Fast forward to my interview today: Everything is going well during the interview and the boss said my resumé was very inpressive. He then turns to me and says, “I typically hire a lot of younger people at this company because customers respond better to them. Can you please tell me how old you are?” I was shocked. I was heaitant, but said, “I just turned 31….but people confuse me for someone in my twenties quite often,” to which he replied with a simple, “ah, i see.” We finish exchanging pleasantries, and he asked if i had any questions. I asked him when i could start, to which he replied, “i’ll let you know in 24 hours, because i still have other applicants to interview.” His entire attitude seemed to flip upside down and he lost all optimism. Fair question Jannick. There are a handful of reasons. Maybe they are desperate, didn’t pay enough attention to your qualifications or they have another strong candidate but want a comparison point.
@@BenTalksTalent That's cool. I'll look forward to watching it. Sadly, there are employees that ghost rejected candidates. Sometimes, they break promises like they're gonna get back at them for a particular timeline but failed to do so. Indeed, if they don't respond within the timeline they gave, then don't hope that you'll get hired until you reapply.
I've experienced a lot of the signs listed in this video. If I would have known these signs earlier, it would have saved me so much time during and after the interview. Thank you for your this informative video! ❤️
One sign from your video that stood out as a reflect back to a recent interview is no timeline or commitment. I found it strange that the interviewer told me "And don't even ask when I am going to make a decision. You are the second person I interviewed." That was before she told me "Since you were already referred to this position by an internal employee, I won't even talk to you about the job because I'm sure they've told you about it." The interview literally lasted fifteen minutes, then she asked me if I had any questions before ending the interview. I thought, "That's it, so quickly??" Now I know! I will no longer drag fifteen minutes interviews to last thirty minutes. It is only painstaking for the interviewer and a waste of my time as well. They've already made their decision and there is no changing their mind. Thanks, Ben!
I had an interview that went well, I even had a tour but i have not heard from them and I just saw they posted the job position again 😪 So I’ll get over it now.
I appreciate your videos, I interviewed today, it went well until I was asked if O had questions for them, I hesitated and asked what is the next step. I honk I bombed it there. My little brain can't get past that one question
here’s my scenario: During my interview it went really well, and I was told I was one of their top candidates. I was told next steps would be within 24/48 hours, i sent a thank you note, and they responded the same day and sent my references an email. This was last thursday. my references all responded Friday morning, and i never heard anything back. I reached out late monday afternoon, no response. they responded today (tuesday around 3PM) letting me know they are still “in the hiring process and reviewing candidates”. What are your thoughts?
Brilliant video as always Ben!..would you mind if I ask you a question?...you know on most rejection letters you are told "please do not hesitate to consider applying for other roles with us in the future"?...do companies genuinely mean that or is it just a generic phrase used to almost "pacify" the disappointed jobseeker?
I’d say it’s a bit in the middle. It’s certainly generic but also companies to want to encourage relevant candidates to apply again. But more generic in most cases unfortunately.
In my interview they asked me why do you want to join the company? I answered that I have a good technical background and past experience aligns perfectly with the job role and I can be an asset for the company. While asked for feedback they answered "I liked that answer and even we are looking for someone who can be an asset". Is this a positive indication? I interviewed 3.5 weeks ago, haven't heard back yet.

Ben, I recently had two interviews that went extremely well (laughing, being complimented, informed of timeline and also that there was one other interview they were conducting). I noticed in the beginning you said if they say your under or over qualified for the position, you didn’t get it. So during my most recent interview with one of the directors, he hesitantly said “I’m a little concerned, we’ll actually I’m not sure if it’s a concern, but I feel that with all of your accomplishments and experience that you may be overqualified for this position”, which I then responded, “while I appreciate that you look at my background in such a high regard, I see that this position would still allow me plenty of opportunity to learn and grow within the company”. Should that be treated the same as being told directly that you’re just overqualified for a position? Both interviews went very well and the hiring manager even briefed the director I met with on how much he liked me. I’m sure I’m overthinking, but your advice would help. Thanks.
It’s hard to tell if it’s the same without all of the context but you responded great. That’s an ideal way to respond to that concern! Really well done Hailee! Let me know what happens!
I know this is a little old so I’m not sure if you’d respond, but I love your videos. Just interviewed for my dream job last Tuesday, she said she would contact me on Friday of last week and heard nothing. She did say they were looking for people like me and the interview lasted longer than she originally said it would (it was a phone interview so I’m not sure if that changes things). She also mentioned that there were more interviews that she was setting up since they were looking at filling multiple roles of the same job because the company was getting really busy. A question I have is what are your thoughts on sending a following email after the “deadline” and what are your thoughts on sending an email if you have been ghosted? I see mixed videos on emailing once a week for 2-3 weeks and then sending an email about understanding you weren’t selected and you appreciated the time they took to interview you and hope all works out with the candidate that was hired?

He did not even introduce himself to me, we all walked to a room, she turned the seat to look only at him and her back to me, i was at one end of the table he at the other end. He asked me one question about my experience at customer service, as I was in the middle of providing my answer it was like 30 seconds and I did not even finish the sentence, when abruptly he called off the interview. I was so shocked I sat there for just 1 minute and he looked at me, and i said to him, you know did not even finish answering your question, he replied that he could tell when he came in that i was not a good fit, How did you tell you did look at me and came in 32 minutes late (at that point i did not care i knew i wasnt getting the job), he said can you please leave were done. I asked him not to walk out with me i want to leave without saying anything to you just like you did not say nothing to me when you got in. And i walked out.

