Hmm, tasty and accurate lesson. Thanks Arry... Are those a couple of Gretch FilterTron pickups sitting in that Tele?
It reminds me of when I was a kid back in the 70s, I bought a beautiful '64 Telecaster with the nice translucent creamy finish over the ash body to gig with a Rolling Stones based cover band. Being a Gibson guy,, I hated the sound of the single coils, and decided to route out the neck pickup and install a Gibson Humbucking pickup. If actually worked and sounded great!
I eventually traded it for an ES÷335 Gibson/Epiphone clone made in the 60s. I often wonder where those great guitars ended up, and kick myself in the ass for letting all the vintage gear from the 50s to the 70s slip out of my hands... I ended up with a sweet 60s
Les Paul Custom in Wine Red i play through a Hiwatt Lead 30, and had Gibson make me a J÷45 Rosewood Custom (that's signed by Ren Ferguson);that i play throughput a small acoustic amp
It's fair to say that under Ren Ferguson, Gibson Montana was producing some of the most well=crafted acoustic guitars in Gibson's history....There's a few good videos on RUclips about Ren worth looking at... I'm very fortunate to be able to play and hold one of these beautiful and powerful sounding pieces of art,.

You picked up ever subtle nuance that makes this song just swagger, oozing raw blues from every note. And the tone from Keef's guitar on the intro is damn near the best "tone" around. Filthy, dirty, raw. Awesome job. Thank you

This is absolutely the best tutorial to play this song on the internet, which is arguably one of the coolest rock riff intros of all time. ( I say arguably, but it's an argument you would probably lose if you disputed it with anyone of any credibility.) But what is even better... Andy is trying to hide the fact that he is having the absolute time of his life playing a near perfect rendition of Keith's earthy, basic, open G rocker. And OK, if you caught the real Stones on one of their "looser" performances, you would likely concede that Andy actually did a better job. If not in creativity, at least in execution of the piece. In any case, Andy's poorly disguised enthusiasm for the techniques needed for the song should inspire you to play his video over and over again until you can make it sound not too bad. Even if you never get up the guts to play it for someone else, it will soothe and satisfy your internal rocker. In an overly PC world fighting about details of cultural expropriation, this is an African, jazz, rock, blues, European, American, British fusion piece, played on an American version of an ES (Solid body, Electric Spanish) guitar (honey Tele with dual Humbuckers?) and taught with poorly restrained but infectious enthusiasm by a Latin speaker. Stop the conflict, just play it, enjoy it, and celebrate the diversity in humanity that can make us enjoy the commonalities in our enjoyment in life, music and rock, and take a break from the political differences.
And thanks to Keith for maintaining the necessary level of sobriety to capture his "fun" riffs as part of the unchallenged entries into the musical lexicon of the cultural and musical rock revolution of the 1970's.

Salve Arrigo... 9 years since you posted and you're still helping people! Grazie mille! I'm trying to learn the tune and your link popped up in my feed. I love your style of teaching... the slowed down sections you're playing really help, the accuracy of the strumming and notes played and then the different delivery of each concept. Keeping that looseness of delivery, talking about a specific section in different ways helps massively.

This is probably the first challenging Rolling Stones tune they've heard played correctly with the proper tuning the proper feel and the correct licks including the feels which are often played way more economically the people sing using a judicious amount of open strings when available, so that the fills get a deep jingly cool bluesy Groove that seamlessly slow is in and out. These kinds of shows are all over Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. anybody who gave this a thumbs down, probably plays the song incorrectly either using the wrong tuning or thought that merely playing the song in open G lunch they could Slack in learn only the intro riff in and a few inaccurate variations, most likely from a guy that is not good that they think is a guitar God. the other possibility is it they learned it from some online tablature or a book with a transcriber who totally fucked up trying to teach it in standard tuning because Mick Taylor is playing the backup rhythm in standard tuning, so many music nerds who transcribe some "boring, simplistic rock n' roll tunes" that anyone admitted to Juliard or Berklee assumes they would tear up, until they learn that the classical guitar posture. Positioning with adherence to thumb behind the. Neck, arms out in a ballroom dancer frame etc., and playing a thin neck Telecaster through several Fender high-powered twins with celestions is going to be something that is equivalent to a different instrument for . although Keith might not be a particularly technical guitar player with consistent quality playing every time he gets on stage, he has got to be one of the best cool guitar parts that both inspire the best Stones Tunes, and form the structure of one of the coolest riff-based Blues Rhythm styles ever recorded. This is the quintessential aura or, better articulated culmination of Keith's guitar songwriting and playing. the Mick Taylor years had all of the members of the band firing on all Pistons in the primes of their career as one of the top rock and roll bands of all time. It is arguable that they are in fact the best rock and roll band of all time, in terms of vibe and chemistry not to mention their huge catalog of awesome tunes. yes, it is obviously clear, that bans such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd,Yes, Allman Bros., The Who, the Jimi Hendrix experience,, Etc certainly had Superior musicianship across-the-board. despite that measurable metric of Excellence oh, the most important thing that one appreciates about great bands is he enduring chemistry enabling them to write honest and meaningful songs that move people on an emotional level where you feel like they are playing for you and that you know them. The stones had those qualities in addition to the Swagger and confidence That Just oozed cool.
this guy managed to capture that coolness but his accurate rendition of the greatest Groove that the Rolling Stones ever recorded. by the time I figured out how to play the song correctly using open G tuning and learning all of Keith killer fill Riffs , it is actually annoying to watch players that are pretty good play this tune and try to fake it. There are plenty of tunes out there that have a flexible General structure that plenty of competent can you use to make their own musical statement. Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin, and the Band of Gypsys, I put a handful of examples of both bands and famous tracks by those bands most musician she probably stay away from because they are perfect and there's no room for someone else's shity interpretation of them so if you're going to play them play them right and this guy playing is doing it right

