- A lesson on Open G Tuning and how to play Little Red Rooster along with a couple of other open G riffs and licks.
Open G Tuning is pretty cool and something to play around with, especially with a slide if you're playing blues.

Thanks Griff,
There are many good instructors out there but you are one of the most gifted, always explaining your lessons clearly and to just the right level.
Good lesson, but if you are already familiar with open G start at 5:22
Josh M My Hero
Thanks
thank you Josh!
Awesome lesson, love the no stress attitude and the way you make it simple, you're a real confidence booster.I appreciate it.Thankyou
Finally tuned a guitar to open g and grabbed a slide. This lesson really gives me a great group of informaton to work on. Thanks for sharing!
Hey, Griff! Thanks for the tips. Good to see you again. it's only been about 15 years or so.
Really great lesson man, thanks so much for making it easy to understand unlike al ot of people on youtube. Love Little Red Rooster.
Always enjoy your vids, Mr. Griff. Good info in here.
Tuning instructions are ALWAYS helpful to me. 43 years playing amateur. All data is helpful. Chill, dude.
Lame.
Good job here. I have been playing 40 years and learned something new here.
Rick Olson you are kidding arent you? I feel bad because ive been playing since 65 and I cant play like John Mayer. There were whole years I didnt play. But rooster? You just werent exposed to it. You would have learned it before. Good video, but with 40 yrs it should be childs play. Im lazy.Thats my excuse. Lotta that going around i think.
Hey Griff! I was just wondering what you were up to. I got your Blues Guitar Unleashed years ago. I still dig it out once in a while. Great stuff! Good to see you!
Very good guide to slide guitar in G
Thanks
James
Ok... Take a breath here
And get ready to dive into slide...(and two of my fav tunes).. Thanks man
Damn, Griff. This may be your most useful lesson to me of all time.
Thanks Griff - really enjoyed the lesson - your a great teacher
I bought an acoustic guitar with a classical (Spanish) neck, I never realized that little bit difference in size, and my big fat fingers can make chords. I discovered open tunings (DGDGBD and GBDGBD are my faves) and my wife thinks I have been getting lessons. Now, with your lesson, 1 of my favorite blues tunes are in my repertoire. After 54 years of life, I am finally becoming a guitar player. Wish this stuff was more openly available when I was a frustrated teen, instead of the crap that was available.
I've been playing in open D for several years.
Yep bought a Fender Squier. Either play one string at a time. Do the slide turning seems to be the best option.
It is a lot lighter than a Les Paul. Even that Les Paul is a bit snug between strings. Especially when the tips of my fingers have been smashed over the years. I did a lot of labor to pay the bills with my friend Manuel Lai Bore.
I've been using DGDGBD ...but I'll have to try GBDGBD. Thanks for that 😎👍!!!
If you like Dylan DGDGBD on "Buckets of rain buckets of Tears... I've got all these buckets coming out of my ears" from 1975 album ... "Blood on the tracks" is a fun song to do.
I occasionally play a 4 string cigar box with the middle of a string pack tuned GDGB (1513, or Open G). Of course the action on this rig is a bit high really lending itself to slide and simple 1 or 2 note fretted stuff. This song is great on this setup, especially playing with your fingers which also serve to mute unwanted strings. Strumming power is from the back of your fingernails (kind of claw hammer style), but if you need even more volume, use your amp. For this song you could play it even simpler on a 3 string setup (151 G power chord). Thanks Griff!
Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Ive always loved that tele griff.
This is a great lesson for those of us who love the slide sound of Delta Blues. Also a great introduction to those who may be intimidated by that enigmatic tube of glass around your finger and the rattling sounds it produces from a novice. Hang in there people, its a new world and a new sound if you haven't tried it and a whole lot of fun to do.
Instablaster.
Kind of late for comment but you forgot to mention laying one of your fingers behind the slide on the strings to dampen rattles and odd vibrations. It also helps give better control over the slide, at least I think it does. Anyway, I like all your blues lessons. Thanks!
Great lesson man, thanks!
Wow I love this Griff! Thank you!!
Another great lesson. Thank you!
