Frans was just the complete package : tall, strong, pretty quick for his size, great passing and vision, very good defender and obviously HUGE kicking. When you have that much tools in your bag you don't need to have fancy footwork, he was just doing the right play depending on how the defender position himself
The reason they can't hold on to him or seem to predict his movements is the strength in his legs and the state of his fast twitch muscle fibres, he can exert a massive amount of force and blast through gaps for that milisecond it takes to confuse the opponent and if he hits you it's like hitting a brickwall due to the force coming through from the short blasts where he digs in. He also has a great read of the game so he just runs lines that makes it difficult to hold on, you can't hit him headon cause he can "shift", he's not lightfooted sidestepping in the general sense like a Kolbe but more pushing so much force through his legs that he shifts from side to side, so if he hits you you gets destroyed.
What I like about Francois Steyn is that he truly loves playing rugby. He doesn't care about how important a game is, or his many accolades, he is just there to play rugby. At 6ft3 and about 115kg he is another fine example of a South African farmer boy 🤣🤣🤣
He is the best rugby player I have seen, played every back line position for the Boks (except 9). Try name someone that has the skills this man has. Lets not forget the 60+m drop goal.
Steyn was the starting inside centre for the Springboks in the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final, he made a fantastic break that resulted in a penalty for the Boks and also converted one himself later on in the game. He is therefore the youngest player to win a Rugby World Cup. In 2019, Steyn was again called up as part of the South African team to play in the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and became one of the few players to have won two World Cups, the second only for South Africa. He is known for his long distance kicking ability and strong tackling.
Back in the mid 70s my club (in the USA) had the great fortune to be gifted an 18yo Aussie lad that could regularly drop kick from midfield. We took advantage of our luck. We had a strong defense so we used his foot to push them inside their 22. Then we would hold them there waiting for the ill advised kick. Boom 3 points. Do that a couple times and you create scoreboard pressure making the same mistake more likely. It did wonders for our game.
Francois Steyn fundamental underlying talent is timing - this applies to both his kicking and his breakthrough runs. He does precisely the right movement at the exact correct time.
He won his first world cup at 20 in 2007 dit it again at 32 in 2019 one of two south Africans to have won the world cup twise os du randt (mobile mountain) did it in 1995 and 2007
Rob, Steyn is a very big player, at 6 ft 3 and 18stone he is a physical presence to be reckoned with. These clips don't tell you just how quick he is, his physical size belies his speed and isn't caught in these clips. As for not having a sidestep, big men don't sidestep, they swerve. Defenders are unable to tackle him because unless they can get a tackle full on directly in front of him, any side swipe will be beaten by his speed and physique. By the way, he is a physically bigger player than most!
Frans Steyn not as consistent dude he's more successful then O'driscoll he won the tri nations, won the world cup twice, beat the lions and beat NZ in NZ 3 times in a season, has O'driscoll won a world cup which is more important

Grey college boy
He's a big boy, I think most defenders are too busy bracing for impact so they don't see the step coming.
Frans Steyn, basically the size of Jonah Lomu. He doesn't need to sidestep, like lomu he just run over them.

He is not the only SA Rugby player to win two World Cups. Os du Randt is a 1995 and 2007 World cup champion.

was a blessing to the SPRINGBOKS

He's got 2 World Cup wins (2007 and 2019) and a Lions Tour win (2009). Hopefully he gets another Lions Tour win (he's in the SA squad)

The reason why you can't work it out is because he is magic. The best player I have ever seen. Lukanyo Am is another inigma.
Hes South africas O'driscoll just not as consistent