Fender Tweed amp, vintage American Telecaster (52-57 if you got the money) or the same pickups on a newer telecaster - it's all natural break up.
From a teen till now, the only tone I've based all my purchases around was Keith Richards' tone. If you want specifics, he recorded a lot of the records prior to 1972 (Exile on Main St.) on a 1959 Les Paul + Fender 57 Twin Handwired (Tweed - no reverb). You can still buy the amps from Fender's custom shop but you'll need a sound proof room to get it break up the same way Keith does.

I've heard a lot of good guitarists butcher this beyond comprehension. You did a nice job. The way you do it is, I think, the correct way - it's pretty much how I play it and I've spent more hours getting the little nuances down than I care to admit. The only gripe I have with the vid is spending time explaining what open G tuning is. Yes, it's easy enough to skip through, but IMO if you don't know what open G tuning is, you shouldn't be here. You're not ready to play this song. Thanks for the video!

Appreciate the video, great job of a deadly Stones classic!! Keefer removed his 6th string on Micawber tunes to open G rather that having it in D and accidentally hitting a sour note which is so much easier to play. Rick Parfait of Status Quo brought his 6th string Up To G which puts a bit more tension on the neck but then you have both 6th and 5th stings ringing open G which I now use exclusively.

You have enabled me to play one of my favorite songs from Sticky Fingers. I can’t thank you enough. Please keep posting lessons. I appreciate your not only describing the position but the note as well. I like knowing it is a “c” note in addition to the string and Fret. I wish everyone did that.

Keith was explaining this tuning in his book "Life", not being a guitar player, I'm trying to follow what he's saying. Love this song, very nice job, sounds great!

I believe RUclips has a number of people that just troll through videos thumbing down. I'm not saying just cuz I like a video everyone else has to as well. But I'm talking Ive seen videos of child prodigy's like 6-7 year olds playing amazing complicated pieces and a thousand people hit thumbs down. If ya ask me somethings just wrong there lol, I pay no attention to it...

    Arry, thankyou!
Ive been jumping up and down ALL OVER the neck tryna play this song in standard tuning ever since i first heard the record..
An authentic presentation in standard tuning is possible but its a LOT of work lol
i guess ive gotta keep a guitar in "keef" tuning
    Nice thorough lesson!

fantastic breakdown! I wish you would have shown how to play the Santana esq jam at the end. This is probably the only Stones song where the studio version is better than the live version. I'm always disappointed when I hear it live because the silence in between the chords is what makes you stop, listen and start head bobbing. this song lives and dies by the timing........well done

That part is standard tuning, Mick Taylor. There's a RUclips of him sitting in at British gig not too long ago, he comes out to play it. Again it's the tone, a Les Paul thru a boosted Fender or Boogie, it's pretty straightforward, then that descending riff turnaround 4 times then out.
The more difficult part is this which i play in standard sometimes, can be done, but doesn't sound that spot on, open tuned to G i think.
I have some Airline guitars that get it perfect, as well as p90 on Les Paul which sound a lot like these.
Does Keith play without bottom E on this?

I'm with you @bretschwartz - would love to know how that segue is played between the first part of the song when it transitions to the space jam.
