After playing 5 string banjo after all these years I just use open g on guitar play what I love on banjo such as Cripple Creek, Cumberland Gap, Oh Susanna, Skip to my Lou, Ida Red and many others. I playing without picks on my fingers because it has a nice more mellow tone and sound. I l know a lot of old banjo tunes on guitar in open g. I'm just gonna stick with that.
Thanks this video really helped yours truly Ed Ljungdahl.
Great video!! I’m from Brazil and just watched this video. English is not my language, bit i could understand you perfectly. You don't speak fast, so it helps a lot.
The first time I “heard” about Open G was last year, reading the Keith Richards' biography, where he tells about it! That was amazing to learn! I have never heard about before. So i tuned my guitar and came to learn how to play some of the Rolling Stones songs. It was incredible to see how was different and easy. Now i'm here to learn more about it and learn other songs.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 👏🏻

Joe, you've got me. This has really helped me get over into another space as an older guitar player. Everything you said makes sense to me. Thanks so much. Subscribed!!!
Been thinking of open G tuning for a while now. You've convinced me to tune in. Thanks for the lesson. Nice and clear.
Great! Thank you VERY much. I am a songwriter from Uruguay and also a guitar teacher, so This gave me a lot of ideas to work with my students.
You’re killing me
Your a great teacher and I am looking forward to seeing your videos every chance I can get
I am 66 years old and I have been trying to learn how to tune my guitar
For my beginner guitar I've got a Epiphone I think they have a great sound but I'm still learning how to play
Thanks for sharing your videos with us all
Thanks David, glad you are enjoying the lessons. Epiphone are great guitars. Good luck with your learning
The audio for your vocals and guitar sounds really good. Thanks for the ideas !

Thanks Chris
Joe... Ive been playing guitar for 40 years just to entertain myself. Im not bad but always enjoy learning new stuff. Just ran across you today and really like the way you put the hay down where the aheep can eat! Good job! I look forward to checking out more of your videos. Your style is soothing and encouraging. Been playing for 40 yrs and always over thought how to play in open G, you opened a new world for me. Thank you!
Thanks for posting Becca 🙏
I play blues with open g. Also some gospel and rock. I just make it up. I don’t know how to describe it. I’m musically illiterate. But I do have soul.
First time viewer from America. You have a great teaching skill. Easy to understand and I’m gonna try some of these ideas.
Thanks Fred 👍
It's a lot of fun and a whole new learning experience using open chord tunings. If memory serves me correctly, my first song using Open G was "Little Red Rooster".
Great teacher.
great stuff joe i love it that helped me a lot joe thanks
A great tutorial Joe, many thanks.

thank you so much .. I tuned to open G earlier this week and then came across your video. Totally inspired me to continue to practice my finger picking acoustic and electric for the Stones classics. Just subscribed .. really appreciate you sharing sir.
Well done , you are good teacher and the tunes are very kind to the beginner . Thank you for taking the time to share .
My pleasure!
Thx much. Great teaching approach.
good teaching. Open G tuning. I want to inderstand the chords up and down the fret board and play slide.
Love your lessons and your style of teaching…please send some more open tunings and slide blues songs this is great and exactly what I want to learn with blues playing 🎸🎶

It's my 1st time watching your channel and this video. Im fairly new to guitar playing but I'm loving it and have calouses 😊😊. I'm going to love the versatility of styles (using a slide, etc) while in open G tuning.
When you were barring the fret, I was a bit confused. I couldn't see if you also were playng/ holding down other string. If it was just barring; yay... super cool and easy. Thank you!!
Fantastic lesson thank you

Nice job. Open tunings expand the vocabulary of the musician. Led Zeppelin III took me forever to learn, but it was worth the instructional value into open tunings.
Outstanding lesson I just happened to stumble upon while bouncing around Open G tuning pages. I've been looking at some slide guitar, this snippet really caught my eye. I did register at your Patreon page. Let's go !! 🙂
Thanks for your support Sammie, that really helps 👍
Great stuff!
Thanks for an excellent introduction lesson to Open G. I found it very interesting and helpful…. I’m definitely going to be experimenting with Open G & D now…
Very good. I've played guitar 60 of my 70 years and only played open tuning less then half a dozen times. Even then it was only experimental and went right back to standard tuning quickly.
Really helpful mate thanks!
Thank you Joe. There is no shortage of online guitar tutors plying their trade, but I really enjoyed your relaxed and encouraging style of instruction. Have a 🎉🎉🎉