Also towards the end, he did mention that he had few interviews this week and he has 3 more next week and he will let me know the outcome. I am not sure what to think about it. Does that sounds like a good sign?
Hi Ben, i had an interview more than a week ago. I think it ended well. I sent them a thank u letter after that interview which they replied immediately asking me to submit few requirement and how they are very keen to proceed to next step. Few days after, they sent an email that they are pending “final approval” on their offer and will get back on me in 1-2 days. I followed up on the third day, and the response was “we are still pending final approval from bosses”. I know it has only been less than 2 weeks since the last interview, but is there a light that I really am waiting for an offer? Or could it be just them buying time searching for other candidate? Thanks!
Hi RanRan, it could honestly be a lot of things. Sometimes the process and approval just takes a long time. Sometimes its looking for another candidate. Sometimes the organization puts a pause on hiring temporarily. Hopefully you get the job and it’s just taking a long time. The stuff you shared sounds positive.

What if you send a Thank You email to the hiring manager (and cc the recruiter) and the recruiter gets back to you in 30 mins said they will be in touch soon with the next steps?
I just got a job interview this morning and it seems went pretty well. The employer smiled at me after answering his questions and then after that he said the salary if I'm okay with that. After that he said that they will be sending me a link on the gmail. But he didn't said that I'm hired or I got the job. (He has Jamaican accent which I find kinda hard to understand when he talk). Just asking if you guys think I got the job or no? I'm still waiting for the email though.
I just had a group interview yesterday And they have reached out to my employer for reference check yesterday. I did go ask a question regarding a check that we need before starting the job if they are going to send it through the recruiter said yes get this check completed depending if your successful or not we’re send it through dose that mean I didn’t get it? Thanks
Actually when the recruiter asked me at the end of the interview if i have any questions i told him to give a tour around this place the recruiter smiled and told me that he love to but the NDA thing wont let him. Is it still a bad sign?
@@BenTalksTalent the recruiter asked me about my current job and if i find i hard time through this job and he got amazed when i told him that i work 13 hours a day with multitasking too and asked me if i was able to do the job 100% in each task and i told him yes easily. It is a good sign?

I followed up on the third day, and the response was “we are still pending final approval from bosses”. I know it has only been less than 2 weeks since the last interview, but is there a light that I really am waiting for an offer? Or could it be just them buying time searching for other candidate? Thanks!
Hi RanRan, it could honestly be a lot of things. Sometimes the process and approval just takes a long time. Sometimes its looking for another candidate. Sometimes the organization puts a pause on hiring temporarily. Hopefully you get the job and it’s just taking a long time. The stuff you shared sounds positive.
I had the abrupt end after like two minutes once, was darn disheartening :/
That’s so rude. I’m sorry Simone
What if they say “I have 2 other girls to interview but I’ll call you tomorrow” is that a bad sign
Not necessarily. Them giving you a timeframe instead of just saying I have a lot of other candidates I need to speak to is good.
@@BenTalksTalent thank you!!
@@BenTalksTalent just had an interview yesterday at my dream job and that’s what the hiring manager told me so I had to make sure it wasn’t bad!!
@@KaylaEllison totally! I hope you get the offer!
There's no such thing as "A Dream Job"! The employer will never see you as "The Dream Employee!" Take this very wise advice from a successful, professional, corporate world employee with 20+ years of experience and 2 degrees, currently a Network and Software Engineer!
What if you send a Thank You email to the hiring manager (and cc the recruiter) and the recruiter gets back to you in 30 mins said they will be in touch soon with the next steps?
That sounds really promising. At least you should know either way quickly!
I got a message from the recruiter that I am so quiet I knew something was wrong but I was overqualified for the role.
Being overqualified is tough to come back from.
Well it all sounds good besides not getting the email. Hard to tell Joshua. I hope you get it.
@@BenTalksTalent I still didn't received any email its already a week now.
I just had a group interview yesterday
And they have reached out to my employer for reference check yesterday.
I did go ask a question regarding a check that we need before starting the job if they are going to send it through the recruiter said yes get this check completed depending if your successful or not we’re send it through dose that mean I didn’t get it?
Thanks
I think you have to wait until they get the reference done to know. But I’d say that it doesn’t sound decided yet! Thanks for the comment Lynette!
HAR TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE A INTERVIEW IN THE NEXT WEEK. WHAT IS MEAN OF THAT . I AM SLECETD OR REJECTED.
Actually when the recruiter asked me at the end of the interview if i have any questions i told him to give a tour around this place the recruiter smiled and told me that he love to but the NDA thing wont let him. Is it still a bad sign?
Not necessarily. How did the rest of the interview go in your opinion?
@@BenTalksTalent the recruiter asked me about my current job and if i find i hard time through this job and he got amazed when i told him that i work 13 hours a day with multitasking too and asked me if i was able to do the job 100% in each task and i told him yes easily. It is a good sign?
@@obamasburgeristhegreatest I think it does sound ok but it’s hard to tell.
@@BenTalksTalent i got the job