I started doing LRR in standard tuning on a Strat' (with slide and singing). A fellow band member suggested I use my Takamine in 'Open G'. It was a revelation and so many little guitar phrases just popped-out with a simple pick - now I'm a convert.....
Opened my ears,mercy from France
Very Cool lesson!! 😎 Thanks.
Awesome lesson 👍 Thanks a lot✌🏽🎸🎶✨🕺
You are my new favorite RUclips guitar teacher. Thanks for breaking down some open tuning. (sorry, I can't contribute)
Thanks Griff!!. I have a Slide waiting me :)
Cool vid, cool song, gorgeous Telecaster...subscribed! Thanks for posting! ✌🏻😎👍🏻☘️☘️🎶🎶🎶
Great lesson, cheers
That is so cool I love it 😉🎸
I'm playing in Open D# these days and you can play any melody in that tuning. Key's no longer matter in an even-tempered world. D# to keep more tension on the strings than pure open D. D is a singable range for most people.
You give good explanations.
open d sharp?
@@lamper2 Typo :( When I went to some heavier strings I started tuning to open C# but all the patterns are the same.
WOW !!! I love to cheat like this. I'm 73 and my fingers don't work so good anymore! THANK YOU !!!!
My little finger is bent and has a mind of it's own
Great lesson - thanks.
Great lesson!
Very cool, thanks!!
Awesome, thanks for sharing
Hey Dude! you made my day! Greetings from Guatemala City!! come up some time Body!!!

Ya all right Rick?
What mm height off the fret board would be good action for wanting to play some slide on strat guitar but not to high? Maybe 2 MM high? And that's if your using 9[s for strings? Thank you as i watch you all the time on here and facebook and learn so much.
thanks for this cool lesson ! i want to try out "little red rooster" by rolling stones in open G tuning and play some cool slide guitar and play some cool lead guitar licks in the original key of G major ! lol :)
Skip to 3:00 if you already know how to tune to open G.
Nice video thanks
Good one!
Lots of great general tips, even for people who aren't interested in that song. Great lesson!
Do you think a fretless electric guitar, set up for slide in Open G, would work, or be too limiting, without the ability to fret some notes?
Interesting question ! :)
Grover makes a product called the "Perfect Nut" that goes over your existing nut and raises the action quite a bit. It's made to convert a guitar into a lap steel style, but a lot of people use it the traditional way. Something to look into anyway :)
As per your original question though, you can still "fret" on a fretless, but you have to practice for perfect intonation (like a violin, etc). In the end it's all about the sound though, so you may be on to something :D
backwoodsbrewer Thanks for the reply! My idea is to mount a tele bridge in the trem cavity of a strat body, resulting in a scale not quite as long as a baritone. The frets wouldn't be placed correctly then, so I thought I'd use one with worn out frets and just make it fretless.
It would be better to use a neck with markings in the right places so you knew where to put the slide! Lowell George used a strat with a tele pickup in the bridge position. You could use an SD "Twang Banger" in the bridge position.
@@backwoodsbrewer
Grover puts too much tension on neck & top on high price guitar. Get a 2nd cheap if yo like me ..poor. I gots a family ta feed can't buy lots of guitars. Got Epiphone AJ 200S great sound but too low action to slide & not gonna fuck it up with " Grover but" A cheap guitar can make good slide sound w/ optional pick up sounds funky old school.
Excellent

Great Lesson I Especially Love the Stones version on the Love you Live record there’s some great interplay between Keith,n,Ronnie on that one check it out 👍🏻🌞⭐️❤️🙏
Thanks buddy
thank you Bro
Thanks for that. Not a fan of G.T. , always thought he was sloppy. But hey, he makes money. I don't. Thanks for the vid.
The reason to go low and then back up to pitch is to take the backlash out of the machine heads.
Griff, My apologies for the previous comment. It was meant as a joke but didn't come out that way. I do like your lessons, and I purchased the "Blues Guitar Unleashed" lessons. I also forward your emails to my guitar playing friends.
No sweat... I wasn't feeling well and was a little "testy" that day. I can normally take a joke just fine :)
@@bluesguitarunleashed Thanks Griff. That means a lot to me. You and Marty are my favourite instructors, and I promote you to my students as well.