Excellent lesson joe keep it going
Thanks Liam 🙏
I'm a bass player but like banging on the guitar as well, I heard about the open chords a while back but it didn't spark my interest, until now. I can't believe all the enjoyment I was loosing out on, I will get right on that, Thanks.👏
Good lesson, thanks!
Mate that was great. You have a new subscriber cant wait to learn more slide stuff
Welcome aboard!
Well now that is refreshing. I have been playing in open E and D but there is a subtle nuance in the open G that I really like. Thank you Sir for a new thing to try. Living in Nashville it is always good to have a different sound. Cheers. Gerry.
Thanks Gerry, I'm hoping to come to Nashville later this year
The Keith Richards tuning!
Who?
I believe it was Gram Parsons who showed Keef
Keith said it was one of the Everly brothers.
Blues guys in the 20s and 30s, who Keith loved, played in open g a lot
The Myles Kennedy tuning
Brilliant. Thanks.

Hey Joe, great job on this video! I'm sure you could spend hours going through and teaching all the songs you know in open g tuning..keep up the great work, it's appreciated!
Hey thanks Ken
"Hey Joe" lol... nice!
Thanks Joe, I've learned so much from your videos, you're a natural teacher. Will be practising on the open G tunings. If I'm playing with others can they stay in normal G C etc?
Good show man.
Thanks!
Thank you so much
Excellent video 👏

Great Video
Great stuff Joe. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you very much. I just got a new guitar today. Finally found a chambered godin .
Enjoyed this…I have a short index, severely bent middle finger due to arthritis and so I play in Open G. I find this tuning great and manage to play in care centres 60s/70s stuff and sing…i think you can adapt most things to this tuning. Ely chord website is a great chord finder tool I use.
Loved your video
Thanks for posting John 🙏

I like you 👍
The strumming at 8 min, is the beginning of Squeeze Box by the Who..... I had no idea it could be played in Open G. Thanks
Hey Joe, another Great video, especially for the Open G tuning. I’m looking forward to learning the song you pointed out however, I couldn’t find Romeo and Juliet. Thank you sir, Mark

Super
Thank you, that lesson was so good! I just ordered a 12 string and am anxious to attempt G tuning with it... I'm guessing it should sound pretty nice!
Once you get that guitar in your hand track down the “Armadillo” album by the great Leo Kottke. There are a number of things in his catalogue that are performed on 12- string in open G that are actually very easy but wonderful fun to play. “Watermelon,” “Machine Gun,” “Up Tempo,” “Easter in the Sargasso Sea,” etc.
@@danielschaeffer1294 Thank you Daniel. Yes, I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Leo in person when he performed at the State Theater in Easton, PA. He was truly amazing! Thanks for the tips on his Open G tunes I will certainly give them a look.

Thanks! 🙏😅 Was almost at the point of trading away my soul at the crossroads...
Great video, thanks Joe !

6 months ago this was a foreign language to me. Things are making sense to me on guitar now. Some people don't learn the fretboard before they learn to play. I recommend drawing a fretboard on a good sized piece of paper that you can see while your practicing. you'll find every note on the board pretty quickly. use a power chord shape on say like all of the E notes up and down the neck. not all of them will sound good together mix it up and try rephrasing. once you can move around the E's, try the D'S. As you advance more, change to more of a bar chord shape, try different root notes(chords}. go from major to minor by lifting your 2 finger on and off the g string (3rd string in standard E tuning). Learn chord shapes also you can move them all around the fretboard. they sound awesome too! Good luck !😀
Great lesson Joe! Thank-you. Anyone know what kind of guitar he's playing?
Hey Fred it's a 00028EC by Martin
Romeo and Juliet is great
Your voice is very soothing. You would do good for voice-over work too.
Thank you
Daddad tuning is fun also
I learned open G tuning through being a big black crowes fan,Even open E tuning which they use,
What a great lesson!!!
Thanks Marcelo I appreciate your feedback

Check this out. . 😊 I've been playing guitar 35 years. Mind you I started playing WAY before RUclips existed. And I've only known about "open G" since I stumbled on a "how to play like Keith Richards" video a couple months ago. It blew me away and I've been kicking myself for not having already known about this.. anyway, I've been tooling around with this wonderful tuning and was at home noodling around on my SG and decided to grab my strat that I had tuned to open G and started playing... And my wife actually walked in the room because she thought I had someone else in there playing guitar. 😲 She said she'd never heard me playing anything like that and thought it was someone else playing a guitar. 🤣
😏 And I've just realized how old I've gotten.😕
