place to fuel the imagination.
I do wonder how it must feel to live there in the evenings.....middle of the desert (seemingly) and all.....how is it illuminated (not how, so much, but how much of it)?
This place is a Airstream and Pat Metheny "American Garage" wonderland.
👍👍
Yet another amazing Kirsten video, thank you 😊
This space is AWESOME I wish I could live here and work for this guy, for rent.
