I watched the Silent Platoon last night. The two flubs that I saw just goes to prove that they are, after all, humans.
1. A Marine knocked his cover off.
2. A Marine dropped his rifle.
I commend those Marines for their professionalism even when something doesn't go quite right.
Yes I also felt bad for them because I can’t imagine how hard this drill really is and how many times they’ve had to do it, I was happy to see the platoon leader pickup that marines cover and put it back on for him 👌🏻👌🏻
THese kinds of mistakes are more likely when you have mild hypoxia from wearing the unnecessary masks

I watch the whole drill last year, because I have a Mother in my extended family. That has a Marine son. I'm not happy that she didn't remind me to watch it this year. I will certainly reprimand her asap. Semper Fi all. 👍👍😊

This is something to see in person. The last time I saw the evening parade I was attending the Staff Non-Commisoned Officers Academy in Quantico, VA in the summer of 1985. We took a trip to DC to HQMC and finished the evening at 8th & I for the parade. Semper Fi!

Probably heresy to state this, however, I was not a US Marine so I will anyway.
After watching this demonstration with the masks on, I believe the Marines should all grow beards - cut short and neat and squared away of course. Why do I believe this? The Pirate Factor.
As if the sight of a couple of dozen US Marines charging at you with fixed bayonets isn't scary enough, that same bunch of Marines with black pirate beards would be absolutely terrifying.
Tactical beard is real. Just ask the Canadian Army.
Been watching a lot of the 2020 silent drill team videos...I have seen more mistakes in 2020 than any other year.

I don't know if it's part of the drill or not, but one Marine still have his rifle on his shoulder(I don't know the correct term for it) throughout the whole drill.

AlexSDU that happens if a rifle breaks during the process of drilling, the marine will go to the rifle carry and march the rest of the sequence that way.

It's a drill, a real drill. Paying attention to detail is what the military
"drills" into you and the Marines do that better than any other branch, so they show it off on the 4th of July. They inspect equipment and rifles all the time so no one gets hurt and everyone is ready to fight, and most of all, look cool, this is a fancy drill at doing that. This is a pride thing, these guys were pick out of thousands to do this. The best of the best.

My father, though not on the Silent Drill platoon, was assigned to 8th & I about 30 years ago and he taught our MCJROTC this style of exhibition drill when I was going through high school. I would say, that while the elaborate rifle movements, spins, and throws are a key aspect of the Silent Drill Platoon, the high standard of discipline and precision are its most important traits, to which all members of this platoon maintained during the exhibition. That said, speaking from my limited experience at drill meets and other events through High School and University ROTC, I know the Marine that knocked his cover off and especially the one that dropped the rifle during the side-spin-toss were likely kicking themselves after the ceremony.
As to the impact of the face masks, while I can't speak to how it affected their breathing, I could still see it being a very annoying distraction in an environment where attention to detail is critical. However, I am glad to see that they are taking the current situation seriously and using protective equipment even in ceremonial events such as this.

What was the command from 1:04-1:10 ish I saw like a third of the Marines at a different position?!? Can someone elaborate, I was in the Marines but never saw a command where only some of the platoon did something and others didn't.

You can smell the leadership potential by those whose noses you can see.
They cheated for when the officers marched in front of the troops to get to their position - there was a cutout for the officers to stop on . For us in Australia 🇦🇺 we are taught to count the steps and if we are slightly out that is fixed with a Right Dress - officers and troops do this .

It makes sense for them to have their positions pre-marked since they do this every night every night during the Summer, so why not have their positions pre-marked, makes things easier.
The Marines wearing Masks make them look more fierce.
I see some of the Marine's don't have their safety equipment fully in place, would it be throwing off their coordination and timing ? Impressive show of drilling.

The Marines are great, even with some flops they still kept going and that discipline and professionalism makes me wonder if those flops wasn't orchestrated. Also they look more of badass with masks on.

Couple things that caught my attention - given the US Marine's reputation on being...festidious, about their uniforms, i wonder what was up with some having noses uncovered. A few with mouths uncovered i can imagine needed for clarity of orders.
The marine that lost his cover and the second his rifle - i almost hope that was deliberate, cause i dont wanna imagine the shit theyd catch off field for that.
Cannot help but admire the pure discipline and order on display here.
Accident/mistakes do happen whether you like it or not.