Hi Griff
I had a very bad table saw accident a month ago and really blasted my left hand. Almost lost a finger. Mangled the rest.
I'm picking up slide now while I wait for my fi gers to heal. Hopefully I will have full motion again.
Little Red is right up my alley right now.
Cheers
Thought this was John Oliver giving a guitar lesson lol. Great vid
Same Glasses , eh?
It's also the same for 3 string cigar box guitar.
Taking off the Low E (now D) gives us a bass G string. This works better as a root string in open G. This is kind of what Keith Richard did.
Love not to have to retune my guitar all the time , thanks . Great slide lesson .
Have you ever studied Rick Parfitt's open G work?
Always tune up
You go low and then tune up - that makes sense.
You look like luke wilson:) nice video thanks
'Don't be afraid to play, just play the hell out of it.' Elvis Presley
You can also tune the low E up to G :)
Or keep another guitar(maybe one lying in the corner, rarely used), just for open G and dispense with the low E entirely. Like Keith. Sounds better. I think.
I suggest that you change the E6 string to something lighter if you are going to tune it to G.
@@jansimmelman267 Maybe use another string the same thickness as the 5th?
What guitar tuning does Foghat's lead guitar player use?
open E
SO didn’t he tune to open “A” vs open “G” tuning on the recording? That is what it sounds like to me on the recording I’m listening to at least?
Show!!! 🇧🇷🤘🎸
Will you do a video of the song "Rosie O'Donnell is such a fat hate-pig"? I think its a blues from the late 1930"s by Horis "Cant Lie" Horrison.
Do you have tusq saddles?
What slide are you using?
Starts at 5:22
A full play thru first helps imensley...so we know what it supposed to sound like put together
What do you like for an amp?
I blues and metal WHAT I LIKE B
IG
I GOT . MY fast slide at 17 Lock up slides lost them alot
fuck i learned a lot here......
Keith removes the top string, only plays with 5 in open G
Yes, but this was played by Brian Jones 😉
starts on the turnaround.. to the four chord.
Didn’t I see you down in San Antone on that hot and dusty night?
I do think you are talking about open E...
Memo From Turner is played by Ry Cooder in open E tuning winterlandboy.
You were eating eggs at Sammy's when the black man there drew his knife...
My G tuning is GBDGBD, there are a few open G tuning possibilities
My first two teachers were Howlin' Wolf and Eric Clapton jamming this. I was ready to give up. No talent at all. I played a classical guitar and heard them on the radio. When I found their key it was like they gave me permission to play. I walked all over them and it was like they laughed and said "just PLAY!"
First song i ever learned how to play. I had been playing like a month haha. I got it from Rolling Stones 12x5 i think. Maybe Stones now. Its very simple.
sometimes i tune my low E string to double the A string below it in open G and it sounds good
I didn't know Luke Wilson and Dana Carvy had a baby and he gives guitar lessons! Uncanny, party on wayne!
open G tuning? drop the top string aaaltogethe "Jiiim, mu'fugher" Jimmy Reed
Duane Allman 😎
Man us old school cats call that a turn a round !!!
You look like a banker on his week off bet you got an odools somewhere but thanks for the riff man.
Ya' gotta' damp with the index finger too...or it sounds like anybody just picked up the Guitar and plays 1-4-5 non- stop...
when I watch videos of Son House, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf playing slide I don't see them dampening the strings with their slide hand. Its all in the picking hand. You have much more control there.
@@Bluestomiv you damp with both hands, behind the slide on one hand and with fingers or your palm on the other hand.
Yeah, damping is crucial to good slide technique.
It's OK, but I never understand, why tutors here, are not able to play the whole song first......and then went to the details....for beginners it's hard to follow.............
Uh, what lesson? Good job I already knew this one.
I used to love messing around with slide on my acoustic. However, i found that it wrecked my strings very quickly. They went dull and lifeless and quiet, after a few sessions. Maybe it was me, leaning too hard or something, because i havent seen anyone else say this.
Way too much time tuning and gab. But thank you for explanation and video. Good job.
How many old farts went 'TSsshhh' at the beat ? LOL
Hey poppa settle down . Play nice .
