🌺 The only clothes I wore in middle school (mid-00s) were M81 trousers and hawaiian shirts. I liked the juxtaposition of muted earth colors with bright floral patterns. There's even a photo of me at my friend's graduation where he's wearing a suit and I'm wearing this ridiculous combo. I thought it made me very unique lol.
With regards to track suits, I think the connection to the collapse of Yugoslavia bears more discussion. In many ways this was the west's first real exposure to that type of gopnik culture as well as its association with military endeavours (NATO intervention). Various militia members wearing assorted civilian clothing like track suits mixed with JNA and imported western uniforms very much now invokes certain images and associations.

Synthwave and Vaporwave were styles from fictional universes. The real world never really looked like that. Most of the world during the early to mid '80's still looked like the mid-late '70's because no bothered to update anything until the late '80's and even then the '90's were arriving, so we associate the pinks and teals more with the early '90's rather than the '80's.

IanPat is hilarious. My first encounter was in a general XCom 2 Camo mod, where it was hidden among real patterns, so I was quite gobsmacked when I saw it. And someone who thinks up something like IanPat will definetely not say no when a clothing company asks him if they can put it on a garment for real.
This was an absolute trip, touching on everything from political movements to musical genres and the mad lad actually managed to present it all well and (tmk) correctly and provide clear context for it all. The content is always excellent but that you managed to keep the quality top notch with such an esoteric field of coverage is seriously impressive. 10/10.

When I was an officer in the US Army in the mid 1980’s, officers who had been stationed in Korea had the white shirts they wore with their dress blues tailored so the collars, cuffs and the placket down the front were white but the rest of the shirt was a Hawaiian print. As long as you had your jacket on no one knew you were wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

i was just thinking about, specifically the day before yesterday, going down the rabbithole to try and find the headwaters of vapor wave. because so much of 80"s media has this familiar pastiche of common styles. i didn't live in the 80's but my parents stayed stuck in them for a bit after they were gone (probably because, compared to the 80's, the 90s looks like malaise, no more coke and lasers now it's about heroin and flannel) and i remember so much more media and music that incorporates the same aesthetic. "new wave" and "post punk" lending it all an ethereal specious quality. i'm glad you did the work for me and sated my curiosity.
There were genuine East German NVA sport uniforms which included tracksuits, coming in two versions for officers and other ranks. Replicas of the officers model are available as reproductions too.

There has been a little corner of the paintball world ( MCB ) that embraced Hawaiian themed clothing and camo a long time ago - namely the hibiscus patterns, sometimes in subdued colors, sometimes bright. There was some consternation there when the boog stuff started to take off, because it felt like a fun and irreverent bit of joking that that already irreverent bunch of paintball folks had embraced was being damaged by it. Plenty of custom clothing and gear had been already in use for some time by those anarchic and anachronistic paintballers. Thanks for another great video!

I often wear old Russian “kavkaz” camouflage pants a lot, very comfortable and it’s a quite uncommon camouflage in my country. Have had many compliments wearing it!
so having meet one former soviet spetsnaz who operated in Afghanistan the sneakers weren't so my for quite but they were more comfortable and caused less feet issues as compared to military boots in the up and down mountain terrain soviet boots were designed for flat ground and nominally to keep your feet warm they was also "lore" or rumor that if you steeped on a landmine with combat boots you lost your leg usually just above the knee if you steeped on that same mine in sneakers you only lost the ankle and had a below the knee amputation so stepping on your own mines it was better to not be wearing boots
